Experience Forres! The outlook from the viewpoint at Califer Hill is stunning, giving you a perspective over the Forres area quite different to the more intimate standpoint of the streets and closes of the historic market town of Forres. This is a landscape of hills and forests to the south and the clean waters of the Moray Firth to the north, with the estuary of the River Findhorn between. Threading its way from west to east is the modern road, the A96 connecting Inverness and Elgin, and beyond to Aberdeen. Land, sea and river combine to give Forres a climate milder and warmer than you might expect; a natural environment of calming beauty and rich farmland producing high quality food and drink.

A Place of History Forres itself nestles against Cluny Hill, site of an ancient hill fort and probably a place of power and importance in early times. Kings and princes fought and died here, as Sueno’s Stone – the tallest Pictish carved monument in Scotland - stands testimony. This is the Forres of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and the real Macbeth may well have stood atop Cluny Hill and pondered the future. In time, a royal burgh was founded at Forres and a fresh street plan was laid out, dominated by a new castle. The castle is long gone, its stonework re-used in later building and the centre of Forres is now a conservation area, with Victorian and later buildings set on the medieval street plan. There is a visitor information service in the Falconer Museum, right in the heart of the town close-by the Tolbooth.

Blooming Marvellous Many visitors to Forres are struck by the quality and abundance of the floral displays which have won many prestigious awards. Grant Park at the east end of the High Street is a perfect place for leisure and sports, with splendid walks up Cluny Hill to Nelson’s Tower, a community-run visitor attraction offering views across the coastal plain. There are footpaths here and elsewhere to help you enjoy our natural environment, including the Dava Way between Forres and Grantown to the south.

Out and About Forres area offers plenty of scope for exploration. Everything from thrilling wildlife watching on the Moray Firth to leisurely walking in Culbin Forest on the other side of the bay; and from high quality shopping to peaceful contemplation in the grounds of the 12th century Kinloss Abbey. The sense of wellbeing can be a tangible thing – no wonder the world-famous Findhorn Foundation eco-village sits so comfortably here.

Momentous Events In addition to the regular programme of events and celebrations throughout Forres area, this year will see three major new events. In June, Piping Hot Forres will fill Grant Park with pipers and spectators attending the European Pipe Band Championships. In late July the Orienteering 6day championship will set up its event HQ and official campsite in the grounds of Brodie Castle ready to welcome competitors from all over the world. Then in September, Findhorn Bay Arts presents Culture Day, a celebration of culture in all its forms ...welcome to Forres! Things to see and do

Things to see and do

Forres is abundantly blessed with things to do, indoors and out, for all ages. Along with sailing, kayaking, and mountaineering, there are also more leisurely pastimes such as fishing on the River Findhorn or at Lochindorb, walking or running in the many woodlands in the town and the surrounding area, or along the beach, where it is not unusual to spot seals basking in the sun and even the occasional dolphin! There are two swmming pools available, one in the town and one at Kinloss as well as cricket, horse riding, rugby and football and for the more adventurous, you can even take a flying lesson over the stunning Moray countryside. Alternatively, you can sit and watch the world go by in the beautiful Grant Park.

BEACHES Burghead Beach Burghead Beach marks the eastern end of Burghead Bay. It is a quiet beach popular with watersport enthusiasts and you will occasionally see windsurfers and kitesurfers. Initially stony, the beach then becomes sandy. The tide drifts a long way out making it ideal for kite buggying.

Culbin Sands A wild and beautiful beach, it is reached through the Culbin Forest from the main car park at Wellhill. It’s a two mile walk to the coast and the route can be confusing so make sure you pick up one of the free maps provided by the Forestry Commission. The beach and its adjoining sandbar stretch west for some 10 miles from near Nairn to the mouth of the River Findhorn.

Cummingston Beach Cummingston is a small village between Burghead and Hopeman. The beach is not well known and is not

signposted from the road but there's a short stretch of sand surrounded by beautiful rock formations and caves. The cliffs are popular with rock climbers practising their art.

East and West Beach, Lossiemouth East Beach can be accessed by the old wooden bridge, which crosses the River Lossie. With a long stretch of golden sand and dunes to protect from the weather, it is one of the most popular beaches in Moray and the waves are ideal for surfing and kitesurfing all year round. West Beach is tucked behind Moray Golf Club and leads onto a long esplanade for parking. An excellent sandy beach leads to Covesea Lighthouse. There are interesting rock pools to explore on the near side. Overhead, you are likely to see jet planes on their approach to the RAF Lossiemouth runway.

Hopeman Beaches East Beach is the main beach in Hopeman and has lots of rock pools to explore as well as a wide area of sand. It's the only place in Moray with beach huts, most of which are brightly coloured and a real gem for photographers. West beach in Hopeman is a short sandy hidden stretch beside the caravan site. Most visitors will drive past it but park near the harbour and walk past the boat repair area towards the caravan site to find 250m of lovely sand.

The loch is stocked with rainbow trout and it is possible to spend the day fly-fishing from a rowing boat. Fishing permits are available from the park warden.

Only one wall remains but great views from Castle Hills. Built to protect the vital trade routes to Elgin the site of Rothes Castle is recognised as one of the most ancient strongholds in Moray. It is estimated that the castle was four storeys high and was protected by a portcullis and drawbridge.

Seatown, Lossiemouth Seatown is a collection of small cottages huddled together beside the River Lossie. It sits beside the Spynie Canal, which was built in the early 1800s to a design by Thomas Telford. Nearby is the old market cross.

Spynie Palace For five centuries until 1686, Spynie Palace was the residence of the bishops of Moray. There are superb views. Spynie Loch can be seen from the tower. The mighty tower house was one of the largest in Scotland. 2 miles north of Elgin off the A941, IV30 5QG Tel: 01343 546358

in the British Isles. Sueno’s stone is thought to date back to the 9th or 10th century. Carved on one side is a Pictish cross whilst on the other side is a battle scene thought to commemorate the Victory of King Malcolm 2 over the Viking King Sweyn. The stone was uncovered in the middle of the 18th century and the glass casing that protects it today was added in the late 1990s. It is located at Findhorn Road, and is open all year round.

The Thomson Monument Erected in 1857 on the site, where there once stood a castle, this monument commemorates the life of James Thomson, a surgeon from Cromarty who died at the age of 31 in the Crimea. At the time, the people of Cromarty did not want the memorial erected there so it was placed in Forres instead.

On the morning of Christmas Day 1806, 21 men from Stotfield Village set to sea in three fishing boats taking advantage of calm weather. The weather turned and the sea took all 21. A beautifully made granite boat commemorates the lives of these men and the others who have been lost at sea. Set on the west beach esplanade, it overlooks the natural harbour and on a fine day you can see Northerly tip of Scotland.

The Tolbooth Stotfield Disaster Memorial, Lossiemouth

Thunderton House, Elgin

A govermmental building of some sort has stood on this site since records began but the building you see now was completed in 1849 and was home to Forres Town Council until 1976. Now, the Community council of the Royal Burgh of Forres hold their monthly meetings in the courtroom of The Tolbooth.

Ben Aigan lies to the east of Rothes, the north east of Craigellachie and to the east of the River Spey which flows along the foot of its western and northern slopes. Rising to a height of 471m (1546 feet) and extensively forested apart from the summit cone, the top of Ben Aigan provides magnificent views over Speyside, south to Ben Rinnes, and away to the north over the Moray Firth to the hills of Sutherland.

Ben Avon Ben Avon is the most easterly mountain of the main Cairngorm range. It occupies a vast area to the north-east of Glen Quoich stretching towards Inchrory and the River Gairn, and it is

recognisable from many viewpoints across Moray by the granite tors on the skyline of its long flat plateau.

Ben Rinnes Ben Rinnes is the highest freestanding mountain in Moray at 2733ft (841 metres), and is classified as a 'Corbett' - a summit lying between 2500ft and 2999ft.

Carn Daimh from Tomnavoulin Cairn Daimh (Hill of the Stags) at 1866ft (570m) is most often ascended in the course of following the Tomintoul Spur of the Speyside Way, between Glenlivet and Tomintoul.

The Convals Hill The Convals (Meikle Conval, 571m and Little Conval, 552m) are the two 'rounded humps' separated from Ben Rinnes by the 'Beatshach', the pass linking Speyside to Glen Rinnes.

Corryhabbie Hill/Cooks Cairn from Glenlivet Corryhabbie is the highest point of the long moorland ridge between Glen Rinnes and the heads of Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. From the plateau-like summit there are extensive views over vast rolling hills and moors to the Cairngorms to the south and Ben Rinnes to the north.

Corryhabbie Hill, Glen Rinnes A fairly easy ascent leading to the moorland summit of Corryhabbie Hill with extensive views over Glenlivet, Ben Rinnes and Speyside. Moorland and farm tracks complete the circuit.
