The Editor

Getting married is one of the highlights of our short life on this earth. I wonder how many millions of tons of confetti have been spread around churches and other buildings over the centuries. I’m sure there will be mixed views over the environmental impact but, hey ho, it all seems like good fun to me. Hope you enjoy our short feature on weddings this month!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS

February, in our northern climate and location, tends to be our lowest month for mood and physical well being. Some people suffer horribly from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and thankfully, now the doctors can get ahead of that with some early interventions from October onwards. The Bible assured the people of a hot middle eastern land that “ the sun shall not strike you by day... nor the moon by night”. However we are grateful for whatever little sunshine and even moonlight can brighten up our lives. So, the appearance of longer days and an early sunrise is most welcome. Even a little snow can help brighten up the landscape at this time.

Since ancient times and certainly in the Bible, the symbol of light shining through the darkness of people’s lives has been a regular feature. Light makes things clear and transparent.

Often, we say that the truth casts light on an uncertain situation. For Christians, the most pure form of TRUTH is not a list of facts, nor is a mythical philosopher’s stone. For Christians, the Truth is a person: Jesus Christ, the source reference for all truth. Jesus indeed underlined that when He said, “I am the truth.”

policy making, the Good News that we share in our Churches is like a blessed holiday from it all. Forget about retail therapy! Overconsumption is one of the main causes of our current financial gloom. Far better to turn your eyes towards the light of TRUTH, the light of Jesus Christ, that we share in Church. That will brighten up your life.

In a darkening world that increasingly evades ethical practice or enlightened

Donald Prentice, Parish Minister Dallas, Rafford and St Leonard’s, Forres.

At a time when we have difficulty trusting the international system of money, the banks and even our own elected politicians, issues of truth telling and transparency become most called for. I personally would rather hear bad news about large mistakes in government policy than have it hidden in dark cupboards in a way that nobody can make the necessary adjustments with the situation just going from bad to worse.

Feeling Fat? Need to tone up? A Vibrational Plate is a machine that gives the body's muscles a low-impact, high-speed workout by using vibrations to stimulate them to contract and relax. They generally contract once or twice a second, but just by standing on it, the vibrations cause an automatic reflex muscle contraction of 30-50 a second. Just 10 minutes on the Vibrational Plate will have the same results as 60 minutes of conventional strenuous training. U Improves fitness levels U Burns fat & tones UĂŠ Â“ÂŤĂ€ÂœĂ›iĂƒĂŠL>Â?>˜Vi & coordination UĂŠ Â“ÂŤĂ€ÂœĂ›iĂƒĂŠvÂ?iĂ?ˆLˆÂ?ÂˆĂŒĂž & muscle strength UĂŠ ˜VĂ€i>ĂƒiĂƒĂŠLœ˜iĂŠ density This type of workout has actually been compared to doing about 3,000 leg bends, which of course would be impossible with a traditional workout. This means that not only does vibration plate training work, but it’s the best kind of workout that you can get! Many people who are excessively overweight have also said that it’s a great start to getting in shape because you don’t need to be extremely fit already to do it effectively. Training sessions are undertaken in a private room with a trainer, or alone, after your 3rd session – so no need to feel embarrassed about coming along! Initial session ÂŁ15, all following sessions ÂŁ5. For bookings or further information call:

Vegetables are fat-free and cholesterol-free

All vegetables, by definition, are cholesterolfree and for all practical purposes, fat-free. Over 95 percent of vegetables contain less than a gram of fat per serving, and even that insignificant gram is mostly unsaturated fats. Although we may hate to admit it, our mothers were right when they told us to eat our vegetables! As with fruit, vegetables require little or no preparation. All you have to do is rinse, peel or cut to your liking and munch away! Most types of veggies are delicious raw. Since they make such a great snack on the go, it’s easy to take a few carrots or celery sticks to work with you. Fresh vegetables are also delicious in a salad. If you prefer cooked vegetables, steam them lightly over a pan of water or in the microwave.

Mini £10 (1-2 people) Box £12 (2-4 people) Crate £16 (4-7 people)

Example of a standard box. The contents change regularly and vary according to season.

Make sure to cover them to trap the steam and nutrients. Be careful not to over cook them though because vegetables retain most of their flavor and nutrients only when they are cooked lightly. Avoid boiling or cooking vegetables with fat. Did you know that boiling and overcooking actually removes the good nutrients your body needs? And cooking with butter or oil can ruin the natural goodness of vegetables!

FRESH VEG TO YOUR DOOR! Fresh vegetables in-season, produce all locally grown and hand delivered to your door. Sound too good to be true? This service is now available from Scotgro, a family run business at Broombank Farm, Auldearn. Our aim is to provide our customers with the freshest seasonal fruit and vegetables straight from our farm. We offer a range of boxes to suit each customer’s needs. The ‘mini box’ for an individual or couple, the ‘standard box’ for two to four people and the ‘crate’ for a large family. Delivery of our boxes can be arranged on a weekly, fortnightly or on a one off basis through our website or by telephone. You can easily pause your box if you’re having a week away or you’re feeling ‘vegged-out’. We also offer you the option of telling us of any veg you don’t like. PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

Well, one of the big stories of recent months has obviously been the Forres Mechanics award for the best footy scotch pie. No great surprise really when it is supplied by Murdoch Brothers - already winners of a variety of top scotch pie awards.

As a bit of a film buff, I took some time out recently to see the fantastic screen adaptation of Tolkien’s epic The Hobbit. It is a book I loved to read and the filming is breathtaking in its scale.

While it may not be good for the waistline, I can certainly testify that Forres Mechanics/Murdoch Brothers pies are good for the soul. I should, of course, point out that there are other butchers and bakers in Moray who also make really excellent pies and I am on a mission to check them out as well. However, in the meantime, well done to Mechanics for keeping their loyal supporters well fed with some high quality Moray produce!

It was great to see Scottish actors in the cast as well, which is hugely encouraging for those involved in the arts. Following on from Skyfall and the scenes shot in Scotland for the Harry Potter movies, the cinema is proving to be a great shop window for our country and for our many talented folk.

Dreaming of... ...Bermuda

Bermuda is located 1,000 miles north of the Caribbean and just 2 hours flying time from the East Coast of America which makes it a perfect destination for a stop-over en-route to New York or Boston. It is just 8 hours from Gatwick and British Airways offer connections from Inverness.

Port Royal Golf Course

The island’s culture is a rich fusion of British colonial history and African heritage. Bermudans are well known for their sincere friendliness and warmth. The island is famous for its Bermuda shorts that were fashioned on the British Military uniform for hot climates in the 20th century, and the Royal Navy still have them as part of their uniform today. This is taken very seriously with rules stating that Bermuda shorts should not be worn shorter than 6 inches above the knee. Bermuda’s capital, the city of Hamilton, is packed with historic buildings, churches, shops, museums, galleries, parks and gardens. All of this set alongside a beautiful harbour. During the summer months Front Street in Hamilton City is closed to traffic one night a week for Harbour Nights. This is where the cruise ships dock and the harbour is transformed into a bustling festival of arts, crafts and food stalls, late night shopping and colourful live performances! Bermuda is an all-year-round destination. The spring, summer and autumn months are the best time of year to make the most of spotless pink beaches such as the popular Elbow Beach and the exciting diving opportunities on offer. There are over 200 species of hard coral and wreck dives are very popular too with Bermuda boasting over 400 dive sites. It is also famous for its 7 golf courses! This is more golf courses than any other small island in the world. The winter months are the perfect time of year for golfing. In 2013 the PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be played at the prestigious Port Royal Golf Course between the 16th and 18th of October.

It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

Any couple booking their 2013 Wedding with us during February 2013, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a ‘Champagne Toast’ upgrade of their chosen drinks package.

Humanist Weddings It’s not surprising that we’re the fastest growing provider of weddings in Scotland – because people who go to Humanist Ceremonies like them so much! A Humanist Wedding celebrates the people involved – the couple, their family and friends. Ask us about symbolic gestures (like wedding band warming, handfasting and candlelighting), how you can involve your family and friends in the ceremony, and choices of wording for your vows. You can be as traditional or unusual in your choices as you like. We work hard to tailor the ceremony to fit you – making it a unique, personal celebration of your love and future together. That’s why Kirsteen said to her Celebrant: ‘Thank you with all our hearts – our wedding ceremony was utterly joyous and unforgettable. It was better than we dreamt possible, and we felt you understood us and the words we wanted to say.’

Caring about... Before Renovation

...complete Lawn Renovation. A project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone… wouldn’t know where to start… best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive however whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a before and after picture taken just a few weeks apart last summer. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come). 1. Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development. 2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper. 3. Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is however open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting. 4. Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and therefore environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.
