We always like to be positive here at SpotLight. You won’t find horror stories and tales of woe within these pages. We feel that there is plenty enough of that on the TV and in the papers. So our aim here is to be supportive and encouraging to local people to get involved with local activities and to play a part in your community. By engaging with our neighbours this is how we find a real place in society, not by pulling others down.

Pastoral letter and Church Meetings I remember when Pepsi Max, in their advertising campaign, used the slogan: Live life to the Max. The adverts showed people involved in activities such as sky diving, rock climbing or bungee jumping - activities that for some might get the adrenaline pumping, but for others utter terror. What does it mean to Live life to the Max? All of us have been given the gift of life. Rene Descartes, the 17th Century French philosopher, famously said: “I think therefore I am.” His logic, I am able to think, therefore I exist is a philosophical proof of existence based on the fact that someone capable of any form of thought necessarily exists. We exist. We have blood coursing through our veins, breath fills our lungs and our minds think and reflect.
So if we have been given this gift of life what is our purpose? Or to put it another way, what ON EARTH am I here for? George Harrison, one of the Beatles, said this regarding life’s purpose: “The purpose of life is to find out who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? That’s what we need answering.” This is quite a profound statement as it considers the big questions of life. Jesus said that through trusting in Him we can know life in all its fullness. He also said: “I am the way, the truth and the life. No-one can come to the Father except through Me.” Jesus was saying that to know Him is to know life to the max. Through faith in Jesus, the questions about life’s purpose that George Harrison and all of us ask at some time are answered. The Bible says that God formed you when you

were in your mother’s womb; that God knows your name; that He loved you from before the foundation of the world; that He even knows the number of hairs on your head. You are special to God and He loves you very much. The Bible tells us that we are made in God’s image. Until we connect with our Creator we will never find the life in all its fullness that Jesus offers. Through faith in Jesus we find the way, the truth, and so we find life in all its fullness for this life and the next. This is all possible because God so loved the world that He sent his One and Only Son, Jesus, who died that we might live life to the max.

BEAR have agreed to the longstanding request for ‘no right turn’ onto Linkwood way from A96 and this has been formally passed to Moray Council Transportation Department. There will be a report coming to the Economic Development Infrastructures Committee in March to approve this. Cllr Russell will ensure a copy of the minutes is passed to R&T Committee. Parliament Blog & Tides Picture by Kurt Simon , Copyright
“ Parliament Blog ” I had occasion recently to have a muscle injury treated by a physiotherapist while working in Edinburgh. In the obligatory small talk I was asked where I lived, on saying Elgin the physio who lived in the Berwick area - informed me that he was visiting Elgin that very weekend. the weekend arrived and I had taken my older son down to Boroughbriggs to watch the Elgin City game, only to spot my physiotherapist playing on the right wing in defence for visiting Berwick rangers! After being spotted by the physio in the enclosure and Elgin giving Berwick a pretty sore 4-0 beating I am now a little
It’s Six Nations time again! Having enjoyed playing rugby in my youth it continues to be my favourite sport and, as usual, I’ve done my best to try and work around the various Six Nations games and, as usual, with varied success at keeping the two hour slots free in the diary. I think one of the reasons I like the game so much is that there is space in a rugby time for people to contribute regardless of whether they are tall, short, big or small, making it a pretty inclusive game compared to other team sports. It’s also good to see two teams who can walk off the pitch at the end and leave any rivalry behind, stay polite with the officials and after all of it get some food and a drink and a laugh together at the end. A great example for youngsters and in Moray we have some excellent rugby coaching to get the best from the sporting talent coming through our schools. With all that effort
worried about visiting the physio again for fear of retribution! Richard Lochhead MSP
going in I am very hopeful of Scotland producing better and better teams at the highest levels of competition. Angus Robertson MP

Legal – Ease Alterations Alterations to your property can significantly improve its value and desirability. However, before carrying out any changes including building a new property, making alterations, adding an extension or conservatory or carrying out demolition work at or to your property there are certain steps that you should take first to prevent complications later down the line:1.You should check the terms of your mortgage to see if your lenders permission is required to make alterations to your property. 2.You should check that there are not any provisions in your Title Deeds preventing you from altering your property or making it subject to the prior consent of another party such as a factor for a housing estate. 3.If your property is a Listed Building stringent controls apply to what, if any, alterations you can make and it can be a criminal offence carrying heavy penalties to carry out any unauthorised development. 4.You must seek confirmation from the Local Authority as to whether Planning Permission and/or Building Warrants are required for the works before commencement. The Moray Council has a useful website at http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_standard/page_1604.html and provides a service whereby you can seek a preliminary opinion as to whether Local Authority Approvals are needed. Ignoring the above can prove costly and time consuming in the long run. When your property is sold the purchasing Solicitor will expect to see correct paperwork for any alterations carried out within the past. Changes and alterations to the property will have been noted by the surveyor when carrying out his Home Report survey and valuation. Whilst retrospective consent can often be sought it will come at a price and cause delay when you would prefer to be moving forward. If you are considering selling or purchasing a property and you would like further advice and/or legal representation please call:Cherry Fairley, Solicitor & Notary Public of Fairleys Solicitors, 7 Mayne Road, Elgin IV30 1NY Tel: 01343 551126

Chef’s Confidential Swiss Onion Tart Before buying the Knockomie in 1987, Gavin spent time living in Zurich in Switzerland as part of his training and this tart is typical of a Spring dish served in the mountains for lunch or supper. By omitting the bacon it is a great vegetarian dish too! Pastry 250g Plain Flour 1 egg 125g Soft Butter approximately 4 dessert spoons cold water
Pre heat the oven to 220ÂşC
Filling 50g Butter 600g thinly sliced onions 150g smoked back bacon 4 eggs 300ml Double cream 1 tablespoon Olive Oil 100g Gruyere Cheese Grated Salt and Pepper
Method 1. Place the flour in a large clean bowl or onto a clean work surface, make a well and place the egg and soft butter in the centre and gradually bring together all the ingredients by rubbing between your fingers. 2. As they all come together add the water gradually to bind it and form it into a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge. 3. To make the filling, place the butter into a frying pan over a medium heat to melt. 4. Add all the sliced onions to the pan, and cook gently to soften, carefully making sure that they don't burn. 5. When softened remove from the pan and place on a plate to cool slightly. 6. Add oil to the frying pan. Slice the bacon into thin strips and cook in the pan until golden and crisp. Remove from the pan and place on kitchen paper to drain. 7. Place the eggs into a bowl and whisk with a hand whisk. Add the cream and a pinch of salt and pepper. Finally add the grated cheese and sliced onions. 8. Take the pastry out of the fridge and roll out on a clean, floured surface. Carefully line a greased 23cm flan case with a removeable bottom. Trim off any excess. 9. Take the cheese, onion, cream and egg mixture and pour into the pastry case. Lay the bacon on the top. 10. Place on a baking tray on the bottom shelf of the oven. Cook for 30 – 40 mins until golden brown. This can be served simply with lambs leaf lettuce or any salad leaves and a dijon mustard dressing.

The last week in March March see’s the start of the busiest season for birders. birders. Many of the winter visitors are are still present present and beginning to show signs of their breeding breeding plumage and many of our resident resident species are are in full song and trying to attract a mate or proclaim proclaim their territory. However, However, much as the above are are great great things to witness in themselves, nearly all observers will be scanning the skies for the first arrival of our summer migrants. One of the first to arrive are are the Sand Martins, look for these small brown brown and white relatives relatives of the Swallow as they hawk over beaches and sand dunes re-stocking re-stocking their body fat supplies and also looking for suitable sandy banks in which to set up home. At the same time the handsome Wheatear appears, usually first spotted in its typical upright pose as it perches on fence posts or areas of short grass, watch out for a flash of
brilliant white just above the tail, another sure way to identify this species. As you walk along the beach towards towards the very end of the month listen out for loud harsh “kerrrick calls of Sandwich Terns, Terns, a real real sound and sight of summer, large tern summer, a lar ge lanky ter n with a striking shaggy cr crest est and long black bill tipped with yellow. Surprisingly although it is one of the first to arrive, it is usually one of the last to leave. Thinking of heading out to try and see these birds? birds? Then head for places like Kingston, Findhorn Burghead Findhorn Dunes, Bur ghead or Merkinch but wherever wherever you go enjoy the longer evenings, warmer prospect warmer weather and the pr ospect of long hot summer days! Next month we continue on the migrant theme and look forward forward to the arrival of one of our most iconic birds birds (and my emblem for “Birding “Birding Ecosse) the Osprey. Osprey. Dreaming of... ...India
India is a diverse land of stunning contrasts and has become a very popular holiday destination over the years. In this dynamic and diverse country it is not surprising to find numerous rich glories of the past, varied traditions and values, and various interesting cultures. The bustling cities, rare wildlife, pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, tranquil backwaters, barren deserts standing in contrast with rolling foothills, and innumerable ancient monuments - all this makes India a fascinating travel destination. Northern India is famed for its sights and the monuments of the Golden Triangle, which include the Taj Mahal at Agra, The Pink City of Jaipur, the scenery of Tiger country, the splendours of Rajasthan and the rush of Mumbai and Delhi. The Capital of India is Delhi, which itself is a contrast of old Delhi, hectic and fast-paced with higgledy-piggledy streets thronged with millions of people with motorbikes and tuk tuks, and New Delhi neatly designed with floral parks, wide avenues and regal monuments. Tiger country comprises 4 national parks spread across hundreds of miles encompassing jungle vegetation and an abundance of wildlife. Southern India is famed for Goa and Kerala in particular. Goa is distinct from the rest of India with its relaxing beach holidays and its tropical climate, scenery and paradise beaches. Away from the developed resort visitors discover remnants of Portuguese colonialism with medieval churches, mosques and temples to admire. Kerala has palm-fringed sandy beaches, lush green vegetation and still backwaters. It is big for growing tea and coffee, the plantations growing up from the sea. In the very north of the country is the border with Nepal. Nepal sits uncomfortably between India and China, and a visit there brings together the greatness of the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains with the poorness of the people who live there. October to March is the best time to visit the Northern states. December & January can experience light to heavy fog in the northern plains. October to April is the best time to visit the southern states. A valid visa is required to enter India. The flying time for Delhi is 8hrs, Mumbai (Bombay) is 9hrs and Calcutta is 10hrs from London.

Support for Young Carers It is estimated that there could be as many as 100,000 Young Carers in Scotland A Young Carer is a young person who is carrying out emotional or physical caring tasks for another person. That person may be a friend or relative who is disabled, has a chronic illness, mental health issue or misuses drugs and/or alcohol. The average age of a Young Carer is 12 Many live in lone parent families 1 in 10 are caring for more than one person If you are a young Carer, Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) will work with you to ensure that your caring responsibilities are minimised and that you have the opportunity to access the full range of opportunities available to young people, allowing you to be ‘just like other kids’. The support we offer includes lots of things, for example: Listening to your needs and working with you to put in place the ‘help’ you think would make a real difference Supporting you to take part activities in your own community e.g. clubs or groups Offering opportunities to meet other young Carers and share experiences Working with other professionals to make sure that your caring role is manageable and you able to do the same things as your friends Support to get qualifications which give you recognition for the skills you have developed as a young Carer Offering information, training and advice which you understand and helps you to feel more confident and able to care

“I've Got My Own Religion” truth of God's Word! Just believing something doesn't make it so. Jumping off the top of a high building onto the street below will kill you, no matter how strongly you believe otherwise. Entering into eternity when you die with the firm belief that there is no God, or that your beliefs or your works are good enough to merit His approval will not change the outcome: "Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15). There is no hope for you outside of Christ and your accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour –We have all offended a Holy God and are under sentence of eternal These are sayings which you will hear from many punishment – but there is a way of escape! Just as the Jews had to put their hand on the head of the burnt people today: offering, as atonement for their sin, so we have to lay our “I’ve got my own religion” hand on His head (as it were) and personally accept His “Whatever you believe is alright.” blood as making atonement for us. “Everybody has their own beliefs.” Truth is not a matter of opinion. Either something is “Just so long as you believe something.” true or it is false. Jesus Christ claims to be the truth. They sound nice, and help to make people feel He did not say "I am a way," but rather, "I am the way, the good, since their own beliefs are said to be as truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but valid as those of anyone else. "After all," some say, by Me" (John 14:6). When it comes to faith, it is not, "Just "can you really know anything for sure?"
