This time last year we were in the middle of the Olympic Games, held in various locations throughout the UK. Whilst we had no events locally we do, however, now have a lasting memory in the shape of three golden post boxes located in Lossiemouth, Grantown -onSpey and Aviemore. There were only 7 in the whole of Scotland and this area got three of them! I wonder if we’ll beat that in Rio!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Hard to believe, I know, but summer is here and no doubt many of us will be looking forward to a holiday or may already have been on holiday and are now back at work. Way back in the winter months we flicked through the brochures and websites and picked out that ideal location doing all the planning and preparing in order that everything would go smoothly and trusting that all of our expectations were met. The holiday begins not when we reach the destination but rather when we set off - indeed when we begin all the planning and preparing. A reservation needs to be made, it needs to be paid for, we need to travel to the destination of our choice. As I had left things rather late for the first week of my holidays (thank you laterooms.com) and was busy trying to arrange things, I was struck by the comparisons between preparing for going on holiday and of journeying through life. Life is often referred to as a journey. It has a start, our birth, it has a journey, our length of time here on earth, and it has a final destination, our death. And just as we need to book and pay and prepare and get things

sorted out for the two week vacation, so we also need to give thought to our final destination. The bible teaches that there are only two possible destinations following our final journey - one is heaven and the other is hell. It also encourages us to make the right preparations in order for us to be assured of our destination. We need to reserve our place and that is done by putting our trust in Jesus Christ who, in John 14:6, makes it clear when He says “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. But that is only the start. That is when we begin the exciting adventure that is following Jesus, the One who came that we may have life and live it to the full (John 10:10). Like our holiday, the destination is booked but we need to travel towards it however, unlike our holiday, the payment has already been paid. That is what Jesus did when He died on a cross some 2000 years ago. He paid the price for our sin and because of that He is our entrance into heaven. What preparation have you made concerning your final

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS ExTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 14TH MAY 2013 OF THE CITY AND ROYAL BURGH OF ELGIN COMMUNITY COUNCIL

MATTERS ARISING KING STREET: James Wiseman said that the planning application had been granted and that he had asked for an explanation from the Planning Officer to which there had as yet been no reply. GLENMORAY: James Wiseman reported that he had yet to set up a meeting with the Manager of Glenmoray Distillery regarding the floral display. POLICE UPDATE Inspector Ewan Strachan said that his reports in future would focus on the main headings of the Multimember Ward Plans which are Antisocial Behaviour, Dogs, Speeding, Parking and drugs and alcohol. Inspector Strachan reported that a number of endeavours had recently benefited from the Police Scheme whereby desk based officers undertake other patrol work. The Campaign against violence, late night premises checks and bail checks all benefited from this. Two officers have been trained on speeding and targeted streets advised by the Community Council. These officers will supplement the 24/7 coverage of the trunk roads. During May there was also a focus on school areas for litter, parking and dog fouling resulting in the issuing of a number of fixed penalty notices. Pat Paterson reported a car had been egged on 12th April but not reported because the recipient thought it was too small a crime to report. Inspector Strachan advised us to encourage reporting of anything of concern because they cannot act if they do not hear of the problems and often minor problems have an impact on quality of life. In response to a question from Alastair Kennedy, Inspector Strachan reminded us that Crimestoppers is still

in operation and is independent of the Police but added that it is not a 24 hour service. COMMUNITY WARDEN UPDATE Kathy Grant reported that the Community Wardens had a busy month including issuing 6 Fixed Penalty Notices two of which are going to court. Schools were targeted for litter, smoking and these patrols are to be continued. In trying to encourage a neighbourhood watch scheme in Pinefield, 230 households were contacted and only 3 responded. Kathy Grant had followed up Anne Glover’s complaint of dog fouling at Ladyhill but has not found any positive leads. STAGECOACH UPDATE Steven George advised that Stagecoach are awaiting a decision from Moray council on funding of tendered services which would likely impact on communities but Stagecoach intend to trial some routes on a commercial basis to ease the impact. The 5 and 10 services are being worked on for punctuality. Alastair Kennedy commented positively on the loos and wifi now present on many services but then asked about the real time information boards which do not seem to work. Sandy Gallacher advised that the real time message boards were operated by a 3rd party and Stagecoach did not have any control of that. It was pointed out that there is one message board at the bus station which is operated by them and was up to date. Alastair Kennedy raised a point brought up by a member of the public about waiting room opening times for Megabus journeys. Sandy Gallacher said that he did not control the Inverness bus station and could only pass the query on. There was also a useful discussion on the use of Megabus from intermediate stops

where it is acceptable to book a Megabus say from Aberdeen to Inverness but to get on at Elgin and off at the Airport but if you do you are not guaranteed a seat! ROADS & TRANSPORTATION EIGHT ACRES FLOWERBED: The Eight Acres flowerbed continues to be maintained by George Littlejohn and Mary Wall and an Oyster Catcher is currently nesting on the site. FOUNTAIN AT DR GRAY’s: George reported that the work was complete and looked good but the fountain looked somewhat lost in that location. James Wiseman confirmed that the Glen Moray proposal was sufficiently substantial to look at moving it. JOCK INKSON’S BRAE: Following correspondence from Harry Torry, George spoke to Moray Council about the adequacy of signage at the junction of Jock Inkson’s Brae and Old Mills Road. James Smith (Moray Council) visited the site and the signage has been updated. ELGIN - LOSSIEMOUTH CYCLE PATH: George reported that the Moray Council had trimmed the bushes encroaching on the cycle path and replaced the reflectors as requested. Pat Paterson said that there was now a lot of sand on the cycle path to Lossie and it was dangerous because two cyclists can’t pass due to the narrowing of the way and the sand itself is a hazard. REVIEW OF MORAY COUNCIL COMMUNITY COUNCIL SCHEME Alastair commented that he had not received any responses to collate but would respond anyway. Alastair specifically asked for any comments about the suitability of the Community Council Handbook.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

Parliament Blog

When Scott McLeod from Lossiemouth approached with an idea for the use of the former Nimrod hangars at Kinloss, it struck a chord. His belief that their size might make them ideal for use as film studios was one that I felt was worthy of further investigation. I was delighted then to take the idea further through Creative Scotland and the site owners, the Ministry of Defence. These discussions are at a very early stage and while it might seem an ambitious project it is only by exploring such things that we can make them happen. Certainly, I do not believe that anyone can deny the natural beauty of the Moray landscape lends itself to projects of this nature – and only recently a leading film industry executive was in Inverness speaking of the strengths to be found in the north of Scotland.

I must congratulate everyone concerned in putting together the European Pipe Band Championships in Forres. This was a tremendous event and I know through talking to competitors from far and wide how much they appreciated the hospitality shown by the

people of Moray. Events such as this, the Spirit of Speyside Festival and the forthcoming ‘Scottish Six Days’ Orienteering event has placed our region firmly on the map as a world-class destination that can more than hold its own in hosting international competitions. We can now look forward with confidence to the Pipers of the world returning to Forres again next year, the year after – and following that, who knows?

“Our prices for lawn fertilization often work out cheaper than buying from your local DIY store or garden centre...”

A

Lawn is a Happy Lawn!

Lawn care involves more than a quick mow once a week. Just as beds and borders need constant attention for the best results, lawns are the same! Moss, thatch and neglect are common problems. “there is no one fix solution,” said Keith Parker of Highland Green Lawn Care Services. “you need to replenish nutrients at regular intervals to get a good-looking, healthy lawn. Good drainage and lawn servicing is also key to avoiding potential problems.” With 20 years’ experience, Keith knows his turf. “I begin as lawn care manager with Greensleeves in West Yorkshire, where I trained,” he said. ‘I was so impressed by the end results that when we moved to Lossiemouth to be closer to our grand children, I decided to start Highland Green Lawn care Services.”

The grass is now greener all along the Moray coast, from Keith to Inverness. “Our core business is feeding lawns with our slow release fertilizer with no-scorch technology,’ Keith said. ‘Lawn fertilizer treatment usually consists of four visits a year through the growing season from March to the end of November. Each treatment has different balanced nutrients.

‘But even with fertilizer, lawns will struggle to grow and prosper if they contain thatch (which stifles growth), moss or excess compaction. ‘Our scarifying service removes thatch and moss. Our machines tend to slit the soil where possible to allow new grass to spread more easily. ‘Hollow tine aeration is another often neglected area in lawn treatment. We use heavy duty industrial machines to decompact the lawn and allow oxygen, water and nutrients to reach the root zone of the grass.

“This helps to strengthen shoots. The result is thicker, healthier, lush green lawn.’ After every treatment, the team removes all waste from site including the cores from aeration. “Leaving cores on a lawn is not good practice as they do not break down or compost easily,” Keith said. ‘They can end up being trodden or squashed back into the ground, which defeats the object really!” “lawn care can be hard work for gardeners,” said Keith, “but we have the professional equipment and the know-how. Our prices for lawn fertilization often work out cheaper than buying from your local DIY store or garden centre, and you don’t have to do it yourself!” From ‘handkerchief’ size lawns to large estate grounds, Highland Green has swards of happy customers. “I get great satisfaction from turning a no hope jungle into a lush green lawn, “ Keith said. “Customers say you can always tell which lawns have had the ‘HG’ treatment down their street!” For a FREE no obligation survey and quotation, please call Keith on: 01343 811114.

Professional L.A.W.N C.A.R.E SERVICES

IS YOUR LAWN NEEDING A HEALTH CHECK? Beautiful gardens are created by providing the best growing conditions based on a solid foundation of inputs such as fertilizers, water, seed and control products, when necessary. Core aeration - which can be performed in the spring or autumn improves your lawn's health and beauty, optimizes root development and reduces thatch and associated problems. It also deepens your lawn’s root system for greater resistance to disease, insects, drought and heat stress, improves drainage and improves air, fertilizer, water movement.

Hollow Tine Aeration Removes cores from the lawn to de-compact the soil. Tining also helps allow water, nutrients and oxygen to reach the root zone of the grass plant more easily. Scarifying Will thin out and remove much of the thatch and moss which has built up over the last season (which was extremely wet last year) giving room for new shoots to grow and spread for next Spring.

We Create Lush & Healthy Lawns Across The Moray Coast Please phone for your no-obligation survey, analysis & quotation

Dreaming of...

ITALY

Which part of the boot to head for next? Italy is a wonderful country due to its fabulous climate, enviable gastronomy, fantastic wines, beautiful scenery, magnificent architecture and rich heritage. It has long been a favoured haunt for British travellers. Playgrounds for the rich and famous for centuries, and home to poets, artists and composers, the Italian Lakes are areas of outstanding natural beauty. The largest of the Italian lakes Lake Garda boasts fjord like scenery in the north with gently sloping hills covered with vineyards, olive groves and lemon orchards to the south. Visitors from all over Europe enjoy swimming in the clear waters and enjoy the atmosphere. It boasts a wonderful Mediterranean climate with mild summers and mellow winters, and due to its clear clean waters, is a particular favourite for swimming Historic steamers ply their trade between the resorts. Boat and hydrofoil trips are common all around Lake Garda. The Italian Lakes provide opportunities for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, scuba diving, trekking, tennis and golf. Sirmione is a medieval town situated at the end of a long peninsula at the southern end of Lake Garda. It is made up of a maze of narrow streets that are limited to traffic and has good restaurants and cafes, elegant boutiques and villas and a wealth of historic interests including the impressive 13th century Scaliger Castle which stands at the entrance to the town. Gardone Riviera is a pretty resort town situated on the Gulf of Salo on the western shores of the Lake. Sheltered by the mountains, it is blessed with a wonderful subtropical climate. As well as cafes, boutiques and artistic trattorias, there are attractive parks, a lakeside promenade and botanical gardens. Desenzano in the south west boasts lovely beaches and a charming piazza with al fresco cafes. Garda, to the east, once a fishing village, is now a colourful resort adored by wine connoisseurs for its proximity to the Bardolino vineyards. Limone, its shores dominated by lemon groves, boasts traditional fishermen's houses and narrow winding streets. Direct flights are available to Lake Garda from Inverness and Aberdeen on selected dates, either to stay by the Lakeside for a week, or to visit Verona, Assisi, Rome, Florence, Siena and San Gimignano as well.

info Elgin Businesses Welcome Visitors to the City Businesses in Elgin City Centre have been supported by Elgin BID to set up Visitor Information Points (VIP’s) throughout the City. The VIP’s will provide visitors from Moray and beyond, city centre information points where they can pick up leaflets and ask for advice about what is going on in the area. Gill Neill, Elgin BID Manager said “the businesses are at the heart of the city centre and this initiative provides them with another opportunity to make visitors, both local and from further afield, feel welcome. Elgin and the surrounding area has lots to offer, and the enthusiasm of the businesses who have volunteered to host the VIP’s is bound to make people visiting the area feel at home. We could not have done this without the Visitor Information Point staff at Elgin Library, they have been incredibly supportive and helpful.” Vic Flett, owner of Sound and Vision on South Street said “I primarily wanted to offer our premises as a VIP, as I know a lot of visitors will be looking for a visitor information point in the town, we hope that offering our visitors guidance on what Elgin and the Moray area has to offer, we will help to meet this need, while giving us the chance to show off what we offer here in Sound & Vision.” The VIP’s are located in :Sound & Vision

More businesses will be coming on line in the near future. Lee Barton owner of Olive Tree Chocolate said “As a small independent company it is important that we support each other. We have a great deal of local knowledge which we are able to share - and we do get more touring visitors than maybe you would expect. As the shop that is next door to what used to be the Tourist Information we still have regular visitors from people who are not able to locate the new Tourist Information immediately as they haven't realised that it moved some time ago. This service provides us with the information to give out directly as well.” It is easy to see by the comments provided by the businesses that they are determined to support and enhance the tourism offer in Elgin. Chef’s Confidential Minted Panna Cotta with Red Berry Jus Ingredients 250ml milk 250ml cream 3 gelatine leaves 200g caster sugar 10 fresh mint leaves 2 teaspoons of crème de menthe 250g raspberries 250g strawberries 250ml of water 200g of sugar Extra berries and crème fraiche for decoration.

Method Soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water. In a sauce pan, bring to the boil the milk, cream, 25 grams of the sugar, mint leaves and crème de menthe. Once boiled, squeeze the gelatine leaves dry and stir into the cream mix until it’s all mixed. Pass through a sieve, pour into 4 round moulds and put in fridge for at least 3 hours to set. For the Red Berry Jus put the rest of the sugar, berries and water in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Check it’s sweet enough and not too thick (you want a clear soup consistency). Pass through a muslin cloth, pressing on the berries gently to get all the juice out. Allow to cool. To serve, dip the panna cotta mould in hot water and turn out in a soup bowl. Pour the jus around the panna cotta then place some berries around it with a small spoon of crème fraiche on top.

SAVE MONEY and keep warm this winter with our new heating from Germany Simple to install, powerful, economical, also ideal with wind and solar power This incredible heating could be the answer to help beat the ever increasing energy costs. Amazingly it is not gas or oil, nor solid fuelbut clean electric! All you need is a standard electricity supply and NO special night tariff. In Germany, Austria, Poland Russia, Eastern Europe and increasingly in the UK, more and more people are choosing to heat their homes and offices with this very special form of electric heating in preference to gas, oil, LPG or any other form of conventional central heating or night storage. When you see this incredible heating for yourself, you could be next! As you can see from the picture, the heating looks just like a conventional radiator but STOP! It is very, very different! Put simply that clunky central heating boiler that needs constant servicing and replacement parts isn’t the only choice any more! Now you can choose to heat your homes, offices or extensions or conservatories with this incredible German heating which provides individual control over every single room without the need for a central control or space to site a boiler. Now the

boiler space can become a valuable storage area! Installation takes minutes and running is completely clean with no danger of leakage, no holes through walls, no floor boards up and no tradesmen trundling around the house wielding pipe cutters, spanners, hammers, wrenches and dirty work-boots! This incredible German heating simply plugs in and that’s it! Job done! You can even do just one room or the whole house. Get your free info pack right now by calling 01343 819676 or online at www.elsco.co.uk This heating is NEW in Scotland yet in many parts of Europe it has been a mainstream form of heating for a long time. We are the only outlet for this heating in the whole of Scotland, now giving a truly Scotland wide coverage operating from Glasgow for the central belt and borders and Elgin for Grampian and Highlands and Islands. Discover for yourself this incredible German heating, get your FREE info pack right away by calling Elsco Heating on 01343 819676 and ask for John or online at www.elsco.co.uk

ȱ¢ ȱ ě ȱ ȱ ǵ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ “What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call upon thy God.” (Jonah 1:6) Reader, you are not indifferent to things which affect your health, your circumstances, your prosperity or your future in life. Then why so indifferent to that which is of vastly greater importance than all these things put together – your eternal salvation? Indifference and unbelief does not annihilate God, your responsibility, sins, judgement or eternity. The plague of sin is in your heart; your members are yielded as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin; and the end of these things is death. The peril is great and real, do not trifle with it. You may treat the soul’s relations with God, and all the things that He has made known, as merely matters of opinion. The poor comfort which indifference and unbelief yield now, will be snatched away by the hand of death. The man who probably never prayed on earth prays earnestly in hell (The rich man and Lazarus, Luke 16). Here we see that this man, who would have laughed at any spiritual concern while on earth, is now anxious about the souls of his brethren, but too late.

How you must hate God, when you will perish rather than accept His invitation of salvation found alone in His Son. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) In saying this I am assuming that the reader knows the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ but maybe I am mistaken. Let me say, then, that through a crucified, risen and glorified Saviour – the Son of God, Jesus Christ our Lord – God is proclaiming the forgiveness of sins, and eternal salvation. The invitation is open to all. The poor may freely take these priceless blessings for they are the gift of God. The rich surely cannot afford to be without them. And as for the good and righteous, even they may be saved if they cast their pride to the winds, and take the sinner’s place in repentance towards God. “God...will have all men to be saved.” (1 Tim 2: 4) The Son has been given; Jesus has died; and the whole universe can see at the cross of Christ that God is neither indifferent to sin, nor to the need of man who has fallen under its power. Let indifference be banished from your heart. Turn in repentance to God, and receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour. For your life hangs on a thread; the record of your sins is on high; and the blackest midnight is brighter than the darkness of a Christless grave. “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out...” (Acts 3:19)
