For all that each WIN family member did in the last few months to ensure learning continues and our children are happy, engaged, learning, and staying happy and healthy!!

The learning was different but all students, parents and teachers upskilled overnight and we all came together to ensure we do the best we can and we keep trying, keep working together, keep communicating, keep evaluating,

demanding times and converting challenges to opportunities to excel.

Simply impressive and so proud of each one you who engaged, enjoyed and excelled!!

I am most grateful to all my staff for their time, sincerest efforts in upskilling, stepping out of your comfort zone, and the ever patient, calm and most passionate and dedicated approach to reach out to every child and parent.

If I were to draw a graph, we would see the steepest curve of teachers’ engagement in training and promptly applying all new learning successfully. Thank you for never ever giving up, for being ever ready to evaluate and seek ways to improve and evolve – all to ensure our students will get the best.

My most humble appreciation to our parents for their engagement and communicating with us so well, for taking our calls, for writing to us and meeting in Microsoft Teams. You all have wholeheartedly engaged, communicated so promptly and positively that it led us to work as a team with a common goal – our children’s success.

I am reminded of – “Carol Dweckthat nothing is fixed. That we can change everything from intelligence to creativity to athleticism (and even our characters) through persistent and adaptive effort.”

This edition is very special – it captures a period which will always be looked into in history, I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to Mishal and Mir along with their most talented team for such a brilliant edition.

Speaking of learning, as students we have truly evolved. It is said that disruption presents the most exciting opportunities.

The past 3 months are testimony to the tremendous growth we've experienced as students and the much relevant 21st century skills we've honed. This was a new situation for everyone - students and teachers. We marched right into the unknown with determination, grit and the faith that, this too, we shall overcome. We did and how!

It's with great pride that I present to you this very special edition of WIN Times – the QUARAN-SHINE DIARIES which literally chronicles a fragment of history- a true celebration of the three months of DL and a befitting conclusion of Academic Session 2019-20.

I take this opportunity to thank all the esteemed mentors- SLT, leaders and teachers- at Winchester for making this a memorable and enriching year for all students. A heartfelt thank you to all students, parents and teachers who have contributed to WIN Times and made it an enthralling read.

Farewell, Mama Saher 1949-2020 On 2nd June 2020, the WIN family lost one its most precious jewels – our beloved Mama Saher. We all remember Mama Saher’s smiling face, her special ways of spreading love, care, kindness and how she was always bringing everyone together. Our school and the WIN family will never be the same and we will all miss her and her special ways with which she touched our lives.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mama Saher’s family at this time. Her daughter Deemah, and her sons, Samer and Tamer, are loving and caring children who were beside her throughout, taking care of her.

The Winchester School, Jebel Ali has created a website for family, friends and colleagues to share and celebrate Ms. Sahar Adel’s life - we are looking forward to weaving a rich tapestry of memories for us all to treasure. The past months have been challenging for sure; nonetheless they have been highly conducive to new learning, digital learning to be precise. Who would have thought that in the year 2020, we'd be digital learners navigating from one online class to another while simultaneously jumping various platforms like Microsoft Teams, Pear Deck, Padlet, Quizizz, Microsoft Forms and so on. We've learnt skills we absolutely wouldn't have in many years to come. Yes, change is disruptive, but change leads to growth.

I wish to take a moment to say thank you to the school leaders and my teachers for being absolute superstars and ensuring that the transition from the brick and mortar classroom to the digital one was seamless.

When the pandemic is behind us, the world would be rebooted. It will never go back to what it used to be.

But then why should it when it can evolve into something better? I know that it will for my faith in human ingenuity is infinite.

With that positive note I sign off for the summer.

As the world is experiencing a pandemic, this famous quote by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inspired me to think that life during a pandemic is tough but not impossible. Before the pandemic, I used to be interested in going out to play sports and get together with my family and friends, but for the last 3 and a half months, I am at home, spending time with my parents and maintaining social distancing. As the school closed due to the safety of the students, we all started distance learning which was a new platform introduced by all the countries so students could continue their education safely.

During these months, I have learned to cook some of my favorite dishes (under adult supervision of my parents). I played lots of board games with my parents such as Ludo, chess, monopoly, Pictionary and pool.

During this time, I was also busy drawing, doing origami, building Lego models, watched lots of movies and series and read lots of books. I hope this pandemic will be over soon and we start living our normal lives like before and forget social distancing can go outside with no fear.

Stay home, stay safe.

Adjacent to the legion of circumstances which should’ve extinguished any chance of these few months actually being remotely pleasant, Term 3 should’ve actually been a catastrophe. A setback. Should’ve been congested into its pulp. On the other hand, we had our Winchester teachers, staff, the UAE government, and of course the Internet, ceaselessly embodying the appearance of a safety net. From the ongoing treadmill of online inquiries, submission predicaments to simply struggling with maintaining our wellbeing, Winchester was always an open embrace to

our marred wounds. This interweaving pattern of Winchester and UAE’s implementations helped me personally to grow & truly test my capabilities.

2020 has clearly been an eventful year, one with many ups and downs, I think most of us can agree on that. Regardless, it has been a memorable one, with amazing events and a great learning space, and we are all blessed to have such luxuries. My experience of this year has obviously been stressful, but still very sociable and open to all. It made me value my friendships and reminded me that anything can happen at any time, so you should do as much as possible when you have the ability to. While term 3 was definitely different, the teachers and SLT kept our learning progressive and persistent. I would really like to appreciate the hours of

lessons, setting up multiple assignments and working tirelessly to make our Senior Copy Editor learning experience as effortless as possible. I would like to conclude by and Columnist wishing you all a happy vacation and best of luck for the next year!

Term 3 was a rollercoaster. There were highs and lows, ups and downs.

There were times where we were happy that we were coming to the final months of our academic year. But then COVID-19 turned all our plans upside down.

Nevertheless, we adapted to the new normal and immediately took over online learning as our way forward. The transition was swift yet smooth to say the least. It is imperative to commend the teachers and staff

members to assist in this transition. With this, the year had also come to a beautiful end with an online graduation and farewell ceremony that went successful. This was something I never even dared to predict happening.

However, the school had done a great job in overcoming all odds and Senior Copy Editor making sure the term still continues in an articulated fashion.

This year, due to the unprecedented circumstances, the celebration had to be online. With over 18 years of experience in teaching and management, leading the curriculum effectively and innovatively has always been Ms. Rhea’s forte. Ms. Rhea has held the post of the Head of KS2, Head of English and the Deputy Head of Primary. Ms. Rhea is also the founder of the WIN Oscars, and in this article, she takes us down memory lane, celebrating one of the most awaited events of the year.

give the students of Key Stage 2 an enriching experience as they explored the unit of Film narrative! Students felt inspired to originate their own scripts, costume designs and choice of location.

Since then to today in the year 2020, the journey has been very enriching. Each year the TEAM of Year 5 and Year 6 teachers and students raised the bar as they celebrate their Oscar award ceremony with great pomp and show.

It has indeed been an enriching real life-learning experience for our young filmmakers.

Students, Parents, Teachers and Guests witness the achievement of our very young and talented students. Each year it is an event to remember! This being the 10th Anniversary of Oscars the theme was “Salute to the Heroes” – heroes being our children and teachers who did not give up even during these unprecedented times, were a living example to the theme. They came up with the best of creativity to make their movies and make this event possible.

“The world has been long questioning where true power lies. Does economy drive politics or the other way around? The coronavirus spread has shown that healthcare is the main power that shapes the economy and politics at a time when a disease brought nations to a standstill.” -HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum The impact of the coronavirus is having a profound and serious impact on the global economy and has sent policymakers looking for ways to respond. China’s experience so far shows that the right policies make a difference in fighting the disease and mitigating its impact—but some of these policies come with difficult economic tradeoffs.

1. Government scrutiny Already, many of the world’s governments are being scrutinized for their slow and unenthusiastic responses to the coronavirus outbreaks. Especially in countries with more authoritarian government structures — such as china — the effects of coronavirus may lead to widespread political dissatisfaction among citizens. This scrutiny is likely to have few consequences in many of the world’s countries, but it may lead to change in others.

2. Changes in trade Coronavirus may also lead to changes in trade, for numerous reasons. For example, as coronavirus continues to sweep the world, many countries will realize the dependence of their supply chains on others’.

Particular supply chains that have been disrupted include those of medical-grade facial masks; in the future, some countries may wish to begin to manufacture masks internally so as to be better prepared for new disease outbreaks.

3. Poor market performance A major economic consequence of the coronavirus outbreak is poor market performance.

This has already been observed in many of the world biggest financial markets — such as those of China and the United States — and is only expected to continue as the outbreak matures.

There are fears that this poor market performance may lead to a multi-year recession, as investors pull their money out of traditional financial instruments to hedge themselves against market volatility.

4. Lack of workers As more individuals fall ill, coronavirus is likely to lead to a temporary lack of workers. Whether this is due to quarantines or workers making the decision to stay home, the end result is the same: companies and governments will be pressed to find laborers. This is likely to result in reduced Economic output, as business grinds to a halt for many.

The ball is now in fiscal policymakers’ court as monetary policy has done as much as it can in this situation. Large fiscal interventions that allow federal, state and local decision makers to address the economic problems where they appear will be necessary. This will allow governments to quickly address the immediate health care challenges but also the quickly escalating economic fallout.

CHANGE: For Better or for worse areebah bint ayaz, year 8a Unless you have been living under a rock for the past six months, you, like everybody else, have steadily become aware of the dastardly crisis gripping our planet, killing thousands and infecting twenty times as more.

Yes, I am talking about Covid-19.

Before 2020, the idea of a novel coronavirus striking silently and dooming us all would have been seen ludicrous at the very least.

Although the previous generation has seen similar disasters such as MERS or SARS, the unfortunate children of our generation are bewildered. Before this pandemic, there used to be a small number of children who used to study online, now everyone does it to ensure social distancing. The world is increasing exponentially in the field of technology and e-learning does help prepare and grow the child, but

did you know that the number of children needing to wear glasses for not being able to see properly has increased by sixty percent?! Social distancing forbids you to socialize physically causing introverts to build deeper cages and extroverts to grow that way too. Loneliness, trauma and depression are all symptoms of being alone for people of all ages. There are some positive approaches to quarantine such as a lesser rate of infection, vehicles being used less, and technological advancements.

I, personally, have been in constant debate about how to spend my time and miss attending school and being with friends, but I have spent my boredom by learning new skill sets and have encouraged others to do so as well. So, it is up to you to decide how you wish to spend your time in lockdown, for better or for worse, and prevent attaining glasses as well!

Hope Probe A Harbinger of Positivity and Optimism Mishal Faraz, Year 8E UAE is a country which has innovation and forward thinking weaved into its DNA. With the establishment of the UAE Space Agency and the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC), the country is taking rapid strides towards becoming the global hub for space science studies.

In the not-so-recent past, we’ve seen the state-of-the-art Khalifa satellite being launched successfully, and Major Hazzaa Al Mansoori becoming the first Emirati astronaut to reach the International Space Station on 25th September 2019. Now, less than a year later, on 14th July 2020, we will see another dream come true – the launch of the Hope probe – or “Al-Amal” probe!

Imagine, not even a year since Major Al Mansoori’s mind blowing journey and now UAE is set to explore Mars!

I wait with excitement to witness this dream unfolding. I strongly feel that this launch could not have come at a more appropriate time. The literal meaning of “Amal” is “hope” in Arabic. With the whole world facing a pandemic and witnessing unprecedented losses, the launch of Hope probe gives the message that this trying time would soon come to an end and that there is a future to look ahead to. I look forward to this event as a harbinger of positivity and

optimism not just for the UAE but for the whole world.

As a young person who was born and raised in the UAE, this launch fills me with a sense of pride.

I cannot hold my excitement to see the launch and then follow the journey of this little wonder called “Hope Probe” to reach its destination – the planet Mars! I actually feel fortunate to be living in an age when we can witness events which are larger than life.

In the past, people could just use their imagination to fathom images of space and the other planets and to actually know more about them. But we will be able to find out so many important answers about the red planet Mars once the Hope Probe reaches there! I’m preparing to be enthralled by all the latest findings and to see the new pictures which this probe will send back.

The massive and quiet outer space holds the answers to many of the challenges humanity is facing right now. The dynamic leadership of the UAE comprehends this completely and hence space exploration is gaining momentum rapidly. The vast arena of knowledge that this trend will open will contribute to a brighter future. For the UAE, the sky has never been the limit – space beckons and the nation is ready to answer that call.

METAMORPHOSIS Innovation in Times of Crisis As the world enters this turmoil, many occupations join hands and work day and night to protect us and keep us updated. In the field of innovation, we have achieved feats out of this world. Biomedical and pharmaceutical breakthroughs have allowed the containment of widespread disaster. If we weren’t equipped with such technologies students would be left stranded without any proper form of education, universities would have to halt their programs which would compromise the education of billions around the world. Innovation and data sciences have allowed airports to devise systematic patterns to manage airport traffic and soften the effect of the susceptible virus. The amazing work of multiple workers, architects and engineers have allowed hospitals to be built within days!

Sources such as spectrum.ieee.org say that robots help keep thousands of Chinese employees safe and sanitized in medical facilities. And such small acts of innovation can save millions of lives. Such breakthroughs are what is needed for us to unite and battle this unfortunate event.

Another example is a robot that kills viruses devised by “TCD startup”, a revolutionary idea that has the potential to eradicate the chances of epidemics as a whole. It is our

duty as a society to protect ourselves and everything around it. We must innovate, regardless of how ludicrous it is – we must unite together and fight our battle.

Innovation has been a major role player in crises way more than you think, from a simple airplane seating plan to a school teaching plan. In fact, our very own elearning program is a great act of innovation by our school and the KHDA. We need to appreciate the presence of innovative minds, from our teachers to engineers to doctors and nurses. Innovation is inescapable and is a priceless tool. As countries work to maintain their economy, they innovate in many ways such as economic planning and job management, creating elaborate and tactical plans that can influence millions altogether. We truly must appreciate the acts of such innovators, governments and companies.

It is surprising to see us all unite and innovate in times of crisis – just envision how it would be if we united together like this regularly? I really appreciate the work of the UAE and multiple governments efforts in containing the current scenario we are in. Now it is our duty to be the citizens for today and innovate for the sake of our well-being and for millions of people.

Remember, there is always someone influenced by your actions. Innovation has no boundary, only abrupt twists and turns.

Conceptualized by our Senior Copy Editor and Columnist, Aarav Pradhan of Year 10F, “Metamorphosis” talks about growth and progression and targets the youth to innovate and spread their ideas, providing a platform for us as students to be creative.

The word metamorphosis means development, and that is what we as the youth do. Its emblem represents a butterfly spreading its wings and metamorphosing, similar to us growing up and gaining our voice and passions. “Metamorphosis” is the burning catalyst ready to create a never-ending spark of creativity in our minds!

A newly identified type has caused a recent outbreak of respiratory illness now called COVID-19.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the main symptoms of Coronavirus usually include: • • • •

A dry cough Temperature Tiredness/lethargy Shortness of breath (in more of severe cases)

Some people may have aches, pains, runny noses and sore throats as well. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected, but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell. The virus spreads in a similar way to flu or the common cold, in large droplets produced by coughs and sneezes. Germs can live on surfaces for several hours.

How to Prevent It Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for c

others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:

Wash your hands frequently. Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with soap and water.

Washing your hands with soap and water kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing. Maintain at least a 2 meters distance between yourself and other people. When someone coughs or sneezes, they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene. Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses.

Seek medical care early if you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Stay hydrated. No matter what happens, it is important to stay hydrated. Staying hydrated is said to help in prevention of coronavirus, because if the virus manages to reach your throat, the water doesn’t allow it to spread in your body. Since we started doing a lot of e-learning, we don’t get out of our chair much. That’s why I recommend keeping a full bottle of water next to you while studying. This way, you can always stay hydrated and never miss anything the teacher says.

How to Stay Updated The Word Health Organization (WHO) made a website page dedicated to COVID-19 with all the important information and advice you may need.

When you scroll down, you will find a lot of videos explaining important information, and documents that are available to download that explain certain things like how to wear a mask and the answers to many questions you might have.

How to Cope with COVID-19 Stress It is normal to feel sad, stressed, confused, scared or angry during a crisis. Talking to people you trust can help.

You must stay at home, so it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle - including proper diet, sleep and exercise.

If you feel overwhelmed, talk to a health worker or counsellor. Have a plan, where to go to and how to seek help for physical and mental health needs if required.

Get the facts. Gather information that will help you accurately determine your risk so that you can take reasonable precautions. Find a credible source you can trust such as WHO (World Health Organization) website or, a local or state public health agency.

Limit worry and agitation by lessening the time you and your family spend watching or listening to media coverage that you perceive as upsetting.

Draw on skills you have used in the past that have helped you to manage previous life’s adversities and use those skills to help you manage your emotions during the challenging time of this outbreak.

WINCHESTER INTERNAL MUN: A GLIMPSE Ms. Amanda Po

Winchester’s first ever online MUN lived up to its expectations as invigorating debates and stimulating committee sessions instilled a feeling of pride within the entire secretariat and faculty members that worked tirelessly to provide students with a platform to showcase their talents on a large scale. The current situation was used very constructively and strategically to create opportunities out of uncertainties.

Delegates set limits beyond their own boundaries and debated vivaciously to come up with resolutions pertaining to the paramount theme of this conference, “THE WORLD ON THE BRINK OF A CRISIS”. As the pandemic has wrapped the world with its contagious nature and gravely affected the way we live, this event was based on the rising yet unprecedented challenges faced daily and how countries should work together to solve them. The WIMUN helped students better understand the world around them and enhance their public speaking and research skills.

WIMUN provided the perfect opportunity to experience the art of diplomacy, leadership, public speaking and teamwork that goes behind sustaining change. It definitely inspired the students to be exemplary global citizens in this increasingly dynamic world.

Rocking it Together Mr. Sunil Joseph As a music teacher, I have been supporting students for their class assemblies, concerts, music competitions, Prize Days, Investiture Ceremonies, sports days, etc. using various types of musical instruments such as keyboard, piano, drums, guitar, violin, recorder, xylophone. pianica etc. During this period I have composed music pieces based on popular instrumental music such as the Cup Song, Pirates of the Caribbean, Yannis, Elton Johns, Yirumah, Arabic songs etc., which was attracted by the audience, who usually give us standing ovations.

Mr. Sunil Joseph was employed as a music teacher for The Winchester School, Jebel Ali in 2008.

During this period he has been working very passionately with his students by conducting musical performances with the school band internally and outside the school.

Recently, the Winchester Band did a virtual performance remotely for the school’s Oscars Award function. It was an absolutely unique and unprecedented experience. All the band members played their instruments at their respective homes – far apart yet in perfect symphony with each other.

The result was an absolutely beautiful rendition of the popular Queen composition “We will rock you”. I am so proud of each and every student. A special thank you to Hannah for bringing it all together in this memorable video.

No Quarantine For Learning Toshith Bhaumik, Year 9G Distance Learning at the Winchester School is a terrific tool that prevented the quarantine of learning.

As the schools were shut due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this new approach that started on the 22nd of March allowed learning continuity. As students of the Winchester School, we utilized our time and continued our studies, by using Microsoft Teams and My Learning platforms, with the help of our teachers.

Our sessions and tasks were organized very well and structured in the form of a timetable set for each year group. The learning took place in two ways, •

Live sessions where students and teachers logged in at the same time on Microsoft Teams. The topic of the day was discussed, and teachers explained the concept and encourage questions to be asked.

Second is online learning wherein we completed the tasks uploaded on the My Learning platform.

Accessing and using these platforms were simple, thanks to the installation guide provided by the school. To access the MS Teams, all you needed to do was to download the app, sign in with your Gems E-learning account and your usual My Learning password. When logged in, you could see the various classes you are in and all the live

session appointments in the calendar section.

For online learning through My Learning, all you had do was to click on the learning spaces folder, access the E-learning file and you would see every subject listed down.

Click on any of them and you could do the tasks for the day according to the subjects specified in the timetable Once done with the tasks, each student uploaded their work on the Google Classroom for the teacher's assessment and feedback. This virtual classroom could be accessed through a unique code provided by each subject teacher. Teachers checked student’s understanding by giving many hands-on activities during the live session.

Students completed these tasks using tools such as Padlet and Linoit, where they answer questions on a virtual wall using virtual post-its. Another tool is Quizizz, which is a pop-up quiz accessed by unique codes. Students not only shared completed tasks in Google Classrooms, but they also used Microsoft Notebooks in the Microsoft Teams platform.

During each live session, there were a few rules set by teachers to allow smooth, uninterrupted lessons to maximize learning time. The rules include: •

It is a must to complete all the work in the notebook and upload them to their respective teacher’s Google Classroom.

My experience with this tool has been terrific. Initially, I was skeptical on how the lessons would go. Would we even stay engaged and interested? I was totally mistaken. The teachers made the live sessions extremely interesting by asking questions, involving us throughout and giving us hands-on activities. My overall experience has been fabulous, and the mix of live and online sessions kept me engaged.

Staying Positive During Trying Times Taneeshaa Pradhan, Year 13A

Has a sudden change in our current global atmosphere altered your daily routine? Well, you’re not the only one. In this dynamic environment, it is important to add order to our lives. This can be done in many ways – especially by giving equal importance to our physical and mental spirits.

It is easy to slip into routines of negativity or laziness, especially as we enter a phase of social distancing. It is common for all of us to hear about how humans are social beings, and so this collective state of isolation is extremely out of the ordinary. Maintaining a positive mindset throughout all hardships in life is an important skill. The upkeep of the mind is a holistic process.

To make up for a lack of routine, it is important to start with having a fixed time to wake up and to sleep. Sleep is one of the key things providing us with the energy to do all productive tasks. With proper sleep habits, we feel more motivated to

take on a new day. After waking up, don’t go right back to bed. Having a day with no commitments does not mean that you should leave your to-do list empty! Giving yourself a sense of purpose can be instrumental in making your days feel worthwhile. The next thing that one should ensure during this time is that they have a rough schedule assigned to most of their days. In addition to elearning, the reduced travel timings and school hours give us time to explore other academic and non-academic interests. As a suggestion, it could be very enlightening to take online courses in specialized topics that spark curiosity within you.

Several academic journals have opened up their databases to make their papers easier to read, and so you could use this break to introduce yourself to the world of academia. If you’re more of an auditory learner, many universities postintroductory lectures online for anyone’s viewing.

On the other hand, it is also important to indulge in non-academic pursuits to give a rest to your brain while also sharpening extra-curricular skills.

You could also use this time on a range of other hobbies, and it will benefit you by sharpening

our brains to feel unsettled. As students in the age of technology, we have access to so many sources of information that our brains can get overwhelmed with them. To ensure a balanced life even during social distancing, take time to clear your head by meditating and spending time with your family. These are the times you will look back to tenderly and cherish the most. All in all, keep making the most of the moment and maintain

your skills. Additionally, make sure to engage in physical activities, whether it be dancing or committing yourself to work out. Your body carries you through your day, so it is your responsibility to look after it. Remember, home workouts are your best friend.

Determination – It’s Not An Illusion Toshith Bhaumik, Year 9G

This is a sketch that shows determination, devotion and hardships faced and overcame to reach one’s big goal in life. One can see the 3D illusion holes that is a metaphor of complexities. Looking closely, each hole shows the layers of hard work and steps of progress that one must keep climbing, eventually creating a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. While sketching this piece, I saw myself entangled into the complexities of these holes and once I finished climbing up all the layers, the outcome sure was fruitful. The message to take away from this sketch is to keep climbing up and never look down or get pulled back! Keep accelerating through all the challenges with focus and intent to reach the big goal.

Does Listening to Audiobooks Count as Reading?

The question is not to debate on which is best between reading books or listening to audio books. No one would argue the importance of decoding in teaching children to read. The conversation today is how to enjoy a good book when we can’t visit the library or the bookstore and to avoid screen time as all learning is online now as well.

When caught in such situation I would like to look at reading as something we should not stress about right now. Let’s check out the benefits of audiobooks for all students.

Happy at Home Aryaman Chakravorty, Year 6B

Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Education and KHDA had declared that schools had to be closed physically to keep the students safe from the COVID-19 spread. During this stay-at-home period, I found a lot of engrossing activities to spend my free time. I read lots of interesting books like Geronimo Stilton and the Guinness World Records 2020. I also watched lots of Scooby-Doo movies and series, Mr. Bean episodes and The Healing Powers of Dude series on Netflix. I played board and card games such as Chess, Monopoly, Guess Who, UNO and Cluedo with my Mom and Dad. They also helped me in studying Mathematics, Science, English, I.C.T. Skills. ‘I Read Arabic’ helped me a lot to study at home and I did French learning online.

Though I could not go out to play or to spend time with my friends because of the dreadful COVID-19’s spread in the U.A.E, my stay-athome time was fun because my family kept me entertained and active.

Hosting My Own Radio Show Mir Faraz, Year 5B This Ramadan, I got to do something really special. I got the opportunity to host my own weekly radio show on Pearl FM radio station. My show was called “First Time”. The premise of the show was history of inventions. Since Science is my favourite subject, I absolutely loved this experience. For every week’s episode, I would research about an interesting invention, find out about how it came into existence, as well as get some fun facts about it. And then, it was showtime! The most exciting part is that I got to host the show with my sister. It was a great way to keep myself busy during the quarantine period while learning so much that I didn’t know before.

MY STAY-AT-HOME EXPERIENCE VICTORIA NEDYALKOVA, YEAR 5F

After taking two, three completely easygoing days I decided to make a rough plan of spending the rest of the stay-at-home period in a fulfilling manner.

Most importantly, staying at home gives us a chance to explore new things. And one of the best things that I loved doing this spring vacation was…. painting! I knew this painter called Bob Ross and knew he was a famous one. But I never really checked out his paintings! So, one day when me and my best friend were playing, she suggested we paint! So, we looked at his paintings and we started. In his tutorials he shares unique tips to master his art. I learned it quickly and started enjoying painting. At the end, it looked really good. I tried another one at home and I loved it! Now I can work on lots of my painting.

Before complete lockdown was imposed, going early in the morning to the beach was a great experience – staying under the sun (which is not so burning hot for now) and swimming in absolutely refreshing and energizing ocean water.

After finishing my first distance course in Coursera couple of months ago, I truly loved it and decided to enroll for a new one – so I got plenty of time to go through their website and choose a new topic to learn about.

When we had to stay home, I took time arranging my books and selecting which one to read next. Reading a book gives me peace and tranquility after an active morning.

Spending quality time at home with my family was unforgettable too – learning something new in the kitchen with my mom or spending time outside in the garden with my father and brother always gives me a cherished feeling.

e had to stay home throughout Term 3 because of the unfortunate COVID19 situation.

But this didn’t mean that playing was cancelled, or listening to music was cancelled, or reading and drawing was cancelled or talking to friends was cancelled.

Another thing is that I had time to master my piano pieces for my upcoming exams and make them perfect; also, I looked up a short paragraph of a song I wanted to learn before but did not get the chance at the time.

Now, I am really looking forward to seeing my lovely teachers and classmates again soon!

Honing the Art of Thinking Clearly Alijaeh Joshua Apit Go, Class of 2019 Were you ever with a friend and thought, “Why do they make such irrational choices?”? Surely you are nothing like that sort. You probably view yourself as being quite good at assessing your own abilities too. Unfortunately, this is actually pretty unlikely. In reality, we are all irrational human beings. We are prone to thinking errors that morph into lousy thinking habits, hence leading us to make poor choices in life. This extends to our personas as students. This should not worry you too much since it’s part of the human experience. However, these mind shortcuts and rules-of-thumb that have aided our ancestors to survive lead us to many fallacies and biases that hurt us more than they benefit us.

This article will support your endeavour of honing your mind into thinking clearly in life, especially in school. Of course, there is the basis of bolstering your mental and physical health through sleep, well-balanced diet and exercise to keep your focus and thought process in class. Instead, this article seeks to enlighten you on some of the mental traps we might fall into every day, and in turn provide you with tips on how to steer your way around them and start thinking clearly in your school environment. #1: FEELINGS OVER FACTS Feelings guide our decisions more than we think. Do you view yourself to be a rational decision maker? Let’s try this mental exercise then, and check: decide right now whether or not you are in favor of

genetically modified food. How did you reach your decision? The rational approach would be to consider both the pros and cons of genetically modified foods. If the sum of your pros minus the sum of your cons is more than zero, thus you have a favorable view of genetically modified food.

But, if you are like most people, you have neither the energy nor the time to be scrupulous. Basically, we are not ultrarational in our decision-making at all! On the contrary, we take mental shortcuts, thus being guided by our emotions to make decisions. When we hear the words “genetically modified”, this triggers positive or negative emotional reactions, affecting how we assess the concept’s benefits and risks. So if your initial judgment is that the concept is beneficial, then you probably concluded that the benefits (i.e., reduced reliance on pesticides) as being greater and the risks (i.e., disruption to the ecosystem) as being smaller.

In this way, our decisions are restricted to what springs into our minds initially. And as pawns to our feelings, we are hindered from making rational decisions, which can be troublesome in area where rationality is highly sought after. Hence whenever there is decision in your project or event planning which is very important, first stop and breathe: Don’t let your emotions get the better of you. Once you’ve settled down, tackle this decision with a clear mind. #2: GROUPTHINK

We tend to follow what the group does, conforming to prevent ourselves from being excluded. When a soloist at a concert puts on an amazing performance, usually someone in the audience spontaneously bursts into applause. Suddenly everyone else joins this chorus. But why? This is due to a phenomenon called social proof, which makes us feel like our behavior is correct when it matches other people’s. One consequence is that the more people follow an idea, the better we believe that idea to be.

We see examples of this everywhere: from stock market hype to fashion trends.

Moreover, we don’t just carry out the same actions as the group; we also change our opinions in order to remain part of the group. For instance, you can see it at work whenever we hesitate in a meeting because we don’t want to be the person who points out flaws and disrupt group unity.

The loss has more impact than the gain.

It is acknowledged through numerous studies and experiments that a negative emotion people suffer when facing a loss is stronger than the emotion they feel when they gain something of the same value.

Hence numerous people stay in their comfort zones because they are afraid that they will make a wrong decision, and sorely regret it later on. Both of these fears keep you where you are and limit your progress.

So take the time to think of how you’re using your time in school.

Thus whenever we are in a group project or any event in which we are working in a team (almost always in our school), have a discussion on being transparent with one another and being constructive in our opinions, lest any irrational decision or halfbaked idea develops and hampers your work. #3: LOSS AVERSION Gaining something will make you happy but losing the same thing will make you much more distressed. Imagine there the last pizza slice in front of you. How good do you feel when you have it in your hands, compared to how bad you would feel when someone else does? When you take that pizza, it’s delicious, but once eaten, the feeling of satisfaction is finished. Contrarily, you might be thinking about that slice of pizza

These mental traps are common. Knowing what you have been and are dealing with means that you will be able to avoid similar mistakes in the future. I hope that you will be able to gradually recognize the way your mind works on a daily basis and minimize falling into these mental traps.
