From The principal’s desk I take this opportunity to extend my sincerest appreciation to every member for all that we have achieved.

Our students are ever inspiring, and our teachers always strive to bring out the best in them, and this year was no different.

I

am most humbled and grateful to every member of the WIN family for their care, collaboration, and commitment to evolve through all the challenging times and coming out stronger together.

There have been some very difficult times that we all have faced, and we have been amazingly courageous and have stayed connected and stepped up to support each other.

Heartiest congratulations to all, as every member is an achiever in more than one way.

I have really enjoyed reading WIN Times’s final edition of the year, and I am confident you will too.

As another academic year comes to a close, all I want to say is thank you! Thank you to all the students, staff members and parents who have enlivened the pages of our school magazine. I believe that creativity reflects one's heart and soul. Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with us. Every month our inbox is flooded with your precious contributions and we feel humbled that you place the trust in us to showcase your creativity.

At WIN Times, our pivotal objective is to deliver a reading experience which is at par with any other magazine you find on the racks of bookstores and hypermarkets – a magazine which is a record of the brilliance of Winchester’s legacy and at the same time inspires you to read more and write more.

This issue is packed with reading material which will keep you engaged for hours. Spearheading the contents are interviews with two distinguished individuals who have found national and international recognition, there are reports about impactful initiatives at school, tips to make your summer fruitful, and reading inspirations, to mention a few.

I've said it before and I'll say it again – every time I put together an issue of WIN Times, I think that it doesn't get better than this, and yet the next issue compels me to say it yet again! That, my dear WIN members, is your brilliance!

WIN Speaks Winchester students express their happiness on getting the COVID-19 Vaccine

I am thankful that the UAE government started giving vaccinations here to our age group so early, whereas there is no news for my cousins and friends in other countries as of now. The school planned it all very effectively.

Blessed Teachings with Mr. Abobakr

Be Kind

Mr. Abobakr Mohammed teaches Arabic and Islamic Studies, and is immensely loved and respected by his students for the sheer dedication he pours into each and every lesson of his. Mr. Abobakr believes that Islamic Education is not a subject, rather, it is a way of life, and his most important objective is that his students become good human beings, guided by values of humanity. In this very special column, Mr. Abobakr will talk of contemporary events and topics in light of Islamic teachings.

Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said: “Every act of kindness is a charity.”

Prophet Mohammad considered kindness as an object you can easily share with others, which means the more kindness you have, the more charity you give.

So how much kindness you have? Have you

asked yourself such a question before? You might ask about how much money, but it never came to your mind about how much kindness? If you think for a moment, you will come to the result kindness wins. Imagine you give a poor person a big amount of money, but in a bad way, just to boast how

much better you are than them. You would hurt his feelings and he may not accept it. But if you did not have money at all and just smiled at his face can you imagine how this small act can change everything? So, money or kindness? Remember even if you have zero money but your heart is full of love and kindness, whether it’s online or offline, face to face or mask to mask, kindness is kindness. No matter who you are, when you are or where you are. No matter whether the person deserves kindness or not, since you treat people according to your behaviour not theirs.

When talking about kindness, the first thing that comes to my mind is Allah SWT, and you may want to know why? It is simply because one of his names is Arrahman, Arraheem. (The most merciful, the most gracious) which are considered by some of the scholars to be the greatest of Allah’s names.

When following Allah, you become much closer to him and to the people as well, since it’s not only Allah you love but people too when you care about them and be kind to them.

This part of kindness is categorized as Akhlaq, meaning manners. It’s the plural form of the word khuluq.

Doing a little research, you’ll find out that this word was mentioned in the Quran describing the prophet’s good manners. And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

I myself was thinking why did not Allah describe prophet Mohammad’s worships? Prayer?

Fasting?

Why specifically manners? What do you think?

You still want to know why?

The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬would keep standing (in prayer) so long that the skin of his feet would crack. People asked him: "Why do you do this, when you have been forgiven of your former and latter sins?" He said, "Should I not be a grateful slave of Allah?"

Okay. 😊 Here goesIt’s because Allah forgives the sins related directly to Him. For example, if you don’t pray but ask Allah’s forgiveness, Allah will forgive you, but if it is related to the people’s rights, so Allah won’t forgive until that person forgives you. So be careful.

That’s why the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I was sent to perfect good character." Hence, always be kind.

from the Academic Year 2020-2021 The past one year has been like no other. The challenges have been unprecedented, but so has been the resilience shown by the Winchester community members in overcoming them. It is paths never taken before that lead to the most pronounced growth curves. Kanchan Kumar Palakode of Year 12, the Secondary Head of Wellbeing, lists down the five key takeaways which stood out during Academic Session 2020-2021.

1. Connection The importance of solidarity and connectedness in the school’s community was so much more important and highlighted for this academic year. More opportunities, activities, and events contributed to the sense of community and helped provide a more wholesome and connected atmosphere. I was able to feel all the more connected and all the more together in an online landscape.

It was one of the most important and influential aspects of the current academic year in my opinion.

2. Creativity The increased implementation of technological initiatives and activities for the academic session of 2020-21 helped streamline education in many ways. The innovation and creativity that the use of technology inculcates in students is something marvellous and I believe it should be something that should be explored more in-depth to make teaching and learning a more efficient process as a whole.

3. Communication One of the most important aspects of this year was the collaborative and effective channels of communication with students and teachers. I feel the extra communication and being able to talk freely with one another is very important to a student’s learning process. Therefore, the increased communication and unity with one another in the school was an important highlight too.

4. Responsibility Responsibility was extremely important as teachers and students both experienced increased levels of responsibility.

However, this led to a fulfilment of the analogy ‘diamonds are made under pressure’ as students and teachers both flourished under this responsibility, and I am sure that it only furthered the progress of the school as a whole and contributed to making better learners and more responsible human beings.

5. Extraordinary Circumstances, Extraordinary Experiences

Finally the biggest highlight for me was the fact that even in the extraordinary circumstances that the year brought with it, I was able to experience or go to school and even be able to interact with friends with safety measures in place. That was an extremely special and wholesome highlight. Sometimes, people may take the experience of school and all that comes with it for granted, however, it is something that is truly great and something that should be appreciated more, especially for the Academic Session 2020-21.

The League of Champions In Conversation with Aryan Lakra, Cricketer Par Excellence Interviewed by Mishal Faraz

Aryan Lakra, Class of 2020, is one of the most illustrious Winchester alumni. 19-year-old Lakra has been living in the UAE for 12 years now and during this period has carved out an indelible niche for himself in the field of cricket – a member of the UAE Men’s Team, Lakra has captained the U-19 Team in the World Cup in South Africa, has played for the Bangla Tigers, and holds the distinction of being the 6th highest wicket taker in the World Cup. In this exclusive interview to WIN Times, Aryan gives us a glimpse into his mind and what it takes to be a champion!

What is your very first memory of playing cricket?

My first memory was me playing cricket with my dad in the tennis courts of Discovery Gardens where he would come and just throw balls at me. I would hit them as hard as I could.

How did you start your professional career?

After playing in those tennis courts my dad got me enrolled in the evening practices in DPS when he saw I had something in me and from there on things just started happening.

Have you faced any challenges on your journey? If yes, how did you overcome them?

There weren’t a lot of challenges but only a few which stayed with me throughout my school life. Such as coming back home from a match at 3 AM and waking up at 6 to go to school. I just learned how to live with them and move on with my life.

You have been playing nationallevel cricket since you were in school, so how did you balance studies and cricket?

It was hard, really, really hard but all the credit goes to my parents and the teachers around me who were really supportive.

Aryan holds the distinction of being the 6th highest wicket taker in the World Cup.

What are you best memories of school?

To be very honest I don’t have one particular memory because I really enjoyed my time in school, but I feel performing on international day in Yr. 13 is something I’ll remember for a long time.

Who’s your biggest inspiration?

My family, especially my dad.

Without him I probably wouldn’t even have played for the school team.

What has been the most memorable day for you on the field?

I think that it would be qualifying for the U19 Cricket World Cup, being the first UAE captain to make our side qualify for the world cup and getting the player of the tournament in the qualifiers.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever gotten that you remember every day?

I got this particular advice from Andre Fletcher during the T10. He told me to “always seek knowledge” and that is something I remember every day.

What do you attribute your success to?

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I think it’s my ability to stay focused, work hard and stay disciplined.

Hopefully leading the UAE Men’s team.

How do you keep yourself energetic and focused?

It isn’t hard for me to do that because cricket is something I love and just getting out on the field gets me energized and focused.

If not a cricketer, what would you be?

I remember giving this a lot of thought back in Yr. 11-12, I really wanted to become a pilot.

It’s never easy to achieve your dreams, there will be good days and bad days but it’s important that you stay persistent and persevere.

Unravelling a Journey of a Decade and Some More!

Adonia Joseph, Secondary Head Girl

Adonia has been in Winchester since FS1. Always a game changer, she has been a part of multiple projects and initiativesshe was the official RJ of the WIN Radio, the founder of the Social Support Club, and the main organiser of multiple Awareness Assemblies. As an active debater in the school team, Adonia has represented Winchester in a variety of competitions like Debate Dubai, Gulf Debates, and World Scholars Cup. She has also been both a Delegate and a Chair in several MUN conferences and has an impeccable record within the Student Government, completing 8 years as a dedicated Student Leaderthe last one as the Secondary Head Girl. In her role as the Head Girl, Adonia has spearheaded several impactful initiatives like the WIN Radio, the Winchester Yearbook and the Interschool Youth Leadership Summit.

As she bids goodbye to Winchester, Adonia is all ready to begin her tertiary education. WIN Times is grateful to Adonia for sharing her graduation speech, which captures some of her most precious memories.

“I’ve been told to keep this speech short, which is difficult, given that I have to unravel an entire journey in just a few moments. So, here is for all the good times we had. The time we entered sixth form and infamously broke the coffee machine within the first few weeks. The time we had a Christmas party and danced and sang our hearts out to Mariah Carey, until the classes downstairs complained. The time our grade was literally caught in the rain, because we had our PE lesson outside. The time we bonded over poetry, stories and feelings that one fateful afternoon. The time we spent in class, the times we teased our wonderful teachers, the times we laughed with our friends, all of it!

But we should also appreciate the time we didn’t have. The time we should have spent saying a proper thank you and farewell to our teachers. The time we should have spent making last-year memories with our friends. All the last times we were deprived of. The last time we sat in a classroom, the last time we ate from the canteen, the last time we sang songs while some talented student strummed the ukulele. But it all worked out for the best, because it made all the times we did have even more special. So thank you to our teachers, our parents, our siblings, and our school for giving us these beautiful moments and memories, and congrats class of 2021! We did it!!”

Though never easy, goodbyes are a part of life. With this issue, we bid farewell to our Senior Editor and Columnist Arjun Kapur, who has graduated from Winchester this year. Arjun has been a part of WIN Times for the past two years and has contributed several insightful articles.

In his regular column The School Economist, Arjun decoded the often confusing fiscal concepts and made them easier to understand for one and all. Within the pages of WIN Times, Arjun carved a niche of his own, and his creative pieces will continue to enlighten and inspire many young minds. All of us at WIN Times wish Arjun all the very best for an absolutely amazing future ahead!

Reading During the Summer Vacation Ms. Veronika Lambova, Primary Librarian Most of us understand why reading is important and associate it with intelligence, but much like exercise, knowing something and doing it are two different things. Here are a few tips to ensure that you read during the summer holidays.

KEEP YOUR BOOKS WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM If you have plenty of books in your house but you never pick them up, look for opportunities to put books in places where you might be bored and a little bit trapped.

Make sure that you have books in every room of the house – the bedroom, the kitchen, the living room, the dining room – make sure there’s no nook without a book!

RESIST THE GADGETS What are the barriers to reading in your home? Many of you tend to reach for electronics before books, so find opportunities to limit access to those devices and reach for books instead. I am not suggesting going screen-free, but rather eliminate that shiny distraction as often as necessary to get a book in your hands.

READING IS READING Comic books are books. Magazines are interesting and educational. Reading is reading, and anything that has words or pictures counts. Even audiobooks require following a story and visualizing the world in your head, making them a wonderful resource.

CHOOSE YOUR READS During the school year, much of what you read will be decided by your teachers.

Summer is when reading should be fun, loose, and a time where you can choose what to read.

ADD THE LIBRARY TO YOUR FAVOURITE SUMMER SPOTS If you need help finding books of interest, why don’t you visit the public library?

The Old Library in Dubai is a 50-year-old library and home to about 25,000 books, and is run by a strong community of volunteers.

Summer is a great opportunity to develop good reading habits in a fun, relaxed environment. And it just may be the chance for you to fall in love with reading!

Reading and Wellbeing The Never-ending benefits of reading VIKTORIA GEORGIEVA, YEAR 6H Reading is one of the most enriching habits that one can inculcate. It is a basic building block of learning, and the reading culture is the philosophy of developing a progressive reading attitude. Reading sharpens the mind and makes a person think logically. Viktoria Georgieva of Year 6H lists the multidimensional benefits of reading and explains how reading is linked to wellbeing and prepares an individual for distinction in life.

READING IS A NURTURED HABIT The habit of reading should be inculcated right from infancy and should be maintained throughout one's lifetime, because reading ensures and enhances the acquisition of knowledge and invariably projects skills and potentials.

Parents and guardians could encourage reading by buying books for their children as birthday gifts and they should ensure that they read them, especially during their leisure times or during the holidays instead of watching TV or playing online games all the time.

Reading culture is one of the valuable assets for any society to embrace and promote, because it boosts human generative powers of thinking for new innovations and development.

An Interview with Mr. Saif Abdulla Radio Presenter, Motivational Speaker, Author Interviewed by Mir Faraz, Year 6 Saying he’s a breath of fresh air is the ultimate understatement – he’s more like a force of wind of positivity, bringing smiles to the young and old in all that he does. A UAE national, Mr. Saif Abdulla is a certified motivational speaker, a popular bilingual event host, and a radio and TV presenter. He is on a mission to spread positivity and immense joy around the UAE through his beaming smile and larger than life personality.

His career behind the mic has been hugely successful, and has seen Mr. Saif head large events in the region for some of the biggest brands. Being the anchor host on The Breakfast Club for PEARL FM, the country’s only family focused radio station has allowed Mr. Saif to grow a large fan base among a niche audience of children and parents in the UAE. With a dedicated approach to all he does, Mr. Saif brings an incredible energy to every project he takes on. His diverse skill set allows him to be versatile as a speaker and host, with a unique ability to appeal to a wide age range of audience. Recently, Mr. Saif had released his first children’s book, The Inspiring Kid. In this interview, Mr. Saif shares what inspired him to write the book, his future aspirations, and his message to all those who aim to make a difference.

You are known and loved for being a radio and TV presenter, a motivational speaker and an MC. When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer?

I'm a big fan of creating happy journals in which I write my daily schedule, gratitude list and experiences. I love children so much and I always wanted to inspire them and make them understand how special they are. That's why I decided to write my first book, The Inspiring Kid. Could you tell the readers about The Inspiring Kid? The Inspiring Kid is the story of a young boy, whose life is an inspiration for all. It gives the message that joy comes from knowing who you are and why you are here. The Inspiring Kid is a story of wisdom, beauty and hope.

What lessons do you want the readers to take away from the book?

Always stay positive, kind and never give up.

How long did it take you to write the book?

It took me around 10 days to finish the book.

What was the most challenging part about writing the book? What was the most fun part?

To be honest, it was all from the heart and I was really happy writing my book. The only challenging part was the first 2 pages.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book?

I learnt that our words are powerful and can really change someone's life from bad to better.

What do your children feel about your book?

My kids love hearing me read the book in a funny way. But I always make sure that they understand the message of the book that life is meant to be hard and challenging and you'll face obstacles in life but believe in yourself and you’ll make it1 Have you already decided what your next book will be about?

Yes. It's a special book for the beautiful powerful girls.

What message do you want to give to aspiring authors?

Keep writing whatever makes you happy/ Also write about things that makes you upset or scared and try your best to overcome your sadness or fears by taking action. And always, always stay positive.

Any message for everyone reading this interview?

All I can say is, be yourself and make yourself proud. You'll get judged no matter what you do. At the end of the day, make yourself happy and the important people around you happy.

All About Books George’s Marvellous Medicine

by Roald Dahl This book was written in 1981 by the famous author Roald Dahl.

Whenever I read any of Roald Dahl’s books, I love them and they always catch my interest due to the different genres he explores, the expanded noun phrases and high vocabulary he uses, and how he describes everything so vividly. His books are very famous, and some have even been made into movies, like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda.

My name is Piyush Sehgal, and I am ten years old. I study in Year 6. I like all kinds of sports and activities and my hobbies include badminton and football.

My favourite subjects are Maths, English, Science, Art, Physical Education, Arabic and French as I have good teachers to teach me. I enjoy reading books of different genres like suspense, comedy, fiction, non-fiction, adventure, and personal experiences. I hope you find pleasure in reading my thoughts and views.

This book is about a grumpy old grandma who is unlike any other grandma. Everyone’s grandmas are kind, sweet, and polite, but not this one! This one is the most horrible one because she commands George to do everything for her while his parents are out.

However, George finds a way to teach her a lesson. One day, when George is alone with his grandma, she reminds him to give her her medicine at eleven o’ clock. George thinks to himself, “I need to come up with a plan if I want to get rid of grandma for good.” He thought and thought and thought! Finally, after hours of thinking, George got a marvellous idea to sabotage Grandma’s medicine by making his own magic medicine. He quickly ran to the bathroom with a stewing pot and poured everything in the cabinet in the pot.

After the bathroom, he then swiftly ran to all the places in the house pouring and squeezing everything in sight into the black pot.

Finally, he creates a very peculiar mixture. He stirred and boiled the strange liquid, then he heard his grandma shout, “Give me my medicine now!” George emptied the real medicine bottle and filled it with the medicine he had made. He happily gave a spoonful to his grandma. Sometime later, his grandma started floating in the sky and fire started coming out of her mouth as if she was a dragon breathing fire!

from inside her stomach. Suddenly, she came down and started growing to the top of the ceiling. George did not expect this would happen. He started to worry that his grandma would break through the ceiling and his parents would punish him. Later, At At that instant, Mr. Kranky and Mrs. Kranky, George’s parents, return from the market. They gasped when they saw George’s grandma scaling the ceiling. Mr. Kranky starts jumping with joy and asks George how he did it. At first, George did not understand why his father was so happy. His dad excitedly explained that they could make a fortune if they used this medicine to make their farm animals bigger, so one lamb can give you a hundred lambchops and one cow can give you milk for days.

George listed all the ingredients he added, and his father kept writing them down.

What followed was several attempts and experimentation- the chicken they were trialling the medicine on would have different side effects. Once, only its legs grew longer. The second time, the chicken started getting smaller and smaller with every passing second. At that moment, Grandma thought that this new medicine was coffee because of its colour. She snatched it from them and drank every drop. She shrank and shrank until she reached her normal height. However, she didn’t stop there. She kept on shrinking. Soon, she was so small no one could see her – she had shrunk out of existence!

I would say that I truly loved reading this book because there were some drastic events which captivated me throughout my reading journey. I would say that the age group for reading this book is 7-15 years. I totally recommend reading this book. It is a fun book filled with exaggerations and strong imagination that will leave the reader grinning from ear to ear.

Winchester Readers Cup Read, Lead, Succeed!

An Initiative by Mir Faraz, Primary Head Boy Held for the very first time at The Winchester School, Jebel Ali, the Winchester Readers Cup (WRC) is a reading based competition aimed at the students of KS2 – Years 3, 4, 5, and 6. The participants were given pre-decided books to read, and then they had to answer an online quiz consisting of multiple choice questions. The competition was held in Arabic as well as English.

The objectives of the Winchester Readers Cup were as follows: • • • • •

To complement the UAE National Agenda 2021.

To propagate the love for reading and encourage students to reap its benefits.

To encourage students to discover new authors, genres, and books.

To provide a platform for students to train for external competitions.

To make students gain an appreciation for the world of words.

The competition entailed students not just to read books, but also to hone their comprehension and retention skills. The competition consisted of two rounds. Round 1 was held on 31st January 2021, and Round 2 was held on 17th March 2021. The prize ceremony of WRC was held on the 1st of June 2021.

More than 400 students participated in the competition. The feedback received is overwhelmingly positive, and the participants have stated that they have benefitted immensely from the experience.

Winchester is proudly a reading school, and the enthusiastic participation in the Winchester Readers Cup proves just that.

In this article, Jaimee shares how she discovered the world of art and also gives tips to aspiring artists to unleash their creativity on canvas.

Being an artist is a part of my identity.

Art makes me happy. You might be wondering how I became an artist. My mom would always say that I am an artist at heart. At a very young age, she already saw how artistically inclined I was through my drawings. I would draw on every space I could see, even on our furniture, walls and carpet. Ha ha. I was lucky my mom understood. She said my drawings were more advanced than what a 2-year old kid normally draws. At first, I really didn’t understand what art was.

Then, one time, I was sitting in the school bus with my friend and saw her artworks. It felt so wonderful looking at those amazing drawings. At that moment, I told myself, I will be an artist like her. From then on, I never stopped learning the art of drawing. I would watch YouTube videos, read art books, and practice every single day. I tried all art media like watercolours, acrylic, oil pastel, sketch pens, charcoal, coloured

pencil, and markers. Whenever my parents would ask what gift I wanted, I would always say art materials. When we would go to the mall, instead of buying toys, I would grab pens, sketch pads and paints.

Art has become part of me. There is no day in my life that I didn’t draw something or the other. I can do my school projects and tasks easier with the help of my art skill. It is also my way of coping with everyday struggles, especially during this difficult situation we are in. The pandemic has greatly affected our wellbeing since children were forced to stay at home for safety.

My art kept me going. Drawing has given me enjoyment and has brought me to different places through my imagination. The moment I hold my pen, I feel like I’m in another dimension where there is peace and serenity. I just love art!

Here are some tips for all the aspiring artists out there!

1. Focus. Make sure that this is what you really want and be passionate about what you do. If you do things wholeheartedly, you are likely to succeed.

2. Strive to create art every day. It doesn’t have to be a perfect piece, but never let a day go by without touching a brush or a pencil.

3. Be patient. If you’re having a hard time beginning, start with simple forms and colours.

4. Be inspired. Get inspiration from anything you see. Go out and see the world. I always keep a small sketchbook and pen in my bag, so if I see something interesting, I draw.

6. Be passionate. You need to love what you do. If you put your heart into every task you do, nothing will ever go wrong.

7. Lastly, never stop learning. No matter how good you are, you still have to constantly learn new things to improve your skills. Continue pushing yourself to be the best.

Observe other artists and study their techniques. You don’t have to do the same. Just get some ideas and develop your own style.

Every student desperately awaits the summer vacations after sweating it out in school for a long term. School work and exams take a lot of out of you, so it’s nice to have a few months to unwind.

You get to catch up on things that you normally don’t have enough time for. However, one of the biggest problems students face is staying productive during the summer break. You spend 2 months having fun and partying about, but when you return to class in early September, you end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. It happens to a lot of people. It’s like starting a car that’s been sitting in your garage for years. The engine is going to sound clunky and congested. Fortunately, this can be avoided by keeping your mind sharp and productive during the summer break, onto a smooth transition back to school, with new experiences.

Digital Safety Keep Yourself Safe Online!

The internet is a truly amazing place, and a wonderful resource.

In the past one year, the time that we spend on the internet has gone up considerably. We can confidently say that the digital era is truly here. Like everything else, the internet has its risks and dangers, but if we are smart and prudent in our online usage and interactions, we can mitigate these lurking dangers almost completely.

In this article, Mishal Faraz, Year 9, lists a few simple but effective tips to keep yourself safe online.

1: Create unique passwords: Creating strong and unique passwords is a must! Ideally, a password should be a combination of numbers, letters in upper case, as well as letters in lower case. Don’t use passwords like your name, your birthdate, your parents’ names, etcetera, as they are super easy to guess. Make sure that your passwords are tough!

Set different passwords for each account that you have.

Never, EVER, share your passwords with anyone, except your immediate family, and change them regularly.

2: Use a Firewall: A firewall is a software which you can install on your device. It is an electronic barrier that blocks unauthorized access to your account and devices, and makes them safe from cyber-attacks.

3: Beware of Phishing: Phishing is when someone tricks you, and tries to get your personal data and login details, by pretending to be a trustworthy company or organization. A bit like fishing, they are trying to hook you into typing in this information. Phishing will usually come as an email or a direct message, and will be designed to look like groups that you know and trust.

4: Be Alert: If you do not know where a link is leading, or who it is from, there are several risks involved in clicking it. It might try to get you to share your personal details, or it might take you to a sight with malware, a malicious software, which will try to steal information from your device.

So make sure that you do not click links that you are not sure of, no matter how tempted you are.

5: Fraud Online Shopping: Be careful of online surveys, giveaways, and things that threaten or rush you, as they are often scams to get your information, or money.

6: Be Careful When Using A Public Device: Say that you are using a computer in the ICT lab at school, always remember to sign out of your account when you are done.

7: Be A Selective Sharer: These days, there are many platforms where you can share your personal information online. Just be cautious about what you share, particularly when it comes to your identity information. This can potentially be used to impersonate you, or guess your passwords and logins. Oversharing on social media is never a good idea.

8: Keep your personal information safe: When chatting or posting online, don’t give away things like your full name, password, or home address.

9: Safe Sites: Want to find out if a site is safe or not? Check if the site starts with https:// instead of just http:// and has a padlock icon in the URL field.

This means that a website is secure, and uses encryption to scramble your data, so that it cannot be intercepted by others.

10: Do Not Accept Unknown Friend Requests: Accepting friend requests from people that you do not know in real life is something that you should never do. Meeting with someone that you only know online, even if it is the friend of one of your friends, can be extremely dangerous, as this person is still a stranger. If someone online requests to meet, or for pictures and videos of you, report it to a trusted adult, such as a parent, immediately.

11: Protect Your Personal Information: Explore privacy settings to protect what you post online, and how much you share with others. In particular, you should always keep person information private, or avoid sharing it online at all.

12: Don’t Trust Everything That You See Online: Do not rely on everything that you see online, as some things could be outdated, inaccurate, not completely true, or biased. To get concrete, true information, compare at least three different websites, consult books, and talk to someone else about what you have found.

Metamorphosis Evolution: The Endless Progression of Time

M

any of us are aware of Charles Darwin’s extensive theories of evolution, but what does that all mean beyond the bounds of scientific knowledge? How has everything around us evolved? How is it still evolving? These are questions we can answer only by “evolving” and enhancing our knowledge.

Evolution is commonly defined as the “gradual development of something or someone”. We have evolved millions of times throughout our 6 million years of existence on Earth alone. However, what lies beyond the surface of this planet is completely uncertain. Based off this definition, it’s pretty clear that evolution is basically all around us. Whether we like it or not, the world will evolve, and that is exactly what is happening right now.

You might be thinking of COVID-19 and how our lives, including our schooling, recreation and extracurriculars have evolved; but the truth is, that isn’t evolution. That’s simply change, because there it has the ability to completely reverse itself. COVID-19 has a limited longevity, but the growth of nations, people, and communities is everlasting.

In one minute, 10,000 planes take off to the skies, 300,000 tonnes of ice melt from Antarctic glaciers, 2500 tonnes of trash are created, and blood flows once around our body. How the world progresses and continues on is beyond our control –

change and evolution is everywhere. As growing students, we too evolve, we gauge the right moralities, improve our critical thinking – all as a consequence of evolution.

Innovation in itself has evolved; we went from creating simple theorem that related an object to the time it takes to fall from a height all the way to studying the trajectory of a 3D object through probabilities and mapping! The possibilities are endless. In the last edition, we had discussed the idea of innovation in language arts, well there’s plenty of evolution there! From the addition of hundreds of new words into the dictionary to the use of one word in millions of contexts, our understanding of simple concepts has evolved yet again into this beautiful masterpiece.

Finally, we are reminded of a time where the youth were ill-represented, where we were too “immature” or “unprepared” to face realism, but here we are, pioneering in advocacy for social, political, and mainly educational disparities. We have united to form several platforms, including WIN Times – there is evolution in our voices.

We do not sit back, we make sure our voices are amplified, loud and clear and that is a true sign of evolution. Like a butterfly, let us evolve and metamorphosise into beautiful beings that flourish even when faced with adversity.

KENYA

The Republic of Kenya is located in East Africa and borders Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Uganda. The country also has a coast along the Indian Ocean to the southeast.

Kenya is one of the few countries which lie directly on the equator. Imagine how exciting it is to stand with one foot in the Southern Hemisphere and the other in the Northern Hemisphere! On that point, the country has an almost constant twelve hours of day and night throughout the year. This determines its pleasant tropical climate too. However, the dry and wet seasons are extreme for the country.

The origin of the name Kenya is not very clear. But let me tell you the story.

Kenya received its name from the tallest mountain in the country – Mount Kenya. It is claimed that when a German Explorer Johann Ludwig Krapf, who actually is the author of the earliest record of the modern name of the country, was travelling with the local Kamba people, he asked about the name of the mountain, and the locals told him it was named “Kiima-Kiinyaa” or “Ki-Nyaa”. The Kikuya people who lived on the slopes of the mountain referred to it as “Kirima Kirinyaga” in their native language, while the Embu people, who also lived on the slopes of the mountain, called it “Kirenyaa”.

All three names have the same meaning- “mountain of whiteness” because of the snowy peak of the mountain. The explorer Krapf recorded the name as “Kenia” that time.

When the country gained its independence in 1963, it got the name the Republic of Kenya.

The capital of Kenya is Nairobi, where most Kenyans live. It was named after a water hole that was in the area before the city was built. The Masai people called this hole “Enkare Nairobi”, which means “cold water”.

Nairobi has another two informal names. The first is “The Green City in the Sun” because of the greenery and the warm climate in the city, and the second name is “Safari Capital of the World”, which is used because Nairobi is well known as a center for safari tourism.

The Nairobi National Park is situated here, representing the world’s only national park within the city, presenting natural wilderness with wildlife and bird species.

The capital of Kenya is a diverse and multicultural city and is a proven center for business and culture too. It is home to thousands of Kenyan businesses and over 100 major international companies and organizations.

More than 60 different languages are spoken x in Kenya, but the official languages are English and Swahili. The Swahili language is recognized by law as the official language in the country while almost everyone speaks more than one African language. People in Kenya are often especially proud of their native language as it is related with their cultural identity. English is also an official language mostly used for business and education. Thus, many Kenyans speak English extremely well.

The popular slogan from the famous Disney movie “Lion King” - “Hakuna matata” is actually a phrase in Swahili that literally means “no troubles” or “no problems”.

The lyrics of the song were written by Tim Rice, who found the famous term in a Swahili phrasebook.

Kenya became independent in 1963 and the present flag was designed. Each color of the flag has a strong meaning and sends a message to everyone who sees it. The red color represents the fight for independence, the black represents the African heritage, the green is for the landscape and the white for peace. The Maasai shield and crossed spears on the flag represent both the country’s heritage and the defense of its freedom.

Perhaps one of the greatest cultural legacies of Kenya is its national parks and reserves. About 8% of the Kenya’s land is protected area for wildlife conservation. The Kenyan government has set up more than 50 reserves and parks to protect the wide wildlife of the country - around 25000 species of animals and 7000 species of plants have been recorded until now, along with 2000 fungi and bacteria. It may be surprising, but in fact, Kenya is the country exporting more tea than anywhere else in the world. It is called “Chai” and it is served with milk and sugar throughout the day. The tea in Kenya is not just a tea, it is considered some of the best in the world because of its distinctive and rich taste and quality.

Kenya’s cuisine is diverse with its mixture of flavors. While different communities have their own native foods, there is some reflection from the Arab, Indian and British cuisine too. There is no particular dish that represents all of Kenya’s cuisine, but the food that are universally eaten in the country are: ugali – a mush made from corn and often served with greens, sukuma wiki –dish made with collard greens and cooked with onions and spices, and nyama choma – a specialty of grilled goat meat.

Fresh fruits are often the choice for dessert, since Kenya grows a lot of amazing fruits as plump mangoes, oranges, bananas, tree tomatoes, plums, passion fruit just to name a few.

Kenyans are really respectful to their food. Living in a country where a big number of the population lives in poverty and experiences food shortage, so it is very essential and respectful to finish everything once it’s on your plate. It is rare to find Kenyans wasting food or water.

The Green Guide Help Save the Whale s!

Gareth Andrade is an 11-year-old student in Year 7 at The Winchester School who advocates for UN Sustainable Development Goal #14: Life Below Water. Since he was a little boy, he has been passionate about conserving sea animals, volunteering towards beach cleanups, being a conscious ecowarrior at home, at school and everywhere he goes.

He and his brother launched the “Balloons Blow Don’t Let Them Go” campaign in Dubai, in November 2018, and since then he has collected thousands of pledges.

They are the largest animals on Earth, yet they live off some of the smallest. There are around 40 different types of whales which include the largest creature to have lived on the planet the blue whale.

For hundreds of years, people hunted whales for their oil to fuel lamps and candles, to lubricate machinery, and to make margarine, lipsticks and other products. They also used baleen whales to make tennis racquets and corsets! Today, modern technology has replaced the need for whale products, so there is no need to kill whales for their oil. Sadly, some countries still kill whales to sell whale meat for profit – a very expensive luxury for some people.

Consequences from over-whaling include increased carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming and leads to melting of the polar ice caps and changes in the eating habits of many marine animals. Phytoplankton is also a main food source for many species and is important for fish to be healthy and thriving.

Now if a whale were to become extinct or critically endangered, every animal that is linked to it and every animal linked to that one, so on and so forth, will be affected. The balance of the food chain will be thrown out of balance and there will be either a surplus or lack of certain species due to this. The food system will fall upside down.

Recently I watched ‘Seaspiracy’ on Netflix – A journey of a film maker who brought to light how abandoned fishing nets dumped in the ocean and bycatch fishing is affecting the whale population and other marine species in the ocean.

The best solution to stop whaling is educating the population about the issue and raising awareness about whaling and its negative effects. Countries should tell the people how the ecosystem and environment are affected by whaling so more people would understand and know about the problem and take action.

The coronavirus locked us into our homes while the world shifted towards online alternatives. As our dependence on online platforms increases and we make our way through Zoom meetings, emails and various online websites and tools, we tend to forget that the screen we stare at everyday can hurt our eyes over time.

Our eyes are our windows to the world, and we have to take care of them. This holds true more than ever now with the time we spend on screen. Many discomforts are

caused due to the excessive screen time, and some can even lead to vision loss. The common eye problems resulting from excessive screen time are as follows•

Dry, itchy and irritated eyes

Eye strain and fatigue

Blurred vision

•

Double vision

•

Mild to severe headaches

•

Sleep problems

•

Worsened near-sightedness

Some Tips to Keep Your Eyes Healthy!

The good news is you can actually avert many of these problems almost completely with a few very easy and doable measures. Some of these are: • Taking frequent breaks from the screen.

• The brightness of the screen should match the brightness of the surroundings.

• Focus on something that is a minimum of 6 meters away and look at it at least every 20 minutes.

• Go for regular eye check-ups.

• Keep the position of your laptop/computer screen away from windows.

• Zoom in, increase font size and turning text into bold helps to reduce eye strain.

• Computer screens should be 2 feet away from your eyes and 4-6 inches below your eye.

• Blinking and rolling your eyes are the best exercises that help our eye muscles.

• We should always get 8-9 hours of sleep every night.

• Always have a healthy diet. That includes vegetables, seeds, nuts, egg yolks, fish, cheese, milk, butter (anything with vitamin A), and most importantly, drink lots of water.

• Splashing your eyes with cold water is always recommended.

• Use an air humidifier to increase humidity in the room as air-conditioners make the air dry.

• Always work on your devices with the lights on.

During these holidays and beyond, take care of your eyes, and ensure that those windows stay in sparkling condition!

Recipe for Guacamole Dip /

Ingredients • Avocado - 1 (Smash with a fork) • Tomato (Medium) - 1 (deseeded and finely chopped) • Onion (Medium) - 1 (finely chopped) • Lemon juice - 1 • Finely chopped coriander leaves - 2 tbsp.

• Green chilli - 1 (Optional) • Salt to taste • Sugar - A pinch • Crushed black pepper - 1/2 tsp

Method In a bowl, mix all the ingredients together and serve the dip chilled.

(I like to serve it in individual portions with breadsticks, but my son loves to eat the guacamole dip alone).

Recipe for Blackberry Fools

Ingredients • Blackberries - 200 grams (keep a few pieces for garnish) • Brown sugar - 1/4 cup • Whipped cream - 500 mg • Powdered sugar - 1/4 cup

Method 1. In a bowl, mix together the blackberries and brown sugar. Keep aside for 1 hour.

2. In a blender, mix the whipped cream and powdered sugar till it is thick and creamy.

3. Mash the sugar-coated blackberries with a fork.

4. Fold the blackberries with the whipped cream mix slowly (maybe for 1 minute).

5. Serve the blackberries desert chilled in a nice dessert bowl.

6. Blackberries can be replaced with raspberries.

7. Whipped cream can be replaced with Greek yogurt.

8. *Do not use the blender if you are using Greek yogurt).

Recipe for Makhmali Paneer Gravy

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Fresh cottage cheese - 500 grams (cubes) Cashew nut - 6-8 pieces Large Tomato - 1 (finely chopped) Large Onion -1 (finely chopped) Ginger - garlic paste - 1 tbsp (each).

Bay leaf - 1 Cumin seeds - 1 tsp.

Oil - 1 tsp Whole clove - 3-4 Green Cardamom - 3-4 Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp Salt to taste Sugar (a pinch) Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp Dry fenugreek leaves (Kasuri methi)- 1/2 tsp.

• Ghee - 1/3 tsp • Finely chopped coriander leaves- 1 tbsp • Fresh cream - 1 tbsp

Method 1. In a wok, add oil, whole cloves and green cardamom. When it starts to crackle, add the finely chopped onion and ginger-garlic paste and cook the ingredients together until translucent.

2. Then add finely chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt, and cashew nuts, and cook till the tomatoes are soft.

3. Cool it down and then make a smooth paste (add a little water if required).

4. In another wok, add ghee, bay leaf, and cumin seeds. Let it crackle.

5. Add the smooth paste, red chilli powder, coriander powder, and cook very well.

6. Add cottage cheese cubes, a pinch of sugar, and remember to check for salt.

7. Lastly, add kasuri methi, coriander leaves and fresh cream.

Recipe for Pahari Aloo

Ingredients • Big potatoes - 2 (boiled and cut into wedges) • Dry mango powder (Amchoor powder) • Cumin Seeds- 1 tsp • Oil - 1 tbsp • Asafoetida (Hing) - 1/4 tsp (available at any supermarket) • Turmeric powder- 1/3 tsp • Red chilli powder- 1/3 tsp • Coriander powder - 1/3 tsp • Cumin powder- 1/3 tsp • Whole dry red chilli - 1 • Salt to taste • Finely chopped coriander leaves- 1 tbsp.

Method 1. In a hot wok, add oil, asafoetida, cumin seeds and a whole dry red chilli. Wait till it crackles.

2. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and stir.

3. Then add boiled potato wedges and, in high heat, stir it carefully. Add salt to taste and dry mango powder and mix well.

4. Lastly, add finely chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with parathas.
