Over the past two years, our families and friends across the globe have faced enormous hardships. This year, we join together with hope, gratitude, and enthusiasm to celebrate The Winter Show’s sixty-eighth anniversary.

As the nation’s longest-running art, antiques, and design fair, The Winter Show sets the standard for quality and connoisseurship within this highly competitive marketplace.

Our commitment to quality remains unyielding as we adapt to the shifting demographics and tastes of the art market.

This year’s Show features some of the world’s leading fine and decorative arts specialists, as well as a wide range of new exhibitors, disciplines, and price points.

The Winter Show is the principal fundraising effort for East Side House Settlement, a non-profit, community-based organization that provides quality education, job training, and assistance services to individuals in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan.

Throughout the pandemic, East Side House has remained on the front lines addressing the most pressing needs of the communities and families it serves. In addition to establishing a full-scale food bank that serves 5,000 people each week, the organization launched a home-delivered meal program that reaches 900 seniors every day. Beyond these relief efforts,

East Side House has continued to provide essential services to New York City’s youths, ensuring that each young individual has the opportunity to graduate from high school, pursue a career, and achieve economic security.

The Winter Show is the only major fair in the United States that dedicates all proceeds to its beneficiary. Every contribution directly benefits our most vulnerable communities, helping more than 14,000 people each year break the cycle of poverty. We are so grateful for your support!

We dedicate the 2022 Show to the hundreds of exceptional individuals who have committed their time, energy, and enthusiasm to ensure that we fulfill our promises to the community. Our team members, interns, volunteers, and students are the very heart of East Side House and The Winter Show.

Thank you for joining us for the 68th anniversary of The Winter Show, America’s longest-running art, antiques, and design fair.

Since 1954, The Winter Show has cultivated and inspired generations of collectors, art and design enthusiasts, and antique hunters alike. The 2022 Show is grateful for the support of Bank of America, whose longtime commitment to our beneficiary, East Side House Settlement, and passion for the arts make this partnership even more meaningful.

This year, 60 world-renowned experts present a diverse selection of fine art, decorative objects, and jewelry that spans almost 5,000 years. You may recognize many exhibitors who have participated in the Show for decades, but you will also discover many new dealers. All of our participants proudly uphold the tradition of excellence expected of The Winter Show.

Following the success of last year’s Online Edition, and the postponement of our January Show at the historic Park Avenue Armory, we are thrilled to collaborate with American Brands Group to present the 68th edition of the Fair in another iconic New York building – 660 Madison Avenue. Beyond the Show’s international scope and dynamic selection of fine and decorative objects, we hope you enjoy our new hybrid programs and panel discussions both in-person and online.

This year’s Show honors major milestones of two of our dear partners, The Magazine Antiques and the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM). As part of its centennial celebration, Antiques showcases its most iconic issues in a curated exhibition. Additionally, we are collaborating with AFAM on various programs and events throughout the year as the institution commemorates its 60th anniversary.

neighborhoods throughout the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. As Executive Director of the Show, I am honored to work alongside their dedicated team.

In 1961, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy appointed H. F. du Pont to lead her project to restore the White House interiors. The redesign became a history lesson for the country and awakened an interest in preservation and interior design that is still felt today. For the first time, the story of this historic partnership will be told at Winterthur, the inspiration for Mrs. Kennedy’s project. Opens May 7, 2022.

On behalf of East Side House Settlement, I am delighted to welcome you all to our 68th edition of The Winter Show! We appreciate your patience with us as we postponed the event to ensure that we could all gather again safely. We’re so glad to have you back.

I am deeply grateful to our Board of Managers and generous supporters from across the nation for their tireless commitment to our organization this past year. As many businesses and non-profits were forced to close their doors, East Side House continued to provide programs and opportunities to individuals and families in need throughout the pandemic. We would not have been able to serve and advocate for our communities during these difficult times without your commitment to our mission.

Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge and thank our staff, who have remained on the front lines throughout the pandemic and ensured that our community members receive the best possible care.

As part of our pandemic relief efforts, we have expanded our food assistance services. Last year, we launched a full-scale food pantry program that reached 5,000 each week, in addition to a daily home delivery meal program for nearly 900 older adults.

East Side House Settlement and The Winter Show are delighted to welcome acclaimed architects Mark Ferguson and Andrew Oyen, and award-winning interior designer Corey Damen Jenkins as this year’s Design Co-Chairs.

Mark Ferguson Mark Ferguson is a founding partner of Ferguson & Shamamian Architects and Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at Catholic University. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University and his Master of Architecture from Princeton University. Following his apprenticeships in Pittsburgh, Boston, and Princeton, he and his wife, architect Natalie Jacobs, moved to New York. Mark’s early renovations on houses in Croton-on-Hudson and Tuxedo Park exposed him to traditional architecture at a time when modernism was omnipresent. His knowledge of classical forms led him to the renowned interior decoration firm Parish-Hadley, where he collaborated with interior decorators and artisans to create residences rooted in traditional design principles. Mark and Oscar Shamamian worked together at Parish-Hadley and, in 1988, joined forces to establish Ferguson & Shamamian Architects.

Mark has served on the Board of Directors of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art since 1992 and as its Chairman from 2014 to 2016. Additionally, he and Natalie established the Ferguson Jacobs Prize in Architecture at their alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University. Since its founding, his firm has received several prestigious awards, and its completed projects have appeared in many publications. Mark has contributed to numerous books, including the firm’s monograph Ferguson & Shamamian Architects: City and Country Residences (2011) and its latest book, Collaborations: Architecture Interiors Landscapes (Rizzoli), published in October 2021. Mark and Natalie live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and spend weekends in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

Nationally acclaimed designer Corey Damen Jenkins is an inducted member of Architectural Digest’s AD100 and, in 2020, was named to ELLE Decor’s prestigious A-List.

His bold interiors have graced the front covers of top publications, including House Beautiful and Traditional Home, and were featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Detroit News, and Vanity Fair. His first coffee table book, Design Remix: A New Spin On Traditional Rooms (Rizzoli), was released worldwide in March 2021.

Andrew Oyen’s passion for aesthetics and how people live is rooted in his family’s background in decorative arts. He began his career as an architect in an interior design firm before joining Ferguson & Shamamian Architects in 1996.

As a result of his early experiences, he skillfully balances the two disciplines in every project he approaches, from the first meeting with a client and helping them envision their home to the actual implementation of their plans, finishes, and details.

Corey has appeared in numerous broadcasts. He was a guest design expert on The Rachael Ray Show and Open HouseTV and won as a contestant on HGTV’s competition series Showhouse Showdown in 2012. He debuted as a MasterClass instructor in August 2021 with a course on interior design.

Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture with a concentration on Architectural History and Urbanism from the University of Virginia. He also studied Architecture, Preservation, and Conservation at The Bartlett School, part of the University of London. His completed projects include some of New York’s most iconic buildings, and he has designed residences in Long Island, Connecticut, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Malibu, among others.

Corey’s numerous industry honors include the New York School of Interior Design’s Larry Kravet Design Industry Leadership Award, Traditional Home’s New Trad Rising Star of Design Award, Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars Award for Interior Design, and the D&D Building’s Stars On The Rise Award. He designed the formal “Ladies Library” at the renowned Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York in 2019, as well as the dining room at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas in 2021.

Corey resides in New York City and is a tireless advocate for many charities.

A Salute to The Magazine Antiques at 100— An esteemed arts publication reaches the century mark!

The Magazine Antiques was founded in 1922—well before the New Yorker, Time magazine, Newsweek, and many other eminent publications ever landed in readers’ hands. Now one hundred years old, Antiques has outlasted such legendary magazines as the Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, The American Mercury, Life, Look, and Scribner’s.

Both in print and online, Antiques remains a keystone of the trade and a beloved source of information and enjoyment for collectors and art lovers everywhere.

Throughout its century-long history, Antiques has sought to be a trusted and authoritative resource for museum curators and other scholars of the fine and decorative arts. Over the decades, the magazine has been a platform for new discoveries and fresh research and, on the odd occasion, an arena for lively academic debate. Today, many scholars keep the entire back catalogue of Antiques on hand for reference—as do a surprising number of casual readers.

Beyond helping to build and nurture the art and antiques trade, Antiques has been instrumental in fostering a broader interest in historical art and design. The magazine and the antiques market have grown up side by side, and continue to thrive in harmony.

Advertisements that have appeared in the magazine are themselves valuable documents, and have been used by scholars, gallerists, and dealers alike to trace the pedigree and provenance of innumerable paintings, pieces of furniture, silver services, ceramic wares, and more. For many dealers, a first-time advertisement in Antiques is about pride as much as sales— a mark that they are ready to take their place in the upper echelon of the trade.

Editor Gregory Cerio and Antiques bravely offer us quirky, off-the-beaten-track, personal approaches to the arts and life, and to things of high quality everywhere.

There may not be a single issue of The Magazine Antiques that I have not read, enjoyed, and learned from over the last fifty years—half of the magazine’s existence.

A visually stunning magazine, Antiques has long been recognized as the gold standard of popular scholarly publications for its concise, accurate, stimulating, and evocative presentation of content. Many books have come and gone from my library over the years, yet copies of Antiques have remained on my shelves for decades, simply because they are too valuable to discard.

The dozen or so articles that I have written for the magazine have covered a wide range of topics, from Queen Victoria’s collection of hair jewelry to the trade medals given by explorers to indigenous peoples around the world. I have discussed historical figures from different eras, from George Washington to Beatrix Potter, and described collectionfilled institutions, from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia to the Explorers Club in New York. I have written about decorative arts and fine arts and several subjects that fall somewhere in between. I can think of no other magazine that would have encouraged such an eclectic assemblage of topics—or given them such a spectacular showcase.

The editorial guidance, thoughtfully and sensitively provided by Wendell Garrett, Alfred Mayor, Allison Eckardt Ledes, Eleanor Gustafson, Gregory Cerio, and their colleagues over the years, has greatly improved everything I have ever submitted.

I congratulate The Magazine Antiques on its hundredth birthday and wish it all the best as it embarks on a second century of engaging, instructive, and insightful scholarship.

As a boy, I would run to our mailbox in heart-pounding anticipation for the arrival of the latest issue. As a reader, I felt welcomed by a familiar sequence of ads for Israel Sack, David Stockwell, The Old Print Shop, and John Walton at the front, with John Bell of Aberdeen, Herbert Schiffer, and Shreve, Crump & Low anchoring the back. I joyfully dove into its pages, absorbing a galaxy of illustrations throughout and fascinating articles.

professional milestone in 1990 when Antiques’s editor Allison Eckardt Ledes afforded me the honor of writing the first of a series of articles published by the magazine.

Here’s to a century’s worth of The Magazine Antiques! I grew up with copies of the magazine strewn around the house, each with important articles and eye-catching advertisements that provoked ‘if only” thoughts. Antiques has taken on many roles in my family over the years, including assisting in my dad’s recovery. He was hospitalized in 1934 after getting into a bad automobile accident while searching for a Christmas tree. One day, someone brought him a copy of Antiques to pass the time.

Although he was about 150 issues behind, he soon caught up and continued to read new issues until the age of ninety-five!

A Salute to The Magazine Antiques I imagine I was one of few college seniors in the spring of 1982 who, in addition to graduation, eagerly anticipated the arrival of the April issue of The Magazine Antiques.

I discovered the magazine the previous summer while interning at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine. There, I shadowed Martha Gandy (M’Lou) Fales as she researched the nineteenthcentury portraitist, still-life painter, and Kennebunkport native Hannah Brown Skeele. A regular contributor to Antiques, M’Lou received her master’s degree in Early American Culture from the Winterthur Program in 1954 (not only was she part of Winterthur’s first class of fellows, but also met her future husband, Dean Fales, a fellow scholar of American fine and decorative arts, through the program). By the end of the summer, M’Lou had identified a core group of thirty to forty paintings by Skeele and assembled a chronology of the artist’s career.

M’Lou’s resulting article in Antiques remains, to my knowledge, the only substantial piece of writing on Skeele. As an artist relatively well known in her lifetime, Skeele’s meticulous depictions of people and objects —such as an Italian Greyhound in one notable painting from the Brick Store Museum’s collection—were so accomplished that they invited comparison with the work of members of the Peale family. Recently, I returned to the article after coming across one of Skeele’s paintings listed for sale by a private gallery. When I told gallery about this important source of information, they passed it along to the purchaser, a major museum.

Even though the gallery had not discovered article in its own research, others have. Shana Klein, an assistant professor at Kent State University, enlisted M’Lou’s research in an article recently published in the online journal of American art, Panorama. Klein cites M’Lou’s article in Antiques as her main source for Skeele’s biography as she analyzes still-life painting in relation to American imperialism—an argument that would have been completely foreign in 1982.

I suspect that Skeele is one of many women artists, queer artists, artists of color, or artists working outside of metropolitan areas who have been documented most extensively—or even exclusively—in The Magazine Antiques.

The magazine’s archive therefore takes on even greater significance as scholars expand upon the canon of artists they write and teach about, and as the works of artists marginalized during their lifetimes become increasingly popular among collectors.

Antiques remains, as far as I am concerned, a unique venue for the publication of original and substantial research on artists, works of art and architecture, and locales that otherwise might remain obscure. I hope that new generations of college students will discover in the archive of deeply-researched and carefully-edited articles from The Magazine Antiques a trove of cultural objects which they will think about in ways we can scarcely imagine.

A Salute to The Magazine Antiques

I was not raised with antiques—or even magazines about antiques. My Depressionera parents had an aversion to anything that smacked of the secondhand, and they threw away whatever possessions grew old or tarnished in favor of something shiny and new. I think they were puzzled by their thrift-shopping, vintage-clothes-wearing, Victoriana-collecting, art-loving daughter who was always on the lookout for a career that would match her proclivities. That career started to take shape when I enrolled in the American Folk Art Studies graduate program at New York University. Conceived by Robert Bishop, then director of the American Folk Art Museum, this small yet rather brave program quickly introduced me to the Museum’s library.

Years-worth of issues of The Magazine Antiques occupied quite a length of shelf space in a quiet corner of the library that I claimed as my own.

Antiques was born in the flush of the colonial revival. In the magazine’s earliest incarnation, its pages revealed a reverence for china, silver, ancestor portraits, and Pilgrim and brown furniture—an unfamiliar world in which my Lower East Side soul was not the least comfortable. However, Antiques granted me entrée into that world where I could read, dream, and learn in private. As a graduate student, my papers centered on topics and artists that I would pursue throughout my career (and eventually write about in the magazine).

One of my first papers considered the Boston fishing lady needleworks, which prompted my first research foray into Antiques—to encounter the marvelous articles by Nancy Graves Cabot. I was hooked. Thereafter, I spent hours and hours leafing through the pages of issues that marched through time.

I have always returned to Antiques as my first port of call for any research project. As I became more familiar with the Museum’s collection, I fell under the thrall of the “Phrenological Head” attributed to Asa Ames (1827–1851). The sculpted bust was first exhibited at the Newark Museum in 1931, a point in time when modernism met folk art met the colonial revival, but, of course, the one and only article published on the artist to date appeared in The Magazine Antiques in 1982.

As time goes on, topics covered by the magazine have cast a wider net while always remaining relevant, scholarly, and inviting so that even the most uninitiated become enmeshed in its sheer beauty and ideas. The Magazine Antiques is now itself an antique, and its tenor has necessarily changed and grown as it responds to new leadership, times, and interests. What has never changed, though, is the intellectual delight in art, objects, and their histories—the passion in knowledge for its own sake, and the pure joy in sharing it with others.

The Magazine Antiques has been a central part of my life since my early teen years.

Since then, I have worn various successive hats as a student, museum curator, dealer, and collector as I eagerly await the arrival of each issue.

Cumulatively, the amount of information contained in nearly 100 years of publication is overwhelming. There is almost no subject of research in the field of American art that would not benefit from reviewing the scholarship published in Antiques. As an author, I have always been pleased with the excellent editing and artistic presentation of the various articles I have submitted.

Antiques is a resource for everybody; a stimulating and inviting venerable publishing presence with a terrific range of articles and features in every issue by those who know and who also know how to write.

As a curator who labors in the vineyard of American painting and has had the privilege of writing several articles, Antiques has also kept me abreast of everything else: sculpture, the decorative arts, architecture, textiles, prints, jewelry, and so on.

Importantly, Antiques pays close attention to private collectors and the practices of collecting, in addition to the collections they assemble and their modes of display.

Between the front and back covers of each issue is a robust survey of the current marketplace; much of it ‘American’ but hardly all. This is an education (and a visual delight) in and of itself.

The sheer breadth of the magazine’s range of inquiry over the past century has been extraordinary; exploring “up and down” the hierarchies of connoisseurship and scholarship from indigenous, folk, and artisanal to popular culture; from high art to material culture and artifacts as well as a geographic range that can reach well beyond continental borders. In the expanding global community of today, such ambition suggests that Antiques is well-positioned for its second century.

A Salute to The Magazine Antiques

Since its first issue was published in January 1922, Antiques has remained a key source of information about early Americana, broadly conceived. Moreover, as was noted in a printing trade journal in 1922, Antiques not only published good content, but did so elegantly: “typographically the magazine is a gem.”

Appropriately published initially in Boston, the magazine flourished under the leadership of distinguished editors and staff, beginning with Homer Eaton Keyes, and including Alice Winchester and the inestimable Wendell D. Garrett. For more than a thousand issues, Antiques has consistently brought new research and fresh topics to the attention of its readers. It has fostered healthy scholarly debate, as with the legendary battle between Fiske Kimball and Mabel Munson Swan over the attribution of Samuel McIntire furniture in the 1930s, and has helped expand the temporal and spatial boundaries of the antiques world writ large. Even the magazine’s many advertisements have become a valuable archive over time, helping to chart the unceasing flow of objects through the marketplace. With its rich blend of well-edited, authoritative texts accompanied by colorful images, Antiques has been a fixture for a century, evolving with the field and helping to shape the trajectory of its evolution, as it no doubt will in the challenging years and decades ahead.

The Magazine Antiques was the first magazine to which I ever had a subscription.

No Seventeen for me. When Charles Montgomery left his position as director of Winterthur to teach at Yale, I took the opportunity to enroll in one of his courses, known among students as “pots and pans.”

The class seemed like an excellent opportunity to learn more about historic houses, which had interested me since the age of nine when I visited Portsmouth and Exeter, New Hampshire, and Concord, Massachusetts.

Montgomery eventually became my thesis advisor and mentor. Our class studied and rearranged the great furniture at Yale according to the different periods we had learned, and were given a private tour of Winterthur.

My parents evidently understood that antiques had become my passion after I bought an eighteenth-century Windsor chair with the cash my grandfather gifted me for my birthday. My Christmas present from them was not a usual nineteen-year-old’s gift but it was perfect—my first issue of a subscription to Antiques. Every month I would rush to open the latest issue and usually read most of it in one sitting. My subscription to Antiques coincided with my own early research, several more courses with Montgomery and others, and my introduction into the museum world.

I have kept every issue of Antiques and frequently go back to find articles, often

looking for one thing and ending up reading the articles on either side—like going into the stacks of a library. I am glad I still have them.

I hope full digitization will allow everyone to share in the century-long history of Antiques (before and after my subscription began).

Nevertheless, I still enjoy the feeling of seeing my first issues, with their elegant photos and research that led to further discoveries in later issues, and the romance of the lives of collectors featured in the “Living with Antiques” series.

Congratulations to The Magazine Antiques on its first one hundred years, and best wishes for inspiring and captivating more generations in the next hundred.

American Folk Art Museum Celebrates 60 Years of Groundbreaking Exhibitions

Several years ago, the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM) digitized the archive of its magazine, The Clarion (later called Folk Art) thanks to the support of Karin and Dr. Jonathan Fielding and the American Folk Art Society. When I was first appointed Director and CEO of the Museum, I committed to reading a new issue each week.

These fun, illuminating, and inspiring weekly reads shaped my understanding of the organization’s history and primed me for the occasion of the Museum’s sixtieth anniversary.

Upon reading through the magazine, many themes emerge and remain constant. As the leading forum for modern and contemporary self-taught and historical folk art, AFAM has always organized exhibitions that celebrate quintessential artists, produce thought-provoking scholarship, and showcase works under unique and previously untapped themes.

A museum’s exhibition history can shed new light on evolving tastes and shifting collecting habits. In hindsight, we often find that our forebears knew, long before others, that some artists would gain more importance over time. American sculptor William Edmondson (1874–1951) is one such artist.

Folk Carvings by Will Edmondson (1965) was the first monographic exhibition organized by the Museum. Born to formerly enslaved parents on the Compton Plantation near Nashville, Tennessee, Edmondson lost his hospital job at the onset of the Great Depression and became a religious convert after experiencing a heavenly vision in the early 1930s. As he poetically testified: “I looked up in the sky, and right there in the noon daylight, He hung a tombstone out for me to make.

God give me this thing.”

A devout member of the United Primitive Baptist Church, Edmondson promptly complied with this divine directive. Soon, he filled his backyard with limestone tombstones and garden sculptures. His earliest commissioned works depicted biblical characters, angels, animals, community leaders, and heroes—subjects informed by the imagery in Nashville’s African American cemeteries. Edmondson regularly referred to these works as his “miracles.”

The exhibition featured seven limestone sculptures, including Lady with the Good Book (loaned from one of AFAM’s founders, Adele Earnest), The Bride (loaned from famed photographer Louise-Dahl Wolfe), and The Preacher (loaned from collector Fritz Krieger). Since Edmondson worked as a stone carver in the gravestone tradition, Folk Carvings also served as a bridge between two other shows on view at the Museum that year: Rubbings from New England Gravestones and Signs of a Living Folk Art. Edmondson has continued to be a focus of the Museum following the rediscovery of his Martha and Mary. The sculpture, a recently announced gift from artist and Museum Trustee Brian Donnelly (a.k.a. KAWS), will play a starring role in Multitudes, our sixtieth-anniversary exhibition.

In the 1970s, the Museum continued to organize transformative and, let’s say, transgressive exhibitions, beginning with Twentieth-Century Folk Art and Artists (1970). The exhibition was organized by Herbert Waide Hemphill Jr., then the Museum’s curator, and led to the publication of Twentieth-Century Folk Art and Artists by Hemphill and Julia Weissman. Both the exhibition and book had lasting impacts on the Museum and the field. Moreover, they likely influenced the thinking and work of a generation of young curators and art historians, many of

whom would devote much of their own research to twentiethcentury American folk art. In a retrospective look at the show, The Clarion noted: “It [the exhibition] also marked a turning point. Prior to it, Hemphill’s collecting habits had been focused on the nineteenth century, yet spurred by research for the book, Hemphill’s passion turned to objects of the twentieth century.”

When the Museum’s exhibition Tattoo (1971) opened the following year, it was still illegal to operate a parlor in New York City. Sanka Knox, reporting for The New York Times, described the show as follows: “TATTOO!” is blazoned in large letters on the street parlor window, apprising the public of the museum’s newest exhibition, a divertissement that explores the American way with the art in its 19th-century heyday and its practitioners. Perhaps the first to see the show, even if sketchily, were two policemen patrolling the street, whose attention was riveted by “TATTOO!” a trek up the stairs, with a warrant at the ready, revealed not a tattooing parlor, but a lot of busy people trying to create a facsimile of one and otherwise engaged in lawful activities.”

Later that decade, American Pop artist Andy Warhol (1928–1987) joined the Museum’s board. An avid collector of folk art, Warhol collaborated with AFAM on the exhibition Folk and Funk (1977).

ArtForum reported at the time: “The truth is that Warhol’s collection, paradoxically, is totally free of pretension. It reveals not a trendy or bourgeois baiting sensibility but rather a sound, nostalgic, deeply conservative one. There is nothing shocking or outré here, although even a casual student knows that much in American folk art is both shocking and outré. This collection would be of artistic interest if it were not Andy Warhol’s.”

By the 1980s, AFAM was well on its way to fulfilling the mission it had chartered in 1961 with new exhibitions of enormous scholarly and popular appeal. In 1981, the Museum and New York University established one of the nation’s first programs in folk art studies.

The fifty-six credit program offered a selection of courses designed to broaden not only students’ understanding of folk art, but also the context in which it was created. Several current and former staff members, including Elizabeth V. Warren, Stacy C. Hollander, Ann-Marie Reilly, and Lee Kogan, graduated from this program and subsequently produced fascinating exhibitions at the Museum.

Around the same time, the Museum introduced new approaches to audience engagement. Alongside the exhibition Small Folk: A Celebration of Childhood in America, which offered a comprehensive view of the lives of children in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through art of the period, the Museum organized a child-friendly booklet as well as tours for hundreds of children. The Museum also held a symposium exploring changing perceptions of childhood in literature, art, and human development.

Likewise, the Museum arranged traveling exhibitions as part of its mission to be a beacon for American folk art. Small Folk was an early example of the Museum’s commitment to this endeavor. After a stop at The New-York Historical Society, the exhibition traveled to the 77

First Street Forum in St. Louis, Missouri. Then, in the summer of 1981, it traveled to The Shiseido Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. As part of AFAM’s “Arts and Embassies” program, works from the Museum’s collection were exhibited in Italy and Ecuador.

Since the 1990s, the Museum has organized exhibitions that have traveled to hundreds of museums across the country and around the world. Continuing this trend through 2022, we have launched a traveling tour of self-originated exhibitions drawn from the Museum’s collection. Four varied exhibitions will be on view at museums in Florida, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Washington, Indiana, Kansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maine, and Mississippi until June 2024.

The Museum has also increased its efforts in the last two decades to produce exceptional exhibitions showcasing individual artists such as Martin Ramírez, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Henry Darger, and Ammi Phillips.

Considered one of the foremost self-taught artists of the twentieth century, Ramírez (1895–1963) produced hundreds of drawings and collages of exceptional visual clarity and expressive power while being confined to DeWitt State Hospital (located in Auburn, California) for the last fifteen years of his life. The Museum’s 2007 retrospective, titled after the artist, displayed nearly one hundred of these works.

The exhibition produced an astonishing development: a group of previously unknown works by Ramírez. The descendants of Dr. Max Dunievitz, who treated the artist at DeWitt State Hospital, brought more than 120 drawings to AFAM Curator Brooke Davis Anderson’s attention. This was a remarkable find given that Ramírez’s known body of work had not exceeded about 300 drawings and collages up to that time.

Besides securing supplies for the artist, Dr. Dunievitz collected his final drawings made between 1960 and 1963. A museum would not normally produce two shows within two years, but due to this extraordinary discovery, AFAM unveiled Martin Ramirez: The Last Works in 2008.

Tools of Her Ministry: The Art of Sister Gertrude Morgan (2004) was the first monograph on this important self-taught African American artist. After a voice from God instructed her to become a street evangelist, Sister Morgan left her family and husband to move to New Orleans, where she and two other missionaries established an orphanage. Her paintings served as visual aids for her new vocation as a selfproclaimed medium for the divine message.

The Seduction of Light: Ammi Phillips | Mark Rothko Compositions in Pink, Green, and Red (2008–2009) illuminated previously unseen connections between two American artists who lived and worked over one hundred years apart. In addition to large-scale canvases from Rothko’s classic period of the 1950s and 1960s, the exhibition featured some of Phillips’ most outstanding works from 1815 through the 1830s.

In Dargerism: Contemporary Artists and Henry Darger (2008), the works of eleven artists explored the aesthetic beauty of the writer’s mythic oeuvre—with its tales of good versus evil, epic scope and complexity, and transgressive undertones—as well as his unfailing work ethic and tireless devotion to artmaking.

In 2011, the Museum dramatically transformed the Park Avenue Armory’s historic 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall with an installation of 650 red and white American quilts loaned from the collection of Joanna S. Rose. A virtuosic testament to American folk art, Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts was a cultural phenomenon attended by droves of people and the largest quilt exhibition ever held in New York.

In recent years, our exhibitions have explored previously understudied topics and themes. Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art (2019), curated by Elizabeth V. Warren, featured approximately one hundred works that told the story of New York City as America’s financial and commercial epicenter. The exhibition showcased two perspectives simultaneously: “The Art of Business” examined the people and places associated with New York’s thriving commercial life, while “The Business of Art” highlighted diverse formats and media used by the city’s artists, artisans, and manufacturers.

American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds (2021-2022) drew on important private and public collections across the United States and encompassed a diverse range of forms made between the 1780s and 1914. At the height of their enormous commercial popularity, American weathervanes were produced in and around major cities such as New York and Boston. In New York, one of the biggest makers was J.L. Mott, for whom the Mott Haven section of the Bronx is named. As their commercial interest waned, these practical yet manifestly artistic forms caught the discerning eyes of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and Edith Gregor Halpert, as well as artists such as Elie Nadelman and Yasuo Kuniyoshi.

Weathervanes, a much loved but underappreciated form of public art, design, and sculpture, played an important role in the first years of the Museum’s collection. It was therefore fitting that the opening of American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds on June 23, 2021 coincided with the Museum’s sixtieth anniversary. The exhibition was both a scholarly achievement as well as a celebration of folk artistry, with highlights that included a magnificent eighteenth-century rooster from Portland, Maine; an eagle and shield possibly made in the foundry of revolutionary patriot Paul Revere; a graceful representation of the Greek goddess Fame playing a trumpet and standing on point like a celestial ballerina (attributed to E.G. Washburne & Co. in New York City); a fearsome dragon climbing a pole; and an enormous monoplane modeled after the first aircraft to fly over the English Channel.

Now, as we embark on our sixth decade, our commitment to organizing great exhibitions has never been stronger. This month, we opened Multitudes. Organized by Valérie Rousseau, Curatorial Chair for Exhibitions, and Emelie Gevalt, Curatorial Chair for Collections, for the occasion of the Museum’s sixtieth anniversary, the exhibition encompasses a variety of artworks—from dazzling early American portraits, needlework, and quilts to idiosyncratic creations from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, such as sculptures made of recycled materials, color-tinted photographs, and fragments of art environments. Pieces from AFAM’s collection are shown alongside new acquisitions displayed for the first time, including works by William Edmondson, Ammi Phillips, Helen Rae, Judith Scott, James Edward Deeds, and Yuichiro Ukai.

A landmark exhibition, Multitudes advances both the Museum’s long-standing tradition of groundbreaking shows and our position as the leading forum for understanding and appreciating folk and selftaught art across time and place.

THE COMMODORE An Art Deco masterpiece by Isotta Fraschini, with the body by Carrozzeria Castagna The Commodore was so named because this model was first shown at the prestigious Hotel Commodore in New York in 1930. This car and nine others were ordered from Milan and the nickname “Commodore” was born. This roadster, equipped with the “Super Sprint” package, possessed power, speed and refined engineering and was coupled with the astonishing luxury coachwork by Castagna.

Until Southward (Sørover), d.1903, surfaced in 2021 in a New England private collection, grainy black-and-white photos were the only evidence of this rare Art Nouveau tapestry by famed Norwegian artist Frida Hansen (1855–1931).

Woven with wool and silver thread, it was purchased directly from Hansen by Berte Aske Bergh, a New York socialite and weaving instructor.

The tapestry was widely exhibited until 1931 at venues including the Waldorf Astoria, the Smithsonian, the Brooklyn Museum and the Toledo Museum of Art. Frida Hansen was an internationally recognized Art Nouveau artist. The rediscovered Southward tapestry, based on Norse mythology, was woven

by Hansen three years after she won a gold medal for artistic merit at the 1900 Paris World Exposition.

Hansen’s work hangs in Norway’s National Museum in Oslo and other European museums.

The Stavanger Kunstmuseum mounted an important retrospective of her work in 2015.

Since the early days of the pandemic, East Side House has seen it as an honor to step up and be there for its community.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announces shut down of all New York City public schools.

East Side House conducts a needs assessment of thousands of participants, family members, and community residents.

Results from these surveys indicated two dire needs: the need for food and the need for technology so students could continue to learn.

The pandemic has presented challenge after challenge, exacerbating the needs of low-income New Yorkers, especially those in the South Bronx.

At each turn, East Side House was there.

All students in East Side House’s Head Start/Early Head Start programs were provided with tablets and home learning kits so they could resume learning from home. Virtual classes began on March 23rd to minimize the time for learning loss.

East Side House purchased over 700 tablets and hot spots and distributed them directly to families throughout the Bronx and Northern Manhattan, communities where only about 30% have mobile or broadband access.

After learning of the dire need for food, East Side House supporters rallied to secure crops and food that otherwise would be destroyed due to the sudden shut down of schools, stadiums, restaurants, and events.

On this day, 43,000 pounds of Cranney Farms potatoes were loaded onto a truck and driven by an Army veteran from Idaho on a truck donated by SOAR Transportation to the South Bronx.

43,000 pounds of potatoes arrived in the South Bronx. Partner Mike Zaro lent his bakery to help East Side House staff and volunteers unload, unbox, and repack potatoes.

Despite the pandemic, East Side House staff came out to roll up their sleeves and serve. In about 12 hours, staff packed over 1300 bags of potatoes. These bags were then transported to a vacant building, generously donated

by RxR Realty. There, staff boxed the potatoes with other crops and shelf-stable items such as oatmeal, condensed milk, pasta, red sauce, etc.

East Side House executed its first public distribution of pantry boxes from 4 high-need public housing complexes in the South Bronx. That day, we distributed 1200 boxes, feeding 4,800 people.

Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, eager to support efforts that relieve hunger and reduce food waste, provides East Side House with sponsorship to help rescue 1 million pounds of food and feed 275,000 people by March 2021. East Side House exceeded that goal.

East Side House continues to feed over 5,000 people per week.

Hellmann’s Mayonnaise connects East Side House with The Federation of Southern Cooperatives, a network of Black farmers. These farmers have partnered with East Side House to provide 200,000 pounds of crops to East Side House. This initiative helps support small Black-owned businesses while feeding communities in need.

East Side House is elected by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development to provide Learning Labs. Learning Labs are centers where children of essential workers— and students who otherwise couldn’t be home—were able to get in-person support accessing their remote classroom, as well as in-person tutoring, enrichment activities, and food. East Side House helped over 235 families manage the pandemic and keep students on track to succeed in school.

As East Side House’s hunger relief work grew, they needed more space. East Side House moved into a 16,000 square foot warehouse in the South Bronx. This Harvest to Haven warehouse became the home of all East Side House’s food services.

From this center, East Side House continues to feed nearly 6,000 people per week. At the ribbon-cutting event, East Side House was joined by some of its biggest supporters, Nauman Barakat and Bill Mehleisen.

East Side House provided homedelivered meals to 900 homebound older adults throughout the Bronx for the first time. East Side House was awarded a $6.8 million contract to make sure our oldest neighbors are kept fed and healthy. Meals are delivered by the friendly faces of East Side House staff and young people.

This work will continue through 2023.

East Side House was on the frontlines getting members of our community vaccinated and protected against the COVID-19 vaccine.

East Side House partnered with NYC Health + Hospitals to host vaccination events for our older adults, helping over 800 people get vaccinated.

East Side House also partnered with Morris Heights Health Center and the Bronx Rising Initiative to bring vaccines to homebound older adults.

East Side House operated 4 Summer Rising programs serving 295 students.

These programs were designed, in partnership with NYC public schools, to help students in low-income areas combat learning loss experienced throughout the pandemic. East Side House’s goal is to always keep students on track for academic success, regardless of the student’s zip code.

East Side House welcomes students back to full in-person learning. Staff support students getting reacclimated to the classroom and build personal learning plans to get students back on track.

East Side House continued to tackle food insecurity in the South Bronx community. To make sure there were full bellies and warm hearts this holiday season, East Side House distributed 1300 Thanksgiving meal boxes to families in need. Special thanks to Alder for making this effort a reality.

COMING IN 2022 . . .

Seeing the continued need for nutritious food in the community, East Side House now plans to build a Community Teaching Kitchen.

East Side House thanks Amazon, Macy’s, and Congressman Ritchie Torres for their support of the project.

Through this kitchen we will provide 3,200 meals per day, training opportunities for young people interested in food services or project management, and create jobs for community members.
