INSIDE CITY HALL
CITY MANAGER’S UPDATE It is my pleasure to serve as your new City Manager. To the Ontario City Council and the entire city management team, commissioners and community members, and certainly the entire City of Ontario family, thank you for your trust, support, and working together to assure all of our stakeholders of continued progress and success during this transition. I am excited to be part of an organization that has visionary and steady-handed leadership from the City Council and a steadfast commitment to excellence and innovation from staff. My goal is to contribute to the balance and leadership set forth by the City Council and to increase the quality of service to our residents and business partners. Now, I would like to share some news about what is going on in Ontario.
Our sports teams are not the only ones celebrating something special. Our very own, Ontario Museum of History & Art celebrates 80 years of the Museum building that was first build in 1937 with Works Progress Administration funds. The Mediterranean style building served as City Hall until 1979 and now offers exciting arts and cultural events, programs and exhibits for the community to enjoy.
In January, Ontario was selected in receiving a $35 million grant from the California Strategic Growth Council, which will provide a major boost to Ontario’s plans for a modern urban village in and around the historic downtown core. The Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) program is designed to encourage transformative, neighborhoodlevel projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and create healthier, more resilient communities. Ontario’s plan features high-quality multimodal transportation, affordable housing, “urban greening,” solar energy, a small business incubator and workforce training. Some of these projects will break ground later this year, with others being rolled out in phases over the next three years.
On March 25, 2018, China Airlines will begin daily service from Ontario International Airport (ONT) and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), due to strong customer demand. China Airlines is already calling Ontario, Southern California’s new gateway to Asia. Since ONT was brought back to local control, we have seen strong continued growth in passenger and cargo volumes. In the next few months, we will also see improved shopping options for air travelers and airport guests inside the twin terminals.
The city owned, Citizens Business Bank Arena, operated by SMG, is bringing more exciting sports and entertainment events to Ontario. Visit their website at www.cbbankarena.com to find out the latest events and entertainment options. In addition to the exciting entertainment acts at the Arena, 2018 marks a special year for our home sport teams. The Ontario Reign, an AHL Hockey Team, celebrates its 10-year anniversary, while the Ontario Fury, a major arena soccer league team, celebrates 5 years. In addition to these long standing teams, we are welcomed this year by the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario as another offering for our variety of sports entertainment options in the Greater Ontario region.
Arts & Culture is gaining momentum across Ontario. Our new arts and culture website showcases a centralized arts calendar that displays various types of events throughout the City and houses information for our arts and culture partners. Check out the website today to find an event or exhibition near you at www.ontarioarts.org.
There is a lot of construction happening throughout the City. This is a testament of developers understanding that Ontario is the heart of the Inland Empire. Truly, I am excited to be part of this amazing community and advance the continuation of principles that make Ontario the special place that it is. Thank you again for the warm welcome and I look forward to seeing you at future events. Scott Ochoa City Manager

CIT Y NEWS
Ontario’s Oldest Park Behind the Ontario Museum of History & Art sits a white covered horseshoe court, known as Nugent's Park. Thomas Nugent came to Ontario with his daughter in 1886 from Belmont, Canada. Even though he came out here to enjoy retirement, like many others who came to the area, Mr. Nugent took up citrus growing and became a prominent orange grower. On May 10, 1895, Mr. Nugent granted lots 11, 12, and 13 in block 60 (now known as the corner of Lemon Street and Emporia Street) to the town under the strict condition that the land be used as a public park named Nugent's Park. The park was to have a fountain, an iron fence and a monument in Mr. Nugent’s memory after his death. While the area was used as a park, a bandstand
was put on the land and the horseshoe court was built; the fountain, fence and monument were never put in. Once the old City Country Club, that was located next to the granted area, became the first City Hall, the people of Ontario started to refer to the park as City Hall Park. Eventually the second City Hall (now the Ontario Museum of History & Art) was built and it took up a good size of the granted land leaving just the horseshoe court. After a push by Mr. Nugent’s great-great granddaughter, Susan Ademé, in the late 1990s, the City of Ontario rededicated the still standing Horseshoe Court and placed a marker honoring Thomas Nugent. Today the park is actively used year around by horseshoe enthusiasts.

Ontario’s Mayor and City Council are proud to announce this year’s National Night Out scheduled for Tuesday, August 7, 2018. The event will celebrate our city’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a high level of public safety and quality of life for our city.
The block parties can be coordinated through Neighborhood Watch Groups, community organizations or businesses seeking a unique outreach project. Residents with an existing Neighborhood Watch Group should contact their block captains for planning information.
National Night Out is designed to promote crime and drug prevention awareness, enhance participation in local anti-crime efforts, and strengthen our community’s partnerships with law enforcement. Last year, Ontario residents from more than 200 neighborhoods participated in the event.
Neighborhood Watch Block Captains are invited to attend the Ontario National Night Out kick-off meeting on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 6:30 PM at the Ontario Police Department Community Room located at 2500 S. Archibald Avenue.
We invite Ontario residents to join us in making this year’s celebration our largest ever. Areas throughout the city will be hosting special events such as block parties, flashlight walks, youth activities and anti-crime rallies. Several of these events will be highlighted with visits from Ontario’s Mayor and City Council, various City agencies including the Ontario Police and Fire Departments and representatives from regional agencies.
