editor’s note After our team took over Winston, the idea of a zine has always been looming in the air. We wanted something short and sweet–to project an idea that isn’t big enough to be developed into an issue, but an idea we are restless to manifest nonetheless.

It seemed obligatory to make our first zine a time capsule of the last decade. For most of us, the 2010s met the first friends that we really clicked with, our first phones and probably our first standardised exams. It was an age where we grew up in–the best way I can describe–chunky box televisions and flatscreen plasmas: an age where we still waited for shows to come on, but also witnessed the rise of youtube and online streaming.

During this time, child stars grew up to reveal their gruesome character, Disney classics got sequels, and music about mental health was no longer taboo. Online, the popularity of social media skyrocketed, giving rise to 6 second videos, a perpetually changing ‘meme culture’ and the new career of being an ‘influencer’.

In this zine we hope to uncover long lost memories, flood you with an overwhelming rush of nostalgia and overall encapsulate the motifs that unite our individual stories of growing up. We hope that everyone can identify with our portrayal of the 2010s, a culture and childhood that has brought us closer to people thousands of miles away because of the digital age.

In closing, I’d like to give a special thanks to Seline and Conroy, the most expeditious and critical–yet simultaneously graceful and courteus–editors I could ever be blessed with. I’d also like to thank the Winston team for their endless flow of passion and innovative ideas. Lastly, I’d like to thank our writers and artistic contributors for sharing their heartwarming stories, memories and opinions.

As kids who’s childhood’s majoratively reside in the 2010s, we owe something to this decade, and at Winston, this zine is our present.

More importantly, however, the 2010s saw the collapse of social, gender, age, and countless more barriers, marking the human race as more progressive, diverse, and compassionate than ever before.

These times were vivid in terms ofpop culture and social change, especially for kids that were just growing up, like us.
