More About Sport

Recent Sporting Success 2021/2022 Season Men's Football Our Men's Football 1st team finished second in the North West Colleges League and reached the Quarter Final of the National Cup. A highlight of the season was coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Reaseheath College.

Women's Football Our Women's Football finished 3rd in the North West Colleges League this season. A highlight of the season was defeating league winners Aquinas College 2-1.

Sport Teams We’re extremely proud of our competitive sports offer. Our staff include fully qualifed coaches across a range of sports who want to give you the best possible sporting experience. We pride ourselves on how we encourage you to play the game with the right attitude and in the correct spirit of the game. Over the last few years we have had numerous sports teams represent the college successfully at regional level which has led to them qualifying for the AoC National Championships. At the last championships, we had 30 students from 7 different sports qualify for the event: the highest representing college in the North West for that year.

Team Trials Selection for our representative teams is determined by sports team training sessions which take place each week. You are encouraged to keep coming to training even if you are not selected for the match day squads as we want every student to have the opportunity to participate in sport. You may participate in more than one sport if the sport training schedule allows.

Winstanley EXTRA!

Selection Criteria The selection criteria for our more popular sports teams is very high, with the majority of our team members playing at club and possibly county levels. However, our ‘quieter’ teams are keen to introduce more players to their sport regardless of playing experience or ability. We have a lot of students who want to try out new sports and this is something we encourage greatly.

WinFit Gym We are pleased to offer you a FREE gym membership when you join college. You will be able use the WinFit Gym during study periods and at lunchtimes. The gym has treadmills, step and rowing machines, free weights and assisted weight machines, so we cater for all your needs. To use the gym, you simply need to sign up for membership at the Freshers’ Fair and then attend a short induction that covers the rules and safety procedures.

Netball Our Netball team finished 2nd in the North West Colleges League this season.

Volleyball Our Women's Volleyball team won the North West Regional tournament and therefore qualified for the AoC Sport National Championships which took place at Nottingham University in April. The team finished 4th overall - a fantastic achievement for the squad.

Mixed Hockey Our Mixed Hockey team finished 3rd in the North West Colleges League this season. A highlight of the season was finishing 2nd in the North West mixed regional tournament.
