How do I get to Winstanley College?
Transport to Winstanley College is divided into two parts:
1. Private Buses (contracted by Winstanley College, mostly outside the Greater Manchester boundary)
2. Greater Manchester Buses (contracted by Transport for Greater Manchester or directly by the bus operator which is known as a ‘Commercial’ bus service).
Please note that we are not able to list above every bus route that serves the College and that all bus routes are detailed in this transport booklet. It is worth taking the time to look at other possible bus routes as one maybe better than the other.
Guidance and Helpful tips for Students and Parents
Before you begin to look up your bus number, it is important that all students and parents are aware of the following.
➢ We advise students to arrive at their bus stop at least 10 minutes before the bus is due to depart, this way you know you won’t have missed the bus and continue to do this throughout the year.
➢ Buses will NOT stop automatically at each bus stop, students need to take responsibility and put their hand out to stop the bus otherwise it will drive past.
➢ Drivers have a timetable to follow so they won’t wait for any student who is running late.
➢ Familiarise yourself with the bus number which is displayed at the front of the bus. This is really important as vehicles can change eg the morning bus could be a blue single decker bus, however in the afternoon (or next day) it could be a yellow double decker. Always look for the bus number not the size/colour of the bus.
➢ It is the student’s responsibility to look for their bus at the end of the day. Drivers do try and get in the same bus bay but there can be occasions where this may not happen. Although we are there to help students for the first 2 weeks of starting College, students have to be proactive and vigilant. Waiting for friends/texting on phones is a common reason students miss their bus which results in a very costly/inconvenient journey home for parents.
➢ Always wear your lanyard around your neck as it is easier to show the driver your bus pass.
➢ Bus passes need to be shown to the driver each time they board the bus, the first bus pass is issued free, however, any further lost bus passes need to be replaced by purchasing a new one. Student Services can provide more details.
➢ Bus timetables are a guide and the College cannot be responsible for the unpredictable/unexpected flow of traffic from one day to the next.
➢ Students private bus passes are not transferable, students cannot ‘hop’ between two different private buses, they are not accepted on the Greater Manchester Buses.
➢ ‘Dual’ bus permits are only provided if there are sufficient seats on both vehicles, they are not guaranteed. Students can only select one primary bus number.
Students Code of Conduct
➢ Students must adhere to the Code of Conduct when using any bus service.
➢ We expect all students to behave appropriately and show respect to each other and the driver.
➢ No smoking/vaping is permitted on the buses.
➢ No eating is allowed (unless drivers have agreed), no rubbish can be left by students.
➢ Students have to remain seated at all times, no walking/changing seats as this can obstruct the drivers rear vision
➢ Loud noise levels are not permitted eg shouting/music playing as this can cause a distraction to the driver.
➢ No bags/feet are to be placed on empty seats as this will prevent others from sitting down.
➢ Inappropriate ‘banter’ will not be tolerated and any breach of the code of conduct will result in the student being withdrawn from using the bus.
Settling down period
The first few weeks of term buses will appear chaotic and very busy for students but it does settle down. Our phone lines are extremely busy and therefore we only accept enquiries via e-mail
We will aim to respond to all bus related enquiries within 2 working days, depending on the issue we may need more time to consult with bus operators so we would like to thank parents and students for their patience and giving us the time to do this. We understand that parents maybe anxious too but College will not tolerate any verbal abuse towards its staff and ask that all bus enquiries are made by e-mailing Transport@Winstanley.ac.uk
Routes/timetables may need to be adjusted due to volume of students. Changes will always be communicated to students via their college e-mail.
Private Buses – Light Blue Timetables
These ‘private’ buses are provided by Winstanley College. Before any student can use our private buses, parents must apply and complete a ‘bus contract’ form. This will be sent to parents before enrolment.
PAYMENT COSTS/FREQUENCY
The cost and payment terms of our private buses is detailed in the transport form which is emailed to parents. Students are able to board the private buses on their first day in College (induction day) by simply showing the driver their student lanyard which needs to be worn around their neck at all times. The lanyard is given to students on their enrolment day. Enquiries about payments to: Finance@Winstanley.ac.uk
All buses – important
Our advice to all students who may have missed their bus home/trains cancelled etc is to make their way into Wigan Bus Station. This is the main connection point for local public bus services and trains. Details at the back of this booklet. Please discuss the possibility of an alternative with your son/daughter. If Trains are cancelled, students are advised to board the 352 Arriva outside the Train Station bus into Wigan.
Greater Manchester Buses – Orange Timetables
These services are contracted by Transport for Greater Manchester or contracted directly through the bus operator (known as a commercial service). Unfortunately, the College has no control or influence over these bus services. Bus timetables and routes are set by TfGM or the bus operator and therefore all enquiries/complaints need to be directed to TFGM or the bus operator and not College, contact details are shown on each timetable.
Students aged between 16 – 18 years old are now entitled to ‘Free Travel’ within the ‘Greater Manchester Boundary’. This is on condition that the student registers and applies for their ‘free travel’ at https://ourpass.co.uk/
Students without a valid bus pass students will have to pay cash for the full adult fare. Please contact the bus operator for details. If you are unsure if your son/daughter is eligible for ‘Our Pass’ then please check here: https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council
