Travelling by Car to Winstanley College

To get directions to the College please see the Contact Us page. Here you can enter your postcode into Google Maps and find the easiest route to college.

Parking

There is limited parking on the college site so we cannot guarantee all students a safe place to leave their cars during the day. For this reason, first year students are not permitted to park on the College site. We are currently only able to issue parking permits to second year students at a cost of £10. Parents are asked to avoid picking students up and dropping them off at peak times and not to wait in the drop off area. We also ask that students don’t park their car along Winstanley Road as this may be of detriment to local residents.

Travelling by Motorcycle to Winstanley College

There are designated motorcycle and moped parking spaces at the top of the car park near the Sports Hall. For directions to College see Contact Us.

Travelling by Bicycle to Winstanley College

You are encouraged to cycle to College and cycle racks are available against the Sports Hall wall. For directions to College see Contact Us. https://www.think.gov.uk/cycle-safety/

16-19 Bursary Fund

The 16–19 Bursary Fund is for young people from low income households who are experiencing genuine financial hardship while they are at College. The Bursary can contribute towards the cost of the bus pass and essential course equipment. If you are eligible for the bursary fund and also have a need to purchase an annual private transport permit, then you will qualify for the full cost of the yearly permit. If you don’t require a private permit then a weekly allowance will be made via BACS. These payments will be dependent on good attendance, satisfactory academic progress and is subject to the number of applications received and the funds being available. You can apply at any time throughout the year depending on your circumstances. Further enquiries regarding bursaries can be made by contacting bursary@winstanley.ac.uk For information on any other transport queries, please contact: Transport@Winstanley.ac.uk

Please note that we are not able to list every bus route that serves the College and that not all bus routes are detailed in this transport booklet. It is worth taking the time to look at other possible bus routes as one maybe better than the other. We encourage all students and parents to familiarise themselves with the helpful tips at the end of this booklet to ensure a safe journey to College. This booklet is divided into two sections. The first section provides details of all our Greater Manchester bus routes in navy blue, and the second section provides all the bus routes from outside the Greater Manchester boundary and some areas of Greater Manchester. These are known as private buses and are in light blue. Please take the time to read this carefully as some bus numbers/operators may differ from the morning journey into College to the afternoon journey going home, and students may have to change buses at particular bus stops. Bus timetables are subject to change by the bus operators, any changes/updates are provided to all students via their College e-mail. Don’t panic –we will send you more Transport Information around mid August so you still have plenty of time to get in touch with any enquiries before you start College. Just e-mail us: Transport@Winstanley.ac.uk

Greater Manchester Buses – Blue Timetables Some services are provided by Transport for Greater Manchester and others run as a commercial service. Timetables for commercial services are set by the bus operator and College has no control over them. Please be mindful that some buses stop operating during the months of May, June and July as a result of reduced numbers during the exam period. There will be other options for students to consider at the time so please take note. It is important for students to read the notes under the timetable as bus services may only run on specific days. In addition, students may have to change buses at a particular point. Students aged between 16 – 18 years old are now entitled to ‘Free Travel’ within the ‘Greater Manchester Boundary’. This is on condition that the student registers and applies for their ‘free travel’ at https://ourpass.co.uk/ Students without a valid bus pass will have to pay full adult fare by paying in cash to the driver. If you are unsure whether your son/daughter is eligible, then please check here: https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council

Private Buses – Light Blue Timetables A private bus permit costs just over £2.50 per day. You will be given the choice to pay by 9 monthly instalments as per below, or in full (£480) for the academic year 21-22 via our online payment system called Parentpay. We will automatically send you more information around mid August. Unfortunately, we do not offer the facility to pay by term. The cost of the private permit is reviewed each year and parents/students have to reapply for both years. 1st Instalment due on 1st Sept - £56.00 Followed by 8 monthly instalments due on the 1st of each month of £53.00 Please take the time to read the online enrolment form as there are terms and conditions of using the private buses. Our Transport Fee for the Bus Pass is a yearly academic fee, it is not calculated on days or months a student attends College. Students are able to board the private buses on their first morning into College (Induction days) without their bus pass by simply showing their student lanyard to the driver. (Students receive their lanyard on enrolment day). During the students first day in College, they will be given both your student ID card and private bus permit by their personal tutor providing payment has been made or their bursary application has been successful. Students can only board the private buses by showing their bus pass at all times. If a student forgets their bus pass on the journey into College, then they will be allowed to board the bus but must go to Student Services during their break to obtain a temporary pass for the journey going home. Students must have something to show the driver at all times. Buses will stop at any bus stop on the road that the bus travels down providing a student puts out their hand to stop the bus. Some private bus routes may have limited stops. We advise students to get to the bus stop 10 minutes before the bus departs. There are times when a change of vehicle is necessary so students need to be vigilant as some vehicles may not always appear to be the same e.g. change in color. Bus numbers are clearly marked in the front window of the bus or digital signage if applicable. Buses will have their dedicated bus bays and there can be occasions where a bus will arrive and has no alternative but to use a different bus bay, with this, it is the students’ responsibility to make sure they actively look for their bus going home. Please look up the light blue timetables for the private services to locate your bus number and its route.

Helpful Tips for using the buses • Familiarise yourself with your bus number and bus route. Bus numbers and bus operators may not be the same for the journey into College and the journey going home on the Greater Manchester Buses. E.g. You may get the Stagecoach 620 bus in the morning, but going home it may be Finches 962. • Find time to locate which bus bay your bus will depart from outside the College main entrance. Notice boards in the main foyer will provide this information. • Buses will have their number displayed in the front window, however as buses queue behind each other in a long line you may not see the number. It is your responsibility to be proactive and look for your bus. • Buses may not be in the same place all the time, please be vigilant. • Buses depart promptly, do not be distracted by texting/talking with your friends as you may miss the bus. You would then have to arrange your own transport home, which could be costly. • You need to show your permit to the driver at all times. Spot checks are done throughout the year. • As time goes on, you will become more familiar with your regular driver. Please do not assume that the bus will stop for you each day. It is your responsibility to put your hand out to stop the bus every day. This is really important should there be a change in bus driver as he will not know that you are a student from Winstanley College. • If you forget your private transport permit, you will not be allowed on the bus for the journey home. Therefore, you have to go to Student Services during your break and ask for a temporary pass. The driver will take this from you when you board the bus. You are not permitted to use a temporary pass for 2 consecutive days and you will have to order a new one via Parentpay. • Students must not occupy more than one seat by placing their bags/legs over empty seats. • Buses may have to wait on the main road until there is space in the bus bays at the end of the day. Please do not be tempted to walk towards the main road, you are putting yourself in danger by doing so. Keep within the College grounds and bus bays until the bus comes to you. • Please keep arriving 10 minutes before the bus is due throughout the year

Information and contact details Low Income? Bursary application forms will be sent to you automatically in August and need to be handed in on enrolment day. For any enquiries please contact: Bursary@Winstanley.ac.uk Problem with the bus or a general enquiry? We encourage students to report any issues as and when they arise so we can provide a timely response. Students can do this in person at the Student Services Helpdesk, or via e-mail: Transport@Winstanley.ac.uk Enrolment For general enquiries please contact: Admissions@Winstanley.ac.uk Can I drive to College? First year students are not permitted to park at College because there is limited space on site. We cannot guarantee all students a safe place to leave their cars during the day so do not drive to college. If you have a mobility issue please speak to your Personal Tutor. Our local Train Station is Orrell which is a short 10-minute walk from College. Connections available from all main train lines from Liverpool, Manchester and Southport – see www.northernrail.co.uk for routes and ticket options. Terms and Conditions Students Safety/Behavior • • • • • • •

We expect all students to be respectful to other bus users, the drivers and to behave in a responsible manner at times. No smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes is permitted on any bus. No loud music that may cause a distraction to the driver, or getting up from your seat. No eating or leaving rubbish on the bus. Students are responsible for wearing seatbelts if the vehicle is fitted with them. Students are not permitted to take up ‘two seats’ with their feet or bags or reserve seats for their friends.
