“ He started long before it was fashionable to protect or chronicle buildings. In some cases, this fact alone, that he brought attention to a building, helped to save them.” REX BALL, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, HTB INC. (and son of founder, Ralph Ball)

INTRODUCTION KANSAS NATIVE FOSTER HYATT PAINTED HIS FIRST WATERCOLOR IN 1930, after

turning his interest in horses into sketches while in high school. When he entered Oklahoma A&M (now OSU), Hyatt rejected the idea of studying to be a purist artist and chose to study architecture. Hyatt forged friendships at OSU with fellow architecture classmates Ralph Ball and Ed Hudgins, who later formed the architecture firm, HTB Inc., an international architectureengineering-planning firm located in Oklahoma. In 1939 Ball and Hudgins hired Foster Hyatt to create delineations (paintings of the proposed building and its surroundings). Painting the clouds above architect’s sketches started a six-decade career for Hyatt. After working in Oklahoma for two years, he moved to Santa Fe in 1941 to open his own delineation studio. It was then when his painting became a pure art passion. Hyatt lived in the oldest house in Santa Fe and began his fine art and historical conquest. He used the watercolor and air brush medium to depict the old Spanish architecture of New Mexico and Arizona. Hyatt had a studio located at 1579 Canyon Road called Galeria Casas Viejas where he sold water color paintings and prints of southwest scenes and structures. The following twenty-seven airbrush watercolor paintings are from a series of architectural renderings he created as original multiples and mailed to collectors, colleagues and friends. All margins measure 8-5/6 x 11-1/8 inches.
