TERMS AND CONDITIONS of AUCTION The following, as amended by any posted notices, specific bills of sale or similar instruments relating to a transaction or oral announcements during the sale, constitutes the entire terms and conditions on which property listed in the catalogue shall be offered for sale or sold by Murad Auctions, the auctioneer conducting the sale on behalf of any consignor for whom we act as agent. DDFAA (as subsequently defined) is not an auctioneer and is not conducting the auction or arranging any resulting transaction. In these Conditions of Sale, “We” and “Our” refer to Murad Auctions. 1. As used herein the term “bid price” means the price at which a lot is sold to the purchaser and the term “purchase price” means The aggregate of (a) the bid price, (b) A PREMIUM PAYABLE BY THE PURCHASER OF 17.5% of the hammer price (or 20.5% if bidding via LiveAuctioneers.com online) and (c) unless the purchaser is exempt by law from the payment thereof, any Texas or local sales tax (or compensating use tax of another state) and applicable taxes. Murad Auctions has been authorized by the consignor to retain, as part of our remuneration, the premium payable by the purchaser. 2. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot, and title to the lot shall pass to the purchaser, in accordance with all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon the purchaser (a) assumes full risk and responsibility therefore (b) if requested will sign a confirmation of purchase, and (c) will pay the purchase price in full in cash for all lots purchased. To prevent misdelivery and inconvenience in settlement of a purchase, no lot may be transferred. All property shall be removed from our premises at the purchaser’s expense immediately following the sale. If not so removed we may, as an accommodation to the purchaser, transfer the property to a public warehouse or other premises under our control or the control of DDFAA at the purchaser’s sole risk and expense. Each sale made pursuant to these Conditions of Sale will be deemed to constitute a grant of security interest by the purchaser to us in, and we may retain as collateral security for the purchaser’s obligations to us or our assignee, any of the purchaser’s property in our possession, and we may apply against such obligations all monies held or received by us for the account of, or owing to, the purchaser. Each purchaser consents to the filing of public notices or our lien. Whenever the purchaser pays only a part of the total purchase price for one or more lots purchased, we may apply such payments, in our sole discretion, to the lot or lots we choose. Payment will not be deemed made in full until we have collected all amounts due in cash or good funds represented by cleared checks or cashier checks. If the foregoing conditions or any other applicable conditions herein are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to us and the consignor by law, including but without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the purchase price, we at our option may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser or b) resell the property with a three day notice to the original defaulting purchaser, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for the payment of any deficiency plus all costs and expenses of both sales, our commission at our standard rates, all other charges due hereunder, attorney’s fees and incidental damages; or (c) take any measures it deems necessary. If Murad Auctions must resell the property, the original defaulting purchaser will be held responsible for any deficiencies in the purchase price, including any and all associated expenses including reasonable attorney’s fees, warehousing, commissions or any other costs associated with the default. No actions by us or any third party before or after the auction shall be deemed a waiver of any of the foregoing. 3. We reserve the right to withdraw any property at any time before the actual sale. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue and no lot shall be divided for sale. 4. The auction will be conducted by Louis Murad TXS 13362. We reserve the right to reject any bid

from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event the auctioneer doubts the validity of any bid, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sales records shall be conclusive in all respects. 5. If we are prevented by fire, theft or any reason whatsoever from delivering any property to the purchaser, our liability shall be limited to the sum actually paid therefore by the purchaser and shall in no event include any incidental or consequential damages. 6. Some lots are offered subject to a “reserve,” which is an undisclosed minimum price below which the lot will not be sold. If a lot is offered subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may implement such reserve by bidding on behalf of the consignor, whether by opening bidding or continuing bidding in response to other bidders until reaching the reserve. 7. Langley was an early Dallas printmaker, she exhibited with the Dallas Allied Artists, The Frank Klepper Art Club, Women Artists of Dallas County, the Frank Reaugh Art Club and the Philadelphia Society of Etchers and Graphic Artists. This print depicts the Magnolia Building, which opened in 1922, and the Pegasus was attached in 1934.

$600 - $1,200 A limited edition print c. 1935 of Howard Cook’s famous wall mural he painted in the San Antonio Federal Court House over a two-year period completed in 1939. At the time Cook was a well-known artist working on federal grants from the Works Progress administration. Cook is a highly collected artist known mostly for his prints. He was an illustrator for Harpers, Atlantic Monthly and Forum magazines, and two-time winner of the Guggenheim Fellowship among many other awards. Most of his works can be found in the Dallas Museum of Art, Smithsonian, Whitney, Metropolitan Museum of Art, DeYoung Memorial Museum in San Francisco, among many other collections across the country. 26. This painting was shown at the Texas Centennial in 1936. The mission was described as having spiritual light standing against a golden sky. This is an interesting image that connects the early Texas and Native American Indian histories. The mission was claimed as one of the oldest buildings in the United States. Today the structure is rebuilt, but stands on the original foundation and is now part of the City of El Paso, which was founded by the Tiguan Indians in 1682.

She became a full time artist only in her 60’s, compared herself to William Faulkner in that she wanted to create important art using the local environment. However, living with her husband TD Connell in the small cabin on Lake Bistineau near Shreveport, LA limited her resources. Paper became a popular medium of choice for Connell on which she created in collage and drawing. Her big breakthrough as an artist hit later in life, when she was in her 70’s, via Texas. She shared her work with Murray Smithers of the Delahunty Gallery in Dallas, TX. Her sales rocketed across Dallas and Houston and her energized esteem landed her a show at the important Manhattan, NY venue the Clocktower Gallery; The New York Times review to follow was an impressed and positive one. From that point on, her work has been recognized on the national level. The culture, people and struggles that were part of the working life of Louisiana plantations largely inspire her art. She often used earth and red clay in her drawings. Her inspiration to create art was spurred on by a trip to New York to do social work at the Presbyterian Church in 1952, the Abstract Expressionist movement that was in full swing inspired her. She spent much of her life at home on the Lake, but kept up with current developments in contemporary art. Her Works are found in the following permanent collections: Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, Austin, TX. 32

She earned her MFA in painting at the University of Houston. Some of her instructors included Texas artist, James Surls and New York painter, John Alexander. Koprivaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic background coupled with a trip to South American and Peru, specifically spurred her interest in the expressionistic subject of mummies, which is evident in much of her works. You can tell from her art that Goya, James Ensor and Felician Rops; and Edward and Nancy Kienholz also inspired her. Her works more often than not employ human images, withered and skeletal; themes of religious imagery and Christianity are entwined in her paintings. Often men or women are the subjects of her scenes rather than God or Christian characters when she is depicting religious imagery, like in this painting.

Chicago native, David McManaway studied at University of Arkansas. He received a fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Engelhard Award from the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA. He has an identifiable and unique style all his own; McManaway abandoned two-dimensional paintings in favor of creating his unique reliefs and assemblages made of found objects. His contemporaries comment that he had a boisterous personality and keen sense of humor; but at times could have a downright grouchy demeanor, which may have held at times socially. However, he had a keen awareness of the world and was very well read; he was a major Texas artist and had a big influence on others. McManaway discovered a film called Juke Girl in which there was a scene of a man selling little wears in small bags affixed to an easel; he called the goods in the bags “Jomo.” Hence the birth of what he started calling “Jomo” which were little slices of life, be it a toy animal or an animal skull. Sometimes he would just create one small piece of Jomo as a piece of art. He also created larger pieces he called “Jomo Boards”, this item is one of the largest Jomo Boards he created. He has had several solo exhibitions for his innovative works at the following: Dallas Museum of Art, Southern Methodist University Gallery and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX. Klepper is a native of Plano, TX, then grew up in McKinney, TX. Klepper is known for his paintings of landscapes, still lifes, animals and portraits all executed in his signature impressionist style. He painted in France during WWI, and Tokyo just before WWII and then in McKinney, TX during WWII. He was a member of the American Artists Professional League, Dallas Art Association, Klepper Sketch Club, New Orleans Art Association and the Southern States Art League. Frary worked on this particular piece for several years. He often worked adeptly in watercolor and oils. This piece is unique with the hefty build of paint to create sculptural elements; he also affixed wooden objects to the surface making this more of a construction. Both of these techniques are rarely found in a singular work, making this construction an exceptional example of Frary’s creative process. Frary is examined in the book: Midcentury Modern Art in Texas, by: Katie Robinson Edwards, PhD © 2014. She addresses Frary’s architectural background as having an influence on his artwork; which is clearly evident in this painting. This piece is likely one he created in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s and is evocative of the Post-War American experimental styles of that period. DeForrest Judd is known as a Texas modernist painter. He was a longtime professor, at Southern Methodist University in Texas, from 1946 until 1982. Judd also taught at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. Judd was born in Hartsgrove, Ohio and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, graduating in 1938. From 1939 to 1942 he did post-graduate work at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center as a student of Boardman Robinson. Judd’s painting style has a noticeable evolution over the years. The 1950’s mark his almost cubist one dimensional oil abstractions with his use of palate knife. Subject matter of his works focuses on native Texas plants, animals, insects, and the Texas coastline. This cubist rendering of red boats and a sea cabin, likely along the Texas gulf created in 1952 makes this piece ahead of its time. His work is in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Beaumont, Texas Museum and many other private Texas Art Collections across the state and country.

In the book, Baker describes this work as: “The third work… from 1907 is a large landscape, titled Overlooking lower Bay – from Dongan Hills – Staten Island, and is almost certainly a late summer scene looking out over the Dongan Hills and the Verrazano Narrows beyond from a higher vantage point on the serpentine ridge… These years would have been, and likely were the most productive period of Julian’s life. He painted like a man possessed in order to support his family. These often hard times gave him the experiences that laid the foundation of his reputation as one of America’s finest painters.”

Onderdonk is known to have painted on large canvases, the larger paintings typically being around 24" by 30"; this painting is one of his largest canvas sizes ever painted. The subject matter is an important snapshot in history. This stretch of the Dongan Hills, running to the Lower New York Bay, used to be an area of marsh lands, but when Onderdonk painted in this area the marshes had been drained and made into farm land; then throughout the 20th century the land turned into residential neighborhoods. Notably, this was the exact location Hurricane Sandy devastated in recent history.

This is a rare painting of early San Antonio, TX by the important Spanish/ American painter, Jose Arpa. Arpa was born in Carmona, Spain, studied at the School of Fine Arts in Seville. He then later moved to Mexico in 1896. He was hired by the Mexican government to be an instructor at the Academy of Fine Art in Mexico City. He befriended San Antonio, TX residents and moved to San Antonio around 1900. This painting could depict a private garden rotunda, the exact location has yet to be determined. The foliage and sky are executed beautifully with Arpa’s exemplary impressionist style with deliberate yet fluid brushwork and great use of color and light. His time studying in Spain under Joaquin Sorollo and Eduardo Cano de la Pena and those artists’ influence is evident in this painting. The white birds fluttering about and dappled sunlight create almost a snapshot of this warm and pleasing scene. This painting was recently discovered out of a private collection in the northeast, and has traveled back to its home state. TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY

The structure sheltered more than 1,000 refugees during the Galveston hurricane of 1900. The utility lines in the painting reflect a couple of important firsts for Galveston; it was the first city in Texas to have electricity as well as telephone service. One could imagine that in this composition, Stockfleth was juxtaposing the timeless, contemplative life of the convent on the one side of the wall with the progressive world on the other.

In 1947 he began his studies at Southern Methodist University with Ed Bearden, Otis Dozier and Jerry Bywaters, which is evident in the style of this painting. In 1958 he started working at the Dallas Museum of Art where he worked until 1991. During his 33 years at the museum he worked as Assistant Director and Museum exhibition designer. This painting is an excellent example of Delabanoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work executed in 1957. He uses different symbols from Texas and his life, like a Texas cotton plant in the Texas pottery and the yellow letter jacket draped behind the plant.

Lockwood studied art at University of Kansas, took classes with Henry McCarter at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He served in both World Wars and as a colonel in WWII. He studied art in Paris and spent several years painting in the artist colony in Taos, New Mexico. 1938 marks the year he organized a new art department at UT Austin; and is noted to have developed programs and exhibitions for students and faculty that were formative in creating the “foundations of modern art in Texas.” – Edwards. Lockwood’s work was widely exhibited during his active painting career. Weisman received his formal training at the University of Wisconsin (1935) and his PhD in art history from Ohio State Univ. in 1950. Throughout his career he taught at North Texas State Teachers College, the University of Kentucky and at Wayne State University, Detroit. Notably he started teaching art at UT Austin in 1954 where he taught until 1981 during which time he was the art department chair and received title of professor emeritus. President Lyndon B. Johnson selected Weisman to serve on the National Council of the Arts from 1966-1972. He exhibited widely throughout his career, and his works can be found in the permanent collections or the Art Institute in Chicago, Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio and the San Antonio Art League Museum. This painting was exhibited in the show: Texas Modern: The Rediscovery of Early Texas Abstraction (19351965) at the Martin Museum of Art, Baylor University 2007. This painting was exhibited in the museum exhibition: Texas Modernists that took place and was curated and shown at the Grace Museum in Abilene, Texas in 2015. Chester Toney was born in 1925* in Littlefield, Texas. Toney was a dominant force on the Texas Modern scene, known for his nonobjective, expressionist works. He was a central figure in the foundation of the San Antonio Men of Art Guild (1952). Toney studied at the San Antonio Art Institute, where he was a colleague of Cecil Casebier and Bill Reily (fellow cofounders of the San Antonio Men of Art). Toney’s work met great acclaim, and San Antonio artists, collectors and institutions (such as the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute) encouraged him to pursue a nonobjective style. The San Antonio Art League recognized Toney’s achievements, nominating him as artist of the Year in 1960.** Toney’s career was brief, but his success was significant, and his devotion to non-objectivity was pivotal during a period of transition in Texas art from traditional, representational imagery to abstraction. 72

This painting by Judd, a study in Cubist abstraction, was painted in 1946, the year Judd moved from Colorado to Dallas to Teach at the Meadows School of Art at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Jerry Bywaters also gave Judd a solo exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art, DeForrest Judd: Paintings, in November of 1946. Many artists worked through the transition from realism to modernist abstraction by studying and emulating successful artists of their time. The goal was not to copy the masterworks but to learn structure and technique in the process of developing a personal style. This painting was the cover piece for the 1947-1948 Texas General Exhibition.

Bror Utter was a founding member of the Fort Worth Circle, and was a contemporary of Dickson Reeder. Possibly Bomar references a scene late in the play when Medea appeared in sun god Helios’s chariot… Bomar’s scalloped Bessel is filled with water, held in place by fiery poles that could allude to Helios, as could the suns’ flame. A dark plum orb encircle sing the sun may signify traumatic end. Whatever impetus lay behind it, Medea’s Bath captures the circle’s cryptic surrealist and fascination with drama and myth.

He studied at TX A&M University and then later at UT Austin, but then started work in the oil fields. After that period he moved to Mexico to paint, during that time he produced work in a post-impressionist style influenced by Van Gogh and Maurice Vlaminck. He served in WWII with the US Army Corps of Engineers and a period at a Veterans hospital in San Antonio, from which he suffered emotionally difficult problems as a result. He returned to Bay City to care for his family business. Bess was recognized as a talent by New York, Abstract Expressionist critic and dealer, Betty Parsons. As a result of her representation of his work, his paintings popularity and demand increased, his works were shown at the Corcoran Gallery Biennial, the Witte Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Andre Emmerich Gallery Houston and the New Arts Gallery, Houston, among many others. Bessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work is abstract, many of the paintings are emanated from visions in his dreams; or include lines, eyes, crosses and other simple forms. Huband is originally a native of Virginia, attended Virginia Commonwealth University, and them attended the California College of Arts & Crafts, Oakland. He also studied at the Academia de Bella Arta in Perugia, Italy. Born in Seymour, Texas, Ancel Nunn began drawing at age 12. He added to his early art education through summer workshops under noted artists such as Dong Kingman and Alexandre Hogue. In 1944 his dry point etching, The Domino Players, won Honorable Mention in the prestigious Ingersoll Competition. The following year his watercolor, The Cockfight, was awarded first place. Nunn graduated from high school in Abilene in 1946. He entered the U.S. Army in 1947, spending several different active duty periods and attaining the rank of Major. During this period he did little or no painting. He was recalled to active duty in 1963 and produced no paintings during that year. In 1964 he was again released from the army and at that time committed himself to becoming a professional artist. While much of his early work was nostalgic in nature and reflected regionalist images, many of his later works possess somewhat surreal elements. Using common objects such as chairs, doors and gates he examines the themes of life, change and death. Nunnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art is full of paradox and irony. There is a timelessness and stillness even when skies are filled with tumultuous clouds. Objects animate and inanimate are lovingly painted in realistic detail. They are then transformed by unexpected spatial settings and unusual juxtaposing with often seemingly unrelated items. He maddeningly appropriates all history and events to reconstruct his own parables of life. His appropriations are as likely to come from the history of art as from the personal events of his own life. He playfully involves us in his journey of mental and metaphysical gymnastics and we are delighted.
