About This Report About This Report The Workforce Intelligence Network for Southeast Michigan (WIN) partnership is a collaboration of six Michigan Works! Agencies (MWAs) and ten community colleges across a 16-county region in Michigan. The counties in the WIN partnership include: Genesee, Hillsdale, Huron, Jackson, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Saint Clair, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Tuscola, Washtenaw, and Wayne, along with the City of Detroit.

This report highlights labor market information and real-time job posting data for Region 9 as a whole with special sections devoted to 8 occupational groups. WIN’s analysis of online job postings, a proxy for employer demand, is a pioneering method for tracking the health of the labor market.

Introduction: Region 9

Key Findings for Quarter 2 2017

Online job postings within Region 9 decreased during Q2 2017.

During Q2 2017, employer demand for all occupations decreased by 1.1 percent to 20,776 online job postings.

Despite quarter to quarter variation, demand within Region 9 has shown strong annual growth over the last seven years. Q2 2017 demand is 113 percent higher than the 9,297 postings in Q2 2011.

Registered Nurses take over as top in-demand job with large jump in postings.

Always a top occupation within the Health Care group, Registered Nurses have retained their top spot as the region’s most in-demand job overall. Employers posted 24 fewer job ads for nurses in Q2 2017, which is a two percent decline from Q1 2017 postings. Many other Health Care occupations offer opportunities for job and wage advancement proportional to education and experience, in addition to consistent employment growth.

Lucrative opportunities in Engineering and Design and IT group.

Both the Engineering and Design and IT occupation groups offered higher than average advertised salaries compared to other groups. Engineers and Designers reported an average salary of $78,000 per year while IT was slightly higher at $85,000. Those willing to overcome the education barriers in these fields can expect high potential earnings.

Employment reached a new high, expanding 0.8% but gaining over 3,400 jobs between Q1 and Q2 2017.

With the gain of 3,399 jobs in Q2 2017, the total number of jobs held in the region increased to over 421,476 It has been over ten years since this employment level was last reached. See page 4 for more details.

Many growing occupations in Region 9 require a bachelor’s degree.

Most postings in the Business and Finance, Engineering and Design, and IT occupation groups require a bachelor’s degree. Each of these occupation groups report generally growing demand as well as relatively high salaries. However, there are opportunities in most groups for a variety of education levels. Many Health Care occupations are attainable with an associate’s degree and most entry-level Skilled Trades and Construction jobs prefer a high school diploma paired with on-the-job training.

Postings over time

Region 9 Online Job Postings

Online job ads for occupations in Region 9 fell by one percent (210 postings) from 20,986 in Q1 2017 to 20,776 in Q2. This level of demand is 11.3 percent higher than the 18,663 online ads one year prior, in Q2 2016.

Postings have generally increased over recent years; in Q1 2011, 8,680 online job ads targeted Region 9.

Labor force/employment/unemployment The labor market in Region 9 has been improving since 2012. The labor force, which was then at its minimum just under 415,000, increased by 2,286 workers (+0.5 percent) between 2016 and 2017 for a new high of 436,253. Quarterly however, it has decreased by 1,106 individuals (-0.3 percent) from 436,806 in Q1 2017 to 435,700 in Q2 2017. Employment in Region 9 has grown since Q1 2017, gaining 3,399 workers (+0.8 percent). Yearly employment grew by 4,890 (+1.2 percent) from 416,586 in 2016 to 421,476 thus far in 2017. The annual unemployment rate in this region has also seen dramatic improvement, experiencing a decrease over the past seven years to its lowest annual point of 3.4 percent. The quarterly unemployment rate remained at 3.1 percent in Q2 2017.

Analysis Registered Nurses was the top indemand job during Q2 2017, with over 1,000 postings. Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Drivers also witnessed high demand with over 800 postings. There was also high demand for Sales persons and representatives in Region 9 during the quarter.

Job Posting Analysis Job ads for occupations related to Agriculture increased by 7.6 percent between Q1 2017 and Q2 2017, to 392 ads. Demand as shown by online postings is generally small and volatile in this occupation group, but has demonstrated an overall trend of slow growth. This level is 72 postings greater than Q2 2016, and 119 greater than Q2 2015.

Employment Over Time 2017

Employment Analysis Agriculture employment has seen stable growth during recent years, after a drop between 2007 and 2008.

In fact, current employment in the area has reached a new peak, with 33,449 individuals employed in Agriculture occupations.

392 total postings, 28 more than Q1 2017 Agriculture Top Jobs Posted Quarter 2 2017

Analysis Top jobs in Agriculture vary widely between quarters due to the small number of online ads and seasonal nature of the work. In Q2 2017, Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Technical and Scientific Products moved into the top spot. Landscaping and Groundskeeping Workers were the second most indemand occupation, followed

by Butchers and Meat Cutters.

There were 178 postings that specified a desired experience level in Q2 2017, and 90 percent were available to workers with under five years of experience.

Agriculture Wages and Advertised Salaru Of the 392 postings in Agriculture in Q2 2017, 77 specified an annual salary. Among them, three quarters were below $35,000 per year, with a mean salary of $38,000.

The table below containing data from BLS estimates that while low starting salaries are common and four out of the top ten occupations have a median wage under $15 per hour, there is room for advancement. Several top jobs, such as Environmental Engineers, Clinical Research Coordinators, and Veterinarians, earn over $40 hourly at the median.

Introduction Jobs in the Business and Finance occupation group can be found in nearly every type of business and industry. These workers need strong mathematical and accounting abilities along with project management and planning skills.

Workers in this occupation group are in high demand in southeast Michigan.

Job Posting Analysis Business and Finance postings decreased by five percent between Q1 2017 and Q2 2017, resulting in a decline of 58 job ads to 1,089.

Demand in this occupation group has shown a pattern of growth since 2013, with an additional 422 more postings this quarter than Q2 2013.

Employment Over Time 2017

Employment Analysis Employment in Business and Finance related occupations has increased every year since the Great Recession in 2009, gaining over 3,500 individuals since 2009. In 2009, the Business and Finance group employed 15,093 workers. In 2017, there are now 18,658 individuals working in Business and Finance jobs.

Of the 851 Business and Finance job postings that specified a desired educational attainment level, 78 percent preferred candidates with a bachelor’s degree. High school or vocational training was the next most in-demand level of education.

Seven hundred postings specified desired experience, and these showed similar demand between zero to two years of experience and three to five years with 273 and 356 ads respectively. In Q2 2017, entry-level Business and Finance positions are available to Region 9 workers willing to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Advertised Salary in Job Postings Quarter 2 2017

Only 191 postings in Business and Finance specified an annual salary during Q2, but those that did painted an optimistic picture. Of those postings, 31 percent were between $50,000 and $75,000 with a mean advertised salary of $55,000.

Lucrative positions in the field exist to suit the high education requirements. Entry level (tenth percentile) wages for eight of the top ten Business and Finance jobs are over $15 per hour, and seven progress to over $25 at the median.

From elementary school teachers to college professors, educators are the backbone of training the future workforce.

Instead, Education hiring peaks during quarter three, particularly in July and August when schools ramp up staffing for the school year. Q2 2017 postings decreased by 37 postings after Q1 2017 for a total of 414 ads.

Employment Analysis Education employment has generally been increasing since 2008 and currently has 33,812 workers compared to the 31,395 after the recession in 2008. Teachers’ wages are generally negotiated by a union and increase over time. The average advertised wage for Education jobs during Q2 2017 was $60,000.

Introduction Energy-related occupations encompass jobs in engineering, science, mining, and extraction.

Workers in this field have a range of skills all related to keeping businesses and homes powered.

Energy companies employ workers in a variety of occupations, many of which are also included in other WIN occupation groups. Data referenced in this section pertain only to job postings from energy-related businesses.

Job Posting Analysis Job ads for occupations related to Energy decreased by 52 percent between Q1 2017 and Q2 2017, from 86 postings in Q1 to 41 in Q2 2017.

Demand as shown by online postings is generally small and volatile in this occupation group, but has demonstrated an overall trend of growth. This level is 20 postings greater than Q2 2016, and 24 greater than Q2 2015.

Employment Analysis The data presented in the graph to the right represents total employment in the Energy industries (NAICS 2111, 2131, 2211, 2212, 2371), not just WIN-designated Energy occupations. In 2017, 3,920 Region 9 workers are employed in these industries. Employment in Energy declined between 2005 and 2012, losing 1,916 jobs. Employment levels are only about 200 workers beneath the 2001 peak.

Analysis Nuclear Engineers were the top job in Q2 2017, followed closely by Managers, All Other and Electrical Engineers.

Electrical Power-Line Installers and Repairers and Engineers, All Other were the fourth and fifth most in-demand jobs respectively, demonstrating the wide variety of occupations within the Energy group.

52% Decline in Energy Related Postings Educational Attainment

Many jobs in Energy have an engineering focus and thus require a bachelor’s degree for employment.

However, there are technician level positions that require vocational training such as an apprenticeship.

As seen in 70 percent of the postings that specified an experience level, energy companies posting in Q2 2017 preferred zero to two years of experience.

Demand for highly experienced workers was lower, with 30 percent of postings.

Only 10 percent of Q2 2017 Energy postings advertised a salary. Of those that did list a wage, all were advertising under $35,000 annually.

According to BLS data, wages for energy workers are high and offer upward growth. This is especially true for engineers and managers.

Engineers, All Other, reported median hourly wages greater than $38.

Engineers & Designers Occupation Group (Manufacturing Focused) Introduction Jobs in the manufacturing industry can range from assembly and production, to skilled trades and technicians, designers and engineers, and even computerrelated occupations such as software development. Demand for Engineers in the region has been consistent, and employment has been growing quickly.

Job Posting Analysis Online job ads for Engineers and Designers stabilized to 744 ads during Q2 2017, a minor growth from 742 in Q1. Demand for Region 9 Engineers and Designers has been varying around a steady average of about 710 postings since early 2015.

Employment Over Time Employment Analysis

2017

Employment in occupations related to Engineers and Designers grew modestly between 2016 and 2017, gaining 110 positions for 10,136 in total. A downward trend of employment for Region 9 engineers began in 2001 when employment peaked at 10,882 jobs, well before the Great Recession of 2009. Since the lowest point of 7,185 workers in 2009, growth has been consistent.

Employment levels are only about 700 workers beneath the 2001 peak.

Analysis Electrical Engineers remained the most in-demand occupation in Q2 2017 with 128 postings. Mechanical Engineers were the second most in-demand occupation with 107 online job ads.

Of the Engineers and Designers job postings that specified a desired experience level during Q2 2017, 81 percent required five years of experience or less.

The most in-demand level of experience was three to five years with 295 postings.

Education is key to augment experience for engineers. Ninety-two percent of ads that specified education, or 535 postings, required a bachelor’s degree.

The near universal requirement for moderate experience alongside a college education suggests that incoming students should seek work experience before leaving school.
