About This Report The Workforce Intelligence Network for Southeast Michigan (WIN) partnership is a collaboration of six Michigan Works! Agencies (MWAs) and ten community colleges across a 16-county region in Michigan. The counties in the WIN partnership include: Genesee, Hillsdale, Huron, Jackson, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Saint Clair, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Tuscola, Washtenaw, and Wayne, along with the City of Detroit.

This report highlights labor market information and real-time job posting data for Macomb County with special sections devoted to five occupational groups. WIN's analysis of online job postings, a proxy for employer demand, is a pioneering method for tracking the health of the labor market.

Introduction: Macomb County

Key Findings: State of the Labor Market Online job postings rebounded to a record high, increasing to 14,750.

Postings increased 17%, adding 2,100 postings between Q4 2015 and Q1 2016. Online ads have increased in Macomb County during six of the past seven quarters. See page 3 for postings over time.

Health Care, Engineer and Designer groups remain the highest in-demand.

These two groups are routinely near the top in terms of online job postings. Engineer postings outpaced Health Care despite the latter having 10,000 more individuals employed. Other top posting groups that were not analyzed in this report include Customer Service and Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics. See appendix 2 for more information on postings for all occupation groups.

Skilled Trade and Technicians demand has greatest percentage change.

Employers are hiring for Skilled Trade workers. Postings increased by 41% between Q4 2015 and Q1 2016, with employers postings 250 additional job ads. Q1 2016 marked the third highest number postings since online ad data began being collected in 2011. See page 6 for more details.

Macomb County reaches historic record of employment.

Employment increased by 1.4% between Q4 2015 and Q1 2016 to above 400,000 workers. This is the highest level of employment in Macomb County on record. Another encouraging sign was faster growth in the labor force, meaning that employers now have a larger talent pool to find suitable workers for open positions.

Job postings increased in all five occupational groups analyzed in this report.

Not only did the five occupation groups see an increase in demand between Q4 2015 and Q1 2016, but also between Q1 2015 and Q1 2016. While Skilled Trades jobs had the largest percentage increase since Q4 2015, Health Care postings jumped 42% since a year ago. See appendix 2 for more details.

Executive Summary

Total Online Job Postings 2008 - March 2016

Online job postings rebounded to a record high in Q1 2016 following a steep drop in Q4 2015. The 14,750 online job ads posted during Q1 2016 represented a 17% increase compared to the previous quarter.

Online job postings have increased in Macomb County during five of the past six quarters.

Labor Force, Employment, Unemployment Rate 2008 - March 2016

The labor force in Macomb County increased by 6,700 individuals (+1.6%) to 423,500 in Q1 2016.

Employment also increased by 1.4% to 399,750. Since the labor force increased more than employment, unemployment did rise minimally by 0.2 percentage points to 5.6%.

Despite the rise in unemployment, labor force growth is an encouraging sign to the health of Macomb’s economy. Q1 2016 marks a record level of employment in Macomb County since postings data began being recorded in 2011.

Analysis Retail salesperson jumped to the top of the most in-demand occupation list for Macomb County in terms of online job postings during Q1 2016.

Other top jobs included registered nurses, truck drivers, sales representatives, and software developers. These occupations consistently rank near the top.

Online Job Postings

WIN’s technicians/skilled trades category includes jobs related to advanced manufacturing. Southeast Michigan has more demand for skilled- trades labor, such as CNC machinists and welders, than almost anywhere else in the country.

NOTE: Skilled trades related to construction and assembly are not included in this cluster, as the focus is on advanced manufacturing only.

Postings Over Time Employer demand for Skilled Trades and Technician occupations rebounded during Q1 2016 in Macomb County following a drop in Q4 2015. Online postings increased by over 250 (+41.5%) to nearly 900.

Q1 2016 marked the third highest number of ads for the Skilled Trades since data began being collected in 2011.

Employment Over Time Employment for Skilled Trades and Technicians increased for a sixth consecutive year as 2016 began.

During Q1 2016, this occupation group employed 25,900 individuals in Macomb County, a 2.8% rise compared to 2015. Employment has now surpassed 2008 levels, but remains well below early 2000 levels.

Skilled Trades & Technicians Top Jobs Quarter 1 2016

Analysis Production workers jumped to the top of most in-demand Skilled Trades occupation list with nearly 150 postings during Q1 2016. Online ads for supervisors of production workers reduced by 40% between Q4 2015 and Q1 2016, possibly indicating that employers found talent for some of their open positions. Other top jobs in the region include inspectors, tool and die makers, and machinists.

Entry-level opportunities

Minimum Educational Attainment Required Q1 2016

Of online job postings that provided educational attainment requirements, an overwhelming proportion (81%) indicated a high school diploma or vocational training as sufficient for openings in the Skilled Trades. Most often, employers want Skilled Trades workers with either previous experience or training relevant to the position prior to hiring.

Another 50 postings indicated a Bachelor’s degree as a requirement, most likely for supervisor/ management positions.

Meanwhile, nearly all of the postings providing experience needs indicated that five or fewer years would suffice. The “0-2 years” category had the highest frequency of postings, indicating the availability of entry-level positions.

In addition to being able to perform their specific trade-related duties such as CNC machining or welding, these workers must also be able to communicate in teams, troubleshoot and problem solve. Furthermore, having Microsoft Office skills is now a common requirement in some Skilled Trades openings.

Advertised Salaries Quarter 1 2016

Of the online postings that provided advertised salaries, 61% offered wages of less than $35,000 annually.

An additional 20% offered wages between $35,000 and $50,000 annually. Overall, the mean average of all salaries offered was roughly $36,000.

All except one of the top ten indemand Skilled Trades occupations offer above a living wage ($15 per hour) at the median level.

Supervisors can earn over $28 per hour.

Online Job Postings

Jobs in the manufacturing industry can range from assembly and production, to skilled trades and technicians, designers and engineers, and even computerrelated occupations such as software development. Demand for engineers in the region has been consistent, and employment has been growing quickly.

Postings Over Time Online job postings for Engineers and Designers increased slightly in Macomb County during Q1 2016.

The 1,300 ads represented a 1.3% rise compared to Q4 2015. Postings for this occupation group have now surpassed 1,000 for the past five quarters.

Employment Over Time Employment of Engineers and Designers continued to rise following the substantial jump between 2014 and 2015. This occupation group now employs over 18,000 individuals in Macomb County, a level that surpasses early 2000 highs. The high demand for these occupations in the region should lead to steady employment growth in years to come.

Nearly all (94.3%) of postings providing minimum education requirements asked that applicants have a Bachelor’s degree.

A majority of employers in Macomb County seeking Engineers and Designers prefer applicants with some previous experience, mostly in the three to five-year range. The roughly 300 postings preferring candidates with 6+ years of experience are most likely management positions. Opportunities for recently graduated engineers do exist in Macomb County – over 150 online ads required two years or less experience.

Ninety percent of postings providing salary information offered wages above $50,000 annually while a majority offered more than $75,000. The high wages offered reflect the high demand and high levels of education necessary for these occupations â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the mean average of all advertised salaries was nearly $80,000.

All of the top occupations in this group offer over $30 per hour at the median level while half offer over $40 per hour.

Information technology jobs include occupations that are associated with entry level, technical, and professional careers related to the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, multimedia, and systems integration services. While the information technology group does not currently meet the employment levels of the others, it is quickly growing.

Postings Over Time Online job postings for IT rebounded this past quarter following a decline of over 100 ads between Q3 and Q4 2015. The 1,160 ads for this occupation group represented an 11.6% jump in Q1 2016. Employer demand for IT workers has surpassed 1,000 ads in the last five quarters.

In postings that advertised a preferred level of experience, employers most often sought candidates with three to five years of experience.

Opportunities do exist for IT workers with less experience, with about 170 online ads asking for zero to two years of experience.

The high demand and high level of skills necessary for IT occupations is demonstrated through the advertised salaries â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for postings that did provide that information, a majority offered more than $75,000. The IT occupation group had a mean average advertised via postings of $77,750.

Similar to engineers, nearly all of the top IT occupations offer wages above $30 per hour at the median level. One exception are computer user support specialists, which offers nearly $21 per hour and requires an Associateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree.

WINâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health care occupation group includes jobs related to health care support and practitioners.

Employment in this group has been consistently growing, more health care workers needed to care for Michiganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aging population and in response to regulatory and other changes. Registered nurses are routinely the most in-demand job in this group.

Postings Over Time Q1 2016 marked a sixth consecutive quarter of posting growth in Macomb County for Health Care occupations. The nearly 2,000 online ads for this group represented a 3.1% rise over Q4 2015. A substantial increase in demand for registered nurses has played a large role in the meteoric rise in postings over the past year..

Employment Over Time The increase in employer demand evident in Health Care postings during 2015 has resulted in an employment jump of 800 individuals (+3.0%). Unlike other occupation groups, Health Care employment was not severely cut during the Great Recession. Employment in this group has increased in all but two years since 2001.

Analysis Registered nurses continue to dominate the Health Care occupation group as employers posted over 600 online ads for this occupation in Q1 2016â&#x20AC;&#x201D;nearly five times the number of ads for the next most in-demand occupation. Despite the desperate need for these types of workers, other health care professionals are needed as well in Macomb County. Some examples include nursing and medical assistants, physical therapists, and various technicians.

Unlike other occupation groups, one particular form of educational attainment does not dominate postings for Health Care occupations. A high school diploma or vocational training was the most common form of education asked for by employers via online ads with over 450 online ads. Meanwhile, another 400 postings required an Associate’s while an additional 250 asked for a Bachelor’s. The nearly 100 ads asking for graduate or professional degrees were most likely for occupations like physicians and pharmacists which require years of education and training beyond a Bachelor’s.

Also dissimilar to other occupation groups was the distribution of experience requirements for Health Care workers. An overwhelming majority of employers in Macomb County asked for little to no experience from prospective candidates. This indicates that with enough training or education individuals can immediately begin working in one of many in-demand Health Care fields.

Similar to the broad range of educational requirement seen in postings, advertised wages within Health Care postings followed a broad spectrum. The mean average salary offered from postings was $62,000.

The disparity in wages for Health Care occupations can best be seen in the wage table at the bottom of this page. Seven of the ten occupations offer a living wage ($15 per hour) at the median level. Six of the ten offer between $8-12 at the entry-level (10th percentile).

Meanwhile, entry-level pharmacists can earn $45 per hour. .

Jobs in the business and finance occupation group can be found in nearly every type of business and industry. These workers need strong mathematical and accounting abilities along with project management and planning skills.

Workers in this occupation group are in high demand in southeast Michigan.

Postings Over Time Online job postings for Business and Finance occupations rebounded in Q1 2016 following a drop in Q4 2015.

The 734 online ads for this occupation group represented a 19.2% increase over Q4 2015.

Postings have now increased in five of the past six quarters.

This occupation more than doubled the number of postings for the next most in-demand occupationâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; purchasing agents (65 ads). Other top posting occupations included accountants and cost estimators.

Business & Finance in-Demand Skills Q1 2016 The Business and Finance occupation group had a broad distribution of advertised salaries. The $50-75k range was most frequently advertised. The average salary offered was $55,250. Fifty-three percent of the postings advertising salaries offered more than $50,000 annually.

All of the top ten occupations in Business and Finance offered near or above $15 per hour at the entry-level (10th percentile) while four offered more than $30 per hour at the median.
