Veolia Nuclear Solutions – Federal Services

EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS FOR COMPLEX PROBLEMS

Safely delivering compliant, innovative and reliable solutions

IMPLEMENTING THE MOST ADVANCED METHODS

Nuclear cleanup and decommissioning is a complex and dangerous process. Veolia engineers solutions for our clients’ most challenging needs, including remote retrieval systems, robotics, and stabilization/vitrification techniques.

Our waste management and treatment technologies can be deployed in concert to tackle problematic and challenging wastes. Our expertise focuses on remotely accessing wastes, separating the challenging waste and ultimately stabilizing the waste into a disposable form.

GEOMELT®

Veolia designed, built, owns, and operates two commercial GeoMelt vitrification plants in the U.S.—in Andrews, Texas and Richland, Washington. This technology treats problematic legacy waste for the U.S. Department of Energy and is also used in Europe, Japan, and Australia.

EXAMPLES OF KEY PROJECTS

Remote Handling/Robotics: D-Pit Remote Manipulator

Our engineers designed, constructed, and tested a long reach underwater manipulator for radioactive sludge retrieval.

• Payload: 50 kg limited, engineered for up to 93 kg

• Fully submersible arm, corrosion resistant

• Remotely operated via fiber optic connection, with multiple cameras

• Quick tool change interface, including optional automatic tool change capabilities

Idaho National Lab Liner Demonstration Project

Veolia provided a fully commissioned prototype of a remote retrieval system to INL. The system operated semi-remotely to retrieve and reduce the size of problematic waste liner at a Radioactive Scrap Waste Facility. The liner was transformed into a consolidated package that was safe for transport. It was then shipped to Richland, Washington, where a demonstration treatment was performed using Veolia’s innovative GeoMelt® vitrification process.

Cimarron Groundwater Remediation Pumping Project

Veolia engineered a custom ground water treatment system centered around ion exchange technology to treat uranium contaminated groundwater at a former mining site. The design includes a waste handling system and nuclear safety controls that enable compliant transportation and disposal of enriched (235U) uranium. This turnkey, field proven solution reduced the costs and timeline for the remediation work.
