Scene Setter The Winnipeg Jets begin a three-game road trip on Tuesday when they face the Anahein Ducks. The Jets have points in three consecutive games after winning both games of a two-game homestand last week, 5-1 against Anaheim on Thursday and 6-4 against the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Kyle Connor was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week on Monday after posting eight points (5G, 3A) in three games. It’s the second time in his career he’s claimed the honour. The Jets have scored five or more goals in three consecutive games for the fifth time in franchise history and second time since relocation. Winnipeg is looking for their first road win of the season after going 0-2-1 on their season-opening three-game road trip. The Jets play six of their first eight games on the road to start the season.

Kyle Connor was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week on Monday. Connor started the week with two goals and an assist in Winnipeg’s 6-5 overtime loss at Minnesota on Tuesday. On Thursday, the 2015 first-round-pick had a repeat performance with a pair of goals and an assist in the Jets’ 5-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Connor capped the week with a power play goal and an assist in Saturday’s 6-4 victory over the Nashville Predators to help the Jets to a 2-0-1 week. The Shelby Township, Mich. native’s five goals led the NHL this week, while his eight points (5G, 3A) were tied for the highest total. On the season, Connor’s six goals and nine points both lead the Jets. The six tallies are tied for the most in the NHL

Nate Schmidt had three assists on Saturday for his second career game with three assists. He had four assists Nov. 17/19 vs. CGY when he was with Vegas. Schmidt has started the season with six assists in five games after having 10 assists in 54 games last season with the Vancouver Canucks. Five of his six assists are primary assists. Schmidt has an assist in three consecutive games.

Kristian Vesalainen scored his first career NHL goal on Saturday in his 22nd career game. Vesalainen is the 74th player in franchise history to score their first goal with the organization. Adam Lowry and Paul Stastny, who scored twice, also had their first goals of the season on Saturday.

After playing mostly on the road in October, the Jets start November with a seven-game homestand from Nov. 2-16. The Jets longest road trip of the season is five games from Jan. 29-Feb. 27, which is interrupted by the all-star and Olympic break. After playing in the all-Canadian North Division last season, the Jets return to the Central Division this season for 26 games, as the division now numbers eight teams with the addition of the Arizona Coyotes. January is the busiest month, with the Jets playing 15 games, six at home and nine on the road. Winnipeg plays 11 back-to-backs this season: nine feature a pair of road games and two are consecutive games at Canada Life Centre. Tuesday is the busiest day for the Jets with the team playing 17 times, including four straight Tuesdays in March. The Jets play two straight games versus an opponent only once, a home-and-home set against their 2021 Stanley Cup Playoff First Round opponent, the Edmonton Oilers, Nov. 16 at Canada Life Centre and Nov. 18 at Rogers Place. The Jets must wait until Dec. 9 to play the NHL’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken, at Climate Pledge Arena before hosting them on Jan. 8 and Apr. 13. It’s an even longer wait for the Jets before they face the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning as they meet in Winnipeg on Mar. 8 and then in Tampa Bay on Apr. 16.

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff made two trades during the off-season to bolster the team’s defensive unit, acquiring Brenden Dillon from the Washington Capitals and Nate Schmidt from the Vancouver Canucks. The Jets made four selections at the 2021 NHL Draft in July, selected one American, one Belarusian, and two Russians. Winnipeg selected Chaz Lucius 18th overall after he posted 20 points (13G, 7A) in 13 games with the United States U-18 team. He’s embarking on his freshman season at the University of Minnesota, where he has three points (1G, 2A) in six games In the second round, the Jets chose Russian forward Nikita Chibrikov, who has nine points (4G, 5A) in nine games with SKA-Neva St. Petersburg in the VHL and has appeared in four games with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. Winnipeg chose defenceman Dmitry Kuzmin from Belarus in the third round. After playing in Belarus last season, he’s joined the OHL’s Flint Firebirds this season where he has a goal in one game. The Jets went back to Russia in the fifth round to select Dmitri Rashvesky, who is 14th in KHL scoring with 20 points (13G, 7A) in 21 games with Dynamo Moscow.

The Manitoba Moose swept the Grand Rapids Griffins last weekend at Canada Life Centre to improve to 3-2-0 on the season. David Gustafsson (1G, 3A) and Mikey Eyssimont (4G) lead the Moose in scoring with four points through five games. Manitoba enters the 2021-22 season with a new bench boss, as Mark Morrison takes over for Pascal Vincent, who joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as their associate coach.

The Jets went 17-10-1 on the road last season, which was tied for seventh in the NHL. The Jets were 9-4-0 in their last 13 road games and lost consecutive games on the road just twice. Winnipeg’s .625 points percentage on the road last season is the best in franchise history and the first time it’s better than .600. The Jets finished fifth in the NHL with 91 goals and posted a plus-20 goals differential.

The Jets went 13-13-2 at home last season, but started the season 10-5-1. Winnipeg’s power play clicked at 22.5% at home, which was tied for 12th in the NHL, while their penalty kill was 13th at 81.9%. Winnipeg is 206-134-33 at Canada Life Centre and have posted a .500 record or better at home in five consecutive seasons.

Winnipeg’s best period last season was the second with 62 goals, which was tied for eighth in the NHL. The Jets had a plus-11 goal differential in second periods, while they were a combined plus-11 in third periods and overtime.

The Jets had one of the best power plays in the NHL last season and finished seventh at 23.0%. The team’s penalty kill came in at 80.5%, which was good for 13th. It’s the first time in three seasons the Jets penalty kill finished the season at better than 80%.

Kyle Connor (15), Nikolaj Ehlers (13), Andrew Copp (11), and Blake Wheeler (11) also had double digit multi-point games. Scheifele and Wheeler each had a team-leading six three-point games.

Winnipeg won four overtime games all of the 2019-20 season. The franchise record for overtime wins in a season is 10, which occurred in Atlanta during the 2010-11 season. The most overtime wins in a season since relocation is seven, which occurred during the 2018-19 season.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck played 45 games last season, which was the most in the NHL. Since the 2017-18 season, Hellebuyck leads NHL goaltenders in games played with 233, 20 more than Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy. With 1,223 saves last season, he was the only goaltender in the NHL to surpass 1,200 saves, while his 2,603 minutes also led the league. Hellebuyck finished fifth in the NHL with 24 wins, marking the fifth consecutive season he’s racked up at least 20 wins.

Winnipeg Jets: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Paul Maurice Paul Maurice, 54, is in his eighth season as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets after being appointed to the position on January 12, 2014. Under Maurice, the Jets have gone 304-215-58, for a .578 points percentage. He has the most wins by a head coach in franchise history. Maurice became the second-youngest NHL coach to earn 500 wins after a 8-2 victory over Florida on January 13, 2015. He became the youngest head coach to reach 1,500 games on Feb. 5, 2019 in a 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks. Maurice won his 700th game October 20, 2019 vs. Edmonton (1-0 SOW).
