Media are asked to refrain from consuming these meals at their work stations in the press box area. Complimentary soft drinks, coffee, and water are available to everyone in the press box. 2018 pLAYOFF MEDIA GUIDE SEASON NOTES
PLAYOFF BOUND
40 WIN PLATEAU
For the first time since returning to Winnipeg, the Moose will move on to the post-season. The chase for the Calder Cup begins against the Grand Rapids Griffins. It will be the fourth time the Moose and Griffins have met in the playoffs. Manitoba won two of the previous series, including a sweep in the 2008-09 Division Finals. This season, the Moose went 2-5-1-0 against Grand Rapids.
With 42 wins this season, the Moose reached the 40-win mark for the first time since the 2013-14 season when the franchise was in St. John's. Manitoba was the first Central Division team to 40 wins this season. The team won 25 games on the road and 17 at home.
10 x 15 The Moose roster featured 10 players with at least 15 goals on the season. Manitoba is the only team in the AHL to have 10 players surpass the 15-goal mark. With 253 goals in the regular season, the Moose finished fourth in the league with an average of 3.33 goals per game.
RECORD-SETTING FIRST HALF The Moose had a first half to remember in 2017-18. The team posted a record of 25-8-3-2 through 38 games for the best winning percentage (0.724) in the AHL at the mid-point. That mark set a franchise record for the club's best start ever. The 2017-18 Moose reached 25 wins faster than any other edition of the team, requiring just 35 games to reach the mark.
WELL DECORATED The Moose are the fourth team since 1968 to capture the Dudley (Red) Garrett Award for outstanding rookie (Mason Appleton), Louis A.R. Pieri Award for outstanding coach (Pascal Vincent), and the Eddie Shore Award for outstanding defenceman (Sami Niku) in the same season. Appleton finished first in scoring among rookies, and fourth overall with 66 points (22G, 44A) in 76 games this season. Niku was third in rookie scoring and second in overall among defencemen with 54 points (16G, 38A) in 76 games. Vincent, in his second season as head coach of the Moose, took the team from a 68 point finish (29-37-5-5) in 2016-17, to a 92-point campaign (42-26-4-4) in 2017-18.
ALL-STARS Both forward Mason Appleton and defenceman Sami Niku were named to both the All-Rookie Team and the First All-Star Team. Appleton and Niku are the first rookie teammates named to the First All-Star Team since the 1988-89 season. Niku is just the fifth rookie defenceman named to the First All-Star Team since 1975. Both selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Appleton was the 168th overall pick and Niku was the 198th overall selection. Goaltender Michael Hutchinson captured a slot on the AHL Second AllStar Team. Hutchinson went 17-5-4 on the season with a 2.08 goals-against average and a 0.935 save percentage and two shutouts in 26 appearances.
MAN OF THE YEAR Darren Kramer was named the team’s winner of the IOA/ American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Winnipeg community during the 2017-18 season. Kramer donated his time to many of the team’s initiatives including St.Amant Foundation and the True North Youth Foundation.
USPORTS CONNECTION The Moose featured five former products of the Canadian collegiate ranks during the 2017-18 season. That group included Cam Maclise (Mount Royal University), Francis Beauvillier (University of New Brunswick), Elgin Pearce (University of Calgary), Charles-David Beaudoin (University of Quebec Trois-Rivieres) and forward Brett Welychka (Carleton University). Off the ice, assistant coach Marty Johnston and video coach Richard Bue previously coached at Carleton University.
RECORD ROAD RECORD With 25 wins on the road this season, the Moose tied a franchise record for efficiency away from Bell MTS Place. The team's away record was 25-9-2-2 and included the stretch of 12-0-1-1 from Nov. 24/18 to Feb. 6/18 which is one shy of the franchise record for consecutive games with at least a point on the road. The club previously hit the 25 road win mark during the 2008-09 season.
CANADA’S TEAM? Manitoba has enjoyed plenty of success this season against teams with Canadian NHL affiliates. The Moose accumulated a 13-5-1-1 record against those clubs with four wins against Laval (MTL), three against Stockton (CGY), and a pair of wins against Bakersfield (EDM), Toronto (TOR) and Belleville (OTT).
12 x 30 The Moose have 12 players who reached the 30 point mark, the most in the AHL. Of those players, three are rookies (Appleton, Niku, Spacek) and three more are in their first year with the club (Robinson, Sgarbossa, Schilling). The next closest clubs are Charlotte, Lehigh Valley, Rochester, and Stockton with 10 players to reach the 30-point plateau.
