OUR PROGRAMS AND INSTRUCTORS For over 75 years, WAG Studio has built a strong reputation for providing excellence in art instruction for children, teens, and adults. Classes incorporate current exhibitions with special tours, creating a link between the art on view in the galleries and the art created in the classrooms.

All of our instructors have degrees and/or diplomas from universities or art colleges and many have master’s degrees and additional certification in education. While most work in private studios, instructors also bring experience as members of artist-run centres, actors, administrators, art therapists, and designers.

ADULT ART CLASSES Adults provide their own tools and supplies for classes unless otherwise indicated.

Basic drawing and painting materials are provided for the first class, at which time supply lists are distributed. Intermediate Studio students should bring their own selection of supplies to the first class. For special workshops, pottery, and sculpture, supplies are generally included in the class cost. Students must provide their own tools for clay classes.

BEGINNER COURSES All skill levels welcome • No prerequisites NEW! Drawing on Mount Olympus Come face to face with the gods and goddesses of Olympus: The GrecoRoman Collections of Berlin. Take in the serenity of the galleries while you learn to draw the idealized human forms in this exhibition of ancient statuary.

Learn how to analyze the human figure, determine proportions, and draw a convincing 3D form. Interpretive and experimental approaches to observational drawing will also be explored. Whether you are a novice or seasoned artist, you will improve your drawing skills, and deepen your appreciation of Greek and Roman sculpture in an encouraging and focused atmosphere.

Traditional Drawing (20 weeks) Immerse yourself in the fundamentals of drawing and build skills that transfer to other art practices. Academic drawing remains an incredibly valuable method for developing dexterity and sensitivity with materials such as pencil and charcoal. The media and subjects of this class are basic, but its highly disciplined approach will reward you with a depth of skill that is acquired through time and practice.

Drawing Basics Retrain your brain! For students with little or no drawing experience, this introduction to the fundamental techniques and concepts of drawing will sharpen observational skills and build confidence. You will learn to translate what you see into what you draw. Work with a variety of subjects, including still life studies and the human form.

Sculpture Learn the basics of sculpture by handbuilding with clay: modelling, coil, and slab work. Begin with representational and expressive clay figure work, then move on to individualized projects.

Some clay finishes will be introduced.

A tour of Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin with a focus on classical sculpture will be available.

NEW! Molding & Casting

Pottery

Inspired by current sculptural techniques practiced by professional artists, this course guides students through the process of mold making and casting. Beginning with a tour of the NGC@WAG: Ron Mueck exhibition, students will research and sketch plans for their own self-directed sculptural works. Over this 10-week course, these concept drawings will come alive through model making, latex and plaster mold construction, and finally casting in wax and clay. A material supply kit will be available for purchase through WAG Studio. Clay and firing costs included.

Discover hand building, which includes slab building, slump molded forms, and throwing on the potter’s wheel.

From basic thrown or hand-built forms you will produce mugs, bowls, and platters. You will also learn glazing and decorating techniques to finish your work and develop your own ideas related to functional and non-functional forms.

NEW! Traditional and Contemporary Art Teachings Explore the roots of Indigenous art in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Develop your artistic vision, and create art with meaning and purpose.

Anishinabe artist Sharon Hall employs her traditionally-based curriculum, Art Teachings of the Four Elements and The Birth of Art, as the basis for her practice and instruction. Through discussion and hands-on art making, you will develop a body of visual art, and acquire creative skills and knowledge useful to professional artists and educators.

Handmade Books You will be making several styles of handmade books using a variety of methods for binding them together.

Books will be embellished according to your preference using collage, cut paper work, handwritten text, fabric and other found objects.

Beginning Wheel Starting at the very beginning, you will learn to centre, throw, and finish a potter piece produced on an electric wheel. Learn various shaping, glazing, and decorative techniques used by potters.

Mixed Media Combine disparate materials, employ a variety of techniques, and use your creativity to develop images and ideas. Enjoy the creative process while learning effective techniques such as paper craft, painting, drawing, printmaking, and 3D assemblage. You will complete a final project on a theme that interests you.

THE NEXT LEVEL Painting Basics Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Through your choice of acrylic or oil paint, you will be introduced to basic colour theory, and learn to use various brushes and media, such as thinners and thickeners.

Painting from still life, enhance your composition, decision making, and editing skills. As you progress through the course, your confidence as a painter will grow.

Acrylic Painting The Figure in Art Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Using a variety of drawing materials, you will work from a model and learn about proportion, foreshortening, and other fundamental techniques for drawing people.

Pen and Ink Illustration Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Are you inspired by stories and daydreams?

From William Blake to Maurice Sendak, pen and ink has a rich history and continues to be popular with illustrators today. Learn the basics of this versatile and expressive medium while improving your drawing skills. Tell your story in pictures, develop and design your own characters, create textures, and depict gestures. The end result is a selfproduced picture book.

Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • This course focuses on basic colour theory and particularities of painting with acrylics.

Drawing with Colour Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Develop your understanding of colour and its expressive potential for a variety of subjects: abstract and experimental drawing, still life, portraits, and landscapes. Learn fascinating facts about the history of pigments and the meanings of colours, as you acquire new observational skills and familiarize yourself with various drawing media.

Because you will use wet as well as dry media, this class serves as a transition from drawing to painting.

Life Drawing: Open Studio

Moccasin Making

Coordinator: Don Nowicki Wednesdays, 7–9:30pm • Sept 23–Nov 25 • $7 per evening

Sunday, Sept 20 & Oct 4 • Make your own pair of moccasins with Gloria Beckman (Niska), traditional craftswoman extraordinaire.

This drop-in program provides an independent study of life drawing.

Although no instruction is provided, you will have the opportunity to work from models in whatever materials you like. No advance registration is required; payment is collected each week at the WAG Studio front desk.

Bring your own supplies.

Sunday Workshop 10am–4pm Workshops are short, intensified courses offered alongside special exhibitions or to present media and techniques not usually covered in our regular classes. A supply list will be e-mailed prior to the start of the workshop. Please make sure you have all necessary materials on the first day of the workshop. Running for two Sundays, workshops take place from 10am-4pm with one hour off for lunch (noon-1pm).

As the Niska/geese get ready to fly to warmer climates, this one stays behind to teach us how we can keep our feet warm in the cold! Design a customized pattern and cut and sew the leather for your one-of-a-kind footwear. Share stories and learn about Cree language and culture. Gloria will also introduce beading during the first class. Students will have one week between classes to work on their moccasins at home.

FALL CHILD AND TEEN ART CLASSES Child/Teen Class Levels: 1 = ages 5–6 • 2 = ages 7–9 • 3 = ages 10–13 • 4 = ages 14–17 Child and teen classes are structured to accommodate the abilities of different age levels. These fun-filled classes develop skills in various media, fostering creativity and imagination. Artist instructors are paired with classes based on experience and area of specialization. Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions each consist of 10 classes on Saturdays or weekdays in the early evening.

Drawing and Painting 1 and 2

Painting 3 and 4

Ages 5–6, 7–9 • This course gives an introduction to basic techniques and fundamental concepts that artists use to create successful drawings and paintings. Students will develop observational skills, use their imaginations, and visit WAG exhibitions.

Ages 10–13, 14–17 • This course explores the exciting world of colour through paint. Projects focus on colour choice, while enhancing imagination and perception by using both traditional and new techniques.

Drawing 3 and 4 Ages 10–13, 14–17 • With a focus on basic drawing techniques and concepts, this course enhances observation and imagination skills, explores a variety of drawing materials, and includes visits to Gallery exhibitions.

Mixed Media 1, 2, 3, and 4 Ages 5–6, 7–9, 10–13, 14–17 • Students will work with a variety of material that may include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, or printmaking. Encouraging creativity, projects may be layered, mixed, and occasionally take more than one class to complete.

Cartoon Art Ages 10–13 • Using a variety of drawing materials and clay, students will take a closer look at cartooning.

Clayworks 2 and 3 Ages 7–9, 10–13 • Students will work on a series of functional and sculptural projects, using a variety of techniques to develop clay hand-building skills.

Clay and related firing costs are included in the class fee.

NEW! Clayworks 4 Ages 14–17 • In this course, students will enhance their previous skills in functional and sculptural projects, further explore hand-building techniques, and be introduced to throwing on a potter’s wheel. Clay and related firing costs are included in the class fee.

Animation Ages 10–13 • This course provides a general understanding of animation process and techniques. Students will discover different styles of animation such as drawing, cel animation, cut out, and claymation, while developing their own stories, characters, and designs.

A DVD of completed projects will be provided at the end of the session.

• All artwork left behind when classes end becomes the property of WAG Studio. Work students wish to keep must be retrieved within two weeks of the close of each session (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). We are not responsible for any artwork unclaimed by the deadline.

• Invitations and updates are only sent by email.

• WAG Studio will be closed Oct 10–13 for the Thanksgiving weekend. Classes will continue the following week. We are also closed for Remembrance Day on Nov 11.
