The Fabulous Fable Factory tells the story of Monroe; a 12-year-old boy who wanders into an abandoned factory and accidentally trips a lever activating the living factory of fable creators. This musical adventure re-creates some of Aesop’s most famous fables, such as “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” “The Tortoise and the Hare,” and “The Lion and the Mouse.” The bright and charming songs will entertain adults and children alike.

Circus Mojo is a circus arts program that teaches juggling, hat tricks, part ner acrobatics, plate spinning, tightwire walking, ball and stilt-walking, and character development through theatrical clowning. In this multidi mensional class, combining humor, grace, and athleticism, students are encouraged to conquer doubt and learn a variety of skills in a non-competitive environment. The last class will culminate in a finale performance, where every one will show their mojo!Materials fee - $25 is due the first day of class, paid directly to the instructor. Tiny Treks is an innovative program for families who want to teach their children about the world through exploration of their natural surroundings. We believe children learn best through hands-on experiences which build self-esteem and encourage a love of nature. In this class activities will include short stimulating hikes in a variety of outdoor settings, music, art projects and games. During the winter months we try to get outside as much as possible, however we do recycled art, other crafts, nature inspired projects, games and active movement when the weather is a deterrent. From the creators of Camp Amigos, Cooking With Amigos uses a highly controlled vocabulary introduced in conjunction with fun-to-make recipes. Receiving daily EWR’s (Engineering Work Request), you’ll work in teams to learn about robotics, and build & learn to CODE your own robotic creations using LEGO Education WEDo Robotics Construction kits and software. Jill Dunbar has been a creative force in the commercial and film production world since 2001. She has worked as a set dresser and wardrobe stylist on many major productions. Her interest in the arts started at a young age when she got her first camera. From that point on, her camera has never left her. She has shot everything from product, events, fashion, famous actors, sports stars and everyday people. Her work behind the camera has led her to The Chicago International Film Festival 3 times, The Swell Film Festival, The Arizona International Film Festival and The Hollywood Family Film Festival. She has worked on several TV shows, documentaries and music videos. Jill’s’ love for art goes beyond digital. Her art which includes paintings, clay and metal has been shown in Chicago, Skokie, Wilmette, Highland Park and Ontario, Canada.

Obedience 101 teaches the basics of obedience including sit, down, stand, recall (coming when called), stay and heel - everything your companion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and hand signals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Positive reinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewards or a small toy with you to class. No retractable leashes allowed.
Puppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment for socialization of puppies to a variety of people as well as dogs. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human and dog directed aggression, as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Other topics discussed include house training, mouthing, leadership, sitting and recall. This class is appropriate for puppies ages 2-4 months old. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinations prior to attending. If not, please plan to attend class without your dog until all vaccinations are administered. No retractable leashes allowed.
Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101. Additional levels of difficulty and distractions will be added. Dogs of any age may enroll provided they have a basic knowledge of basic obedience commands: sit, down, recall (coming when called) stay, and heel. Children training dogs must be at least 14 years old. No retractable leashes allowed.
Rally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog and the handler. Rally is a sport in which all dogs are encouraged to participate. Purebred or mixed breed, every dog can learn the fundamentals for Rally. Dogs must have strong heeling skills to take this course. In rally an enthusiastic attitude and wagging tail are as important as precision. In fact, handlers are not only allowed to, but encouraged to positively reinforce their dogs during the competition with verbal praise, petting and even food rewards! Dogs and handlers should both appear to be enjoying the work and each other’s company. No retractable leashes allowed.
Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. She has been recognized for several years as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator by the American Kennel Club, as well as a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers, an affiliate organization of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the first organization to offer a national standard for trainer certification.
Creative Paws uses positive reinforcement training methods to improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing an effective means of communication and understanding as the foundation for learning. We believe that training your dog should be enjoyable for both you and your dog!

PuPPY CLASS
Michael Jayko 8 weeks to 6 months. Learn how to help transition your dog from being a sweet puppy to the faithful dog you’ve always wanted. This class will teach you the reasoning behind a puppy’s thought process as well as the prevention of and response to unwanted behavior. You will learn the techniques of using body language to communicate to your puppy what is acceptable and what is not. Other essential puppy how-tos will be provided such as basic grooming, simple, commands and vet visits. Teaching your puppy should not be time-consuming or painful. This class will teach you the best ways to train your dog while still living your life. Beginning the socialization process during puppyhood ensures that your dog will more likely grow to be well adjusted and highly adaptable to other dogs, people and situations.
All Ages. For dogs that are well-behaved off-leash. This class is mainly for fun and exercise with your dog. Mellow out your high-energy dog on walks with the extra workout techniques you will learn. Agility training can also help more insecure dogs build confidence through learning how to overcome things that might seem “scary” (i.e. obstacles, jumps, etc.). Not only is this class a great form of physical activity, it also builds trust between you and your dog as you are there to assure them through obstacles. Almost everything taught in the agility class can be easily translated to your daily walks.
Michael “The Dog Guru” Jayko With 25 years of dog training experience, Michael has witnessed and worked with almost every aspect in the field of dog behavior including competition obedience, agility, tracking, scent discrimination, police dogs, behavior modification, diabetic alert dogs and guide dog training. With a Bachelor’s Degree in the Applied Behavioral Sciences, Michael combines human and dog psyches to create a successful bond between the dog and its handler.
All Ages. You may have heard the expression, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” There is always hope of teaching your dog new tricks, it just requires forming some new habits. Learn the basic commands of sit, down, stay, heel and come. Solve some of the common issues or problems that you have with your dog. This class will teach you how to effectively train your dog while maintaining your lifestyle. If you begin to think like your dog and understand the proper communication, your dog will eventually become an extension of you.
As an instructor with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Michael was involved with the training of Roselle, a yellow lab, who successfully traversed 78 flights to guide her handler to safety during the chaos of 9/11. As a member of the APDT, CPDT and NADRA, a certified Canine Good Citizen instructor, and a mentor for Animal Behavior College, Michael works with all breeds and issues.
You can often see Michael biking or roller blading with a dog or walking a large pack through the neighborhoods of the 60093 zip code. As a member of the WinnetkaNorthfield community Michael also gives dog safety talks to schools as well as Boy and Girl Scout troops. YOuR

At the beginning of each class students have the opportunity to free draw from their own imagination. A story is read from a wonderfully illustrated children?s book to begin each lesson. Famous artists are also introduced along with materials and the cre ative process begins. In this mixed media class, we will use watercolors, tempera paint, oil pastels and more! This open ended art curric ulum celebrates individual ity and free expression. Try a new project every week!
Carole Pearlman is the founder of The Joy of Creativity art program. Inspiring curriculum, freedom of expression and opportunities to explore many art materials make this innovative program a creative success for each student. Carole holds a BFA in painting and a Masters degree in education and psychology.
Sunshine Arts And Crafts
Amazing Art combines all your favorite art projects and mixed media in one unique class. Kids will make tie dye shirts (to be used as art smocks for the session), experience pottery painting, create fired ceramic arts, paint a canvas acrylic painting, do recycled arts projects and more. Lessons will include concepts and techniques kids can use for a lifetime and the experience of creating awesome projects will result in great self esteem and a sense of accomplishment. Finished work will be taken home immediately. This is a drop off program. All new lessons are offered each session.

Small hands have big ideas. Let’s build them! We will try throwing on the wheel, learn how to coil and slab build, and combine them for maximum creativity.
Learn to throw on the potter’s wheel. This class will teach young students how to center, shape, trim, decorate and glaze their unique clay masterpieces. No experience is necessary.
In this class, your child will create functional and decorative works of art relating to a character, theme or object from children’s literature. Each week the instructor will read a children’s story which will serve as inspiration for that week’s clay project.
For the maturing maker, this class will focus on developing student ideas to create fulfilled objects from clay. Students will learn hand building techniques such as slab, coil and pinching as well as throwing on the wheel to form a repertoire of construction techniques useful throughout the artist’s career. Unstructured play and exploration of materials and techniques are highly encouraged!
Learn how to hand build decorative and functional pieces such as bowls, mugs, vases, trays and sculptures. Try various clay techniques such as pinching, coiling, slab rolling, carving, stamping, screen printing, sgraffito and slip decoration. Create beautiful pieces that will be fired, glazed and ready to take home and enjoy. No experience is necessary!
Create 3 beautiful Valentines to give to family and friends. Learn hand-building, decorating and glazing techniques as you and your child create wonderful art together. From a lump of clay to finished vessel, all the steps of centering, shaping, trimming, decorating and glazing are covered during the semester. All adults are welcome : from complete novice through more experienced. Beginners concentrate on making, decorating and glazing basic forms both functional or non-functional. Students with previous experience may advance at their own pace, learning more complex forms and glazing techniques.
Combine the basic techniques of hand sewing and machine sewing in this 8 week course. You’ll learn basic stitch techniques by hand and you’ll learn how to use the sewing machine. By the end of the class, you will have completed at least two different projects, one by hand and one by machine. Sewing supplies, including fabric, thread, needles, and pins, will be provided. Students may choose to purchase additional specialty items on their own.

In this adult sewing class, you’ll learn the basics of clothing patterns and production. You will have the opportunity to brush-up on hand stitches and review the sewing machine. By the end of the course, you will have created an article of clothing of your choice. This is the ideal class for a beginner or advanced sewer. If students have their own sewing machines, they are encouraged to bring it. If not, sewing machines will be provided. Basic sewing materials will be provided; but students will need to purchase their own patterns and fabric.
This class is a continuation of Fashion Sewing Techniques. Students will continue to learn about the sewing machine and they will learn about pattern production. By the end of this course students will have completed pajama pants! This class is perfect for students looking to advance their sewing skills. Sewing supplies, including fabric, thread, needles, and pins, will be provided. Students may choose to purchase additional specialty items on their own. This class is for the beginning guitarist. Students will learn how to apply basic musical concepts such as rhythm, harmony and melody to the guitar. At the end of the class you will be able to read and play basic chord symbols and melodies. We will even learn some songs! With consistent practicing throughout the term, past students have learned to improvise and finger pick as well! Please bring your own guitar. All ages are welcome. Lessons are 30 minutes long. Brandon Seyferth has been teaching guitar in Glencoe and Chicago for more than seven years. With a focus on results-based instruction, Brandon is a fun, dynamic, versatile and experienced teacher. He has performed, composed, and recorded with such notables as Jackson Browne, Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes), Pat MacDonald (Timbuk3), Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown and the most sampled drummer in hip hop), and Jay Bennet (Wilco).

Improve your inner VOICE! Students will be taught basic vocal techniques and will understand vocal health concepts. They will explore various musical genres, discover their own individual style, build their vocal confidence and improve stage presence. They will also learn vocal warm-ups, relevant musical terminology and also learn how to connect with the story behind each song. Constructive, creative feedback will be provided, working towards a final performance with the song of their choice. Final performance will consist of 3 talented judges critiquing their performance, awarding each performer with a musical certificate!

This interactive program is designed to help integrate Pre-K and half day Kindergartners to the experience of a full day of school. The program will consist of physical activity, story time geared around sports stories, a small snack and nap time, tumbling and gymnastics, as well as lessons about the body and nutrition. The program is tailored for kids to socialize in an athletic setting focused on teamwork and fun. Participants enrolled in the afternoon program at Winnetka Community Nursery School will be provided a chaperoned escort by the coaches to their classes once Sports School ends. Come ready to play and learn in this one-of-a-kind class!

Total Sports not only teaches children the basic skills of playing a particular sport, it also teaches them skills needed to work with one another as teammates, and to accept each individual as a valuable player. Hockey fundamentals as well as game strategy, teamwork, sportsmanship and safety will be stressed each week. Players will learn key concepts and rules as well as valued fundamentals to allow them to get a jump start on the competition before Hockey Season kicks off. Participants will be free to wear shin guards and gloves however these items are not required.
Young children develop motor skills while having fun running and kicking just like the big kids! Parents and tots work together in this class to learn the basics of soccer. Dribbling, passing, shooting and kicking will all be emphasized. A variety of activities designed around the game of soccer will be played each week.
Interested in sports and ceramics but can’t make up your mind about what to do this fall? Try both! Spend 45 minutes in our gymnasium playing recreational games such as soccer, basketball, kickball and more. Through teamwork and sportsmanship we offer a nurturing atmosphere for learning the fundamentals of a variety of sports. Next, students visit the ceramics studio for 45 minutes working on creative projects that have sports intertwined. This is a great opportunity to develop both large and small motor skills in a fun environment.

The JSA’s Premier level is the top level of classes for your young soccer star. In this class, players develop a close familiarity with the ball and learn the importance of always having it under control. By the end of class your child will learn about landing on their shooting foot, precision shots vs. power shots, trapping the ball in the air and field awareness.

hot Shots Sports Staff Hot Shots Sports has partnered with Northshore Rugby to bring a fun, non-contact Rugby class to Winnetka! Players will learn all the fundamentals and rules of one of the world?s fastest growing sports. The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. This has led many to describe the sport as “physical chess.” Fencing also teaches balance and discipline and even more than this, it’s fun! This class is for those new to fencing or those who would like to work on the basic skills. This class will cover basic rules, etiquette, basic footwork, attacks and defenses. Classes will consist of warm up time, footwork time, group lesson and bouting. All equipment is provided.
These 45 minute clinics are an introduction to basic basketball for the beginner. Classes will provide a comfortable and fun group environment as participants learn the fundamentals of the sport with an emphasis on dribbling and ball handling. 3Point’s engaging staff will emphasize activities that help develop basic motor skills, hand-eye coordination and following directions. Each participant will receive a Little Hoopers shirt.

If you have a first through third grade boy or girl interested in playing basketball against other area players without the hassle of traveling to a different location for every game, this program is for them. Participants will learn fundamental skills through weekly practice and games. Adult volunteers coach all teams. First grade games will have youth size basketballs and eight foot basketball rims. Second grade will have youth size basketballs and 9 foot basketball rims. Third grade games will have adult size basketballs, 10 foot basketball rims, full court play and score will be kept. All games will have staff referees and timekeepers. All participants will receive a team t-shirt and commemorative basketball.
1. Teams will be established according to school (Crow Island, Greeley, Hubbard Woods, Sacred Heart, Faith Hope, North Shore Country Day and more), there will be no evaluation. When filling out your registration form please remember to insert your child/children’s school. Otherwise placement on a particular school team cannot be guaranteed. If there are more than 10 children from a school, multiple teams will be formed. If there are too few children from any one school, children will be placed on a team according to village of residence. Due to the number of children in this program requests will not be taken
2. Each team will have a one hour practice during the week. Time, assigned at a later date, will be between Monday and Friday, 5:00-8:00 p.m. There will be two weeks of practice before the first game.

Participants are carefully initiated into this karate which focuses on alertness of mind, self-control and mental strategies to meet life challenges. Traditional Karate is a martial art which emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of total body dynamics and mental discipline. Students will constantly strive for technical excellence and enhancement of ones character. The following items are optional and will incur additional costs: uniforms, belt tests and tournaments. Belt Ranking System: There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the white belt rank (eleventh kyu). Students must fulfill certain requirements under normal practice conditions and in a test environment to secure progressive promotions up to and including the black belt (dan) levels. When a student has acquired a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Karate, he or she can be promoted to the rank of first-degree black belt.

Frank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the Traditional Karate Program for the Winnetka Community House in 1989. He has trained in Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articles in the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on local and national television programs. Ron Stein has trained in karate since 1981. His karate experience extends to Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. He has been with the Winnetka Community House Karate Program since 1994.

Taekwondo is a 2000 year old martial art offering a variety of benefits for people of all ages and physical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self esteem, achieve lifelong physical fitness and learn self-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G. Master Ki Hong Kim (Ninth Dan Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters). A $45 uniform fee is required at the first class. Belt testing is offered through the KH Kim Taekwondo at an additional fee and is held twice a year. All colored belt students are required to have complete sparring gear.

Founded in 1924, the North Shore Art League is a non-profit organization offering art classes for adults and children. As the only art center located in Winnetka, the NSAL not only offers art education, but also lectures, workshops, field trips, gallery shows and special art events to the entire North Shore community. A summer juried art fair, Art in the Village, takes place in Hubbard Woods Park - right in the middle of the Hubbard Woods Design District and along bustling Green Bay Road. in June.

A nationally accredited preschool for children ages 3-5, offering indoor and outdoor activities in a stimulating environment in which physical, social, intellectual and emotional growth is encouraged. Learning materials encourage creativity, promote cognitive growth and develop manipulative skills. The school also includes an extended day program and “Lunch Bunch” program. WCNS’s extended day program, Splendid Day, is an enriching afternoon for children ages three to six years. The Winnetka Youth Organization, commonly known as “the YO”, is a nonprofit teen drop-in center located in the basement of the Winnetka Community House. Since 1969, we have served as the only youth organization of its kind in Winnetka. Each year, the YO provides services to upwards of 1000 teens from this community. This includes recreational activities, music events, social service, diversity and education projects, and participation on the Youth Leadership Board.
The mission of the Winnetka Youth Organization is to foster individual development in junior high and high school youth in the North Shore by providing adult-to-youth mentoring, prevention services, and opportunities for leadership, citizenship, and, education within a safe, informal environment. The Winnetka Children’s Hour, a non-profit organization, has been providing live, original theatre performances for area families since 1932. This year’s show, “Night Tales,” held February 4-6, 2016, tells the story of two children trapped in a library overnight. What happens when their favorite story book characters magically appear? Will Captain Hook replace his hook? Will Puss in Boots and the Cheshire Cat stop fighting? Will The Grinch help our heroes find their way home? “Night Tales” is filled with characters and songs the entire family will recognize and enjoy. Membership Information
Early registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done via the web at winnetkacommunityhouse.org, fax or in person at Winnetka Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a spot in a class.
All family members in your household are eligible for membership benefits. When registering for membership, just list your family members, and they will be included for the program registration benefits automatically when registering for classes.
Members receive a notice about one month prior to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year. Refunds for memberships will not be available.
How To Register
• To register for a membership simply list all eligible members on the registration form. Then check the box and add the membership fee in with your registration.

• Read and fill out form completely. By listing your email address, you agree to receive email communications from Winnetka Community House. • Sign the registration form.
• Unsigned forms will not be processed, but will be returned to you. This will delay processing your registration. Registration forms may be mailed or faxed. Registration by telephone is not accepted.
Credit Cards
You may use your credit card for all programs which appear with a class number or for a Fitness Centre membership. Fitness Centre memberships are obtained at the Fitness Centre only. Be sure to fill out the credit card information completely and sign the form. We do not take telephone registration. However, if you are paying by credit card, you may fax your registration to (847) 446-0609.
Cancellation of Classes
Prior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.
Refund Policy
Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insufficient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.
emergency Closings
The Winnetka Community House endeavors to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There are times, however, when weather, road conditions or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be cancelled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In order to provide employees and patrons with a safe and secure environment in which to work and play, the Winnetka Community House reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program when deemed necessary.
Inclement Weather Policy
If school District 36 cancels classes for the entire day, all Winnetka Community House children’s programs (including Free-To-Be-Kids childcare) starting before 12noon will be cancelled. Decisions on all adult programs and children’s programs starting after 12noon, will be made on a case-bycase basis. Please check www.winnetkacommunityhouse.orgfor complete details on class cancellations.
Prorated Policy
Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.
Religious Holidays
Winnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.
• Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times.
• Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible.
If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our Executive Director.
