Purchase your tickets at the WCH front desk the day of the event, and enjoy a whole new experience.

Indulge in a morning of art immersion right here on the North Shore! This area has long drawn lovers of beauty, be it professional painters, sculptors, architects or other residents with an artistic eye and a penchant for expression. Since its founding in 1924, the North Shore Art League (NSAL) has attracted many such kindred spirits as a place to learn, practice, exhibit and socialize. The NSAL’s dynamic present and distinguished past come alive at this Fall kickoff event of the Winnetka Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago. Light refreshments in a garden setting precede the opening lecture by art historian, AIC lecturer and period expert Wendy Greenhouse, who will discuss the lives, art and times of
several renowned NSAL artists. Next enjoy the large, beautifully curated NSAL Members’ Show, which exhibits multiple media and delightful “Art in Bloom” displays---floral arrangements by professional designers and garden clubs that interpret selected works. Concurrently, coax your own muse with demonstrations of painting and printmaking techniques by NSAL instructors in the League’s charming fireside studio and in the associated print room. THYME to TURNIP the BEET on what KIDS EAT! Let your child release their inner chef! Students will prepare and eat healthy, globally inspired recipes all while learning to cook in a fun, engaging and real-world way! Our Chefs will reinforce kitchen skills associated with our weekly recipes and each area of cooking termi- nology, foods and fun nutrition facts (even a few bad jokes!). We will orally practice our measurements, numbers, cooking utensils, fresh ingredients while cooking and so much more! Full recipes will be created each class with a our master Sticky Fingers Cooking Chef.
It takes just 30 seconds to make an impression. Will it be a good one? Introductions, handshakes, eye contact and body language are just a few of the social graces you will learn and keep in your portfolio for life. In addition, personal qualities such as telephone courtesies, acts of kindness, parties, invitations, importance of RSVP and writing a thank you note will be included. Learn the rules of table manners including the proper way to set the table, which fork to use and what to do if you drop it on the floor. Ms. Manners requests you be on time and dress in your best. Gentleman should wear a shirt, tie and sport coat. Young women should wear a dress/skirt or suitable pants outfit.
Tiny Treks is an innovative program for families who want to teach their children about the world through exploration of their natural surroundings. We believe children learn best through hands-on experiences which build self-esteem and encourage a love of nature. In this class activities will include short stimulating hikes in a variety of outdoor settings, music, art projects and games. Please bring a lunch and drink to the afternoon class. Circus Mojo is a circus arts program that teaches juggling, hat tricks, part ner acrobatics, plate spinning, tightwire walking, ball and stilt-walking, and character development through theatrical clowning. In this multidi mensional class, combining humor, grace, and athleticism, students are encouraged to conquer doubt and learn a variety of skills in a non-competitive environment. The last class will culminate in a finale performance, where every one will show their mojo! Materials fee - $25 of class, paid directly to the instructor. Extraordinary kids Staff
Enrich your child?s kindergarten year with an educational adventure! Extraordinary Kids emphasizes fun and creativity, challenges curious minds, enhances learning through hands-on exploration, encourages critical thinking and establishes a lifelong love of learning. Each session will explore several thematic units that will be integrated into all areas of the curriculum: science, math, language arts, social studies, geography and art. Kids will discover what happens to your food after you eat it (Human body), how to draw a picture using invisible ink and turn crystals into a bouncing ball (Monsters), how kids live in Africa (Africa), how to be a junior paleontologist and find fossils (Dinosaurs) and much more. Children must be 5 years of age by October 1, 2015. This program is for children that our in Kindergarten.
The curriculum and materials for Extraordinary Kids has been personally created and developed by directors Carol Modes. Modes worked for the Deerfield Public Schools for 14 years teaching kindergarten, second and fourth grade classes and as a gifted education instructor.

In addition, arts and crafts, songs, poems, drama and games will be incorporated to round out each day. Puppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment for socialization of puppies to a variety of people as well as dogs. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human and dog directed aggression, as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Other topics discussed include house training, mouthing, leadership, sitting and recall. This class is appropriate for puppies ages 2-4 months old. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinations prior to attending. If not, please plan to attend class without your dog until all vaccinations are administered.
Obedience 101 teaches the basics of obedience including sit, down, stand, recall (coming when called), stay and heel - everything your companion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and hand signals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Positive reinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewards or a small toy with you to class.

Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101. Additional levels of difficulty and distractions will be added. Dogs of any age may enroll provided they have a basic knowledge of basic obedience commands: sit, down, recall (coming when called) stay, and heel. Children training dogs must be at least 12 years old. Proper leashes and collars will be available for purchase in class. No retractable leashes allowed.

Rally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog and the handler. Rally is a sport in which all dogs are encouraged to participate. Purebred or mixed breed, every dog can learn the fundamentals for Rally. Dogs must have strong heeling skills to take this course. In rally an enthusiastic attitude and wagging tail are as important as precision. In fact, handlers are not only allowed to, but encouraged to positively reinforce their dogs during the competition with verbal praise, petting and even food rewards! Dogs and handlers should both appear to be enjoying the work and each other’s company.

Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. She has been recognized for several years as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator by the American Kennel Club, as well as a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers, an affiliate organization of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the first organization to offer a national standard for trainer certification.

8 weeks to 6 months. Learn how to help transition your dog from being a sweet puppy to the faithful dog you’ve always wanted. This class will teach you the reasoning behind a puppy’s thought process as well as the prevention of and response to unwanted behavior. You will learn the techniques of using body language to communicate to your puppy what is acceptable and what is not. Other essential puppy how-tos will be provided such as basic grooming, simple, commands and vet visits. Teaching your puppy should not be time-consuming or painful. This class will teach you the best ways to train your dog while still living your life. Beginning the socialization process during puppyhood ensures that your dog will more likely grow to be well adjusted and highly adaptable to other dogs, people and situations.
All Ages. You may have heard the expression, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” There is always hope of teaching your dog new tricks, it just requires forming some new habits. Learn the basic commands of sit, down, stay, heel and come. Solve some of the common issues or problems that you have with your dog. This class will teach you how to effectively train your dog while maintaining your lifestyle. If you begin to think like your dog and understand the proper communication, your dog will eventually become an extension of you.
All Ages. For dogs that are well-behaved off-leash. This class is mainly for fun and exercise with your dog. Mellow out your high-energy dog on walks with the extra workout techniques you will learn. Agility training can also help more insecure dogs build confidence through learning how to overcome things that might seem “scary” (i.e. obstacles, jumps, etc.). Not only is this class a great form of physical activity, it also builds trust between you and your dog as you are there to assure them through obstacles. Almost everything taught in the agility class can be easily translated to your daily walks.
With 25 years of dog training experience, Michael has witnessed and worked with almost every aspect in the field of dog behavior including competition obedience, agility, tracking, scent discrimination, police dogs, behavior modification, diabetic alert dogs and guide dog training. With a Bachelor’s Degree in the Applied Behavioral Sciences, Michael combines human and dog psyches to create a successful bond between the dog and its handler.
As an instructor with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Michael was involved with the training of Roselle, a yellow lab, who successfully traversed 78 flights to guide her handler to safety during the chaos of 9/11. As a member of the APDT, CPDT and NADRA, a certified Canine Good Citizen instructor, and a mentor for Animal Behavior College, Michael works with all breeds and issues.
You can often see Michael biking or roller blading with a dog or walking a large pack through the neighborhoods of the 60093 zip code. As a member of the WinnetkaNorthfield community Michael also gives dog safety talks to schools as well as Boy and Girl Scout troops.

Jenifer Thoem has been sculpting in clay and teaching for over 20 years. A native Georgian, she received a BFA in Ceramics from Georgia Southern University in 1994. She moved to Wilmette from Richmond, VA where she owned and operated The Creative Foundry, a ceramics production/teaching studio. Jenifer has experience teaching classes in both public and private schools, and Community Recreation Ceramic Centers in both Georgia and Virginia. Jenifer’s whimsical clay and found object sculptures can be found in many private collections around the U.S.
Jill Hurwitz has been throwing pots since 1973 and teaching ceramics since 1994. While earning her B.A. from Skidmore College in New York, she spent all her spare time in the pottery studio. Jill has a Master’s Degree in Teaching from the School for International Training in Vermont. After college, Jill studied pottery in Vermont, at Lill Street Studios in Chicago, at the Evanston Arts Center and the Park District in Highland Park.

Learn the foundations of contemporary fashion design. This course will teach you how to draw traditional fashion croquis following the nine head formula. In this adult sewing class, you’ll learn the basics of clothing patterns and production. You will have the opportunity to brushup on hand stitches and review the sewing machine. Janet Lubetkin: Elementary music teacher Janet Lubetkin has been playing musical instruments since she was 5 years old. After working in business and studying piano for twenty years, she returned to school and became an elementary music teacher. Wanting to strum and sing, she studied guitar and taught herself to play ukulele. She has been teaching general music and ukulele to fourth and fifth grade students at Lincoln Elementary School in Highland Park for ten years. Her students have performed at Highland Park library and other community events. Janet earned a B.A. from Oberlin College, an M.M. from Northwestern University and an M.A.T. from National-Louis University.

Celebrate your child’s love of nature and growing independence through activities that focus on the seasons of the year. Classes are designed to build attention span, self-expression, and language development. Total Sports not only teaches children the basic skills of playing a particular sport, it also teaches them skills needed to work with one another as teammates, and to accept each individual as a valuable player. Some of the sports taught and played include soccer, kickball, football, t-ball, floor hockey, basketball and more.
Parents are an integral part of helping their tots develop basic sports movement and motor skills. Motor skills activities focus on hand/eye and hand/foot coordination. Sports equipment and instruction are provided to help guide your child through an introduction to organized sports.
Hockey fundamentals as well as game strategy, teamwork, sportsmanship and safety will be stressed each week. Players will learn key concepts and rules as well as valued fundamentals to allow them to get a jump start on the competition before Hockey Season kicks off. Participants will be free to wear shin guards and gloves however these items are not required.
The JSA’s Premier level is the top level of classes for your young soccer star. In this class, players develop a close familiarity with the ball and learn the importance of always having it under control. By the end of class your child will learn about landing on their shooting foot, precision shots vs. power shots, trapping the ball in the air and field awareness.
Hot Shots Sports has partnered with Northshore Rugby to bring a fun, non-contact Rugby class to Winnetka! Players will learn all the fundamentals and rules of one of the world?s fastest growing sports. Participants will engage in drills, interactive skill building, and games in a fun and safe environment.
Young children develop motor skills while having fun running and kicking just like the big kids! Parents and tots work together in this class to learn the basics of soccer. Dribbling, passing, shooting and kicking will all be emphasized. A variety of activities designed around the game of soccer will be played each week.

Little Legends Soccer Academy presents its newest program in town: Born To Kick. It is a unique program designed to meet a child?s mental and physical development needs. Soccer is used as a vehicle to emphasize/introduce visual learning at a young age. The program is offered to toddlers from 24 months to 35 months old. Parental participation is mandatory and very important for the outcome of this program. Born To Kick creates the opportunity for children to experience body awareness, increase their vocabulary, learn about numbers, shapes, forms, textures, colors and explore their surroundings in a safe environment.

Midwest Fencing Academy Staff
The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. This has led many to describe the sport as “physical chess.” Fencing also teaches balance and discipline and even more than this, it’s fun! This class is for those new to fencing or those who would like to work on the basic skills. This class will cover basic rules, etiquette, basic footwork, attacks and defenses. Classes will consist of warm up time, footwork time, group lesson and bouting. All equipment is provided.
These 45 minute clinics are an introduction to basic basketball for the beginner. Classes will provide a comfortable and fun group environment as participants learn the fundamentals of the sport with an emphasis on dribbling and ball handling. 3Point’s engaging staff will em phasize activities that help develop basic motor skills, hand-eye coordination and following directions. If you have a first through third grade boy or girl interested in playing basketball against other area players without the hassle of traveling to a different location for every game, this program is for them. Participants will learn fundamental skills through weekly practice and games. Adult volunteers coach all teams. First grade games will have youth size basketballs and eight foot basketball rims. Second grade will have youth size basketballs and 9 foot basketball rims. Third grade games will have adult size basketballs, 10 foot basketball rims, full court play and score will be kept. All games will have staff referees and timekeepers. All participants will receive a team t-shirt and commemorative basketball.
1. Teams will be established according to school (Crow Island, Greeley, Hubbard Woods, Sacred Heart, Faith Hope, North Shore Country Day and more), there will be no evaluation. When filling out your registration form please remember to insert your child/children’s school. Otherwise placement on a particular school team cannot be guaranteed. If there are more than 10 children from a school, multiple teams will be formed. If there are too few children from any one school, children will be placed on a team according to village of residence. Due to the number of children in this program requests will not be taken
2. Each team will have a one hour practice during the week. Time, assigned at a later date, will be between Monday and Friday, 5:00-8:00 p.m. There will be two weeks of practice before the first game.

Traditional Karate is a martial art which emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of total body dynamics and mental discipline. Students will constantly strive for technical excellence and enhancement of ones character. The following items are optional and will incur additional costs: uniforms, belt tests and tournaments. Belt Ranking System: There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the white belt rank (eleventh kyu). Students must fulfill certain requirements under normal practice conditions and in a test environment to secure progressive promotions up to and including the black belt (dan) levels. When a student has acquired a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Karate, he or she can be promoted to the rank of first-degree black belt

Frank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the Traditional Karate Program for the Winnetka Community House in 1989. He has trained in Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articles in the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on local and national television programs.
Ron Stein has trained in karate since 1981. His karate experience extends to Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. He has been with the Winnetka Community House Karate Program since 1994.

Taekwondo is a 2000 year old martial art offering a variety of benefits for people of all ages and physical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self esteem, achieve lifelong physical fitness and learn self-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G. Master Ki Hong Kim (Ninth Dan Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters). A $45 uniform fee is required at the first class. Tai Chi is a low-impact martial art developed to improve circulation, tone muscles, increase flexibility, improve posture, enhance balance and induce relaxation. Often Tai Chi is studied for its health benefits but this art also has practical and calming benefits for daily life as well. Tai Chi is used by martial arts practitioners to enhance the study of the other art forms. Tai Chi class on Tuesdays covers cultivation of mind, body and spirit by performing a series of Tai Chi and Qi Gong movements and postures as a synchronized group meditation. Qi Gong is the Chinese philosophy and practice of aligning breath, physical activity and awareness for mental, spiritual and physical health. Tai Chi class on Thursdays covers principle and advance techniques of Yang style Tai Chi. Our group fitness programs offer a wide variety of structured fitness activities to meet your personal goals. Our instructors are prepared to inspire and motivate you to change or continue healthy fitness-related behaviors. Class selection and times differ throughout the year. Check the group fitness schedule for availability, changes and current sessions.
All Group X plans are open to both members and non-members ages 14 years and older. Plans are available in punch card denominations of 10, 20, 30, or unlimited year. Walk-ins are always welcome. Plans expire one year from the date of purchase. Plans may not be transferred or shared. Refunds are not available. Purchase your plan at the Winnetka Community House Fitness Centre.

The Junior League of Evanston-North Shore, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
Each year, League members commit thousands of volunteer hours to improving our community. In particular, the focus of our organization is on Advancing Employment and Supporting Families for those in need across Chicago’s North Suburbs.
Founded in 1924 as the Junior League of Evanston, JLE-NS now has approximately 350 Active and Sustaining members. We reach out to all women regardless of age, race, religion, ethnic or national origin who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.
The many important community projects that we support are made possible through fundraising events like our Designer Kitchens of the North Shore Kitchen Tour and Trivia Night, and our award-winning cookbook “It’s A Shore Thing”. In addition, for the past 75 years we have operated our Thrift House, a resale shop located at 920 Chicago Avenue in Evanston.

Founded in 1924, the North Shore Art League is a non-profit organization offering art classes for adults and children. As the only art center located in Winnetka, the NSAL offers art education, lectures, workshops, field trips, gallery shows and special art events to the entire North Shore community. A summer juried art fair, Art in the Village, takes place on the streets of Winnetka in June.
Located on the 2nd floor of the Community House, classes are held in an historic, professional studio featuring skylights and a stone fireplace as well as a well-equipped print room facility. Classes in drawing, painting (oil, acrylic, and watercolor), pastels, etching, printmaking, figure study, and more are taught by a distinguished faculty-offering a unique, creative experience.
League members may exhibit at the annual Members’ Show and throughout the year in NSAL gallery space within the Community House. Membership benefits also include generous discounts at various art supply stores in the area and a newsletter/brochure subscription.

Open Communities is a leading voice for housing, economic and social justice in north suburban Chicago, working to promote inclusive communities that are welcoming to all. Founded in 1972, Open Communities spearheads the Welcome Movement, a campaign designed to motivate residents to get involved in making the northern suburbs inclusive places to live, work and play.

A nationally accredited preschool for children ages 3-5, offering indoor and outdoor activities in a stimulating environment in which physical, social, intellectual and emotional growth is encouraged. Learning materials encourage creativity, promote cognitive growth and develop manipulative skills. The school also includes an extended day program and “Lunch Bunch” program. WCNS’s extended day program, Splendid Day, is an enriching afternoon for children ages three to six years. The children receive a nourishing hot lunch and plenty of opportunity for stimulating indoor and outdoor play activities. A child may register for one to five days per week. The Winnetka Youth Organization, known as “The YO” by those who frequent the space, is a non-profit teen drop in center located in the basement of the Winnetka Community House. We have been around since 1969, and serve as the only youth organization of its kind in Winnetka. Each year, the YO provides services upwards of 1000 individual adolescents from this community. The mission of the Winnetka Youth Organization is to foster individual development in junior high and high school youth on the North Shore by providing adult-to-youth mentoring, prevention services, and opportunities for leadership, citizenship, and education within a safe, informal environment. Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a powerful body and mind exercise system. It contains five sets of exercises that work on the energy circulation of the body. Winnetka children’s hour
The Winnetka Children’s Hour, a non-profit organization, has been providing live, original theatre performances for area families since 1932. Each year, The Winnetka Children’s Hour presents an original musical comedy written by board members and performed by local children, ages 4-14. The show debuts the first week of February, with the 2016 performances scheduled for Thursday, February 4 and Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 6, at 10:30 a.m. Now beginning its 84th year, Winnetka Children’s Hour has a legacy of involving local children in performances and providing a non-competitive, “low-key” and fun atmosphere for them. Families also actively participate in every aspect of the production. Proceeds from ticket sales support the Winnetka Children’s Hour Outreach program, which funds enrichment for school children who do not get many opportunities to see live theatre and creative programming. In addition, cast members each year travel to Learn Charter School in Chicago, where they teach dances from the show and other theatrical techniques. It’s a wonderful opportunity for all of the children to bond through the arts. Membership information
Early registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done via the web at winnetkacommunityhouse.org, fax or in person at Winnetka Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a spot in a class. All family members in your household are eligible for membership benefits. When registering for membership, just list your family members, and they will be included for the program registration benefits automatically when registering for classes.
Members receive a notice about one month prior to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year.
Refunds for memberships will not be available.

cancellation of classes
Prior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.
refund policy
Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insufficient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.
prorated policy
Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.
religious holidays
Winnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.
• Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times.
• Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our Executive Director.
• Winnetka Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fund raising events, our annual campaign, and donations. Winnetka Community House is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in the safest manner possible, and holds the safety of the participants in the highest possible regard. Participants and parents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities. Winnetka Community House continually strives to reduce such risks, and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions which have been designed to protect the participants’ safety. Please recognize that Winnetka Community House does not carry medical accident insurance for injuries sustained in its programs. The cost of such would make program fees prohibitive. Therefore, each person registering himself\herself or a family member for a recreation program/activity should review his/her own health insurance policy for coverage. It must be noted that the absence of health insurance coverage does not make Winnetka Community House automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses.
