OUR MISSION

Dear Friends,
Last fiscal year was extraordinary.
We had one of the most successful fall sessions in recent history, with over 1,000 people enrolled in a variety of programs. From basketball to nerf battles, from ballet to hip hop to musical theatre, from sewing to dog obedience to early childhood education – our engaging and enriching programs continued to be a cornerstone of this community.
We also increased opportunities for people to achieve their health and fitness goals by updating our group exercise offerings and adding two inspiring personal trainers, expanding our fitness team’s collective expertise.
Carrying on with our longtime tradition, the Community House hosted gatherings in times of joy and sorrow, bringing people together for memorial services and celebrating weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, reunions, and community events in our beautiful garden and historic building.
And then in March, COVID-19 hit. With the statewide stay-at-home order, the Community House was forced to close its doors for the first time since its rebuilding after a fire in 1930. From mid-March to the end of May, the staff team shifted most of our programs to a virtual format, stayed in touch with the community, and planned for the day we would be able to welcome everyone back.
I’ll never forget those first few days of June, when we were finally able to reopen. Nothing felt the same: we kept class sizes small, limited access to the fitness center, moved as many of our activities outdoors as we could, reset our HVAC systems for the maximum exchange of indoor and outdoor air – and of course, implemented strict policies for wearing masks and distancing from others. But it was thrilling to have small groups of people together again, learning, and growing, and connecting with one another.
As we closed Fiscal Year 2020, we knew we were entering a time unlike any other in this organization’s history. We knew we would have to be more creative and flexible than ever before, and today, we continue to rise to that challenge, constantly adapting to the latest safety guidelines and bringing people together in new and different ways.
For over 100 years, the Community House has been a place for people to enrich their lives through meaningful experiences and connection with others. After the months of relative isolation we have all experienced, it’s clear that our mission is more important than ever.
You are part of that mission. Whether you are involved as a donor, board member, volunteer, program or fitness participant, or staff member… thank you for sustaining this organization and ensuring its future.

FOSTERING COMMUNITY & CONNECTION
Fall and Winter Programs Grow, Events Shine
Hoops4Health held popular summer camps, skills classes, and 3-on-3 leagues in our gymnasium, helping the next generation of basketball players sharpen their skills.
Taekwondo classes continued their growth trend, expanding 20% over last year.
Expanded dog obedience classes helped more families train their furry best friends, with 80% growth in registered participants.
Our newly renovated music studio allowed us to greatly expand our private music lessons to include piano, guitar, drum, and voice lessons.
Our School of Dance enrolled over 100 students in ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, and musical theatre dance programs, and staged its annual Nutcracker Gems show for enthusiastic audiences in December.
Skyline Theatre Company enrolled over 400 participants (an all-time high!), preschool through 5th grade, for their first production of Frozen.
Children’s Theatre of Winnetka was voted Best Children’s Theater in the Suburbs by the readers of Better magazine (formerly Make it Better) for the third year in a row.
Events like Matt Wilhelm’s BMX Show, Andy Head’s Wonderful Wacky Juggler show, a Big Halloween Balloon Show with Smarty Pants, Little Miss Ann’s upbeat, interactive kids’ concert, American Eagle Productions’ staging of The Jungle Book, and our own Family Bingo Night drew over 560 community members for engaging family fun!
Iconic events like the Antiques+Modernism Show, Santa’s Breakfast, and Wine & Beer Tasting drew nearly 3,000 people and raised needed funds to support our programs.

The Pandemic Begins
With the stay-at-home order as the COVID-19 pandemic surged in March, the Community House closed its doors for the first time in 90 years. Many spring programs that were in progress when the pandemic hit were completed virtually, while our building was deep cleaned and preparations were made to safely re-open.
Weekly fitness challenges, social media posts, and reflections on community were shared to keep our community engaged and connected when we couldn’t physically come together. We welcomed everyone back in June – on a much smaller scale – with innovative program adaptations and strict safety protocols in place. Our experience with this pandemic was just beginning, but it was a moment of joy to have at least a part of our community together again!
