Founded in 1911, the Community House is a non-profit organization offering sports, educational, and arts programming for children and adults. The historic building features a tness center, theater, rental space, and garden. As an independent 501(c)(3) we receive no tax dollars and rely on donations, memberships, and program fees to sustain our organization. The Community House is proud to have served generations of Winnetka residents and North Shore families.

Members and Non-Members from Winnetka and surrounding communities are welcome to participate in any of our classes, programs, lectures, and events.

Formed in 1976, The Woman’s Board supports our mission by contributing critical funds to our operating budget each year through its fundraising efforts. Winter Break: Basketball Camp

Our Winter Break Camp will hit on all facets of the game, including guard/post development, defense, plyometrics, hand-eye coordination, footwork, dribbling, basketball cuts, screen and roll situations, learning the art of the jumpshot, game situations, and building a basketball IQ so players can make quick, smart decisions on the court. The Hoops4Health staff can’t wait to share their knowledge of the game over the holidays!

Meet Your Fitness Center Trainers!

Bob Davis

Bob has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their tness goals since 2001. Bob enjoys working with seniors and teens as well as those with special needs including rehabilitation. Helping those in the gym complements Bob’s career in sports media that has taken him to multiple NFL Superbowls, and the NCAA Basketball Final Four. Bob is certi ed through the International Sports Science Association.

Dolores Ohlwein

Dolores has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their tness goals since 1991. She enjoys helping clients maintain a healthy lifestyle by using: functional training, core/balance exercises, weight training, weight bearing exercises, and stretching. She is certi ed through the Idea International Association of Fitness Professionals with an emphasis in exercise and aging.

Chris Treiber

Chris has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their tness goals since 1996. His specializations are training for strength, functional movement, balance, and older adult populations. Chris is certi ed through the American Council on Exercise, the Functional Aging Institute (Functional Aging Specialist) and the Gray Institute (Applied Functional Science).

Edwin Ventura

Edwin is a NASM certi ed personal trainer as well as a USA licensed Boxing Coach. He grew up in Waukegan playing soccer for 15 years before switching to boxing for the last 6 years. He enjoys training a wide range of clients for performance, general health, and weight loss and is currently continuing his education to include a Performance Enhancement Specialty, which will enable him to help athletes reach their full conditioning potential.

Titan Crusaders

Fencing

The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. This has led many to describe the sport as “physical chess.” Fencing also teaches balance and discipline and even more than this, it’s fun! This class is for those new to fencing or those who would like to work on the basic skills. This class will cover basic rules, etiquette, basic footwork, attacks and defenses. Classes will consist of warm up time, footwork time, group lesson and bouting. All equipment is provided.

NOTE: Due to the personal nature of the equipment used for fencing, students will be issued a mask and a glove from Midwest Fencing Club during the rst class. Students will be responsible for this equipment for the duration of the session, taking it home and bringing it back for each class. Each fencer will be required to pay a $150 equipment deposit directly to Midwest Fencing Academy (cash or check) on the rst day, which will be returned when the equipment is turned in at the end of the session.

Karate emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of body dynamics and mental discipline. Celeste is an early childhood movement, music, and yoga teacher at the Community House, and has taught throughout the North Shore for over 35 years. She has worked with the Old Town School of Folk Music, National-Louis University and Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest. A graduate of Loyola Academy, Dan is a talented multi-instrumentalist and popular teacher of piano, violin, guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, percussion, and voice at the Community House. Ola brings over 21 years of preschool experience to the Community House, previously teaching toddlers through junior kindergarteners at Winnetka Public Nursery School. She believes that play is the foundation for all learning, helping children become curious, explore and discover new things, and build relationships with others!

Elyse Ferdinand

Elyse previously taught preschool at Adler Schools in Chicago – but has been teaching various early childhood classes here at the Community House for over 25 years! She loves seeing children learn and grow through different activities each day.

Big Sky Classes Bring soft treats, 6’ leash (no retractable/expandable), and clean-up bags to each class. Please do not wear sandals without a back strap. Dog Obedience Puppy

Puppy Class provides a positive environment for socialization of puppies and people alike! Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human-directed aggression and dog-ondog aggression, as well as anxiety and fear-based behavior problems. Additional topics covered are house training, mouthing, barking, and preventing behavior problems. Obedience behaviors of sit, coming when called, and walking on a leash will be introduced. Gwendolyn Britt Ballet and Fantasy Dance

Gwendolyn has been teaching ballet and Fantasy Dance classes at the Community House for over 20 years. Her students learn proper ballet technique in an encouraging atmosphere. As a performer, Gwendolyn danced for the Lynda Martha Dance Company. She is a certi ed teacher with the Cecchetti Council of America. Gwendolyn is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Music with a BS in Ballet Education.

E. Marc Nevins Adult Ballet

Marc is a dancer with nearly 20 years of performing experience including appearances with American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West, and Evanston Concert Ballet. Marc studied at the University of Utah, Interlochen Arts Academy, School of American Ballet in New York, and with Maria Tallchief in Chicago.

Kateryna Suvorova Hip Hop

Kateryna has been teaching Hip Hop since 2019 and has worked with all ages and levels! She loves helping her students to build con dence and enjoy the process of trying and learning new things.

Aaron Umsted Intermediate Theatre Jazz

Aaron is the Artistic Director of Children’s Theatre of Winnetka. His local theatre credits include productions with the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Northwestern University, Paramount Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, and Marriott Theatre. He has also toured North America in the Broadway companies of A Chorus Line, Disney’s Mary Poppins, and Anything Goes. Aaron holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Oklahoma, and a M.Ed. in Theatre Pedagogy from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Mallory Mulligan Wendt Irish Dance

Mallory has had an active dance career while winning international dance competitions. She has a passion for teaching dance to children and is a registered T.C.R.G. through the An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha.

A graduate of Loyola Academy, Dan is a talented multi-instrumentalist and popular teacher of piano, violin, guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, percussion, and voice at the Community House. Dan is the founder of Music ‘n’ Me and Top Note Music Academy. A rm believer that music should be fun, Dan enjoys sharing his love of music with his students. He is a graduate of USC with a degree in music.

Brandon Seyferth

Brandon is a teacher of guitar at the Community House who tailors his lessons to the interests and goals of his students while stressing good technique and the fundamentals. He has written, performed, and recorded songs with such notable names as Jackson Browne, Victor DeLorenzo, Eric McFadden, and Jimmy Chamberlin. Brandon is currently director at the Glencoe Academy of Music.

Multi-instrumental teacher Dan Rosa offers instruction on a number of different instruments. Regardless of age or skill level, Teacher Dan lays out a strong musical foundation for his students — teaching music theory as well as the fundamentals. His unique approach is structured entirely around the student’s needs. Beginner and advanced students welcome! Each lesson is 30 minutes. Payment is made directly to Dan Rosa. Fee must be paid 48 hours in advance of the rst music lesson.

Children’s Theatre of Winnetka (CTW)

Formed in 1974, Children’s Theatre of Winnetka (CTW) is an award-winning, volunteer organization dedicated to promoting theatrical experiences for children in Grades 4-8 who reside or attend school in New Trier Township. Children, under adult supervision, learn all aspects of theatre production from stage management to performance. Students may participate both onstage or backstage in two productions annually in the fall and spring.

About Skyline Children’s Theater is a mainstay at the Community House and is proud to teach children of all levels the fundamentals of acting. Jacqui Siegel, drama teacher and Erica Zuhr, elementary school teacher are the co-owners of Skyline Children’s Theater. Mrs. Siegel and Mrs. Zuhr have performed in and directed numerous plays throughout the Chicagoland area. Mrs. Siegel has worked with world-renowned casting directors in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Together they bring their talents to Skyline Children’s Theater, excited to share their passion for the performing arts with the community.

Skyline Children’s Theater Policies No make-up classes will be offered. Please help your child practice and memorize at home so your actor feels con dent on stage. Please be prompt in arrival and dismissal times. All rehearsals are closed (no parents or guests watching). Actors are required to bring their scripts to every rehearsal. The Historic Garden is the perfect spot for your perfect day! This hidden outdoor gem can accommodate 200 guests for a theater style ceremony and 150 for a seated dinner, with plenty of room for your rst dance under the stars.

The Garden Room accommodates 250 people theater style or 200 with tables and chairs. This space can also be divided into two separate rooms. Special features include natural light from south-facing windows, ne woodwork, variable lighting con gurations, and a dance oor with a view of the garden.

La Petite École de Chicago, a private, French language immersion school founded in 2015, with its rst campus in Hyde Park has a second campus at the Community House. The school serves families with children age 3 and above and offers a year-round, in-person, preschool to 6th grade curriculum based on the French national curriculum. The school also offers an online option for families with one or more individuals who cannot send children to school due to pre-existing conditions. Classes never exceed 10 students per teacher. Its teaching staff in Winnetka have a total of 52 years of experience.

Registration Information

HOW TO REGISTER Member registration opens November 20 and will be processed on a rst come, rst served basis. Non-member registration opens November 27. Registration received through the mail or in person will be processed by 5 pm the next business day. The best way to ensure that your registration is processed immediately is by registering online at mycommunityhouse.org.

PRORATED POLICY Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.

CANCELLATION OF CLASSES Register early! Prior to the start of any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is suf cient to hold the class. Do not wait until the day of the rst class to register or you may nd the class has been canceled due to low enrollment.

REFUND POLICY Full refunds will be issued for classes that are cancelled due to insuf cient registration. Other refunds, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received ve full business days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings, or special events will be given.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS

The Community House intends to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There are times, however, when weather, road conditions, or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In order to provide employees and patrons with a safe and secure environment in which to work and play, the Community House reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program when deemed necessary.

A summer juried art fair, Art in the Village, takes place in Hubbard Woods Park — right in the middle of the Hubbard Woods Design District and along bustling Green Bay Road in June. Located for over 90 years on the second oor of the Community House, classes are held in an historic, professional art studio featuring skylights and a large stone replace as well as a well-equipped print room facility. Classes in drawing, painting (oil, acrylic, and watercolor), pastels, etching, printmaking, gure study, encaustic and more are taught by a distinguished faculty–offering a unique, creative experience. League members may exhibit at the annual Members’ Show and throughout the year in NSAL gallery space within the Community House. Membership bene ts also include generous discounts at various art supply stores in the area and an eblast/brochure subscription.

WCNS is a nationally accredited preschool for children ages 2-4, offering indoor and outdoor activities in a stimulating environment in which physical, social, intellectual and emotional growth is encouraged. WOMEN’S EXCHANGE

Women’s Exchange is a unique community of women (and sometimes men) committed to growth and authentic connection, be it through book discussions, building one’s nancial skills, looking at life’s education, learning about health and wellness, writing together, creating together, walking together, learning and discerning, moving through transitions or simply making a change with a new thought or idea. Each year, for nearly four decades, Women’s Exchange hosts over 100 workshops and classes and special events, all where conversations matter. Join in; discover something new for yourself and/or about yourself.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If School District 36 cancels classes for the entire day, all of the Community House children’s programs (including Fitness Center childcare) starting before noon will be canceled. Decisions on all adult programs and children’s programs starting after noon will be made on a case-by-case basis. Please check mycommunityhouse.org for details on class cancellations.

RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS

The Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the fee for the date missed.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times. The Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see a staff member. The Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fundraising events, our annual campaign, and donations.
