In addition to classes, programs and special events for every member of the family, WCH has a Children’s Garden, full service Fitness Centre, and a full gymnasium available to users. Theater and dance productions are held year-round in historic Matz Hall thanks to groups like Children’s Theatre of Winnetka, Winnetka Children’s Hour and Village Follies.
The facility also plays host to weddings, business meetings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, as well as housing some of the North Shore’s key non-profit organizations such as North Shore Art League, Winnetka Community Nursery School, Junior League of Evanston - North Shore, Open Communities and Winnetka Youth Organization.

Thank you to our patrons who keep coming back to enjoy our programs and facilities; our funders who fuel our mission; our community partners who we turn to for collaboration; but most importantly, thank you for taking an interest in what Winnetka Community House has done in FY 2014-15, and will continue to do, to create memories and enrich lives.
The generosity of so many make Winnetka Community House the thriving institution it is today. A total of $1,236,506 was raised through the Annual Fund, Contributions to Board Designated Funds, Restricted Gifts, Second Century Campaign, Governors’ Ball, Village Follies, Children’s Theatre of Winnetka, Antiques + Modernism Winnetka Show, Breakfast with Santa and the Wine and Beer Tasting.
Particularly noteworthy, WCH celebrated the opening of the Children’s Garden at the close
of the fiscal year. Throughout this report, we have given you just a glimpse of what takes place at WCH on an annual basis. We strive to make our programs and events enticing and relevant to the community’s current needs. With your help, we will continue to thrive well into the future.

Dear Friends, I would like to personally express my deepest gratitude to all of the benefactors and patrons of Winnetka Community House for their continuous support. It was an honor for me to serve as Chair of the Board of Governors during the 2014-2015 fiscal year. In addition, I found it extremely heartwarming to have the opportunity to meet so many of the individuals responsible for the success of this institution over the years at the variety of events we shared. The growth and accomplishments of WCH are true testaments to the community’s affection for this institution.
Although it has been said numerous times, it still amazes me to know that so many still do not know that Winnetka Community House receives no tax support . That is why it is so critical to our efforts to raise private funding for our operating budget.
This amount represents 24.8% of the gross revenues. Almost one quarter of our gross revenues comes from fundraising. Without your support, we could not remain one of the area’s premier destinations for recreational, cultural, educational and social activities.
All that happens at WCH is only possible because of the dedicated staff, energetic volunteers, loyal patrons and generous donors that truly understand the importance of our mission. Once again on behalf of the entire community, thank you for your gifts of time, talent and treasure.

Through donations of time and resources, friends and staff of Winnetka Community House have helped strengthen the institution’s foundation and enriched the lives of others. At the close of the year, $265,417 were received from over 400 donors. Many thanks and gratitude to the Board of Governors, Woman’s Board, and all who participated.
A total of $544,027 was received in restricted gifts to support programs and major gift initiative projects of WCH. They document not only specific knowledge of special facets of the institution’s operations, but also the dedication and commitment of donors who have made these gifts in consultation with the Director of Institutional Advancement and the Executive Director.
Winnetka Community House held its second annual Governors’ Ball on Saturday, April 11, 2015 and was proud to salute longtime Winnetka residents Jackie and Bill Ieuter with its 2015 Distinguished Service Award.
One hundred thirteen guests attended the black-tie evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres,
dinner, dancing and a silent and live auction. Over $35,000 were raised through ticket sales, auctions and donations.
Special thanks to Co-Chairs Raheela Gill Anwar, Amy Pope Brock, Joan Evanich, Nan Greenough, Carol Hansen and Pam Westin for all of their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Winnetka Community House received $2,375 in honor or memory of loved ones. These gifts, often directed toward the general unrestricted fund, can also be a good starting point for a memorial or honorary gift, endowed scholarship or for the purchase of a special gift for the facility.
In addition, Children’s Theatre of Winnetka and Village Follies provided $41,998 in support for our theater productions and programs, and the needs of Matz Hall, while $250,000 was donated for Board Designated Funds, and $35,000 was raised by the Governors’ Ball.

Proceeds are used to fund needs throughout the Community House, including capital purchases and care and maintenance of the Garden Under the Arches. The 2014-2015 Woman’s Board House Productions were a huge success thanks to the hard work of the committee. Kicking off the holiday season, over 400 children and parents visited Winnetka Community House for Breakfast with Santa. In March, over 200 guests attended WCH’s Wine
and Beer Tasting event. Patrons were able to taste varieties of flavorful, well-priced wines, while learning secrets of the trade.
In addition to individual supporters, annual Woman’s Board events were sponsored in part by First Bank & Trust and The International House of Wine and Cheese.
Thanks to the Woman’s Board, Winnetka Community House netted over $100,000 from these events during the 2014-2015 fiscal year. We are extremely grateful for their dedication, generosity, time, and talent.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2015 over 50 guests attended the Life Members Society Reception at Winnetka Community House. Attendees were welcomed by Board of Governors Chair Joan Evanich. The Class of 2015 inductees were Blakely and Harvey Bundy, Babs and John Ellwood and Cindy and Mark Fuller.
The position of Life Members was created to recognize and honor Endowment Board, Board of Governors and Woman’s Board members who, over the years, have given unusually outstanding leadership, service, and support to Winnetka Community House. Life Members have taken an active part in the affairs of Winnetka Community House and continue to maintain involvement in an ex-officio capacity.

youth Organization (W yO) and the students in Interact Club at New Trier High School put together the Band Together Concert. This teen-organized music event benefits local charities. This year all proceeds went towards Operation Warm, which provides new winter coats to needy children in the Chicagoland area.

Three local teen bands played with over 40 teens in attendance. The talented lineup of student artists included Jordan Xidas, Atlas Stone, Mac Guy, and The Holy Rollers. The teen artists who performed, students in the Interact Club, and those who attended the event made a difference in the lives of Chicago area children this winter.

The Winnetka Youth Organization, located in the basement of Winnetka Community House, regularly hosts concerts and other music programs open to the area’s young people. The WYO also provides youth-driven leadership and social service opportunities. The WYO serves over 1,000 teens a year and continues to be the only youth-serving agency of its kind in Winnetka. Jackie and Bill are a true-life Winnetka Community House love story. They met at a Village Follies rehearsal in 1997. Bill saw Jackie dance and worked through the routine until he became her dance partner. Two years later, they had their first date at Del Rio in Highwood.
Jackie moved here with her family from Saudi Arabia in 1987, knowing no one. The Community House seemed welcoming. She joined Pam Phillips’ class. Her children auditioned for the Main Show, where the directors figured out that, as a professional dancer, Jackie could choreograph the show. Jackie auditioned for “My One and Only” and was hired based on having taught belly
dancing to Saudi women. She choreographed the Casbah scene, became lead belly dancer and hasn’t stopped performing since!
Bill Ieuter’s mom taught him to dance. He learned that this skill had favorable consequences. At the Community House: Bill put in 41 years for the Village Follies, appeared in Community Theater and Winnetka Theater – and took his first tap lessons at age 50. He joined the Board of Governors in 1985, co-chaired the 75th Anniversary, and has spent years as insurance advisor and broker keeping the building - and everyone in it – safe. Bill is a man of passion – for Broadway musicals (he and Jackie have produced major musicals in their living room for Talent Limited, their play-reading group), the church choir, Illini football, the Bears, gourmet cooking and Elvis.
Winnetka Community House is nothing without its participants, volunteers and donors. Jackie and Bill are all three – and we thank them for the joy they have brought to our stage and to the halls of the building.
Through the generosity of private donors, Winnetka Community House, in partnership with The Alliance for Early Childhood, Kohl Children’s Museum, Chicago Botanic Garden, The Organic Gardener and other local organizations, dedicated the Children’s Garden on Sunday, June 7, 2015 with a ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration party. Younger guests enjoyed face painting, arts & crafts and a Monarch Butterfly release.
The Garden, located on the southwest side of the Community House and adjacent to the Garden Under the Arches, will provide an enlightening and educational experience for the young and the young at heart who enjoy nature and gardening.
Specifically, the garden offers green space, planting beds, vegetables growing, a play area and an outdoor pergola area where children can gather for learning and much more. It is our hope that hundreds of youngsters will garden in the Children’s Garden every year.
Two new programs, Summer Family Planting Day, and Build Your Own Monarch Butterfly Incubator, were added to our Enrichment and Education curriculum. In addition, WCH classes using the Children’s Garden this past summer and fall included:

Children’s Theatre of Winnetka alum
Josh Hoffman had a chance to catch up with a few of the guys from last year’s fall production of Mary p oppins and asked what they enjoyed about being in the shows.
“When many boys hear about acting or musicals, they immediately dismiss it as something they wouldn’t like,” said Josh. “I had the opportunity to talk to a few of the boys in the cast about their experience at CTW, and why they decided to get involved in theater. Most CTW productions are double cast, giving the opportunity for many children to participate in the productions. The following is an interview with three of the leads from Mary poppins: James, Liam, and Andrew.”
Q: What has your experience at CTW been like?
James: “Everyone here is very professional, but we also have a lot of fun. I have learned a lot in just the short time I’ve been in this show, and I have made so many great friends.”
Liam: “People have been very welcoming, since I’m new here. We all have a blast together, and everyone just wants to see each other improve.”
Q: What was your favorite part of m ary Poppins?
Andrew: “Learning the opening number was my favorite part of the show, because it is the first time the audience sees us. We all had to work hard to make sure it was very good.”
James: “Being able to fly (in the role of Bert in Mary Poppins) has been the most amazing part of the whole experience to me. This is one of the only places around here that would be able to offer that, and it makes the show a whole lot better and more

“I started out doing plays at my school, and realized that I loved entertaining people. I decided it might be fun to continue doing it. That’s when I found CTW.”

Over the years, one of CTW’s greatest sources of pride has been the “alums” - many go on to shine in acting, singing, dancing, and tech at new Trier, college and, yes, bROADWAy and HOLLyWOOD. Many come back in their high school years to help teach dance steps and to stage musical numbers for us.

Bid Farewell to Summer with
Winnetka Community House joined together with 20 other local organizations to finish out summer with a fun event for the whole community on Saturday, August 24, 2014.
Nearly 400 attendees enjoyed the Last Blast of Summer that featured arts and crafts activities provided by non-profits, carnival games, a 24-foot climbing wall, inflatables, pony rides, a petting zoo and more. Food and drinks were also sold at the event by The Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfield. Special thanks to lead donors, North Shore Dentistry for Children, Morgan Stanley and Secure Futures.
During the event, MetLife’s Spokestoon Snoopy, Elliebee the Clown, Winnetka Police and Fire departments were entertaining the visitors along with live performances by Children’s Theatre of Winnetka, Village Follies, Thalia Schusteff, and Jordan Xidas.

Founded in 1924, the League remains dedicated to enriching the communities it serves through art education and exhibitions. NSAL hosted its first art show in 1925, and has continued to do so for over 90 years. Through the years, NSAL has sponsored nationally known exhibits for artists such as: the Old Orchard Art Fair, New Horizons, a National Craft Festival, the popular Members’ Art Show, Art on the Plaza and “inchworkssmall works, small gems.”
February 2016, NSAL will be hosting its second annual exhibit of works all based on the kitchen, “View: The Kitchen Table.” Pieces will depict artist’s own kitchens, tables from their memories, still lifes in a kitchen or anything kitchen related. The artists’ creativity is apparent in the works that are in the show.
All of the League’s classes are conducted at Winnetka Community House. The main studio features a 60 foot skylight – giving artists the famous north light exposure. NSAL’s premiere print program offers art classes for adults and teens in one of the most classic printmaking studios on the North Shore. “The talented faculty members continue to inspire 1,000 plus students annually,” said NSAL Executive Director Linda Nelson. “We were delighted to celebrate our rich 92 year anniversary at Winnetka Community House. The arts community truly comes together in this space, and we are so happy to be able to continue to thrive here.”
Last April, nSAL presented a one-woman art exhibit featuring works of Cicely Clarke Michalak.
We are most proud of our talented faculty. The NSAL School & Workshop Faculty is comprised of quality art teachers and professionals in their fields. Many are on staff at local area schools and colleges (Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, Lill Street Art School, and Winnetka Public Schools among them).

House has been reflected in the many collaborative social service programs it has held here.
With the help of the Community House, The Volunteer Center has held multiple training programs for over 100 nonprofit organizations on fundraising, marketing and media relations and has sponsored Volunteer Fairs for hundreds of young adults and community members of all ages. It has also held one of its largest service days - over 800 volunteers from all over the North Shore - who attended MLK Day of Service here in January 2015.
The Volunteer Center recognizes exceptional volunteers throughout the community at its Awards Program each spring, and has helped
the Winnetka-Northfield Rotary bring over 600 volunteers to Kids Against Hunger held here since its inception in 2011.
The Volunteer Center is proud to carry the WCH logo on all its materials as it shares a mission to create better communities. The Volunteer Center Director Barb Tubekis said, “The Volunteer Center would not be as pervasive in the community if it weren’t for its productive partnership with Winnetka Community House.”
WCH co-sponsored a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in collaboration with The Volunteer Center, Kindness Connections and Winnetka Historical Society. This event drew in 800+ visitors to partake in a variety of projects for a day of service.

WCH collaborated with Toys for Tots and collected over 250 toys for children in need.
Nearly 2,000 children attended themed birthday parties at WCH. In addition, WCH partners with Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA). Their visit is a perfect opportunity for them to work on their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
The Bike Sale is an annual tradition at WCH. hUNdREds of brave souls face the early morning weather to buy or sell during this great community event. Prior to the sale, Wilmette Bicycle Shop personnel are on hand to appraise the bikes.
Group X participants receive ½ OFF all classes when they are annual Fitness Centre members.
Over 5,000 registrants ages 1-100 engage annually in educational, cultural, social, and recreational activities. Each year, an average of 600 people attend showcase
Last March, WCH teamed up with The Winnetka-Northfield Rotary Club and The Volunteer Center to host Kids Against Hunger. Over 400 volunteers came together to package over 100,000 meals for children in Nicaragua.
40 students enrolled in a ceramic class each season. Those students transformed over 2,000 pounds of clay into works of art.
Nearly 100 dogs received obedience training last year at WCH.
Each year, funds are awarded to recipients in need of program fee assistance.
WCH welcomed back
The Auxiliary of the Women’s Board of Rush University Medical Center Cook’s Tour. The ladies served 500+ lunches and sold over 450 tickets. The funds help to purchase medical equipment used to treat cancer.
185 students participated in dance classes and recitals last year.
Our Associates used the building over 750 times to run backgammon games, Irish Dance, business and civic meetings or conduct religious services. This amounts to over 20,000 visitors.
The Fitness Centre saw over 90,000 visits and its personal training staff conducted over 2,200 training sessions to help members achieve their fitness goals.

Youth Basketball League has nearly 250 participants each year (grades 1-3) and 65 volunteer coaches.

Lifelong Winnetka resident Bob Bergman, also known as “Mayor Bob,” died last June. On July 17, members of the community gathered in the Garden Under the Arches at WCH to pay tribute to him.Bob was the 15th member to join the Fitness Centre when it opened in 1984. During his 30 years of being a member, he logged 79,175 miles on the exercise cycle. That’s over 3 times around the world!
WCH Fitness Centre held a challenge for members in memory of Bob last July. Those completing 210 miles during the month were put into a raffle for a chance to win a prize.
“Bob was such an inspiring person who never complained, had a perpetual smile and positive outlook on life,” said Mike Buscher, Superintendent of Recreation and Fitness. “We will miss seeing him at WCH.”

The Nevins have long lasting ties to Winnetka. Together, Nancy and Marc live a simple life with their two dogs, Zooey and Kenji. Their roots to Winnetka Community House go back many years. “I grew up here,” said Marc. “I remember the days when the Fitness Centre was a bowling alley and Matz Hall was a movie theater. I would come every weekend to watch movies. I saw 2001 A Space Odyssey (several times), The Planet of the Apes, The Munster’s and all the classics.”
Nancy and her family did not move to Winnetka until 1968. She lived in the city with her parents, but they would bring her to WCH for ballet classes. “My connection has been here over the years in all sorts of different ways: as a student, a camp counselor, a performer, a stage manager, and producer and so on.
WCH has always been a second home for me.”
For many years, the Nevins have taught classes, held concerts, and produced plays such as the Nutcracker. “At first, it was a small production in 1986. Then, it grew to a door busting show in just five years and continued to grow for many years thereafter.” explained Marc.
However, the Nevins agreed that their most memorable moment was when they first met. “I was helping with a variety show at WCH,” said Nancy. “I was doing a lot of stage managing at the time, and the producer, Mark Caruso, decided he wanted a classical ballet piece in the show. He interviewed and hired Marc. We met right there on the middle of the stage in Matz Hall. As they say, ‘The rest is history.’ We have been happily married for 25 years.”
When asked why the Nevins decided to make a planned gift to Winnetka Community House, Nancy replied, “The Community House has given us so much over the years. We felt the need to give back. We are not in the position to give in a big way right now, so a legacy gift seemed just perfect. We would absolutely encourage others to do the same. Winnetka Community House is the place to be, and we hope to see it continue for generations to come.”
