Competitors gear up for 30th anniversary Five spectacular events will accompany hugely popular competition In late February, horse trailer after horse trailer will line up across the grounds of the Winnemucca Events Complex. The goosenecks will be out in full force for Winnemucca’s favorite event: The Ranch Hand Rodeo Weekend. This year’s 30th anniversary event will take place from Wednesday, February 27, through Sunday, March 3, drawing participants and spectators from numerous Western states and Canada to this north-central Nevada town; in all, more than 2,000 people are expected to pack the Winnemucca Events Complex. This year will see the return of the Ranch Hand Rodeo Barrel Bash with its $12,500 in added money—a recent addition to the weekend that also includes the hugely popular Ranch Hand Rodeo, Cow Dog Trial, Stock Horse Challenge, Western Trade Show and Kids’ Pee Wee events. A Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale also gathers horse sellers and buyers to Winnemucca from all over the Western United States for what many have called the weekend’s stand-out event.
Competitors have a great time over the course of the five-day weekend, but organizers say spectators will have a blast, too, catching some of the great competitions, shopping the Western Trade Show and enjoying the great food and drink from the concession area. All events take place indoors in the Winnemucca Event Center, the heart of Winnemucca’s Events Complex. The Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo will get underway WT Bruce Photography with the Calcutta auction of ranch hand teams at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, March 2. Competition among 32 four-man, one-woman teams will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, and resume at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, March 3. Saturday morning, this year’s “Ranch Hand of the Year” will also be named during a short ceremony prior to the start of competition. Admission is free to all Wednesday through Friday events as well as the Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale on Saturday evening. Admission to the Ranch Hand Rodeo Saturday and Sunday is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 6-12.
