VOTERS GUIDE 2022 Candidates who will appear on the general election ballot in Humboldt, Lander and/or Pershing County were asked by Nevada News Group to respond to two questions, and their 500-word responses are below. Candidates were asked to provide us with any background and experience they feel is relevant and particularly qualifies them for serving in such a capacity, and discuss their philosophy and goals if elected or re-elected. Answers were not edited for spelling or grammar.

ATTORNEY GENERAL — Republicans —

Chattah, Sigal QUESTION 1 Education Valley High School, Las Vegas NV Class of 1993 University Nevada Las Vegas, Class of 1997 Widener University School of Law Class of 2000 The Attorney General of Nevada serves as the Top Cop, the State’s Top Prosecutor and oversees the largest law firm in the State representing the People of the State of Nevada against public corruption, predatory markets, including insurance fraud and the constitutional offices of the state.

As the Top Cop of the State, public safety is of primary importance along with government transparency and ensuring that the people of the State of Nevada do not have to speculate as to how our government and municipalities enter into contracts and do business with the private sector.

I have over 20 years of litigation experience in criminal justice and civil litigation. As a trial attorney, I have defended multi-million lawsuits ranging from Uniform Fraudulent Transfers to frivolous premise liability cases. I have litigated cases involving political corruption effecting the private sector along with federal cases involving Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

My criminal defense practice included State and Federal defense including 9th Circuit appellate work, State and municipal defense.

I am the most qualified for this position because I have over 20 years of criminal justice experience in the field. I know the precise nuances and necessities in the criminal justice system to reduce wrongful incarceration, through diversionary programs and mental health assistance. In Nevada today, we have a severe shortage in mental health assistance which can only be rectified through extablishment of no less than two long term mental health facilities in the State.

This is something I seek to establish by converting closed prisons that are not operation today and converting them to Long Term Mental Health facilities. As of now, Nevada does not have any Long Term Mental Health Facilities, and this would be a solution to both homelessness and an alternative to incarceration.

I am against bail reform and have been a critic of the establishment of Initial Arraignment courts which release defendants based on arbitrary and faulty risk assessment reports.

The attrition of law enforcement and low morale in our police department are a result of redundant legislation that aims to stifle law enforcement’s ability to conduct their jobs, ignoring the realities of split second decision making necessary to provide the public with the safety it deserves.

Nevada is also a haven for predatory sales and human trafficking due to our tourism industry, which will also be addressed in a cohesive and objective manner. My goal would be to pass legislation providing immunity to minors trafficked to work with County Das and law enforcement to assure the prosecution and conviction of human traffickers in Nevada.

As a lawyer well immersed in federal criminal justice including UIGEA and Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act, I’m well informed on public corruption and intend to use the office of Attorney General to investigate and enforce the law against bad actors in our governments and our state.

I am a proponent of constitutional carry and believe that there should be mandatory minimums for felons in possession of firearms and prosecution of prohibited possessors who lie on their ATF 4473 forms. This is legislation that I will be introducing in office.

Ford, Aaron D. Question one: Provide us with any background and experience that is relevant to the office you seek.

I am proudly serving as Nevada’s 34th Attorney General, and the first African American to hold statewide constitutional office in Nevada. A former State Senator, I previously served as both the Majority Leader and the Minority Leader in the Nevada State Legislature and held leadership roles on several legislative committees. I also spent many years in private practice as a partner at both Snell & Wilmer LLP and Eglet Adams in Las Vegas. Before practicing law, I served as a public school math teacher, shaping hundreds of lives.

Question two: Discuss your philosophy and goals for the office if you are elected.

As the chief law enforcement officer for the state, my primary goal continues to be helping to protect Nevada families. I believe there is no task greater than the pursuit of justice and has adopted the office motto of “Our Job is Justice.”

My priority areas include what I refer to as the “Five Cs”: constitutional rights, criminal justice reform, consumer protection, client service, and community engagement. I have held several town hall forums to talk directly with Nevadans on relevant topics such as racial injustice, law enforcement policies, hate crimes, and identity theft.

Under my direction, our office has made protecting consumers from fraud, scams, and anti-competitive activity a top priority. During my tenure in office, our Bureau of Consumer Protection secured over $85 million in recoveries on behalf of Nevada consumers. Consistent with my commitment to help Nevada families, I have aggressively pursued those responsible for fueling Nevada’s opioid crisis. I am proud to have obtained the State’s first settlement of $300 million on behalf of countless Nevada families who have lost relatives to opioid abuse.

Assistant Director of Admissions, Cogswell Polytechnical College (now University of Silicon Valley) Question 2: Discuss your philosophy and goals for the office if you are elected.

My primary belief is that all of our young people have the right to dream big. One of the greatest pathways to achieving dreams in America is being able to pursue a quality, public higher education. Our colleges and universities must be shining stars that breathe life into those dreams.

In my view, the core mission of our campuses is to educate our students. We must focus on this mission. This means providing safe, accessible, diversified, affordable, enlightened campuses where our students can learn and grow. It also means honoring the faculty and staff who make learning on our campuses engaging, meaningful and fruitful.

To fulfill the mission I see, there are some current issues that must be resolved. They include the hiring of a new Chancellor, pending state budget challenges, reduced enrollments due to the pandemic and the need for a more highly trained workforce coming out of our universities and colleges. All of these issues cry out for strong, cohesive, thoughtful leadership from the Board.

I will bring over 30 years of business experience to the position. I am not a professional educator. I am an education advocate. I am also a team builder, goal setter, communicator, budgeter and community networker. I do not have any predisposed biases other than to support our students, faculty and staff in order to provide a top-tier system of higher education.

Manfredi, Aaron Question 1: Provide us with any background and experience that is relevant to the office you seek.

Aaron Manfredi has enjoyed a successful private and public sector career including being a small business owner. He’s worked in education, law enforcement, nonprofits, real estate, and gaming to name a few. As an Educator/Varsity Football Coach Aaron worked at Canarelli Middle School (Reading, English, Special Ed) and at Faith Lutheran Middle/High School (licensed sub).

As a nonprofit founder/executive director (Asperger’s Training, Employment and Life Skills) and contractor for the State of Nevada (Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation) his team successfully secured competitive employment for 173 adults with autism, high functioning disabilities, disabled veterans, and ex-felons.

This employment program focused on work force development covering Las Vegas and surrounding rural areas. Our organization also partnered with colleges across the state of Nevada for trade school licensing and certificate programs.

Aaron’s served on numerous education executive boards over the years including Project FOCUS (UNLV-Dept of Education), The Achievement Academy, INC (President), UNLV Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (Ambassador), UNLV Veterans Alumni Club (President) and the Nevada Promise Scholarship Mentorship program (College of Southern Nevada). NPS mentors high school seniors entering college for the first time and monitors them their first year of college.

My Philosophy is to actively engage with college presidents, administrators, and our future chancellor to create a hostile free work environment so we can build on our professional relationships and get back to serving with less distractions.

I’ll work tirelessly on dissecting the funding formula, so all our schools have equal opportunity for funding and learning. I’ll work with our legislators to make sure our employees and faculty are being paid equally after years of being skipped on raises and merits.

I’ll work with our team to find new ways to generate revenue so we’re more prepared for budget cuts and unfortunate situations like a pandemic.

My goals are to lower tuition, find new ways to generate revenue, protect our students on and off campus and expand our workforce development programs so rural communities have an opportunity for economic growth. We need to increase our mental health services, so nobody feels left behind, amplify our substance abuse services because we care and reestablish existing relationships with faculty, administrators, legislators, and the voters.

Rice, John Patrick Why Regent?

As a professional in higher education for nearly 30 years, I am eager to bring my experience to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents. Having worked as a professor, administrator and leader in higher ed, I have unique skills and perspectives that will enhance the education of Nevada’s college students. The future of Nevada’s workforce, professional education and research needs to be stewarded by professionals committed to guiding the Nevada System of Higher Education into the second quarter of the 21st Century.

Platform Promote access to higher education and capital investment in brick and mortar and online learning infrastructure in rural Nevada.

Continue to invest in in-person instruction in rural communities in critical career areas such as health care and mining technology.

Assure access to higher education in every rural community through continued partnerships with school districts.

Increase broadband capacities at rural campuses and centers.

Continue to build Nevada System of Higher Education online education using Great Basin College’s world class distance education faculty and infrastructure as the foundation for expanding NSHE’s world-wide reach.

Capitalize on the City of Elko’s investment in community-wide broadband to create the GBC Elko campus as the center for Distance Education in Nevada.

Using the developing NSHE strategic plan and the ongoing conversations surrounding “Question One”, engage in a comprehensive transformation of the operations of NSHE. Questions remain about the future of governance within NSHE. We must look at this as an opportunity, and work to transform NSHE to better serve students in the 21st Century.

Brief Biography John Patrick Rice John Patrick Rice has lived and worked in Elko, in the heart of rural Nevada, since 1996. He is employed by Great Basin College where he has served on the faculty and in the administration. As a faculty member, he teaches fine arts, humanities and communications. He served multiple terms as GBC’s Faculty Senate Chair. He also served as the Chair of the Nevada System of Higher Education Council of Senate Chairs, representing more than 5,000 members of the NSHE faculty.

As an administrator, he was the Chief Development Officer and the Executive Director of Great Basin College Foundation. At the foundation he designed and executed multiple capital campaigns, helping to raise more than $20 million in alternative funding for higher education in rural Nevada.

Rice is no stranger to governance. He served three terms on the Elko City Council, the last as the Mayor Pro Tempore of the City of Elko. He has also advised Nevada’s federal delegation, speaking on higher education, work force development, and economic development at the U.S. Senate Rural Caucus. He was invited to participate in the White House Community College Conference hosted by President Obama. He was recently appointed by the U.S. Senate to serve as a Board of Trustee for the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Crawford, Michelee “Shelly” Question 1: Provide us with any background and experience that is relevant to the office you seek.

My name is Shelly Crawford and I am running for Board of Regent, District 8 because as a first generation college graduate, I have benefited from upward mobility created by higher education. I am a wife, mom, school principal, and current military service member. My husband Mike and I have been married since 2002. Mike is a 5th generation union ironworker and Army veteran.

Together we have raised our two children that have benefited from our college and career trades. I believe that K-12 education needs to do a better job connecting future adults to career pathways. Here is a list of some of my work: I wrote and passed a nonpartisan $10 million Senate Bill 352 to create education opportunities with workforce development.

I assisted with the $6 billion American Recovery Act to provide broadband internet to rural communities.

I am a building principal with 20 years of experience in education yielding high academic results. To date, I have 100% recruitment and retainment of staff.

I am the recipient of the Public Education Foundation’s Educator Hero of the year.

I am a Nevada Air Force Guard member and I oversee community outreach and leadership education.

I am on Nevada State Principal Advisory Committee task force where I o see recruitment and retention.

I am a Nevada Multicultural Committee task force member where I assist with curriculum and instruction.

Question 2: Discuss your philosophy and goals for the office if you are elected.

My philosophy is that higher education should be accessible financially and by expanding programming so that our future generations can obtain the skill set the seek for a successful future. I plan to restore public credibility with the Board by identifying our hopes and dreams.

Currently, I work with the Nevada System of Higher Education and K-12 Nevada educational institutions to identify and goals and barriers.

I have a systematic practice where I bring stakeholders together to create positive change with action. I am able to get the work done because I can work with people from different backgrounds to identify common goals that improve Nevada’s economics with workforce development through educational and/or career obtainment. I am kind to everyone I meet because I believe everyone has a vested interest in our community.

My goals are based on stakeholder input and experience. They are as follows: Increase opportunities for college access Increase programming resources for rural NSHE institutions Fix NSHE’s multimillion dollar budget shortages by fighting for the money owed by the state Create collaborative listening tours with NSHE stakeholders to create opportunities for students and staff to create a plan for improvement Restore board credibility with collective work focused on outcomes measured by student enrollment, program expansion, and stakeholder climate surveys with a focus on rural communities I am requesting your vote for Board of Regent, District 8 because no one will work harder for changes that impact our future.

Hanifan, Tim My name is Tim Hanifan and I am running to represent northern Nevada and its second congressional district.

Growing up within Northern Nevada I understand and believe it represents a microcosm of the United States, both rural and developing alike.

I have various levels of experience which will help me understand what is needed of our leaders. Working over two summers and a semester for the Late Senator Harry Reid, where I was able to help with constituent work, attend and summarize various hearings, and helped plan the 2015 Tahoe Summit.

Beyond this I have always found myself in a role or an educator helping others. First through various tutoring positions to becoming a teacher’s assistant and leading my own mini classes where I helped various individuals understand and move past difficult and troubling topics. Even now, as a customer service retail employee I find myself working every day to help solve everyday problems and enrich the lives of everyday Nevadans on a daily basis.

I am seeking to represent Nevada and its second congressional district to better the lives of everyday Nevadans and work for them.

Our government should work for the people and the working class. I am running for congress to change the conversation and start addressing the real issues we are facing every day. Once elected, I plan on working to draft and fight for policies and laws which bring much needed money and resources to our state.

I believe in democracy and making it easier for people to vote. I believe in climate change and that this country must take a serious stance on combating climate change. I am a scientist. I seek to help make science the foundation of the decisions made in Congress and the country. Being a scientist means being committed to compromise and finding a solution which benefits everyone.

There are many other duties for a U.S. representative. First, they must be present to vote on bills while also showing up and engaging in appointed committee hearings and business. Finally, they must ever so diligently reach across the aisle to work towards compromise.

We must ensure policies and laws benefit Nevada and the country as a whole. Additionally, an open-door policy for all the individuals they represent is always a benefit.

Hamilton, Eddie I am a solid patriot conservative Republican who once ran for governor against the liberal Republican governor Brian Sandoval. I finished second in that primary. I, therefore, have the experience of running a statewide campaign in the Battleborn Silverstate of Nevada. Republican voters in Nevada know me.

In this election cycle, I am the ONLY president Trump’s RNC 2016 National Delegate amongst the 14 Republicans running. I promise you that I will carry the Trump Torch for America First Agenda all the way to 2024!

In 2015/2015 I was the president of CCM-Nevada (Coalition for a Conservative Majority). We were instrumental in flipping the US Senate into a Republican majority nationwide and thus we ended the status of Harry Reid, as the Senate Majority Leader!

As your governor, I will be implementing a new political doctrine in this gubernatorial race: I AM RUNNING TO BE THE FIRST EVER LAWFULLY ELECTED CONSTITUTIONAL PEOPLE’S “MILITIA” GOVERNOR FOR THE BATTLEBORN SILVERSTATE OF NEVADA! This concept is lawful according to our state constitution Article-12 and

The emergency situation we face now in Nevada is the “destruction of our democracy and constitutional government” by the socialist Democrats! So a militia governor is just what the doctor ordered …A militia governorship is our “equalizer” or as I call it, it is our “nuclear option” against the marauding socialist Democrats in Carson City.

As a your “militia governor” I will deploy a militia force of patriotic citizen volunteers to our southern borders, as the USA is anticipating of an “invasion” of some 6 million illegal aliens per year starting in mid-May 2022!

Additionally, I will empanel a grand jury and military JAG-type prosecutors to finally litigate the some 200,000 election fraud and irregularities from the 2020 election (currently ignored by Democrats and some Republicans). The Democrats are not allowing these frauds to be tried in courts!

Also, I have plans to start FRACKING for oil and gas in eastern Nevada in undeveloped fields along the Utah state line. We have 2 refineries that could be retrofitted to make our own cheaper gasoline (to fight inflation at the gas pump and the skyrocketing natural gas prices). In Nevada we have only drilled several hundreds oil wells compared to 100,000 wells plus nationwide!

As your governor, I also have plans to bring fresh water to southern Nevada by diverting the Ohio River (from its discharge into the Mississippi river) and re-route the river to Lake Mead by building a 2- thousand miles East/West water way to be managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The MKARN ACT of 1961 could be amended to do this water ways project (they built a 500 miles north/south waterways, completed in 1971 at a cost of $1.5 billion, connecting Tulsa, Oklahoma to the Gulf of Mexico).

I am against tax hike or new taxes. I am pro-life and pro gun 2A. As your governor I will protect our churches and I will defend thd civil rights of the Unvaccinated.

Evertsen, Gary My Name is GARY “RADAR” Evertsen I’m running for Nevada governor, as a constitutional conservative.

The reason I chose to file to run for Nevada Governor, is because the way our current governor has chosen to run our great state as a dictatorship.

Military Service ACTIVE ARMY 8 YEARS WITH SERVICE IN WEST GERMANY DURING THE COLD WAR. With the Wyoming National Guard my unit deployed to South Korea For military training in 1978 for Team Spirit 78, then with the Nevada National Guard I Deployed to Okinawa, Japan for training is was stationed at Torri Station with the MARS STATION military affiliated radio station, we provided radio telephone communications for service members to call home to the United States for low cost phone calls. During my military Service I’ve received numerous commendation and achievement medals. I’ve seen socialism and communism firsthand, while stationed in West Germany I was chosen in June 1979 to make a special visit into communist East Germany.

Public Service I also have 25 years of Public Service. In the city of Hanna Wyoming Having Served in emergency communications and reserve police officer and volunteer fire fighter, 1985 – 1990. the we moved to Nevada November 1990, then serving with the Spring Creek Nevada, volunteer fire department as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician Private Sector I’ve been employed in mining from 1985 – 2010, I was a member of the Barrick Goldstrike emergency response team C Crew from 2001 – 2010 Employed by Barrick Goldstrike 1990 – 2010.

Heck, Tom Tom Heck has been a leader almost all his life -- from the time he was the quarterback on his high school football team to being a Flight Commander at the United States Air Force Academy to running the Logistics for the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. Tom knows how to get the right things done, even in the toughest situations and the most complex bureaucracies.

United States Senate Bid Tom ran for US Senate for Nevada in 2016 and 2018. In 2018, he came in second in the Republican Primary against Dean Heller Nevada Governor 2022 Campaign Tom has a passion for service to his country and making a difference for his fellow Americans. His overarching goal has always been to improve the American way of life and to ensure he works better and smarter for those he has served. Tom has always left assignments leaving things better and infinitely more responsive and efficient than when he found them. Throughout his military service and subsequent employment in the public sector, Tom has maintained his commitment and desire to continue to serve America and his fellow Americans whenever he has been called to do so and in whatever capacity he has been asked to serve.

Tom’s decision to run for Nevada Governor is grounded in his commitment to Nevada, America, and his fellow Americans. Tom recognizes that we are at a cross roads in our country in which we must either come together to embark on the serious business of reigniting our shared responsibility and commitment to ensure the American dream remains vibrant or run the risk that the American Dream will die.

Tom understands that our task is a daunting one, but it is not an insurmountable one. We must join ranks and ensure those who represent us in all branches of government, whether it be the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, or Judicial Branch, are purposeful and focused on building on and safeguarding the American Dream. Tom believes that all Americans must ensure those on whom we bestow the honor to serve do so in such a way that their focus remains firmly on providing opportunities and improving outcomes for all Americans rather than on the current cronyism which exists today, especially in Nevada, in which those in elected positions are more concerned about keeping their jobs than doing their jobs.

America needs the type of strong, courageous, insightful leadership which Tom has demonstrated throughout his lifetime of service to others and to his country. Tom will bring the same leadership to our great State of Nevada and those of us, who live, work, and play here.

Walls, William I am William “Dock” Walls. I am a husband, father of three, a Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.

I graduated Tuskegee University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Political Science, and earned my Juris Doctor Degree from Illinois Institute of Technology – Chicago Kent College of Law. Transportation: Ensuring a strong statewide transportation network for residents and visitors is essential to guarantee that people can get to work and more effortlessly and safely throughout the state. We must reform transportation governance to align with geographical and demographic representation. The building of new infrastructure, funding urban transportation and utilizing Interstate 11 to spur economic growth in our Central Great Basin in vital to our transportation success.

Housing: The combination of limited public land and continued growth is why we struggle to meet current and future housing demands.

We must evaluate current housing conditions, including requirements that constrain the development of multi-family housing, understand the demography of the under-housed, and identify land that may be repurposed to develop affordable housing. I was appointed and served in our State Senate in 2016. I helped spearhead two legislative efforts: first in amending our construction laws and secondly in getting legislation passed in 2021 to help abused children.

For the past 31 years I have owned a small business in Renoemploying hundreds as we built residential, industrial and commercial projects.

80% of the Secretary of State’s job deals with businesses – having someone who understands small businesses is critical. All candidates will talk about election reform (which I support and will provide leadership to) but I am the only one who has worked for over 3 decades in their own small business. I will run that office as I would my own.

Scotti, Richard Background and Experience The Honorable Richard Scotti, former District Judge, is the only candidate with legal, business, and judicial experience: 30 years as a Nevada business lawyer; 10 years as a business owner; and 6 years as a District Judge.

Scotti is a highly distinguished member of our legal community - elected twice as a Governor of the State Bar, and appointed by the Supreme Court for a decade as a Settlement Judge. The official legal rating service awarded Scotti “preeminent” status for 12 straight years in ethics. The American Bar Foundation has ranked Scotti in the top 1% of legal professionals.

Scotti was a partner in a successful law firm handling complex business and real estate law, and represented major casinos, contractors, and small businesses. Scotti tried one of the longest civil jury trials in the history of Nevada. He worked as a Foreclosure Mediator during the Housing Crisis. He protected Nevadans by serving as Prosecutor, and Administrative Judge for the Nevada State Contractor’s Board.

As a firm Constitutionalist, Scotti led the Clark County Republican Party as its Chairman in 2009-10, and before that as the Precinct Director, where he supervised hundreds of Precinct Captains to protect election integrity. Scotti’s Statement on Philosophy and Goals Our Republic is ailing because our election system is broken.

“Consent of the governed” does not work without election integrity. The solutions are obvious. Let’s insure “chain of custody” for our ballots, like Judges do for evidence. Eliminate universal mail in balloting. Make ballot harvesting a felony again. Require Voter ID. Vigorously clean the voter rolls. Make it easy to vote, but only for those legally eligible.

The machines for signature verification, vote-casting, and vote-tabulation, have too many vulnerabilities. I will hire the best IT experts for options to eliminate data breaches.

I was always known as the “Constitution Judge.” The Nevada Policy Research Institute applauded my precedential “Separation of Powers” decision – where I told extreme-left legislators they cannot make the law at the same time they serve as prosecutors enforcing the law. As Judge I allowed challenges to the Governor’s efforts to closedown gyms using his purported executive power.

The Secretary of State position is all about the laws for elections, business growth, and the State prison system. I will restore election integrity, promote economic growth, and keep us safe.

Each year, Nevada writes off millions of dollars in uncollectable funds, and for the last reported year, (fiscal year ended 6/30/2020), that cumulative amount was nearly $200,000,000. These monies could be used to bolster our education system, enhance social services, build (or repair) infrastructure – or be used for a variety of other programs.

Collecting these funds on an ongoing basis also would help us keep our taxes low. First and foremost, we need to be increasing collections of monies owed to the state.

We also must continue to diversify our economy. Accordingly, I would use the office to help Nevadans starting small businesses by breaking down a barrier to entry and helping them get started on the “Right Track.” This would help develop additional revenues and decrease the need for social services (thereby helping the state’s bottom line). I’ve been a politicos all my life, I live, eat, sleep and breathe Ultra-Leftist politics (my area of expertise is foreign policy) all of the world’s current hot spots - The entire Levant region - from the Wadi Rum, to the Hindu Kush - South China Sea issues - Indo-China affairs - ALL of the republics of former USSR & Warsaw Pact nations/The Russian Federation. My number one legislative priority will be reparations for Native and African Americans. This issue has been left legislatively in no man’s land - as some non issue when it’s actually the most important legislation in the history of our republic left unfinished.

It’s a reparative justice long overdue, dangled early on after the Civil War (during the Reconstruction eras) but was never realized.

I plan to call this nation to task for its centuries of inhumane treat-

ment of both Native and African Americans.

The total elimination of student debt held by the government - all $1.6 trillion.

To my mind it’s a no-brainer that such debt on the backs of millions of Americans doesn’t help the nation as a whole move ahead - in fact it does the exact opposite. .

And climate science, the proof that we humans have taken mother nature to the brink. It’s actually irreversible already, we’ve crossed the Rubicon and are at the stage of merely mitigating the damage already done (planting 1.3 trillion trees) keeping it under 1 and 1/2 degrees Celsius is just a conversation for the ill informed.

Lastly, to walk back the insanity regarding this endless hammering of the russian-federation. It must end. They have the capability of ending all life in America, all it’ll take is the right pressure point and they’ll strike first. It’s going to be decided among the nuclear armed nations considered adversarial (russian-federation, China, north Korea) that humanity can survive minus 320 million Americans. I’m certain the conversation has happened already. Nothing, but nothing, in Ukraine is worth the thought of engaging in nuclear war over.

Cortez Masto, Catherine During my two terms as Nevada’s attorney general and chief law enforcement officer, I worked to keep our communities safe. I cracked down on crime, protected consumers, and worked closely with local law enforcement. I made it my mission to stand up for vulnerable women and girls, leading the fight to break up sex trafficking rings by passing a landmark law to make sex trafficking a felony crime, ensuring victims of domestic and sexual violence had the right to sue their captors, and expanding the sex offender registry to protect kids.

In this campaign, I am pleased to have earned the endorsement of the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers and the Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition, representing 19 law enforcement groups and thousands of officers from across the state.

In the U.S. Senate, I have worked with both Democrats and Republicans to deliver for Nevadans. During the pandemic, I made sure Nevada got the federal support we needed. In the past ten years I have to file 4 GOVCHA complaints regarding Balance Billing ,Coding errors and being denied health care at the Walk In clinic when I have two Health Plans and filed a Complaint with the Justice Dept. for Discrimination . Was sent from the Walk In Clinic to the Covid Clinic for testing and was told to go to the ER and after 3 hours at the ER was charged over $6,000.00 and then HGH Billing only billed one plan and then sent me a bill for $1300.00 and was sent home with over the counter medication . Then HGH reported to one of the credit reporting Agency’s that I refused to pay a medical bill and it was for a person not in my medical Plan . It seems HGH goes from one scandal to another . This is only the short list and I have more . After being on 3 Boards I think I can solve some of HGH’s problems and I’m a hands on person and has experience working in Hospitals and has worked on budget problems and many others . And one other problem That HGH has is charging outrageous fees compared to other hospitals and hiding their Hospital ratings in each department .

As a teenager, I was the secretary for my 4H club, which taught me how to keep and record minutes and how important they are to keeping an organization running smoothly and efficiently. From there I entered the work force and worked in customer service and management for different companies most recently in law enforcement with the Colorado State Patrol and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department as a 911 dispatcher. I am also currently serving as the 4H Leader to the cooking program. If elected, I would like to propose that our county go back to using paper ballots and that they be counted by

hand. Mail in ballots will be by request only, which is available now by request through the county clerk’s office. If elected. I would also like to see that signature verification be done every other year, rather than just at driver’s license renewal time, as people’s signatures can change suddenly, especially if there are medical conditions that alter their signature, for example, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and partial blindness.

Along those same lines, I would also like to encourage those who have lost loved ones to make sure that their names have been removed from voter registration lists. I appreciate the opportunity to run for your County Clerk, I would like to encourage everyone to come out and vote in June at the Primary Election, as it is just as important as the General Election in November.

Spero, Tami I currently serve the residents of Humboldt County as their Clerk and have done so since first being elected in 2003. I began my time in the Clerk’s Office in November of 1993 as the microfilm clerk and since that time have handled all duties associated with the Office. Those duties include serving as Clerk to the Sixth Judicial District Court, Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners, Clerk to the County Board of Equalization, Clerk to the County Debt Management Commission, Clerk to the County Regional Transportation Commission, Voter Registrar and Chief Election Official. Other duties within the Office include the issuance and record management of marriage licenses, county business licenses, notary bonds, nuisance complaints, fictitious firm name documents, power of attorney documents, statistical data collection require for aspects of the office and management of the jury process for the Court. I have experience with management of staff, government budgeting and, given my time with the County, I am familiar with all aspects of the County as well as other governmental entities including the manner in which those duties connect to the Clerk’s Office.

Philosophy My philosophy is simple. Work for the residents of this County in the most cost effective and diligent way possible given the breadth and number of duties handled by the Office. Be responsive, honest, hard working and available to the public. Greet everyone with a smile and do my best to understand their needs and assist them to the best of my ability.

My goals for this term include determining ways to improve the minute process for the various boards, implementing the electronic filing portion of the new case management system for the court, addressing the changes that will be coming with the election responsibilities of the office, training a very new staff in all aspects of the office and continuing to serve the people of Humboldt County in the best way I can.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY COMMISSIONER — Seat C —

Cerri, Ron My name is Ron Cerri, and I am running for re-election to the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners Seat C. I have served Humboldt County for two terms as Commissioner and would be honored to serve a third and final term.

I live in Orovada, where my wife, Denise, and I operate a family ranch with our son and his wife, our daughter, her husband and their two children.

Another daughter, her husband and their three children live in Winnemucca, where they are both employed in local law enforcement.

Prior to becoming a County Commissioner, I served on a number of community boards and organizations. I was a Trustee for the Orovada Volunteer Fire Department, member of the 4-H Show and Sale Committee for about 15 years, and 4-H leader for 20 years. I have donated many hours to the industry that provides for my family, Agriculture. I am a Past President of the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association (NCA); current positions in NCA include Co-Chairman of Public Lands Committee, member of the Board of Directors and Executive Board. I am a member of the N-2 Grazing Board for the Winnemucca BLM Grazing District, Director for Nevada on the Public Lands Council, and a member of the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce.

As a County Commissioner, I also serve on a number of boards representing the commission; Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority, Humboldt River Basin Water Authority, Humboldt Foundation, Regional Transportation Commission, and am Chairman of the Board of Equalization.

Discuss your philosophy and goals for the office if you are elected.

My philosophy when it comes to government is that its role in people’s lives should be limited. I believe government’s purpose is to provide services that cannot be provided by the private sector. In order to protect people and property, government must create and enforce laws and ordinances. Examples of public safety include law enforcement and jails, our judicial system, including the courts (district and justice), fire protection, road maintenance, and in limited cases, helping those that cannot help themselves through no fault of their own.

In the eight years I have served the commission, our revenues have exceeded the county’s expenditures all but three fiscal years. We were able to accomplish this without any change to the property tax rate, while also providing negotiated wage increases to our employees, and improvements to our county that wouldn’t have otherwise been possible.

If re-elected, some of my top priority goals would be to resolve the nitrate issues in Grass Valley, complete upgrades on our public safety radio towers, continue to try and get more safety improvements on Highway 95, work with the city to resolve the housing shortage, and to keep taxes low and the county debt free.

It has been an honor serving the citizens of Humboldt County for the last eight years. I humbly ask for your vote in the upcoming primary so I can continue to help lead Humboldt County into the future, while providing the best quality of life for the residents throughout all of Humboldt County.

Jenkins, Drew I’m Drew Jenkins and I’m running for Humboldt County Commissioner Seat C. I’d like to tell you a little about myself and why I feel like I’m a good fit for the position. I am born and raised in Winnemucca. My father has been a business owner of several businesses since the 1950’s. When I was in my early 20’s I moved to Denver CO. where I got an Architectural/Structural drafting degree. After 6 years in Denver, I moved to Reno where I enrolled in a Construction Management degree program at TMCC. While going to school I worked for a Civil Engineering company that designed subdivisions in Fallon, Yerington, and Fernley. During this time, I drew the plans, drafted tentative maps, and feasibility studies, then presented them to the local jurisdiction ie. Planning Commissions, County Commissions, and City Counsels. This gave me experience in infrastructure as well as planning and zoning regulations. Six years later I moved back to Winnemucca, eventually transitioning into a Sales Representative position at CarWil. During this time, I was the President of two local racing associations presiding as president over both associations for one year. Additionally, I was on the Winnemucca Rural Volunteer Fire Department. Four and a half years later I began working as a Sales Representative with Cashman Equipment. While at Cashman Equipment I’ve sold equipment to everybody from weekend warriors to local construction companies, to farmers, and to some of the local Mines. Recently I’ve transitioned to a Mining Account Manager where I only manage mining accounts. This experience has given me insight to our local industries that many people don’t have the opportunity to experience.

I believe that my time as a draftsman and sales representative qualifies me as a good fit for County Commissioner. I know this county, its industries, and residents as well as anyone. I believe Humboldt County is perfectly located to diversify our economy. I promote well managed and thoughtful growth and I understand the residents of this county have many concerns and I’m here to listen. I welcome any input and I’m excited for the opportunity to represent the amazing citizens of Humboldt County!

My philosophy regarding the Commissioner position is simply to listen. Often, issues or projects are extremely complex and require an enormous amount of information. I believe a good Commissioner needs to be able to navigate this information effectively as well as put in the time to research on their own. A County Commissioner needs to be able to listen and consider every side of the issue even if they don’t necessarily align with their own personal ideals.

Mccolgan, Scott Hi, I’m Scott mccolgan, Running for county commissioner seat C. I have a blessed life here in humboldt county, I would like to continue this for my daughter and everyone’s else’s children out there. I’m a constitutional conservative.

I believe we need to limit the over reach the government has on are everyday life’s. I’m happy with my choice to move here.

I enjoy the outdoors, and also enjoy doing martial arts.

I work for the railroad, I work with contractors, and see first hand how, companies try to take advantage when they believe no one is watching.

Evatz, Mark Having lived here for over 30 years, I have a good understanding of the past, current, and future issues that have and will continue to impact Humboldt County and its residents. I have an engineering and business education and 35 years of significant experience working in the mining industry including 20 plus years in senior management positions. This experience included general management of all the various disciplines associated with a largescale mining operation, with oversight responsibility for over 500 people. My mining and management background provided me with substantial experience dealing with the multiple-use land management and water-related issues associated with our county’s public lands; lands administered by the BLM and USFS and regulated under Federal and State environmental laws. My management experiences provided me with the opportunity to work closely and collaborate with local government entities, the school district, the ranching community, and local businesses. I actively served on the Humboldt Development Authority Board for 7 years and participated in the creation of associated strategic plans. I’m a founding Board member of the Nevada Muleys organization; a locally based non-for-profit that works to improve mule deer habitat and youth-hunting education in northern Nevada. My family and I have been blessed with our time in Humboldt County! We have built lasting friendships with members of this great county/community; our time here has been very special, rewarding, and impactful.

As such, if elected, I look forward to giving back to Humboldt County through public service as your County Commissioner, Seat E. I just want to serve are county productively and make it a better place to live.

Education: Lowry High, Norther Nevada Community College, University of Nevada (UNR), Queen’s University Toronto, Canada.

Work Esperance: United States Marine Corps Veteran where I learned communication skills, discipline, and team work. Heavy Equipment operator Operating engineers #3 operated all types of heavy equipment where I learned how to be a heavy equipment instructor. Hycroft Gold Mine General Forman where, I operated the blast furnace and cast gold and silver bar’s where I keep all records of gold and silver production. I was also Forman of blasting crew, and labor crew. Nevada Department of Corrections (Correctional Sergeant) where I was a Police Officer Standards and Training instructor, preparing bi annual budget, balancing budgets. I also managed state property, buildings, and vehicles. I also managed a nitrite problem at a minimum security prison caused by a bad septic system design, until it was corrected (retired). Barrick Gold underground miner. Barrick Gold training coordinator prepared standard operating procedures for numerus mining tasks. Mine Safety and Health Administration instructor surface and underground, and equipment operator trainer. I saved Barrick Millions of dollars by properly training employees on the proper operation of equipment (retired).

I have noticed many Humboldt county employees misusing the county equipment, or using it for the own private use. I have went to Humboldt county Commissioners meetings and have addressed the commissioners. Trying to help save the county some money by voluntary training some of the county employees on the proper operation of equipment for free in 2019. But they declined.

There is a big problem that has been growing around the star city area with the increase amount of nitrates in the water shed for years.

The County Commissioners approved to purchase the water company in that area. After perching the water company it needed new wells to make drinking water standards. This is only a bandage the growth in the area has not been managed. The only solution is a sewer system to stop the spread of the nitrite plum. Either the county has to build a sewer plant, or makes a deal with the city of Winnemucca to connect to their sewer system. Either way this will cost million’s.

My goals are youth job training programs, controlled growth, and manage government spending.

Owens, Michael My name is Mike Owens and I am running for the Humboldt County Commissioner Seat E. I have lived in Humboldt County for 40 years, raising a family, owning the former Ford dealership and own Park Cinema where I have happily greeted you for the past 20 years. I enjoy serving this community and have had various opportunities to learn the intricacies of local government. During my 14 years on the Humboldt County School District, I served as both the Board Chair and the Vice Chair. I then was elected to the Winnemucca City Council, where I have proudly served for the past 10 years. My time on the City Council has given me the opportunity to work with various Boards including: the Airport Board, the Landfill Committee, the Local Emergency Planning Committee and the Regional Transportation Committee. All these committees have afforded me the opportunity to work with members of the County Commission. On both the School Board and in my role as Councilman, I have had the opportunity to serve on the negotiating teams.

My membership on the various committees mentioned above allowed me to build an understanding of the importance of working relationships that benefit Humboldt County. As a Councilman, I was able to work directly with the Commissioners on our Joint Cost Share Agreement. This agreement – the only in the state of Nevada- is a collaborative effort resulting in shared costs which save taxpayers money for the residents of Humboldt County.

Through the collaborative efforts of the City of Winnemucca, Humboldt County Commission and School District, the Pennington Foundation, the mining industry and local businesses we were able to build a new recreation complex and a Boys/Girls Club facility. We have built much of the infrastructure for future fields and have completed the soccer fields. This recreation complex will benefit all the residents of Humboldt County.

I was appointed to the American Rescue Plan joint funding committee. We have worked together for the last 2 years using our combined funding from the Federal government to best meet the needs of our residents and businesses. I understand the need to work together for the benefit of all.

As a public servant, I have worked with others to improve this community by building a new sewer treatment plant, a new fire station, a new animal control center and much needed improvements in our infrastructure. We have upgraded all of our city parks with new play structures and added a new splash pad. My commitment to fiscal conservancy is demonstrated as we were able to do all the projects excluding the sewer treatment plant with money saved in our general fund.

In closing, I bring to the County Commission the best candidate, who understands what it means to represent the citizens of Humboldt County and work with our current County Commissioners for the betterment of our county. I have the experience that matters.

I am proud of Humboldt County and plan on doing the absolute best I can to provide citizens the same opportunities that my family has been offered.

I am a longtime Republican party member who believes in the Constitution of the United States, the amendments to the constitution and our Bill of Rights. I certainly believe in the right to bear arms and exercise these rights. I have and will always support our law enforcement agencies and the work they do to protect our county and community.

I support our farming and ranching community and believe in protecting that way of life when it comes to land and water management.

Mining is also an extremely important industry that I will work with to maintain its role in the growth of our county. We must make decisions based on sound science and continuous research that will protect our lands for future generations.

I will continue to support pro-growth policies that would increase economic development and avoid any additional local government bureaucracy. I am fiscally conservative, and any major projects would need to be justified and affordable. I believe that Humboldt County has and will continue to work best without state or federal oversite or mandates. I believe in local control and would be opposed to any federal or state mandates whether they are funded or not.

My goals, if elected, would be similar to what I have been able to do while serving in other offices: work within the budget to improve our quality of life, develop future projects which would benefit our community while maintaining fiscal prudence.

Humboldt County is a great place to live, retire, visit, or own a business. I would work tirelessly to ensure that Humboldt County continues to prioritize the needs of all citizens so that this quality of life remains in place and our community thrives in future years.

Steward, Kris My name is Kris Stewart, I’m a working rancher from Paradise Valley.

I’ve lived in Humboldt County for over 30 years and raised my family here. I have always been involved in our community and have been active in service and business organizations, a member of the Humboldt County Library Board and Humboldt County School Board.

I’ve been a 4H leader, an FFA coach, PTO President, an academic tutor, and chair of the Ninety-Six Ranch Sesquicentennial Committee that organized 14 events in 2014 which raised nearly $300,000 for local youth and charitable organizations. I’m currently managing our family ranch, an active member of R-CALF USA and a director of the Humboldt River Basin Water Authority. I believe now is a great time to put my skills to use as a County Commissioner. I’m a good listener, a natural leader, and I’ll work well with the rest of commission as well as local employees and officials. I’ll be an active voice for all of Humboldt County. I’m a strong advocate for local business and economic development as well as the bedrock industries of agriculture and mining which built Humboldt County and keep her strong today.

My successful work with the Trump Administration’s Department of Interior on common sense Rangeland Reform in the aftermath of the 2018 Martin fire highlights the advantage of having a strong, organized communicator who already knows the players and understands landuse, ranching, regulatory, wildlife and sportsmen’s issues on County Commission when dealing with State and Federal agencies.

I’ll approach the job of County Commissioner with a strong set of core values rather than any set agenda. I’m a self-employed small business person, and I’ve relied on myself my entire adult life. I understand struggling to make ends meet. You can be sure that I’m careful with my own money and I’ll be careful with yours. I believe that our County Commission should help to create an environment where individuals, community and businesses can thrive. Our goal should be to make certain that Humboldt County remains an outstanding place to live, work, raise a family and grow a business. For me, this means keeping taxes low, saying no to unnecessary regulation, upholding all of our constitutional rights, and investing in smart policies, needed infrastructure, people and programs that will serve us long-term. Because almost 82% of Humboldt County land is federally controlled, we must take a strong, proactive approach to dealing with the BLM and USFS. We must also stay involved in the State Legislative process and state agencies which control funding and policy that affects us here at home. I have strong skills in these areas. I’m a proud conservative and patriot who makes no apologies for owning and using firearms, or using any of my other protected freedoms. If I’m elected, I’ll always listen, I’ll be ready to talk with everyone and you’ll always know where I stand. HUMBOLDT COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY Mayo-Case, Massey Q1: Background and experience relevant to the office you seek: After earning my law degree in 2007, I decided to return home to Winnemucca, to raise a family and practice law. Over the past 15 years, I have devoted myself to providing legal services to rural Nevadans and have had the privilege of practicing in various Courts, and before many Judges, in our great State. Practicing law in rural Nevada requires a depth of legal knowledge and skill. As a private litigator, I represented clients in family law matters, the adult criminal system, the juvenile system, probate matters, real property matters, guardianships, estate planning, and other general civil litigation. My clients have included businesses, individuals, and children. For each client, or matter, the goal was to assert and protect the client’s legal rights while proactively problem-solve issues. Using my talents to serve others is my passion.

In July 2021, I left private practice to serve as a Court Master in the Sixth Judicial District Court where I made judicial recommendations in cases involving vulnerable children, vulnerable adults, and families in distress. While on the bench, I saw a need and opportunity for systematic change and made the decision to run for public office.

The District Attorney Office has a duty to serve all the people. My legal experience is built upon a solid foundation and understanding of the law. I know what it means to give voice to the voiceless, to support families in crisis, and to seek justice on behalf of those who are unable to advocate alone.

Q2: Philosophy and goals if elected As District Attorney I intend to deliver consistent and responsive criminal justice. It is my intention to work within our community to prioritize safety, prevent harm, and preserve fair and equal justice. Under my leadership, the district attorney’s office will, in collaboration with law enforcement and community leaders, create and implement crime prevention programs that will provide education to parents, caregivers, organizations, and the like, on topics relevant to our daily lives and safety. Attorneys will be expected to be community-connected and agents of change. Problem solving will occur inside, and out, of the courtroom.

Violent and serious criminal offenders need to be held accountable and the public, as a jury, should be afforded the opportunity to determine guilt or innocence. Additionally, the District Attorney should support evidence-based treatment programs focused on addiction and mental health for those who are serious about change. To combat recidivism, it requires redefining an individual’s purpose in life. I believe in a mission to support growth in individual human well-being, which translates to family and community well-being.

The pursuit of justice takes all of us, acting for the collective good. I value that my role is to listen and learn from the community that I serve.

Providing a voice for the voiceless is a cornerstone of my public service philosophy. Victims should never be left in the shadows, feeling unseen, unheard, and alone.

My vision as District Attorney is to fulfill my legal responsibilities with excellence and to the benefit of the entire community.

Pasquale, Kevin QUESTION 1: Provide us with any background and experience that is relevant to the office you seek.

There is no office on this ballot where experience is more critical than the Office of the District Attorney. The duties of a District Attorney cover a myriad of areas in government law and those tasks are complex and overwhelming to inexperienced attorneys. I know, I am one of a few attorneys recognized by the State Bar as a “mentor” and I have trained numerous attorneys in the skills required to be a prosecutor.

Fortunately, I have the experience to train attorneys new to the office and to successfully perform all the functions required of a District Attorney. I have over 25 years experience as a prosecutor and have served 3 terms as President of the Nevada District Attorney’s Association. I have successfully tried the most serious of crimes including murder, rape and child molestation and I have done so in 8 Nevada counties as a District Attorney, a Deputy District Attorney, and as a Special Prosecutor. I have taught Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Evidence at Western Nevada Community College and have been an instructor on numerous topics through the District Attorney’s Association.

I am tough but fair and I am supported by both law enforcement and many defense attorneys I have litigated against because they recognize my abilities to achieve results without trampling on the rights of the accused.

There are a handful of attorneys in the State, and none in this election, that can match my experience. I am uniquely qualified to be Humboldt County District Attorney.

QUESTION 2: Discuss your philosophy and goals for the office if you are elected.

When I was District Attorney in Churchill County, I led a motivated law enforcement community. Conviction rates were through the roof, morale was high, agencies cooperated with each other, and the results were tangible. These results are achieved through skilled trial advocacy, close communication with officers, holding defense attorneys accountable in court and by educating boards and judges on subjects where they lack experience.

As Chief Deputy District Attorney, I now hold weekly meetings with detectives and offer guidance in successful, complete, investigations.

The better the investigation, the better the prosecution. I want to expand training beyond detectives. I want regularly scheduled training sessions with all city patrolmen, county deputies, and NHP troopers.

We will cover topics such as report writing, testifying, liability avoidance, and legislative and Supreme Court changes to the law. This training improves law enforcement performance, boosts confidence and that boosts morale. Effective law enforcement occurs when we all work together and we work best together when we communicate. All of this culminates in effective prosecution results and safer communities.

As a Veteran, I learned leadership skills at an early age and honed those skills through years of dedicated service to the community - - seen and unseen. An inexperienced prosecutor is a follower, by necessity and by definition. The District Attorney must be a leader and you cannot lead from the rear.

As a Humboldt County native I believe our communities deserve effective leadership that serves to protect you, your family and your property.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY RECORDER Burhans, Bailey My experience at a local title company led and prepared me to pursue the role of Humboldt County Recorder.

I worked directly with the recorder’s office through real estate transactions and I am familiar with a lot of the forms they use. I am also familiarizing myself with the Nevada Revised Statues that the office has to follow, and I have volunteered my time at our neighboring recorder’s offices to get the “on the job” feel and experience.

Although in office experience can be helpful at the start of any position, no one is born with this knowledge and I understand there will be a learning curve. I’m young and energetic, adapt quickly to new tasks, and grew up with technology. I plan to apply those skills to the job and give the public an efficient and competent office to keep their records secure and accessible. Preserving the history of Humboldt County and serving the public with respectful customer service is what I aim to do.

Hunt, Gene Question #1: Background and Experience As a real estate professional, I have 32 years of experience in the industry. I have worked as a recorder for South Coast Title Company, Direct Title Company and as a recording supervisor for the Sunland Title Plant.

I have recorded, indexed and cataloged thousands of documents during my career. I have performed those processes in accordance with the standards and best practices which have been set by ARMA (Association of Records Managers and Administrators). ARMA sets standards and guidelines used for records management, that are used not only here in the United States, but also Internationally. I have also prepared over two hundred thousand documents for recordation as an Escrow Officer and as the owner of a document preparation company. I have worked with customers on all forms of recordable documents, including patents and mining claims.

I have also worked in the State of Nevada as a Senior Certified Escrow Officer. In order to be a Senior Certified Escrow Officer, you must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in order to test for certification. I am a former President of the Southern Nevada Escrow Association. I am fully versed in Nevada Revised Statutes regarding the recordation of documents in the State of Nevada, those statutes include. but are not limited to NRS 247 and NRS 111. During my term as an Escrow Officer, I have met with thousands of members of the communities I have served. I have worked with individuals, realtors, mortgage professionals, attorneys, and mining companies in various capacities.

As for my management experience, I have over 20 years of experience as a department or division manager for companies like Fidelity

National. I have supervised departments varying from 5 - 25 people. I have prepared and administered multi-million dollar budgets for those departments. I have prepared and submitted monthly, quarterly and yearly reports for our corporate offices and also for submission to local and state agencies as needed.

I believe that as an elected official, we serve the community. I am a former President Elect of the Winnemucca Rotary Club, the current President and Board Member for Nevada Outdoor Schools, a member of the Eagle Scout Review Board for the tri-county areas and am currently serving the final year of my term as an elected official for Humboldt General Hospital as a Hospital Board Trustee.

I have served the community as an individual, and I have served the community as an elected official, and I believe I have the most diverse experience. I hope you will consider my qualifications when you cast your vote.

Question #2: discuss your philosophy and goals for the office My philosophy is to bring my vast experience to assist the Recorder’s Office to not only maintain it’s already high level of excellence, but to also allow for changes and technological growth in the future.

I believe that over the last 100 years the greatest challenge that a Recorder’s Office has faced is adjusting to the advance of technology.

Documents were originally recorded on paper, by hand with a pen.

With the creation of the Kodak Microfilm System, documents were then recorded on microfilm, microfiche, and film reels, changing not only the manner of recordation but also the method of data storage. This again changed with the advance of electronic data storage, document scanning, and of course the current use of a system of electronic recording.

Over the last 32 years, I have adapted to changes from paper recording to microfilm use, and then to the current use of electronic data storage.

I believe as technology continues to change in the future, I will be able to seamlessly adapt the processes in the Recorder’s Office to meet those changes.

Lange, Tia Humboldt County voters have common sense and are intelligent people who know the value of their tax dollar, and therefore, know the value of on-the-job experience. It is the expectation of the taxpayer(s) to be represented by a competent Recorder who can assist with on-the-spot recordings, be it a deed or mining claims, and know the NRS’ to be followed, as well as the indexing rules per ‘The Established Rules of ARMA’. It is also expected that the Recorder will know how to assist land owners and researchers with the 160 years of documents and maps maintained in the office.

These qualities can only be acquired through on-the-job experience, repetition and an enthusiasm to learn. My on-the-job experience as a deputy recorder in the Recorder’s Office since 2014, has provided me with extensive knowledge of the duties required to run the office in an efficient manner. I have put in the time and work, and I have the enthusiasm and skills required to serve the public. I complete many of the month-end reports submitted to county and state offices, and will continue to work effectively with them. I am reliable and competent and often-times trusted to run the office when the Recorder is unavailable. I was raised by an ex-Marine who gave me the gift of a strong work ethic and pride in a job well done, and I would be honored to serve Humboldt County with these traits as the next Recorder.

As your elected official, it is my responsibility to be present in the office to serve the public and assist with my knowledge and experience.

I will ensure the office follows the requirements set forth in NRS 247 and taxpayers are assisted efficiently and competently by a knowledgeable and pleasant staff. I will have monthly meetings with office personnel to gather ideas and discuss any concerns or questions. I will continue to work cohesively with the other county and state offices. I will stay up-to-date with Nevada Legislature changes and any impact they have in the office. Currently, the office is working on several projects including the uploading and indexing of older records, prior to 1996. From 1862 to 1963 documents were recorded in specific books, which are still accessible in the office. In 1963, everything became “official records” and microfilmed. In 1996, documents were digitalized.

On the Humboldt County website, documents are viewable to 1996.

I will continue to work on getting documents prior to 1996 available online for the public to view; continue to scan in and replace the old parcel, mining and record of survey maps that are of poor quality.

Continuation of ongoing preservation projects currently in place for old books and documents, filed but not recorded, will be utilized by the technology money collected on each recorded document. I will continue to inform the public of all of the interesting and historical documents maintained within the Recorder’s Office.

I have three wonderful children, an adorable grandchild, a loving wife, and my parents. We have called Humboldt County home for over 40 years. I attended and graduated from Lowry High School, and I have dedicated my life, and focused my career, to the citizens and the community that I love.

I have been serving with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office since February 2002. Twenty years experience protecting and serving this community. I have worked many specialized assignments during my career qualifying me for the position of Sheriff.

These assignments include the Jail, Patrol, Investigations, Coroner, Community Policing, Court Security, and DARE Instructor. My DARE career alone spans over 17 years.

Prior to deciding to run for Sheriff, I have always been a community-oriented Deputy. I consistently stay in contact with the community, Senior Center, schools, businesses, and community events. As your Sheriff, I will not change that. You will still see me out in the community.

Rorex, Andy I joined the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and took an oath to defend the constitution of the United States of America and the beliefs we live by. I never wavered from this path, having served under several Sheriffs and Chiefs. I have learned what works and what doesn’t, I have taken the best leadership skills from each administrator, leadership education, and life skills, and created my own style. This means working together and trusting one another to solve issues relating to our Sheriff’s office, our county, our state, and our country.

As Sheriff, I will work with other law enforcement agencies as a team, together we will be tough on criminals that plague our community. Law enforcement is not individualized, no one agency can stand alone. That is why we need to mend fences and cross the bridge together as a team.

I started as a detention deputy; tested and transferred to the patrol division, became a Field training officer, assisted in establishing the first Humboldt County SWAT team, I am an instructor in many aspects of law enforcement including DARE, active shooter, and range. I had an opportunity and transferred to detectives, once completed I transferred to the Tri-County Drug task force as a narcotics detective. I continued to challenge myself and was promoted to a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office patrol Sergeant.

I was given the opportunity by Sheriff Allen to work for him as a Captain. I oversaw Detention, Central Control, and Dispatch. I oversaw budgets, civilian as well as sworn personnel as part of my duties. I was the commander of the multi-jurisdictional SWAT team and in charge of the Humboldt County Search and Rescue team. I had the honor to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, which is an invitation-only worldwide leadership school.

I am married to Courtney Rorex and together, we have raised two great boys. We own a small successful catering business, The Prehistoric Pit. I believe in family, friends, and community.

The Sheriff’s race is about electing the best person and leader to serve Humboldt County. It is about getting divisions inside the Sheriff’s Office and the community outside the office to work together for a common goal. I have always put the safety of the people I work with and the safety of this community first. Moser, Ronald Hello! My name is Ron Moser and I want to thank you for considering me to be your Humboldt County School Board Seat B representative!

I was born and raised on a farm in Orovada. I attended 1st through 8th grade at Orovada Elementary school.

My 7th-8th grade classes were the first in Orovada to offer a computer and an Algebra class! After finishing school at Orovada I attended McDermitt Combined for my Freshman year of high school. Sophomore through senior years were completed at Albert Lowry High School where I finished with an honors diploma in 1993. After high school I attended UNR for a little over 3 years until I started working at the Pinson Mine outside of Golconda Nevada. I have worked for

the Nevada Department of Transportation, numerous mines, Carwill, Norco, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office as well as numerous farms and ranches and of late Carter Agri-systems.

My oldest son Tom attended a year of school at Paradise Valley followed by Grass Valley then French Ford, the Winnemucca Junior High and finally Lowry High school where he is currently a Junior. My youngest son Jon attended Grass Valley, French Ford and is now an 8th grader at the Winnemucca Junior High.

I have spent quite a bit of time at every school in Humboldt County at some point! I feel that I have a great background concerning the rural school challenges and the extra work and effort it takes the teachers, parents and students to prosper in these environments. After Covid hit our county jumped immense hurdles to continue to serve our students and families and I feel we are on a great path looking forward towards meeting all our future goals and needs. It is extremely difficult to be positively proactive in all aspects of situations that arise concerning out schools and their needs. I feel it is our greatest responsibility to be “readily reactive” concerning these instances. To have a situation/ need arise; jointly form a plan of action and see it through with future reoccurring benefits to me is a recipe for success.

Stewart, Patrice I’m Patrice Stewart and I’m excited to be running for a seat on the Humboldt County School Board. I’m 24 years old and I attended Humboldt County schools K-12. I am a 2016 Lowry graduate. After high school, I attended Wade Black’s nationally renowned Horse Production program at Treasure Valley College in Ontario, Oregon. In 2019, I graduated from TVCC with Applied Science degrees in Horse Production and Ranch Management. I currently breed, train and sell ranch and performance horses and work on my family ranch in Paradise Valley. My other passion is rodeo. I barrel race on the pro-circuit and enjoy competing very much. I’m running for School Board because I think it’s time that the Administration, staff and board members regularly hear from a younger person about our view of education in Humboldt County. I can readily relate to the challenges that students face, because I was recently one of them. When I was at Lowry, kids like me, who wanted to pursue a practical education rather than a traditional 4 year college degree, kind of got looked down on. The same was true for students who entered the military or job force right out of school. From the way scholarships were given out to the way teachers and advisors sometimes treated us, it was disappointing. I’m a big believer in technical education because our world needs mechanics, plumbers, soldiers, hair dressers, electricians, welders, horse trainers and cooks just as much as we need new doctors and lawyers.

I almost get sick when I watch the news these days and see what passes for education in some big cities. I understand that a small district like Humboldt County cannot dictate every page in text books, but our School Board can make certain things a priority. For me, those priorities are getting the basics right. It’s no good for kids to get to high school unable to read, do grade level math, write a coherent letter, or understand and fill out a job application. We need to focus on making sure that every student gets the basics, and the skills to succeed, and leave CRT and other nonsense to the big city idiots. We need to teach real US History and Constitution, not the WOKE version that teaches kids to hate our country and divides us. We need to ensure that every student, whether they live in Winnemucca or 70 miles out at McDermitt or Denio, have access to the same great educational opportunities. I’ll be a strong advocate for every student and family, and I’ll champion technical education and school to work programs just as much as I’ll support gifted and advanced programs because our goal should be successful outcomes for every student. When it comes to school, or life for that matter, one size does not fit all, and we’ve got to do better to respect more than one path. I have a history in many areas of concern to the residents of Pershing County. I was raised farming and left the farm when I enlisted in the Army.

I completed a tour of duty in Viet Nam and was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) when I was honorably discharged at the end of my enlistment. I have spent 45 + years mining with 20 years underground and the rest on the surface. I was a supervisor and manager for much of that time. I have held three different Nevada contracting licenses, a General Contractor, Paving & Excavating, and Electrical. I have a great deal of experience in many different areas and believe in listening more than speaking. If elected I would be a representative of and for the Pershing County Residents.

Question 2: Discuss your philosophy and goals for the office if you are elected.

I believe that the county should be operated like an efficient business and the officials are elected by the shareholders of that business to represent their best interest when making decisions that govern Pershing County.

I believe there should be plans in place that: 1. Address the best practices for running the County on a day to day basis.

2. Have a short term plan for the next 1-5 years.

3. Look farther into the future past the 5 year plan.

When looking at these plans they should be a good fit with the resources in Pershing County and; how can we expand and increase those resources without depleting them? Plan ways to best support the residents and businesses already in Pershing County with our current resources? How can we expand our tax base by bringing in new businesses. Help expand and grow the businesses already serving our residents and visitors. Work to draw in new customers passing on the interstate. Research industries that could benefit from our location and would help expand our infrastructure to meet their requirements to locate here. I would look into Vocational education as a way to draw in students to our area and provide the work force to staff the current and future requirements. Good jobs and furthering their education locally, can help keep our young people here at home.

Skelton, David I am David Skelton running for Pershing County Commissioner, retired Senior Field Service Engineer used to trouble shooting complex technologies with interrelating variables to achieve problem resolution. Employing my experience, knowledge, common sense, observation, asking and getting answers to relevant questions. Though my background is technical simple can be more eloquent and reliable than complex.

To provide direction and support for county employees to do their jobs. I would like to continue my efforts for the benefit of our community.

Chopp, Mike

My name is Mike Chopp, and I am seeking your vote for Lander County Commission District 2. My wife Kelli and I have been married for 22 wonderful years and have 3 awesome kids! My oldest son, Mason graduated from Battle Mountain High School and our 2 younger children, Nolan and Jenna currently attend Lander County Schools. We are proud to say that Battle Mountain is our “HOME”. I work for Nevada gold Mines and have been at the Phoenix site for 17 years. My wife works for the School District.

I was appointed to the Lander County School Board in 2016; was elected in 2018; and have served as chair for the past two years. My decision to run for the county commission, and not seek re-election for the school board, was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made. I truly believe that the school district is in the strongest position ever financially, and it is staffed with the most competent, capable, and trusting individuals to maintain and guide us in the right direction.

My experience running public meetings, overseeing public spending, and monitoring our appointed leaders makes me particularly qualified to help at the county level. I believe I can make a difference in protecting the funds that Lander County has been fortunate to receive and hold leaders accountable for fiscal integrity without seeking personal gain.

My decision to serve on the county commission is based on a desire to have Lander County represented by people of integrity who put taxpayers before self-interest. I believe it is our responsibility, as public servants, to act in ways that benefit every citizen, not just those in positions of authority.

We need POSITIVE change immediately in our local government and I want to be part of that change. Our county has built up a windfall because of the benefits of net proceeds. My goal will be to work with members of this commission, and individuals of this community to stop the out-of-control spending of taxpayer monies being spent on personal agendas. It is the responsibility of local government to act in a way to protect what is generate in Lander County.

I have dedicated myself to this community because of my passion for Lander County. Exampled by: I managed the youth football for 14 years and continue to volunteer for the HS football and wrestling programs. All of this, however, is of little value if our county is not managed with integrity.

Hanks, Shannon I moved to Battle Mountain, in 1987, with my mother Bev Huntington.

In 1988, I graduated from Battle Mountain High School. I began my working career with First Federal Bank. While raising our daughters, I worked in a few various jobs, such as the Battle Mountain Clinic. As our children grew older, I took a job, where I was promoted to a managerial position. Taking a big leap of faith, a mining position became available, and that is where my mining career began, a field I still work in today. Over the last 18 years, my career in mining has given me extensive training in business.

Throughout my years of training, I have been given the opportunity to learn how to team build, communications, and business ethics. Aside from my career, I have spent countless years volunteering for numerous organizations within our community. For any of you who knew my mother Bev, you know that I was raised with the understanding of giving back to the community you live in. I appreciate the fact that I have made time to help others, and I enjoy it hugely. I believe people need to be heard, and respected. If I were to be elected, I would bring my business knowledge, both financial and ethical thinking forward. I truly love our community and would like to have the opportunity to bring a positive perspective to the table.

Throughout my career, like others, I have faced struggles. I have risen above and challenged myself to learn and expand my knowledge.

Rising to the occasion and finding a solution to problems is something I enjoy doing. I believe for an individual to grow, they must be willing to embrace change and compromise. Stepping out of one’s comfort zone is a necessity. I believe working as a cohesive team with the other County Commissioners I can bring great things to Lander County as a whole. The mines have been wonderful to Lander County, and we are doing very well because of them. However, the price of gold is fluid. Expanding our horizons is a necessity. It is my hope to be part of the solution.

Lindsey, Joe I moved to Battle Mountain in 1986 and went to work for Tenneco Minerals at the McCoy Mine; I worked there until being laid off in 2000. I worked three years for the Lander County Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer and for a short time at the Marigold Mine as a mechanic before applying for the Building Official position with Lander County.

I was proud to accept the position as Building Official in 2004 and worked until 2015 at which time I retired from the position. My duties included departmental budgeting, working with the Planning Department, construction managers, civil and structural engineers, building contractors, state, federal and local and governmental agencies as well as members of the public to insure that all projects were compliant prior to beginning construction.

Having lived and worked in Lander County for the last 36 years, I have seen many changes in the local government, some positive and some questionable. I feel changes are needed at this time and believe, with my past experience with the county, I could work with the board of commissioners as well as other elected officials in order to help the citizens of Lander County bring about much needed changes.

Governmental transparency, fiscal accountability, honesty, efficiency, courtesy, all without personal or special interest should be paramount goals of every elected official in their decision making process.

Price, Monte L. I have lived in Lander County for the past 30 years with my wife of 45 years where I have worked in the ranching industry and raised our family. Being recently retired I feel I have the time, knowledge and skills to give back to the citizens of Lander County. I have gained extensive experience and knowledge in public land use, wildlife resource development, water rights, rangeland fire suppression and personnel management. I have successfully worked with the Bureau of Land Management in grazing, permitting and water development. I have experience

in creating balanced budgets, often with limited resources. This experience will help me as a commissioner.

I am community minded and during the past served as a volunteer coach for youth football, girls softball, shooting sports, youth rodeo, Christian rodeo camp and church youth group.

Since 2007, I have enjoyed serving on Lander County Planning Commission. Using the knowledge I have gained about the Lander County master plan for growth will help me be a better commissioner if I am elected.

LANDER COUNTY RECORDER Bisiaux, Tina Marie I, Tina Marie Bisiaux, am a candidate for the office of Recorder for Lander County. As a citizen of Lander County for nearly 35 years, I appreciate the nuances of this area that set it apart from neighboring counties. Lander County is my home.

The Recorder’s office is a vibrant, busy place that requires consistent interactions with members of the public. My siblings and I worked in a family-owned business throughout my childhood. I know the importance of exemplary, respectful, customer service. Meeting the needs of the constituents of Lander County while protecting the recorded documents that tell its history is primary to the Recorder’s position. All employees within this office are charged with helping the public attend to the details of the information being recorded and to assure the accuracy of the historical documents being researched. Ultimately, the Recorder must assure that all work done in the office is of the highest standard.

For many years I volunteered in the local Genealogical Library. This work included accessing records to assist others as they researched land records, civil filings, and other legal documents. I have decades of experience working with microfiche, microfilm, and large volumes of records. I have bought and sold property in Lander County. I know the significance of accurate, concise, and easily accessible records.

The Recorder position is challenging as it requires that one understands employment and budgeting standards, including the management of personnel. My professional and educational background includes training others to fill the requirements of their positions, along with providing for needed changes within the office. I own a business in Lander County, and I have been managing offices for more than 20 years. I am licensed with the State of Nevada as a trained Supervisor, and I have completed a master’s degree in Human Resources Management.

The experiences I’ve listed here, along with many others, provide the groundwork for me to meet the requirements of the office of Recorder of Lander County.

It is my belief that elected officials answer directly to the citizenry.

They are elected to serve. I am fully vested in Lander County and will work to assure the Recorder’s office continues to meet the needs of our citizens.

Reiva, Alexis “Lexi” My name is Alexis Reiva and I am running for Lander County Recorder.

I moved to Battle Mountain over 12 years ago to start and raise a family with my husband Preston. I worked for a real estate company acquiring extensive title experience that has been pertinent as a current Lander County Deputy Recorder. I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of this team dedicating ourselves to providing accurate, impartial and efficient recordings. Along with

being a Deputy Recorder, I have also been an intricate part of DMV. I have worked alongside our current elected official to gain all the necessary experience and knowledge to smoothly run the Recorders office and the local DMV. The Recorders Office handles numerous types of documents including mining claims, maps, marriages, real estate and other miscellaneous recordings. I have recorded a full range of documents reviewing them for accuracy and completeness in accordance with Nevada Revised Statutes and department policy. I have been trained on and completed month end reports that are filed with the Lander County Treasurer and State offices. Having run my own business for several years, I have ample experience with budgeting and best practices. Participating in and belonging to the Recorders Association of Nevada and County Fiscal Officers Association where we have discussed current and newly proposed legislative laws has offered me profound insight and firsthand knowledge into the background of a Recorders responsibilities. If elected I will continue to offer outstanding service to the residents of Lander County.

If elected Lander County Recorder, I will continue broadening our technological advances while still nurturing our customer relationships.

Working directly with the residents of Lander County and preserving our rich history is incredibly important to me as everything we record in this office is a part of all our history. Indexing of documents is a crucial aspect of the Recorders work ensuring safe keeping and allowing for them to be easily accessible. Having experience with web design I would like to revamp our Recorders webpage to offer informative and educational resources while maintaining a user friendly platform for ease of navigation. All innovations will be designed with the customer in mind. Protecting, preserving, and recording vital documents in a methodical manner as per NRS 247 is always a first priority. I will continue to carry the contract with DMV and strive to meet our customer’s needs. This is an important service to our county both in Battle Mountain and Austin offices. This isn’t just a job to me, it’s a passion for committing myself to others and this county. It would be my honor to be the steward of over 160 years of our county’s history. Domagala, Mitch I’m Mitch Domagala and I am running for a seat on the Lander County School Board. I have lived in Battle Mountain for 28 years and it is here that I met my wife and raised my family. I have two children that have graduated from Lander County Schools. I feel that my experience as a parent and a long-time educator provides me with a unique perspective into the operations of the school district.

I have taught history at Battle Mountain High School for the past 16 years and before that I taught special education at BMHS for 12 years. I have also coached football and wrestling at all levels from youth through high school for over 30 years. The one constant thing that I have seen over that time is that kids genuinely want to succeed. Regardless of their ability level when they start, all kids can and will improve if given the right opportunities. I am a firm believer in organization, structure, attention to detail and accountability for everyone involved.

One key thing that I have learned over time is that constant preparation is vital to prolonged success. I have used this philosophy over the duration of my career. Instead of focusing on wins and losses, I emphasize focusing on preparation. By doing so and adjusting bit by bit, we learn from what works and what doesn’t and we use that knowledge to keep improving. It is through this process of constant improvement that we are willing to try new things to see what works and modify to keep making progress. As education strives to meet the pressures and demands that are being placed upon it, we are going to have to keep adapting our methods to be able to ensure that all students are able to constantly improve as they go through our schools.

As a board member, it would be my responsibility to be the voice of the communities as well as the advocate for the students of the school district. I believe it is my job to work with the other board members and the superintendent to make sure the district is financially stable, that we have strong academic leaders as our administrators, and that the teachers and staff have what they need to be able to provide the highest quality education for our students in order to prepare them for their future.

My name is Manuel Villanueva and I’m running for Lander County School Board. I’ve been a resident of Battle Mountain since 1979. I’m a proud Longhorn from the Class of 1994. I met my wife 28 years ago while attended BMHS. Together we’ve raised three sons in this great community. I have volunteered in my community for many years, coaching little league, junior football, teaching catechism, being a member of the Knights of Columbus, and volunteering for multiple events with my employers Newmont and now Nevada Gold Mines. I started getting involved at the schools’ sponsoring students through the MTC Scholarship program. I helped managed the program for Newmont where during my time we sponsored and helped develop over 300 technicians. Most of those students came from the local High Schools in the communities in which we operated.

Today I continue to work on that program for NGM at the Phoenix Mine.

I serve as a member of the Mining Outreach Committee where we try to educate local high school students about career opportunities within the mining industry. I’ve been a school board member for three years.

I served my district during a very difficult time, and I would love your support to continue to work on the challenges it has left us.

If elected I will continue to support our Superintendent, Administrators, and Staff to accomplish our mission. “All students will be prepared, literate, and confident in their ability to take charge of their future and contribute to their community”. This can only be done by focusing on the following: Attraction and Retention of teachers and staff by providing competitive compensation packages along with development opportunities. We will need to continue to support the “Grow Our Own” program to develop our future teachers, administrators, and staff. Academically we need to work on Digital Effectiveness, Career Exploration, and Mastery-Based Learning. We need to continue to provide strong Career and Technical Education offerings. We need to continue our partnership with the mines, providing career exploration opportunities.

Mining provides great career choices, and our students should be made aware of them. Lastly, we need to start putting a stronger focus on the mental well-being of our students. We currently have a counselor and/or social worker in every building. We need ensure they’re provided with the necessary resources and support they need to help our students. My name is Colt Nelson, and I am running for Lander County School Board Area One. Why should you vote for me? I love this community and county and am a fourth-generation resident of Battle Mountain. All seven of my children and stepchildren graduated from Battle Mountain High School, and my grandchildren will graduate here as well. I have grave concerns about the state of public education and am motivated to be a part of the changes needed to turn things around.

As one of seven board members, the following will be my focus: Continuous Improvement – I would approach my role on the school board looking for opportunities to build on what is working and be data driven as we improve our school system. This is done by building strong relationships at all levels of the education system here in Lander County. I have almost 40 years of experience in the mining industry with over half of those years in senior leadership roles. I have experience and expertise in continuous improvement systems. I would bring that experience into this role as we support each other through the complex issues facing us today.

Restore Local Control – We have allowed the federal and state departments of education as well as our elected legislators to overreach and to take control of our system. They have implemented rules and regulations that control curriculum, expose children to inappropriate content, undermines discipline and allows for very little local school district control. As one of seven board members, I will work to find win/ win situations that follow the US and Nevada Constitutions as well as Lander County ordinates and also ensure the local staff and community have input into what is best for Lander County students. The school board needs to act as a safeguard against mandates and overreach by the state and federal government. Academic achievement must be the focus of our system and federal and state policies that do not support us need to be addressed.

Ensure a Safe and Orderly Learning Environment for Staff and Students – As a member of the school board, I would explore all regulations and laws affecting safety and ensuring an orderly learning environment in all Lander County schools. Regulations and laws must benefit the teachers and students in the classroom so they can focus on learning. Current laws, policies and procedures significantly undermine administrators’ and teachers’ authority. I would address policies and procedures that are not good for our staff, students and community. We need to ensure students are respectful and responsible in school. I will support the return to local control for administrators so they can lead with authority.

Leadership – I believe everything rises and falls on good leadership. Good leadership rises and falls on good relationships. Good relationships rise and fall on good communications. As a Lander County school board member, I will work with the superintendent and school leaders to develop solid relationships and ensure open, transparent communications within the school system and community.

Hello, my name is Bartolo “Bert” Ramos, and I am running for Lander County School Board Area One. I love this community and county and I am a product of Battle Mountain High School.

I grew up in Southern Lander County (Austin) and hope to return someday.

For the last 7 years, I have lived in Battle Mountain with my wife, Ashley, and my 3 daughters, Aylea (17), Ashlyn (15), and Adaley (7). I am running for school board because I have concerns with the state of public education and I am motivated to make and lead the changes necessary to improve Lander County School District.

Nevada’s education has consistently averaged 50th in the nation for the last decade, and as a result, 70-95% of Nevada students are functionally illiterate. Recently, Lander County School District has averaged in the lowest quartile out of all 17 Nevada counties. More specifically, according to the NV Department of Education website for the 20-21 school year 19% of students in grades 3-8 are proficient in math, while 34% are proficient in English Language Arts. This is a dramatic decline from our prior rankings. My top priority as a school board member is the children of our community. I will work to ensure that any laws, regulations and policies put in place will benefit the students and staff in each classroom so that the focus can be on teaching and learning the foundational skills of reading, writing and mathematics. This will include bringing back parental input and involvement in their child’s education including curriculum, and the use of technology.

While serving on the school board, I hope to achieve the restoration of local control. For too long, we have allowed stakeholders at a federal and state level to make decisions for us in Lander County.

This has proved to not work, immediate stakeholders, such as families, community members, and staff should work together to address the specific educational needs of Lander County students. I will work diligently to uphold my oath of office and the constitution to ensure input and accountability that benefit our children.

Lastly, I believe the long term vision of a school board should be to provide leadership and map out ways to help all students reach their full potential. I am a product of the Lander County public school system having graduated from Battle Mountain High class of 85.

I also served in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard for just over 21 years and retired in 2012. This is my first time running for any sort of public office.

Goals: To ensure that our children are not being indoctrinated with Communist/ Socialist ideologies (i.e. CRT, 1619 project, etc.)

Stanton, Douglas S III 1. My name is Doug Staton, and I am running for reelection as the Area 3 trustee on the Lander County School Board of Trustees. I am a 15-year resident of Battle Mountain. My wife is an educator in the district and my daughter is a senior at Battle Mountain High School. I have a background in Music Education. I served as Battle Mountain PTA President for 2 years. I served as a WatchDOG in the Lander County School District for 6 years. I am a former substitute teacher in the Lander County School District and the Humboldt County School District. I am a member of the Board of Directors for the Nevada Association of School Boards.

2. My biggest goal has been to provide support to our administrators, educators, and support staff so they can provide all our children the best possible educational experience. I fully support our goal that every graduate of the Lander County School District be college or career ready upon graduation. Our children need, considering their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic, additional support, educationally, emotionally, and mentally. Over the last 4 years we have supplied both counselors and social workers at all our schools. We need to ensure that the needs of our children are being met. We have also given multiple incentives to attract and retain qualified educators in Lander County. These include the second-highest starting pay for teachers in the state of Nevada, a signing bonus, a relocation allowance, and a referral program for current employees who refer new teachers. The current board has made strides toward making all our students college and/or career ready, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to see this through to fruition.
