NON PROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID PERMIT 991 TWIN CITIES MN Our Mission! To inspire community by empowering people impacted by disabilities to live their best life. Celebrate our 50th Year! Power of Love Gala Metropolitan Ballroom Tuesday Evening, May 23rd 2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT wingspanlife.org RESILIENT FOR 49 YEARS Wingspan Life Resources 30 East Plato Boulevard St. Paul, MN 55107 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

Dear Friends,

It was another long and challenging year for Wingspan as the one-two punch of the pandemic, combined with the ongoing staffing crisis, continued to test our morale and our endurance.

Once again, our management teams and our direct care staff stepped up to ensure that the well-being of our Residential and In-Home clients remains our number one priority. I am so very grateful for the resilience, compassion, and creativity of our staff. Though the pandemic has receded somewhat, we are still experiencing positive outbreaks.

Gradually, we have started to open up our main campus and we have resumed some client activities. Our first major gathering was for our summer picnic at Highland Park Pavilion. After two years of not having our picnic, it felt like a big family reunion. Staff and clients were so happy to see one another, to enjoy a meal together, and to sing and dance with “Elvis.” Laughter alone was music to our ears.

We also resumed some of our client enrichment activities including a mosaic class, a music and motion class, and a drumming class. As always, our clients participated with great enthusiasm and brilliant success–the joy of achievement clearly visible in their smiles.

*A family member is being served or has been served by Wingspan.

Their genuine praise and encouragement of one another is always so heartwarming. Currently, Glee Club is back in session after a two-year hiatus and several new members have been welcomed into the group. Although we have had to suspend our annual Magnolia Ball for our clients, we are optimistic that we can hold our dance next April as scheduled. Your donation of any size will help support this wonderful event.

By contrast, our bright moments of joy are tempered with the sadness of loss. We lost five clients again this year, and most recently, a beloved member of our staff, Joel Olaniyi. You can read more about Joel in our feature story about Thomas House in this issue. As grief rippled throughout our organization, we relied on one another for comfort. Anne Perry, House Coordinator for our 1250 Hoyt group home and winner of this year’s Leadership Award, reminded all of us at our staff appreciation event, “We are a small company, but a very big family.” That sense of community, that sense of family, is what makes Wingspan so very special.

We send our very special thanks to our Board of Directors for their support and diligence, and we are grateful for every donor, sponsor, volunteer and vendor who generously supported us this past year. Your contributions make meaningful impacts. Thank you for choosing Wingspan for your year-end giving.

From our very big family to yours, we wish you a happy, healthy holiday season.

Spotlight on Thomas House

The residents of our Thomas House group home in Minneapolis have mourned, along with us, the recent passing of their beloved House Coordinator, Joel Olaniyi. Joel joined Wingspan nine years ago, shortly after arriving to the U.S. from Nigeria. He started as a Direct Support Professional and was promoted to House Coordinator. He was completely devoted to the women of Thomas House, always going the extra mile, ensuring that his focus was on their physical and mental wellbeing. He kept the house in excellent condition, and the lush green lawn was the envy of the neighborhood. Joel had an infectious smile and was always cheerful and positive. He was a man of faith, quick to offer a prayer to anyone in need, always kind, compassionate and respectful. Joel was also a very private man, never revealing his own health challenges, only thinking of others and how to be of service. He will be deeply missed, but always in our hearts.

The women of Thomas House include Lori, Mary Ann and Renee. Lori loves her family and her Wingspan housemates. She is thoughtful and attentive, always happy to help a housemate or a staff. She enjoys music, going to church, and attending Wingspan events. She also likes going to the grocery store to help staff with weekly purchases. Lori goes to day program at Opportunity Partners. She painted a beautiful canvas in Joel’s memory and this will be displayed at our Plato campus as a loving tribute.

Mary Ann and Renee are sports fans. They love the Minnesota Twins, the Vikings and the Timberwolves. They are often dressed in team themed clothing and hats. Mary Ann also loves listening to music. In the summer they make good use of the large gazebo that covers their back deck. Soon, they will meet a new housemate, Tina, who is moving to Thomas House from our Portland Place home. She will be a most welcome addition to this wonderful home. Together they will have many new adventures traveling in “the Bob Mobile”– lovingly named in memory of Lori’s brother-in law.

With gratitude for Joel – and to all of our staff who truly help make each house a home.

Thank You, Bill!

Bill Hamer joined Wingspan’s Board in 2011. We are so very grateful for his past service. Bill and his wife, Ginger, have supported Wingspan with financial gifts and many hours of volunteer service. In addition to sponsoring our Made in the Shade event, they have sponsored our Power of Love Gala and served as Gala Co-Chairs in 2021.

Bill’s sister, Gail, has been a resident of our Portland Avenue “Golden Girls” group home since 2008. The Hamer family regularly helped with yard beautification at our Golden Girls home, and they always looked forward to their family photo opp at our Made in the Shade Event.

We’ve appreciated Bill’s thoughtfulness, wisdom, advocacy, and passion for our mission. Though Bill has stepped off the Board, he and his family will always be part of Wingspan’s family.

Person-Centered Enrichment Programs

Meet Asha

Asha joined our Wingspan Family at 16th Avenue house in July of 2021. Though blind since birth, she is always open to trying new things and leads a full and busy life. Asha swims on a Special Olympics team, likes to exercise daily, and loves to do looming and puzzles. She is a natural leader and has gotten her housemates involved in doing games and puzzles together after dinner. Asha also enjoys going to the library to get books on tape. She loves to cook, reads recipes in braille, and particularly enjoys spicy food of her culture. She cooks for her housemates on Saturdays, gets input from her housemates, and adds necessary items to the weekly grocery list. She loves gardening, and last year her mom bought her rose bushes which she tends along with other flowers. Asha goes to work through her day program at Opportunity Partners.

In the Spring of 2022, Asha participated with many other Wingspan clients in two classes offered through a partnership with Compas.org. She excelled in both the Drum Circle Class, taught by Compas.org teaching artist Mike Arturi, and in the Mosaic Class taught by Compas teaching artist and mosaicist, Anne Krocak. Currently Asha is a new member of our Glee Club and keeps perfect rhythm for the group with her tambourine using techniques learned in drum class. We are inspired by Asha and her many interests and talents.

More Emerging Artists

Jenny and Jayne live at Glenpaul house and are hearing impaired. They were able to Zoom in for Mosaic Class and were assisted by an ASL interpreter who helped them understand the directions. Both of their pieces, along with Asha’s and other participants’ pieces, form part of the big mosaic bird that hangs in our lobby.

take people out of themselves for a few hours.”

Along with other mosaic class members, Jenny and Jayne also decorated picture frames with mosaic tiles. Their housemate, Kaylla, participated in the Music and Motion class we conducted by Zoom with Compas teaching artist Dylan Fresco.

The Beat Goes On

Fifteen clients and their staff participated in Drumming Circle class last spring with Compas teaching artist and professional drummer Mike Arturi. Mike has been the touring drummer for the rock group, the Lovin Spoonful. Anthony, Barry, and Jack from Demont House were among the participants who got to work with many types of percussion instruments over a 7-week residency. Barry and Jack are also regular members of Glee Club.

We are grateful for individual donors and grantmakers, including the Minnesota Regional Arts Council and the Janice Gardner Foundation for providing funding for these wonderful art & music programs.

Volunteering

Our volunteers mean the world to us! Our most critical need is for yard beautification, especially in the Spring and Fall. While our Direct Support Professionals are busy tending to the needs of our clients, it is not always possible to devote extra time to taking care of our lawns and gardens. We’ll match you to your preferred location, provide the tools, and we’ll have plenty refreshments.

These are wonderful opportunities for scouts, fraternities, sororities, or for church and school service projects as well. We’re always looking for volunteers to paint designs on our gourd birdhouses that are top sellers in our gala silent auction. Art students from Minnetonka High School have partnered with us for the past two years. We welcome calls from art teachers who have interested students.

Volunteers from Associated Bank participate through their Roots in Our Community program, helping us every year with painting projects or yard work. We can always count on our friends from Yale Alumni of the Northwest to choose Wingspan for their annual Yale Day of Service. We also welcomed Eagle Building Company and Mahoney CPAs and Advisors as first-time volunteers.

Rewarding our Amazing Staff

Our staff work hard to bring joy into the lives of those we serve. Though the staffing crisis has been unyielding, we have worked closely with our Board and Executive Team to develop several mitigation strategies to strengthen and reward our workforce. We implemented Sign-Up Bonuses and Referral Bonuses to attract and retain new hires. We increased wages for all employees and paid out two bonuses last year using our Employee Retention Credit funds. These expenses were significant and are critical to a sustainable future. We are good stewards of our dollars and Wingspan remains financially strong.

We continue to raise our voices with our legislators to advocate for policy and regulatory changes to outdated methodology in order to increase state reimbursement for services. We have increased our social media presence, deepened donor relationships, and expanded volunteer recruitment by advancing our community engagement efforts. As part of our strategic planning process we will continue bolster our organization’s infrastructure to support growth.

Thank you for valuing the vital work of our staff and for partnering in our success.
