Wingspan’s Got Talent! On a recent Saturday afternoon, many Wingspan clients competed for prizes in our third annual Wingspan’s Got Talent event. The enjoyable afternoon included songs, dance, a saxophone solo, artwork and an original poem. The judges, as usual, had difficulty selecting just three acts. We were completely charmed by entertainers such as Tommy Boy on guitar, John D. and his backup singers, a demonstration in wreath-making by In-Home’s Sherry, and the entirety of 11th Avenue, staff and residents, in blond wigs, singing as The Brady Bunch. But finally, Mika Melton, Frank Merrill and I came up with the big winners: John (In-Home) took first place with his soulful jazz sax version of, “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone.” Laura, Oakland’s newest resident, presented paintings that blew everyone away. The oil on canvas paintings were the most beloved by all, and got her second place. And then Tina, 1250 Hoyt’s newest resident, took down the house with her Hip Hop dance review complete with vocals. She took home third place. The cookie buffet afterward gave all a chance to personally congratulate the winners and assure others that next year would be the charm! ~Maureen Merrill~
