Dear Friends, I am so very honored to have been part of Wingspan’s growth and success for over 41 of our 45 years. It’s been a truly incredible journey. My mind is rich with lovely memories, and I am privileged to work alongside an engaged Board of Directors, to lead and partner with such dedicated staff, and to be connected to our clients and their families. Though many of you, like me, Wingspan leaders have grown weary and frustrated John and Therese with the continuous and often contentious streaming of political issues, I would be remiss if I did not share with you the devastating impact that lack of legislative cooperation has had on Wingspan and organizations like ours this past year. Many of you are aware of the astonishing 7% funding cut to Home and Community Based Services. At a time when we were battling for a modest 4% increase, the news of a cut cast a very dark shadow. Our service area has been experiencing the worst staffing crisis ever, and Wingspan has not been exempt from this misfortune. The combination of low unemployment and low wages for incredibly important work has packed a powerful punch. Despite the cut, we made a decision along with our Board, to provide a modest wage increase. This is not something we had budgeted for, and it means we are going to rely more than ever on people like YOU to help us meet funding gaps.

We are fortunate to have so many committed staff members. Many of them have had to pick up extra shifts to cover staffing gaps. We recognize that this has an impact on personal and family time. Yet, our staff serve with grace and compassion – managing medications and behaviors, not just taking care of basic needs such as feeding and bathing – but working hard to provide them with a quality of life that allows for new experiences, strong friendships, and the opportunity to lead a full life. For many of our clients, we are the only family they have ever known. For those of you who attended town hall meetings, called your legislators, and encouraged friends and families to persuade decision makers to do the right thing, we thank you. Our battles are not over. It is so important that you keep using your voice and your vote to ensure a better outcome for the future. For those of you have given so generously by donating and volunteering, know that these gifts are deeply valued. And, notwithstanding the legislative setback, all of us are committed to making the best of a difficult situation – knowing that the brightest lights on the horizon can be found in the eyes of those we are honored to care for. Therese Davis, Executive Director

In Loving Memory Wingspan remembers these beloved members of our community who died during the past year.

Forever in our hearts...

St. Ann’s Residence Wingspan began in 1973 as St. Ann’s, under the auspices of Catholic Charities. St. Ann’s, originally a convent, was home for 30 women with developmental disabilities. In 1992, Catholic Charities ended its affiliation and St. Ann’s became a separate non-profit. St. Ann’s closed the 30-bed residence in 1999, moved the clients to seven small homes in Hennepin County, and in 2000 changed its name to Wingspan Life Resources to better reflect the expansion of services and outreach.

In the above photo (back row left to right), you will see that we still have several staff that have been with us since the early days, including Executive Director Therese Davis (41 years of service), Program Director Jeff Hager (34 years), Program Director Maureen Merrill (43 years), Direct Support Professional Debi Rattler (32 years), and House Coordinator Mary Austin (30 years). Several clients from St. Ann’s are still with us including Carol, Dot, Linda L., Andrea, Nancy, Linda T., and Julie. Clients who have passed away are honored with a memorial brick in the legacy garden at our Plato campus. 3

Reflections As she was leaving her interview, a tiny, bald adorable resident named Patty tilted her head, waived to Therese and sweetly shouted, “Bye, Honey!” Those two words changed the course of Therese’s life forever as she entered into work that would become her life’s calling. “I was dumbstruck with love for this little person,” she recalls. And the residents fell in love with Therese too. Maureen, too, fell in love with the people of St. Ann’s and has said,

“How could you not fall in love with them? While my friends were off

having children or pursuing their careers, I couldn’t imagine having any other career for the rest of my life. My first job was as Counselor. At the time, St. Ann’s felt to me like a huge castle with the cooks in the kitchen, the beauty shop in the basement, amazing people living there and a lot of fun things to do with them. I couldn’t get used to having to get ladies way older than me to do things. I used to sometimes tell Viola to stay in bed; I would just brush her dentures for her. Today as I look back I realize she was about the age I am now, and was certainly capable of brushing her own dentures! What I loved best about working at St. Ann’s was the creativity of the job, how every day was different, how you might end up doing almost ANYTHING in the line of duty. In the evening, if the boiler went out, we called the church custodian and gathered up 30 extra quilts. If a toilet overflowed, we got out a plunger and fixed it. If the cook didn’t show up we called our moms and asked how to cook meatloaf for 30 people, at what temperature. If the water was acting up, we called our dads and asked how to figure out where you would look for the turnoff valve. It was seat-of-pants learning and it was wonderful!” Jeff, who originally was a cook for St. Ann’s, has shared many fond memories and is St. Ann’s Residence certain that this career has given true definition to his experience of the word “compassion.” “I was fortunate to have been here to open one of our very first group homes. What I loved most,” said Jeff, “was the ability to bring happiness to the lives of others.” This sentiment still rings true for Jeff today. Mary Austin started as a counselor. She recalls, “I loved what a happy home it was. Most of us were young staff and we just did anything that needed doing. It really was person-centered. The home was always filled with activity – popcorn and Little House on Prairie night, gardening, Valentine coronations, Halloween dances at St. Stephens (all 30 in homemade costumes!), clubs, water play (continued on next page) 4

in the backyard, Back to the 50’s dances, formal tea parties every summer for our ladies and all their families and guests, vacations, camps, baking. We so enjoyed every lady, our job and each other.” Debi Rattler started as an afternoon counselor-aide. She vividly recalls the camaraderie between staff and clients. Debi said, “I absolutely adored the ladies. They were so funny. As young staff we just made things up as we went along. I could walk in one afternoon and suggest ‘Let’s have a Hawaiian party!’ and off we would go to the backyard for fun. We were spontaneous!” These are just a few of the many special reflections from Wingspan’s rich history. We’ve been busy creating new memories ever since. Find wonderful videos featuring stories by these staff on our website, and watch for more stories in the future.

Laughter…Still the Best Medicine Looking through wonderful notes in an old threering binder that captured some of the fondest memories, we encountered a few laugh out loud gems. Here are just a few charmingly memorable commentaries by former St. Ann’s clients – all of whom have passed on but still light a corner of our hearts. For example, there was the time when Alice declared she was “sweating like a pancake” and the time Flossie observed of her housemates, “They talk about me behind my face and in front of my back.” Or the time Becky, when asked about taking another resident’s coloring book insisted, “I didn’t do it and I won’t do it again!” And, in the true spirit of competition, one resident announced, “Look, I’ve got a picture of Jesus!”only to have her housemate up the ante with, “So what, I have a pink purse!” Speaking of pancakes, there’s also a record of the time when the onstaff cook, Dorothy, inadvertently boiled the syrup just a little too long – almost to the hard candy shell point beyond the consistency of taffy. Perplexed residents couldn’t understand why they couldn’t cut through their pancakes as easily as usual, and some mouths became stuck shut. Eleanor’s false teeth were actually pulled from her mouth and stuck in her pancakes. Though panic might have quickly escalated, the staff did a great job of containing the humorous pandemonium, and the very embarrassed Dorothy was forgiven by all in a communal burst of laughter.

Today... Currently, Wingspan has 27 homes in the greater Twin Cities including one for crisis respite called Harmony House. There are plans to acquire two more homes at year-end. We have170 part and full-time employees and another 90 on-call providing vital, compassionate care.

Join us as we journey forward. 5

Closing a Chapter

O N A H IST OR IC B O O K

Wingspan had pioneered the first culture-specific adult day center for Hmong Elders in 2001. What a tremendous opportunity for us to have served so many at Tsev Laus Kaj Siab – Hmong for “place of contentment.” Now, there are many Hmong day centers in the greater Twin Cities and we decided it was time for us to step aside and let others continue so that we could focus on our other core competencies. In March, coinciding with the retirement of Program Director Joua Pao Her, we closed the day center. We thank Joua Pao, our staff, and especially the elders of Tsev laus Kaj Siab and their families for the privilege of caring for these very dear people for nearly two decades. We also thank UCare of Minnesota for their annual grant which funded the Hmong New Year Celebrations.

WINGSPAN’S PLATO CAMPUS IS

Action-Central

Wingspan’s main headquarters is the hub of ongoing activities. Staff gather in the Learning Lab twice a month for team meetings and for In Service Days – including Culture Share Day and Quiz Show Day. Two very personalized memorial services were held for clients who passed away. In February we had a birthday party, complete with “Elvis” (local performer Eddie Hughes and his band) to celebrate the 106th birthday of Betty from Skillman House. We had other birthday parties during the year as well. The In Home program utilizes the Plato Learning Lab for “Ladies Day In” arts & crafts days as well. On many Monday nights, Glee Club is rehearsing. One Friday night per month, clients are invited to “Movie Night.” It’s a great night for building friendship and enjoying snacks. We have some very exciting new enrichment programs in the works for 2019!

Talent Galore In April, we also held our second annual Wingspan’s Got Talent Show. This year it was held at Salem Lutheran Church in St. Paul. There were many uniquely wonderful performances, including a dance routine to the Laverne and Shirley TV show theme song by the Plato Staff. We thank our honorary judge, Jessica, Amy, and Patti Bev Mooney, for assisting Therese Davis and Frank Merrill with very difficult decisions. All participants received an award. First place went to Patti from Wentworth House for her zumba routine. Amy from Glenpaul took second place with her solo of “The Old Rugged Cross,” and Jessica from our In-Home program took third place for singing “Let It Go” from Frozen.

Rainbow Support Group Now celebrating its 17th year, Wingspan’s peer support group for LGBTQ adults provides a safe, welcoming and respectful place for interactive discussion and community events.

Volunteering A FA M I LY A F FA IR

Madison (14), Mackenzie (12), Briana (9), along with their mother, Colleen Crandall, found the perfect volunteer opportunity as buddies to the ladies of 11th Avenue House in Richfield – Linda, Dana, Casey, and Andrea. Colleen said, “We were welcomed with open arms by clients and staff, and we felt an instant connection.” They typically visit on Sundays and enjoy interacting with the clients – Madison and Casey talking, laughing together, doing crafts. They have also helped with yard clean up and gardening. Thank you to the Crandall family for your time, energy, and love! Wingspan would like to thank all of our volunteers who help with events, landscaping projects, interior and exterior painting and more. Get in touch with us and we will find the right fit for you, your family, your group of friends, or your office team!

At left, Dana, Briana and Linda. Linda and Colleen, at right.

Thank You Human Rights Committee Volunteers As a regulatory obligation, the committee meets several times per year and the primary purpose is to review admissions, medications, incidents, and a variety of other important reports. We are grateful for the time, due diligence, dedication and advocacy of those who serve. We are grateful for the past volunteer efforts of Jim White. This year, volunteer Kathy Powers will continue to serve along with staff. 9

Love Blooms

IN WINGSPAN’S LEGACY GARDEN Since it’s installation in 2016, Wingspan’s memorial garden has provided a thoughtful place for remembrance and reflection. The tree in front of the atrium, aptly called a Service Berry tree, blooms in different colors throughout the year and our plants change seasonally. Over 130 bricks have been installed to-date in memory or in honor of someone special. This year, volunteer Lyle Eagle Hawk provided a bench and he built two new flower box planters. Guests wander the patio looking at the names and the plants and decor. Staff may take a break to sit on the bench – sometimes to enjoy lunch in nice weather. The cost is only $100 per brick. We welcome visitors, gardeners, and weed pullers! Contact 651.888.3112 for information or to donate toward mulch and plants.

Glee Club

SPREADS JOY THROUGH MUSIC Wingspan’s partnership with MacPhail Center for Music has been going strong since 2013, with several new members participating this past year. The group had an opportunity to present two concerts with guest artists. A “Joy To The World” holiday concert took place in December at Roseville Robert Robinson Lutheran Church with gospel virtuoso Robert Robinson and his band. In April, Glee Club performed a Country Western Variety Show at Antonello Hall at MacPhail in conjunction with local folk band, The Lowland Lakers. The show included popular country western hits, jokes, and an air guitar contest to “Sweet Home Alabama.” Three Glee Club members, Tim, Amy and Michelle performed a heartfelt rendition of “The Old Rugged Cross.” Our ASL “soloist” for the event was Jenny E. who helped with the performance of John Denver’s “Country Roads.” Glee Club is so much more than a singing group. Together, they support one another and have developed strong bonds of friendship.

Another Goal Surpassed Each year, Wingspan sends customer satisfaction surveys to obtain feedback from clients , guardians and family. Once again, our goal of receiving satisfaction ratings of 90% or better was exceeded.
