Living Our Best Life for 46 Years 2 01 8 - 2 0 1 9 A N N U A L R E P O R T

Dear Friends,

Looking back on Wingspan’s 46 years of providing service to people with disabilities, my primary feeling is gratitude. I am so grateful to have all these amazing people in my life and in our circle of friends here at Wingspan. The people we serve, our staff, our Board of Directors, volunteers and, of course, our generous donors all come together to make so many wonderful things possible. The people we serve at Wingspan are a continuous source of inspiration and happiness to all of us, enriching the lives of so many. I’m constantly in awe of what I’ve learned from them; they help us all to be better people. Wingspan leaders, Mark and Therese with Audrey

Everyday I’m grateful for so many committed program staff who see us through this ongoing and unprecedented staffing crisis, working hard, with joy, to continually offer opportunities for learning, growth and fellowship, and the many support staff that keep things moving along and running smoothly. We recently celebrated Maureen Merrill’s 45 years of service to Wingspan. That’s dedication! Every one of our Board of Directors and our Finance Committee shows a passion for the work we do here at Wingspan, and a deep appreciation for the people we serve and our staff. We appreciate our volunteers who keep our yards and gardens looking great and our homes freshly painted, helping us to be good neighbors and contributing time and energy that translates into savings for our organization. I’m so very grateful for all of our donors and supporters. Your generosity allows us to provide so many things; the quality of life extras that make life rewarding and interesting, like our Glee Club, trips to Camp, tickets to sporting events and the Fair and, of course, assisting us with the costly essentials like vehicles, accessible bathrooms and ramps. This past year the creativity of our board and staff combined resulted in our updated Mission Statement “Inspiring community and empowering people impacted by disabilities to live their best life.” I think it’s a great description of what we’re all working to accomplish here at Wingspan, whatever your role. Together we can do great things Therese Davis, Executive Director

Camp Harmony

The phone rings and Harmony House answers to fulfill a critical community need In 2017, Wingspan was approved by the Minnesota Department of Health and Human Services as a new provider for desperately needed additional Crisis Respite services. We purchased a home in August of 2017 and, after many special renovations, the first client arrived in February of 2018. We also call this house “Camp Harmony due to the intended short term nature of the respite. The house is licensed for up to four adults and, since opening, we have served 10 clients. Wingspan has a partnership with Metro Crisis Coordination Program (MCCP) who receives referrals from case managers, guardians, and family members. Clients who reside at Harmony may come from a long-term psychiatric hospitalization, may have lived at home with family, or may have experienced jail time or homelessness prior to moving in. Their circumstances are difficult and complex, yet our focus is on positive strategies to achieve successful outcomes for all. Harmony staff receive additional specialized orientation and site training that includes mental health certification, psychotropic medications, functional behavioral assessments, substance abuse, suicide intervention/prevention, co-occurring disorders, safety training and emergency protocols. Camille Willner is our Program Director, and the home also has contracted nursing hours per week, two on-site supervisors, plus direct care staff. Wingspan is proud of our staff and the specialized service we provide to enable a successful transition to a more stable and full life.

Meet Jane

Outgoing, Hardworking, Inclusive and Brave! Jane is BUSY! Jane became a resident of our 1250 Hoyt House in 2001 and has been on the go ever since! She enjoys karate, bowling, softball, going for walks in summer and doing yard work. In winter, no one has to compete with shoveling Jane from 1250 because she is a champion! She is a member of Wingspan’s Glee Club, and is a charter member of our new Spoken Word & Poetry Group. Jane listens to music and especially likes Hip Hop. She goes to our Magnolia Ball and other events, and enjoys time with her housemates. She is always up for trying new things – including rock climbing. She says “If you are afraid to try something, try it the first time and you might want to do it again.” What Super Power would Jane like most? Jane wishes she had the ability to fly and would love to be a Superman or a Spiderman! Jane goes to Mid West Special Services (MSS) and works hard. She takes up opportunities at St. Thomas University, where she works, to earn some income. Jane likes to participate in the activities organized at her day program, including their dance. She encourages her colleagues to get involved in activities. Her staff describe Jane as “a caring, helpful, person with a great sense of humor – someone who encourages others. She is very approachable and makes friends easily. She introduces herself to new people and follows up to keep the friendship.”

A Mother Daughter Bond The first thing Jane does after returning from her day program, an event or an activity is to call her mom, Marlene, and tell her about all the fun things she did. Jane and Marlene enjoy movies, theater, walks, going out to lunch, to the salon and to the mall. She likes to mow her mother’s yard and shovel her snow. Jane also goes to church with her mom most Sundays, and visits for sleepovers on holidays and special occasions.

“I have seen many positive changes in Jane since she moved into her Wingspan home. She has developed more self confidence and enjoys participating in every activity offered. She is eager to help in any way she can with her housemates and other individuals who may need some assistance. Wingspan has had a wonderful impact on her life.” – Marlene Hoppel

Exciting New Collaborations! Our ongoing success with Glee Club prompted us to explore two new initiatives this past Spring. We launched our first “Culture Club” – this time in collaboration with Alliance Francaise of Minneapolis/St. Paul – a chapter of the largest cultural organization in the world. We also partnered with teachingarts organization, Compas, for a Spoken Word & Poetry Club. As with Glee Club, client enthusiasm and achievements exceeded our expectations, and the experiences were nothing short of magical.

House Coordinator Lori Mason and Laura, Oakland House

During the nine-week French Club series, a rotation of wonderful instructors helped members learn about geography, colors, currency, the flag, other French speaking countries, culture, customs and holidays, French art and artists, music, and about French food. They learned French songs, sang beautifully, and danced along. They painted their own masterpieces, utilized French greetings during French market night, and took a cooking lesson from a French chef! Family and staff came for the “Evening in Paris” showcase night to review what members had learned. Everyone enjoyed authentic French food and custom crepes by “Oh, Crepe.”

During the 8-week pilot of “Rock the Mic” Spoken Word & Poetry Club facilitated by teaching artist

Desdamona from Compas, the group learned about many poetic devices including rhymes, alliteration, imagery, onomatopoeia, list poems and more. They created many beautiful and deeply personal pieces as individuals or as a group. House Coordinator Natt Jaleiba, one of the group’s founders, believes strongly in this platform for storytelling and self-expression. Betty with Alliance Francaise Music Teacher It was also used as a therapeutic modality for Francine Roche members struggling with issues pertaining to grief. Inspired by this group, Development Officer Darolyn Gray wrote a prayer song, “Healing Waters” as part of this project. Wentworth House poet Patty charmed Power of Love gala guests with performances of her original works. The first edition of a Wingspan poetry book was published in time for the May gala and was given to each guest, and extra copies are available. We’re grateful for the donor support that enables wonderful enrichment programs like these!

A Merger Meant to Be Our House of Minnesota

A very special organization, called Our House of Minnesota, sought us out in early 2018 to discuss the possibility of becoming part of our organization. Our House of Minnesota consists of two 6-person group homes in St. Paul, started by family members of people with disabilities. They had a legacy of excellent service and the organization was precious to many people so this decision, for them, was emotional and difficult.

Cheerful Joanne from Our House Portland

After meetings and discussions we all felt that our missions and philosophy of service to others was in sync and started on the road to bringing Our House into Wingspan. On January 1st, Our House of Minnesota officially became part of Wingspan. Two members of their Board have joined our Board, and we welcomed Bruce Smith and Taree Leach-Junkersfeld. We are enjoying getting to know the clients, staff, and families and have welcomed them to our Wingspan family with open arms. We hold dear their trust in allowing us to continue the legacy of Our House of Minnesota.

Meet Ed Ed has lived at Our House Dayton since May of 2003. He goes to work through his day program at Merrick. When he returns home from work, the first thing he does is make a healthy lunch for the next day. Ed is a wonderful conversationalist and enjoys many types of music, dancing, and photography.

Meet buddies John & Melvin from Our House Portland John and Melvin are wonderful housemates at Our House Portland and they have a special bond. Melvin was admitted to Our House John & Melvin at Our House Portland from a foster home in September of 2006. He had previously been in foster care living in less than desirable, very unclean living conditions. All of his belongings needed to be replaced. His foster mother passed away, and Melvin needed emergency placement. Program Director Crystal Jackson told us, “The timing was a blessing as Our House had two openings that had come up in the last month. It was meant to be.” As such, Melvin and his previous foster home housemate, Joe, were both able to move in.

John came to Our House Portland from Northeast Residence on September of 1989. His mother was one of the Founders of Our House of Minnesota Inc. and his sister, Taree, is one of Wingspan’s newest Board members. John’s loving family has remained involved since the very beginning. John attends day program at Midwest Special Services. Crystal tells us, “John is a jokester, always cutting up with staff, always trying to make someone laugh. He loves his Our House Portland sisters and lights up when he sees them. They tend to spoil him (as staff do) and he loves it.” Melvin has the soul of an artist and loves

making and wearing bead necklaces. After spending time in his day program at Merrick, Melvin enjoys sorting through his bead collection to create colorful new designs. Staff describe Melvin as a good helper. He walks around putting things back in place when others are messy. He even tries to parent some of his peers – gently scolds them when they are being too loud, but also tries to help and protect them. He is a free spirit and greets visitors with a welcoming “Hey!” and a big smile on his face as he pats them on the back. 8

Volunteering

A great opportunity for families, individuals, groups, and corporate teams! Volunteers are especially welcome at Wingspan and help with so many vital needs including yard work and painting. In June, the Tanning family spent an afternoon A big “thank you to the Tanning Family! at our 29th Avenue group home in St. Anthony to help with interior painting that included the kitchen, living room and dining room. Afterward, they stayed to celebrate the birthday of their loved one, Charlie, who has been a resident since 2014. Also in June, Chuck, Becky and Joe Human helped with several hours of yard work at our 17th Avenue House where their brother, Tommy, has resided since 2017. In May, former Board Member Rudy Hokanson and a team of Yale Alumni Association of the Northwest and their family members spent many hours helping with yard work at our very large backyard at Troseth House in Roseville. What a tremendous job they did! To learn more about volunteer opportunities all over the greater Twin Cities, contact sseverson@wingspanlife.org or call Sid at 651.888.3116. She will find the perfect fit. We appreciate all of our volunteers and welcome individuals, families, corporate teams, school and church groups for Day of Service projects.

Thank You Human Rights Committee Volunteers As a regulatory obligation, the committee meets several times per year and the primary purpose is to review admissions, medications, incidents, and a variety of other important reports. We are grateful for the time, due diligence, dedication and advocacy of those who serve. We are grateful for our past volunteers. This year, volunteers Kathy Powers and Sarah White served along with our staff. 9

Love Blooms

in Wingspan’s Legacy Garden

Since it’s installation in 2016, Wingspan’s memorial garden has provided a thoughtful place for remembrance and reflection. The tree in front of the atrium, aptly called a Service Berry tree, blooms in different colors throughout the year and our plants change seasonally. Over 140 bricks have been installed to-date in memory or in honor of someone special. Guests wander the patio looking at the names and the plants and décor and Staff may take a break to sit on the bench. The cost is only $100 per brick. We welcome visitors, gardeners, and weed pullers! Contact 651.888.3112 for information or to donate toward mulch and plants.
