FEBRUARY FOCUS: SELF EXPRESSION THROUGH ART WHAT IS PBIS? - POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an approach to supporting students to be successful in school. PBIS supports all students through intervention with a multi-tiered system ranging from a school-wide system (Tier 1) to a system for developing individualized plans for specific students (Tier 2-3). The school utilizing an on-line rewards system i.e. PBIS Rewards to award “Soar Bucks” i.e. points to students and staff for positively demonstrating the areas of the program as noted below. These accumulated points may be used to make purchases at the SOAR store and to meet eligibility requirements for specific events as applicable during the 2023-2024 school year.

FEBRUARY FOCUS: SELF EXPRESSION THROUGH ART
The arts can promote social-emotional learning (SEL) in students in various ways, including: 1. Self-expression: The arts provide students with a medium to express their emotions and thoughts, helping them develop a sense of self-awareness and self-esteem. 2. Empathy: Engaging in the arts can help students understand and appreciate different perspectives and experiences, promoting compassion and understanding of others. 3. Communication: The arts can help students develop practical communication skills, both verbally and non-verbally, by learning how to express themselves and interpret the expressions of others. 4. Collaboration: Many art forms, such as theater and music, require students to collaborate to create something, helping students learn the value of teamwork and cooperation. 5. Conflict resolution: The arts often require students to solve problems and resolve conflicts creatively and collaboratively, which can help them develop strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills. 6. Self-regulation: Engaging in the arts can help students learn to regulate their emotions, behavior, and attention, which can help them in their academic and personal lives. 7. Cultural understanding: The arts often draw upon different cultural traditions, which can help students learn about and appreciate different cultures, fostering mutual understanding and respect. 8. Self-reflection: The arts provide ample opportunities for students to reflect on their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, leading to a deeper understanding of themselves and others.
