TORCH Nominations are opening soon! Don’t miss the opportunity to nominate a teacher for Teachers of Ohio Representing Character and Heart (TORCH) recognition coming soon. The TORCH program honors five teachers from around the state each year who model strong personal character and concern for their students, colleagues, and communities. Anyone may nominate a teacher for this honor, so please share with schools and communities. The 2023 Ohio Teacher of the Year and finalists, along with the 2024 Ohio Teacher of the Year and 2022 National Teacher of the Year, will review nominations and select this year’s TORCH honorees. The nomination link will be available on the TORCH webpage.

JANUARY FOCUS: NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS WHAT IS PBIS? - POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an approach to supporting students to be successful in school. PBIS supports all students through intervention with a multi-tiered system ranging from a school-wide system (Tier 1) to a system for developing individualized plans for specific students (Tier 2-3). The school utilizing an on-line rewards system i.e. PBIS Rewards to award “Soar Bucks” i.e. points to students and staff for positively demonstrating the areas of the program as noted below. These accumulated points may be used to make purchases at the SOAR store and to meet eligibility requirements for specific events as applicable during the 2023-2024 school year.

STEPS FOR GOALS TO SUCCESS Step 1 - Identify goals for classroom behavior academic success and personal growth Step 2 - Identify school, family and community resources, with adult support, that may assist in achieving a goal Step 3 - Describe what action steps can be taken to reach a short-term goal. Plan steps needed to reach a short-term goal. Step 4 - Discuss obstacles that can get in the way of reaching a goal and ideas for handling those obstacles.
