OCEAN HOLIDAYS GROUP CELEBRATES 20 YEARS Winged Boots’ parent brand Ocean Holidays celebrated its 20-year anniversary in 2023 with a party at the U.S. Embassy and an eye-catching rebrand. Alongside a new colour palette and bold logo, at the heart of the brand refresh is our shared mission ‘to make holidays the best they can be, every step of the way’ highlighting the group’s ethos. THE UAE AIMS TO BE NET ZERO BY 2050 Dubai has long been associated with construction and extravagance, however that is about to change with the emirate’s new wave of sustainability-led projects to help the UAE achieve its goal of producing net zero emissions by 2050. The Museum Of The Future is one of the lowest impact buildings in the world and showcases forward-thinking exhibitions spanning space travel and living; climate change; ecology; health; wellness and spirituality. Each exhibit places a huge emphasis on how we can take these learnings and apply them to the world we live in today, to have a better tomorrow. Alongside this, the world’s largest ocean restoration project Dubai Reefs is underway alongside The Loop, a 58-mile covered cycling highway aiming to reduce the city’s reliance on cars.

DID YOU KNOW? DORCHESTER COLLECTION The celeb-studded city of Beverly Hills was built around the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel. It’s where the city began and took its name. Christian Dior opened his first boutique opposite Hôtel Plaza Athénée to attract the hotel’s esteemed guests. He would dress models in his couture and send them into the hotel lobby and bar to attract new shoppers. His plan clearly worked, as the original boutique now spans a whopping 10 shops! Le Meurice in Paris has always been popular with royalty and artists. Salvador Dali stayed for at least one month per year, for 30 years, and once requested a herd of sheep be brought to his room.

FIVE TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELLING WITH YOUR BABY INVEST IN A LIGHTWEIGHT CABIN-APPROVED STROLLER This way you don’t have to carry your baby around the airport, while in the security line or when waiting for your baggage.

LAS VEGAS JUST GOT A LITTLE BRIGHTER Making its debut in September 2023, The Sphere at The Venetian Resort is the world’s most impressive music and entertainment area. The largest LED screen on Earth, the ginormous 80,000 square foot projection can be seen from space and somehow lights up the already neon studded Las Vegas strip. Inside, the globe seats 18,000 with vibrating seats to fully immerse spectators in the show. Connected to The Venetian Resort via a covered walkway The Sphere is a new landmark that’ll play a pivotal role in entertaining the 40,000 annual visitors to Sin City.

BRING PLENTY OF SNACKS The routine goes out of the window when you’re travelling. Keep baby happy with melty puffs, pouches, fruit and milk. BOARD THE PLANE SEPARATELY One parent should make use of priority and secure the stroller and bags in the overhead locker, while the other waits until the final moment to board the plane. This limits baby’s time spent on your lap in a small seat. DON’T FORGET SUCTION TOYS If your child is under two and sitting on your lap, suction spinners and window stickers will help keep them entertained without taking up too much space in your hand luggage.

HAVEN HOUSE

CHILDREN'S HOSPICE ABOUT HAVEN HOUSE Haven House Children’s Hospice cares for seriously ill babies and children across North-East London, West Essex and Hertfordshire. The team provides round-the-clock care in families' homes as well as within their hospice in Woodford Green. The charity offers day care, overnight stays, end of life care and bereavement support as well as life enriching activities such as sensory play, music therapy and physiotherapy. In 2022 and 2023, they delivered 25,180 hours of care. 18

SUPPORTING 400+ FAMILIES “Being told that your child is seriously ill is devastating,” says Paola Noto, a representative for Haven House Children’s Hospice. “Our support is as unique as every family. We are here from the time a diagnosis is made to enhance quality of life and to provide 24/7 support at the times when it is needed most. We enable those we support to enjoy life as children, rather than as patients, and as families, not just as carers. Together, we help families create happy memories and make the most of every moment.”

£87,000 RAISED Ocean Holidays has raised more than £87,000 through a series of staff and customer events. WINGED BOOTS' SHOOT DAY Across three annual events, we have raised more than £28,000 in association with Maddox Gallery. RUDY'S RAMBLE The annual family walk in honour of Rudy Hastings has raised more than £15,000. STAFF SKYDIVING In 2022, six brave Ocean staff members jumped out of a plane and collectively raised £2,348.

RUDY'S STORY

Haven House has a special place in Ocean Holidays' heart as our Co-CEO Harry Hastings' son Rudy uses the centre. At just 11 weeks old he was diagnosed with Epilepsy and hypotonia. Now three and a half years old, Rudy struggles to hold his head up, sit up and roll. It's unclear at what age he might stand or walk; if at all. All known sufferers of MCAHS-1 are also non-speaking.

CORPORATE SPONSORS SINCE 2017 The hospice needs £5 million per year to run, which is why Winged Boots and our parent company Ocean Holidays are a proud and active corporate sponsor. Only 26% of the charity’s costs are government funded, meaning Haven House really relies on corporate sponsors and community fundraising initiatives to keep going. From office bake sales and sponsored skydives to a 24-hour cycling challenge and online raffle, we have organised many fundraising events to support Haven House. Winged Boots has attended the annual Haven House Charity Gala with customers for the past two years and has raised valuable funds at its annual clay pigeon shooting day.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT? £50 could pay for an hour of specialist play therapy while £500 funds an entire day of music therapy. It costs £1,000 per day to have two specialist nurses provide end of life care and emotional support within a child’s home while a 24-hour in-house stay for a baby or child with intense medical needs costs £3,250. And £5,000 could fund a hoist within the hospice. Aside from donating money, there are a range of events which you can attend, where 100% of the proceeds fund the charity. Or, you could take part in a sponsored activity, organise a bake sale, or simply donate your unused belongings to one of the hospice’s charity shops to help support their incredible service.

Mum Nicola says: “Our goal is to enrich Rudy’s life and enable him to achieve his maximum potential. It’s hard to know what life is going to be like for Rudy, but having no real benchmarks to compare him to means the sky is the limit with what he could achieve. "To us Haven House is exactly that: a haven. It is somewhere we can take Rudy for respite and know that he will be safe, happy, and expertly cared for. “At Haven House, Rudy is in the safest hands, with more one to one care and better access to play than we could ever give him at home." TRAVEL COMMENTARY WITH

JOE COLE In an exclusive interview, former West Ham and Chelsea midfielder talks travel, career highlights and why he books his holidays with Winged Boots

NAME YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS? Making my debut at West Ham was a massive moment for me. And then probably winning the Premier League for the first time with Chelsea. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER? Once I got bitten by the football bug as a kid, everything I did was to try and make it. Football was always a place of fun and enjoyment for me. The beautiful thing was that my dad wasn't a football person and so there were never any expectations at home. It was just love and support to chase my dreams and that was it. I never had anyone pushing me; instead it all came from within. 20

CAN YOU PINPOINT A SPECIFIC MOMENT WHERE YOU REALISED YOU COULD GO PRO? I think belief is important for anybody who's trying to achieve something. And to be honest, there was never a point where I thought I couldn’t make it. I don't know whether that was just ignorance, but I genuinely thought this is going to happen. I believed it, and that was my journey. ARE THERE ANY MOMENTS ON THE PITCH THAT YOU STILL RELIVE? That’s the curse. Nothing can be as good as being a footballer without having some downsides. It can be such a high when you've scored a goal or are lifting a trophy, but often

it's the ones that got away that can wake you up at night. Like losing the Champion's League final on penalties. Literally a centimetre the other way and we would have won. But that's just a small price to pay and I have great memories of scoring in the World Cup for England, winning the FA Cup and Premier League title. HOW DID IT FEEL PLAYING FOR YOUR COUNTRY? Playing for England was a great honour. It meant more to me because I wanted to be a footballer after watching the 1990 World Cup with Paul Gascoigne. When I pulled on the Three Lions shirt for the first time, it was just surreal.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I love playing padel tennis at the moment. That's something that's real fun for me. I play a little bit of golf when I can, but I live in central London now, so I go out on my bike a lot. My wife Carly calls it playing out. AND WHAT ABOUT TRAVEL? WHERE WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AS THE BEST PLACE YOU'VE VISITED? I love travelling. I've been around the world with football, but you don't get to see much. However, I’m making up for that now with punditing. For instance, I went down to comment on an England game recently and I visited Naples – that was like stepping

back in time. I also stayed in Doha for the World Cup last year and that was an extraordinary place: it reminded me of Dubai 20 years ago. When travelling with my family and three kids, the main thing is that they're occupied. For winter sun I do like Dubai and the Maldives. And I also love Puglia. But I must admit, holidays are mainly for the kids while they're young. So wherever I go, it has to be somewhere where they're entertained. DO YOU HAVE ANY HAND LUGGAGE ESSENTIALS? I'm a light traveller. I like reading, so one of my favourite things when I get to the airport is to find a good book. That is an essential for me.

HOW DO YOU STAY OCCUPIED ON A FLIGHT? If the kids are quiet, I like to listen to a podcast. I enjoy listening to Joe Rogan as he gets some good guests, or a boxing podcast. But believe it or not, I don't listen to any football podcasts when I'm on holiday. WHERE'S YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY TO? I'm going to Lapland with the kids. We did it for the two eldest about five years ago, and they loved it. So I can’t not do it for the little fella. He's at the age where he's just starting to think, 'hold on a minute, this is a bit fishy.’ So I guess I’m just trying to keep that magic alive, certainly for this Christmas and maybe next year too. 21

JOE'S TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS Having lived in France and Florida during his esteemed football career, Joe shares his thoughts on where's best to visit, and when. FLORIDA

"There's a spot in Tampa called Bern's Steak House, and I think it's one of the best steak houses ever. Plus, it's got one of the largest private wine collections in America. There's also a beautiful little place where I used to live called St. Petersburg, which has got a stunning beach and a lovely port. There are lots of bars and restaurants with live music too." FRANCE

"I love France. The level of food quality is so much better than what we serve in England. Lille is a beautiful city for a short break, especially if you like festive markets. It’s reachable by train from St. Pancras, and they really do pull out all the stops at Christmas. It’s on the border of Belgium so that culture seeps into the city too, and you can enjoy delicious chocolate and Belgian beer."

IS THERE ANYWHERE ON YOUR TRAVEL BUCKET LIST? So many places. When the kids have grown up, I'd like to get a campervan and travel around the world with Carly. I’d start off in Europe, and I'd also like to travel across South America. But where I really want to visit is Egypt. I’d love to see the pyramids – I’m a bit of a geek with things like that.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE HOTEL? I do like the Four Seasons in Dubai. It's got everything I need. There’s a private beach. It's got lovely restaurants and the food's good. Plus the staff are really nice. And then there’s a small family-run place called Carbis Bay Hotel in Cornwall. We went down there a few years ago and the villas on the beach are just stunning.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE CITY? In the last four years I've probably seen more of Europe with punditry than I did when playing. I interviewed my old manager, José Mourinho, in Rome eight months back and I spent the night in Italy's capital. I visited the Vatican and it blew me away. I thought ‘I've played in this city three or four times in my career and I didn't know anything about its landmarks’. I was amazed by it all.

WHY DO YOU BOOK YOUR HOLIDAYS WITH WINGED BOOTS? We book our travel with Winged Boots because everyone is really kind. They are always available on the phone and put up with us changing our mind 500 times. Speaking to Winged Boots is like ringing your mate up and trying to book a holiday. The team always get the right thing. Our holidays are really tailored, which is just what we need, and always organised with a smile.

We hope you like your city stays shiny and new, as we’re showcasing some of 2024’s hottest openings on page 24. From Thailand’s capital to Rome, there’s a top luxury resort opening soon that we bet you can’t wait to try out. That’s followed by our catwalk collection of fashion branded hotels, spas and more on page 27. Think Gucci sunshine yellow umbrellas, serene Dior spas and impressive resorts emblazoned with Versace’s signature prints and scent. You heard it here first, we’re tipping Japan to be one of the most visited countries for 2024 which is why we’ve compiled the ultimate guide to six of its cosmopolitan cities on page 30. And the section is rounded off with our spotlight shining brightly on the live music capital of the world: Austin in Texas. Don your cowboy boots for some rhythmic toe-tapping.

THE CAPSULE COLLECTION Make sure you’re runway ready – and no, we don’t mean the airplane tarmac – as these haute holidays blend top fashion houses with luxury hotels, trendy beach clubs and delicious restaurants

HAUTE HOTELS Fashion houses have spread their signature prints and à la mode sense of style into hospitality, with Versace leading the way in 2000 opening the world’s first fashion-branded hotel on Australia’s Gold Coast. Dubai has the largest collection of fashion hotels. The exclusive Armani Hotel has a prime location within the jewel of the emirate’s skyline, the Burj Khalifa. Expect unobstructed views, and a sleek colour palette reflective of the brand’s aesthetic. Contrary to this, Palazzo Versace – which gazes over Dubai marina – is awash with colour. Pretty pastels are complemented with rich reds and punchy purples, while the corridors are lined with sketches from the designers’ catwalk collections. And finally, Jumeira Bay Island hosts Bulgari Resort where private residences, a yacht club and seven delicious dining destinations harmoniously combine to create something truly special. New for 2023, shoe designer Christian Louboutin has opened a boutique guesthouse in Portugal’s countryside. Vermelho is irresistibly chic, with traditional Portuguese hand-painted tiles accompanied by ornate ceilings, and endless rolling hillside views. A stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, Fendi Private Suites are arguably Rome’s classiest choice. Just seven elegant private suites make up the maison which stands proud above the brand’s flagship boutique. London is also awash with fashionable stays. Live the suite life at Browns Hotel in the Sir Paul Smith suite; sleep in the Grand Piano Suite within Claridges which was designed by Diane von Furstenberg; or stay at The Savoy in the hotel’s recently renovated The Royal Suite by Gucci. The house’s founder, Guccio Gucci, once worked at The Savoy as a luggage porter and lift boy! Similarly, Dior has a wealth of suites under its belt including The St. Regis New York and Hotel Barrière Le Majestic in Cannes. And closing our roundup of haute hotels is The Karl Largerfeld Macau. Taking centre stage is the resort's restaurant Mesa by José Avillez which combines contemporary Portuguese cuisine with a visionary interior.

LIMITED EDITION

BOUTIQUE BEACH CLUBS 2023 was bursting with couture beach club collaborations. Fendi took over Puente Romano in Marbella with a nod to the 90s. Red striped cushions, monogrammed towels and specially built beach huts made up the poolside décor, while a beach boutique, branded surfboard and golf cart decked in Fendi stripes added plenty of photo opportunities to flirt with guests’ inner influencer. St. Tropez has long been synonymous with the fashion crowd, and in 2023 it was a beach club mecca for designer brands. Bagatelle joined forces with Giorgio Armani, Dior took over Shellona Beach and Indie Beach was redesigned with Jacquemus branding. Gucci emblazoned Loulou Beach Club in Ramatuelle, reimagining the 1950s with its signature stripe and yellow umbrellas. And finally, Valentino's bold red touched every inch of Palazzo Avino in Ravello. From yoga mats to deckchairs, no surface escaped the brand’s V logo.

COUTURE CUISINE AND AVANT-GARDE SPAS Fashions seduction of hospitality doesn’t stop at resorts, suites and seasonal beach clubs. It’s tantalising the taste buds too with a range of restaurants and cafes. Le Café V, the very first food outlet for Louis Vuitton, is open in Osaka Japan. Within the café, which sits atop the Louis Vuitton Maison store, there’s a hidden entrance to decorated chef Suga’s Sugalabo V restaurant: an exclusive experience which features a select number of guests for dinner only. The brand’s second concept café opened in summer 2023 on Sicily’s coast within Belmond’s Grand Hotel Timeo. However, the most iconic fashionable restaurant is located on Miami’s South Beach within Gianni Versace’s former home. This one-of-a-kind historic setting offers indoor and outdoor seating. Choose between the classic dining room or under the stars next to the designer’s personal pool. And what about the world of wellness? Of course, no hot stone has been left unturned with catwalk regular Dior. Spanning both hotels and luxury trains – yes the Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train now has a Dior spa onboard – a menu of relaxing beauty rituals has been created by the French brand. Cheval Blanc Paris and Hôtel Plaza Athénée’s wellbeing facilities are helmed by House of Dior. The designer's signature prints and fragrances create a calming atmosphere and feast for all five senses.

What will 2024 bring? We cannot wait to find out…

David Ox: "I dined at La Cabane during its collaboration with Dolce and Gabbana. The food was unreal. I had truffle risotto for main, then was taken to a secret dessert room where D&G accessories were turned into sweet treats. I enjoyed a chocolate handbag cake with a pistachio filling."

Lauren Godfrey: "If you're a budding fashionista you have to try the Prêt-á-Portea at The Berkeley in Knightsbridge. The menu changes with the seasonal catwalk, where the latest trends are immortilised in cakes and biscuits. From Dior to Versace, fashion has never tasted so good!"

Soak up the atmosphere and eclectic flavours of the Med at Patiki Beach and for a dinner to remember, head to Kingfisher for the fresh catch of the day and stellar service to complement the unparalleled views. MEET THE EXPERTS Lottie Underwood Meros Lottie has eight years' experience managing luxury portfolios and clients on land and sea. She represents Meros yacht sharing in the UK and Europe, alongside the brand’s esteemed partnership with Sunseeker.

How much should I tip and what’s the typical APA? Charlie says: “Tipping and the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) are important considerations when chartering a yacht. Tipping the crew is a customary practice with industry standard 10% - 15% of the charter fee. “The APA is a separate budget allocated to cover expenses during your charter, such as fuel, food, beverages, berthing fees, and any other extras. The APA is calculated as a percentage of the total charter fee, which is typically 35%, but can be higher for those with a more ambitious itinerary. “The APA is paid prior to the charter and held by the captain to cover expenses related to your trip. Any unused APA fund will be returned to you at the end of your holiday and if you exceed the APA amount, then you will be asked to make an additional payment. While on board, the crew will provide regular updates on the APA expenditures to keep you informed.”

Charlie Nicholson Sunseeker Charters Since 2018, Charlie has secured over 600 charter bookings. A qualified sailing instructor and power boat skipper, she has lived in five countries and this experience has set her in good stead for the travel and luxury yacht industry. David Ox Winged Boots David founded personal travel management company Winged Boots in 2008 from his black book of clients and industry contacts. He loves to travel and has enjoyed many yacht trips with his family and friends.

I'm a beginner to yacht holidays. Where do you recommend I start? Lottie says: "I often suggest starting with a yacht charter in the Med. The calm, protected waters are easily explored making it an ideal place to ease into the world of yacht holidays." Are yacht holidays suitable for a young family? Lottie says: "Absolutely! A yacht holiday will create lasting family memories. Fully supported by an experienced crew, there's something for all. Whether that's exploring on the sea bobs, learning to paddleboard or simply embracing the lull of the ocean from a giant inflatable flamingo. The calm Mediterranean waters are generally safe for children. With minimal tides and many bays, it becomes a playground for the whole family to enjoy."

36

How do I plan a yacht itinerary? David says: “Speak to one of our personal travel managers and tell us your requests. We’ll get to know you and suggest some ideas for routes and places to visit. Once we know how many people are travelling, your planned holiday duration and location then we will put together a bespoke itinerary with one of our specialist yacht partners. We’ll present everything to you, and then handle every tiny detail; from your flights and transfers, through to restaurant and beach club reservations. All you need to do is pack your suitcase.” Can I charter a yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix? Charlie says: "Watching the race from the deck of a yacht is one of the best vantage points. The Monaco Grand Prix is a highly sought-after event, and yacht charters for this occasion can get booked well in advance so careful planning ahead of time is essential. Also consider the location as this is crucial for viewing the race. You'll want a berth in a prime spot in the harbour, as close to the track as possible which Sunseeker can arrange. And finally, think about your duration. Some charters are for the race weekend only, while others may include additional time for cruising along the French Riviera, which I highly advise." What are the main benefits of chartering a superyacht? Charlie says: "Chartering allows you to enjoy all the benefits of owning a superyacht, without the running costs. You have exclusive use of the vessel and a professional crew to cater to your every need. Many charters offer gourmet dining experiences prepared by talented chefs as well as a variety of water toys such as paddleboards and jet skis, meaning you can engage in watersports at your leisure. It's a personalised vacation on the water." 37

INSIDE

THE POSTCARD Comprising 10 provinces and three territories, Canada’s cultural makeup is as vast as its geography. Vibrant cities are cradled by soaring peaks, bordered by the ocean or edged by seemingly endless lakes. The wildlife is unmatched, the landscape simply knockout and the holiday possibilities truly endless

38

You can pack a thousand adventures into one trip. Canada stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west, while northward blurs into the Arctic Ocean. With this comes a landscape poetry where each verse beguiles the senses, and every couplet steals your heart. Weaving between glacier lakes and magnificent mountains are wide open roads, making traversing this impressive country ideal by car. Popular road trip routes include the Crowsnest Highway which spans from British Columbia to Alberta, passing through verdant valleys and charming towns. Or, to discover the Canadian Rockies, follow Icefields Parkway; your front row seat to some of the range’s most fetching glaciers, thick pine forests and turquoise lakes. Linking the hamlet of Lake Louise in Banff National Park with the mountain town of Jasper – and passing mirror-like Herbert Lake, the sweeping Athabasca Glacier and double-barrelled Sunwapta Falls – this iconic route serves many of the most rewarding travel experiences in the Rockies. If you’d prefer your tour intertwines cosmopolitan cities, hugs the St. Lawrence River, criss-crosses through countryside and cuts through mountains: say bonjour to Quebec. Visit Montreal and Quebec City, watch for whales and discover the many facets to this province. Where French flair combines with Canada’s creativity, the cuisine is a foodies dream. Poutine, chips topped with thick beef gravy and cheese curds, is the unofficial national dish.

Alternatively, allow the train to take the strain by riding the iconic Rocky Mountaineer through British Columbia. Onboard the glass-domed carriage, you’ll sample elegantly plated meals while Canada’s impressive scenery unfolds in front of you. And if you want to get closer to the vistas, the outdoor viewing platform allows the panoramas to overcome you, literally, while the wind rushes through your hair. Wildlife is another huge draw; second only to the collection of majestic national parks, and thankfully in many cases the two marry together to aid your quest to see as much as possible. Moose, seals, whales and eagles are all on Canada’s watch list, and it’s common to spot a brown or black bear with the country home to around 60% of the world’s population. On the rarer side, and heartbreakingly marked as endangered, you can trace the pawprints of polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba. Set off on an Arctic crawler over the tundra and watch these majestic creatures feed their young, hunt and play in the snow. The sportier traveller may prefer freshwater fishing in the picturesque Saskatchewan province. With 100,000 lakes, you’re spoilt for choice with where to cast. Experienced fishing outfitters can help guide you to net trophy northern pike, lake trout and Arctic grayling in settings of intense natural beauty. Peak season for fly fishing begins in April and goes through to November, where the rivers run wild with five salmon species and steelhead come summer.

39

In Canada’s north lies its three territories. The Northwest Territories is the least visited of the three, but that doesn’t mean it is any less beautiful. Five times the size of the United Kingdom, it’s vast! And with so much open space it presents a storybook setting of pristine wilderness. Many visitors gravitate towards Nahanni National Park Reserve: home to the striking Virginia Falls and Great Slave Lake, the deepest lake in North America. However, its two neighbours which proudly sandwich The Northwest Territories, encapsulate the spirit of the Arctic. Untethered from the rest of the world, Nunavut is a place where modern people live modern lives in an ancient environment; however, the indigenous Inuit people’s culture remains beautifully untouched. One of the world’s most remote locations, it’s accessible by air travel from most of the country’s major cities (think Ottawa, Montréal, Winnipeg, Churchill, Edmonton and Calgary) as well as next door’s capital Yellowknife. Nunavut occupies one fifth of Canada’s entire landmass, and yet there are no roads. Travelling between its communities is usually done by aircraft, cruise ship, and in some cases, snowmobile, dogsled expeditions or powerboat. You can even take to the icy waters and explore the rocky shoreline and fjords via kayak. Touch an iceberg, view walrus and perfect your aperture and depth of field: the scenes certainly lend themselves to being photographed. Or, from the

safety of land or atop a larger vessel, view narwhales, beluga whales and polar bears on a guided tour. Chase the northern lights and midnight sun in the final territory Yukon. However, many are looking for another glint of light: any remaining nuggets of precious metal not unearthed from the gold rush in 1896. Alongside its gold appeal, Yukon still retains its allure thanks to its authentic frontier towns, empty highways that skirt lakes and its acres of unspoiled wilderness. Whistler is magnetic in every season but some would argue it’s most impressive when blanketed in snow. Famed for its winter sports, Whistler Blackcomb is widely regarded as one of the best ski resorts in the world and boasts a whopping 200 marked runs across the two adjacent mountains. However, once the snow melts, this mountain playground lets loose. Green peaks are carpeted in alpine wildflowers, snowboards swapped for bicycles, and the dizzying heights of black runs replaced with ziplining. In short, Canada is a melting pot of culture and cuisine. Its formation of national parks and jagged peaks with astounding natural beauty will hypnotise you. But it’s the country’s soul of warm hospitality from its friendly locals that truly makes it one of the best destinations to experience our wonderful planet.

CAESARS PALACE, LAS VEGAS Rain Man

MALTA Malta has had a facelift in recent years, but its rugged charm and traditional heart remains. ATHENS, GREECE Greece was the first holiday abroad for many young brits in the 1980s with interrailing becoming popular. Athens quickly became one of the most-visited destinations via rail and although your mode of transport may differ now, the capital has once more been thrust into the limelight of the luxury traveller. Why? Thanks to its horde of exceptional hotels. For 2024,

One&Only Aesthesis opens its doors on a sun-soaked stretch of Glyfada. Combining nostalgic glamour with private villas, residences and beach bungalows, it’s Greece but elevated to a new level of contemporary luxury. MONTSERRAT, CARIBBEAN After music producer Sir George Martin - who some referred to as the fifth Beatle - opened a recording studio on this tiny Caribbean island, 80s music legends would retreat to the sun to record and relax. Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Boy George, Duran Duran, Stevie Wonder and so many more all travelled and recorded here. After a volcano eruption in the 1990s the island has never been the same, however its neighbour Antigua is an excellent family holiday choice. Located on a private isle just 10-minutes from Antigua’s coast is Jumby Bay Island Resort, an all-inclusive family retreat. Expect white sand lapped by azure waves. 47

Elevate your children’s schooling by swapping books for a first-hand experience of different cultures, histories, arts, ecological initiatives, and technological advances through the world of travel. Simply pick a subject, and allow us to craft your timetable…

PSHE The world has lessons that your children will never learn in a Personal, Social, Health and Economic classroom. A good place to start is Africa. Enjoy a safari in Serengeti National Park or Maasai Mara National Reserve, witnessing the big five and even the big migration if timed well, before trekking with the local hunter-gatherer tribe. In Northern Tanzania, the Hadzabe people allow a rare glimpse into their nomadic way of living. Similarly, you can visit a local Masaai village where you'll receive the precious opportunity to take part in their traditions, witness ancient ceremonies and even go hunting for wild honey. Life-enriching experiences with locals are also popular in southeast Asia. Receive a blessing at Pura Tirta Empul in Bali, enjoy a traditional cookery class in Thailand or soak up the stunning scenery of Cat Cat Village in Vietnam while discovering the Black Hmong culture. 48

HISTORY Just a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, Rome is a great weekend adventure that’s brimming with history to excite young minds. The Colosseum is certainly a good starting point – be sure to book a tour with access to the Gladiator floor and underground – but don’t forget about the Roman Forum, Palantine Hill, Castel Sant’Angelo and The Pantheon. While in Italy’s capital, simply walking from landmark to gelateria will unlock a wealth of archaic sites, so ditch the public transport and put your trainers on to truly immerse your family in history. For life pre the Roman Empire, fly an additional hour (from London) to Athens to discover Ancient Greece. Explore riveting ruins and centuries-old temples while learning about art and history, delve into the birthplace of democracy and discover more on Greek mythology.

GEOGRAPHY What better way to learn about our planet than by discovering it first hand? Teach your little explorers about biospheres in Costa Rica, where active volcanoes, palm fringed beaches and tropical rainforests live in harmony with wildlife and flourishing fauna. Explore the misty heights of Monteverde Cloud Forest or observe nesting sea turtles in Tortuguero National Park, all while discovering the country’s unique ecosystems. For older children and teens, New Zealand is an entire Geography curriculum. Its landscape is vast, encompassing a diverse range of landforms such as fjords, glaciers, mountains and volcanoes. Located on The Pacific Ring of Fire, volcanoes can be viewed on geologist-led tours amongst hot springs, bubbling mud pools, geysers and waterfalls. Meanwhile underground in Waitomo, a population of cave glowworms offer a bioluminescent experience via boat. MUSIC Discover America’s musical backbones with a trip to the 'deep south'. Visit The Grand Ole Opry and The Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville or head to New Orleans, the home of jazz, where the soundtrack to your holiday will be a saxophone, trumpet or trombone. However, to discover the birthplace of blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis is your stop. Explore where Elvis Presley recorded his first few singles with a tour of Sun Studio before visiting Graceland, located 20-minutes outside of downtown. Beale Street is brimming with live music bars, however, note there is an 8pm curfew for those under 21. If classical is more your speed, we recommend a visit to Vienna. A city synonymous with Mozart and Beethoven, there are plenty of opera houses and live music venues within the city that are perfect for budding composers. Discover the live music capital of the world on page 32 ART London is brimming with galleries to teach children of all ages about the fascinating world of art. However, to understand Catalan Modernism, fly to Barcelona to discover Gaudi’s best architecture. Be sure to visit all three casas as well as Park Güell and the soon to be completed Sagrada Familia. For iconic Renaissance paintings, stop by The Louvre in Paris, which is so much more than Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. The Last Supper, also by Da Vinci, is on display in Milan while Michelangelo’s Last Judgement and Creation of Adam are within the Sistine Chapel in Rome. To team your art history lesson within a family holiday, why not visit Louvre Abu Dhabi? Or, en route to Cancun, stop off at Mexico City to see Frida Kahlo’s former home which is now a museum dedicated to Surrealism. 49

THE

BIG BANG HOLIDAY Whether you want to kick start your retirement or are celebrating selling your business, these three trips are sure to help you mark a milestone

It’s easy to fall into the trap of visiting the same hotel or destination over and over. Time is one of life’s most precious commodities, especially when you’re working a nine to five or running a company, so when you’re on holiday you want to make sure every moment of your stay is perfect; and trying somewhere new may seem quite daunting. But more often than not, it’s worth the risk… especially if you’re celebrating a momentous life event. So, let’s turn that out of office on permanently and start your new chapter the right way: with a big bang holiday. 56

From flying further afield and taking the road less travelled to extending your typical week-long trip to a three or even a six-week getaway, these are all exciting ways to commemorate retirement. But where should you go? The world is your oyster, and with a Winged Boots’ personal travel manager by your side anything is possible. We will work with you to craft bespoke itineraries that are suited to your wants and needs, as well as inspire you with our own experiences. This is supported by our concierge Claire, who takes special requests and holiday surprises to new heights.

Seychelles is a great destination for a significant holiday. Be inspired by personal travel manager Louise Silverman's recent trip across six Seychelles' resorts plus a stopover in Ethiopia "I stayed at multiple five star resorts during my recent Seychelles holiday, combining barefoot luxury with adventurous activities and exceptional cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed eating palm heart, a local delicacy, as well as sweet octopus curry. "While in Mahé I slept at three different boutique resorts: L'Escale Resort Marina & Spa, Carana Beach Hotel and STORY Seychelles where the nearby reggae bar's menu of cocktails - using locally produced rum - certainly packed a punch. "After a short flight, I arrived in paradise. Denis Private Island is totally off the grid. There's no WiFi and no TVs, encouraging you to switch off and appreciate the setting. And my goodness is it a stunning environment to get lost in. There's also a farm where I met giant tortoises and baby goats. "Then it was back to Mahé where I boarded another flight to Hotel L'Archipel. Family run, this felt like a home away from home; albeit with a sandy beach and exceptional kayaking just steps from my suite. "Finally it was back to Mahé for a few nights at Constance Ephelia. This resort is incredible for families as well as adults with zipwires and climbing walls plus two beaches - one on either side of the island - to keep you entertained. Just remember to look up... the star-studded sky is truly magical. "To break up my return journey, I spent one night in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa. On my whistlestop city tour I visited a coffee factory, the local zoo and enjoyed Injera: a tasty 'rip and dip' meal."

ALASKAN ADVENTURES Magnificent mountains that pierce the skyline, national parks the size of nations and glaciers to make your heart skip a beat: This is America at its very best. No towering skyscrapers, no apartment blocks stacked together like sardines, and no crowds rushing you from coffee shop to subway station. Welcome to Alaska, a place where you can tick off a lot of firsts; like spotting majestic humpback whales and orcas breaching Kenai Fjords National Park. The park itself spans 600,000 acres and is home to brown and black bears, wolves and moose as well as a stunning scenery of impressive glaciers and coastal fjords. A top spot for spotting grizzlies is a day trip to Kodiak Island, or – to truly immerse yourself in nature – why not cast out and catch trophy salmon, halibut or trout in Ketchikan? But where to stay? Perched on a nunatak in the Don Sheldon amphitheatre of Denali's magnificent Ruth Glacier, just 10 miles from the summit, the exclusive Sheldon Chalet is an all-inclusive getaway that sleeps up to 10 guests. Accessible only by helicopter, included in your stay are adventurous expeditions, flightseeing tours and all food crafted by a world-class chef. Whether you visit in snow strewn winter or during the midnight sun, you’re sure to enjoy a life-changing experience like no other. 57

REFINEMENT ON THE RAILS Enjoy the beauty of travel with a slower pace across Peru. The Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, is South America’s first luxury train. It traverses through Peru’s natural wonders including peaceful Lake Titicaca and the famous floating islands of Uros. But of course with this trip, it’s the journey that’ll create lasting memories. So, snuggle up in the roomy cabins complete with seating area, private ensuite bathroom and plush double bed; sample exceptional Peruvian cuisine in the dining car; and take in the beautiful sights of the Andes as you glide from Cusco to Arequipa. Peru’s enchanting spirit and Belmond’s unmatched hospitality blend to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Choose between a one or two night route, and then explore its neighbour Brazil, your gateway to the Amazon. 58

SWISH SWISS A little closer to home, Switzerland’s a melting pot of culture and luxury. Whether you’re visiting for the snow covered ski resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt or enjoying an alpine road trip taking in the dramatic scenery from the winding Furka Pass like James Bond, there truly is something for all. Our top pick is to stay at The Chedi Andermatt. Surrounded by the charming village of Andermatt that’s speckled with traditional ski chalets, cascading waterfalls, clear mountain lakes and pristine golf courses: you’ll want for nothing at this resort. The sumptuous spa will have you floating on a cloud while refined flavours from five restaurants and bars will sate your stomach. Oh, and the rooms and suites are both stylish and homely, with every modern amenity you could dream of.

WHERE TO GO AND WHEN Though undoubtedly exciting, planning your wedding can also be stressful. But the prospect of a once-in-a-lifetime trip with your new life partner can provide the perfect antidote – and add to the anticipation of the big day. JANUARY - FEBRUARY ARGENTINA Say goodbye to winter gloom and start the year (and married life) with an action-packed adventure on the sun soaked shores of rugged Argentina. Offering a beguiling combination of beach, city, and wild natural beauty, you can explore Argentina's eclectic capital, Buenos Aires, lose yourselves in the splendours of Patagonia, or fall in love with Iguazu Falls. Alternatively, embark on a unique couples' wine tour in the Mendoza region, renowned for its world-class vineyards and wineries. Stay at high-end wine estates and enjoy private tastings led by local producers – with the stunning Andes acting as your backdrop as you raise a glass to your new life together. Cheers! MARCH - APRIL MALDIVES Dew-covered daffodils and the dawn chorus call for an early spring escape with your chosen mate – and an island-bound itinerary will have you singing with the joys of the season. The Maldives sets the bar for phenomenal honeymoons: just take one look at those gorgeous sugar sands and turquoise seas to appreciate why. Days are spent snorkelling, scuba diving, or simply soaking up the sun in newly-wedded bliss, while evenings bring private beach dinners and romantic waterside walks. The bohemian-luxe Finolhu offers all that and more (did someone say stargazing in a beach bubble?). This one-of-a-kind beach resort is all about strengthening connections to your surroundings and your other half in a sublime setting. 60

MAY - JUNE AMALFI COAST Get your early summer fix of stunning scenery and captivating culture on the elegant Amalfi Coast. Hire a car and drive this iconic stretch of coastline, feeling like the ultimate 'it' couple as you schmooze with southern Italy's most sophisticated set. Or, swap winding roads with sweeping sea views for the satiny water of the Mediterranean itself on a sailing trip. Admire the stunning coastline, visit secluded coves and beaches, and stop in for an afternoon in pastel-hued towns like Positano or Ravello. JULY - AUGUST BALI Things are hotting up and it's time for some sun, sand, and surf. Bali promises beautiful beaches, stellar snorkelling, and superior surfing – while the infinitely Instagrammable setting provides a picture-perfect start to married life. The island's vibrant culture, stunning sunsets, and gourmet dining options add to the allure, making Bali an unforgettable destination for a special honeymoon in sultry tropical climes. Try the Sandat Glamping Tents, a luxurious eco-retreat in the rainforests of unblemished Ubud, for an unconventional (and romantic) accommodation option.

Our Senior Marketing Executive Jadeene recently enjoyed a two-week honeymoon to South Africa and Mauritius. “We started with an overnight stay in Johannesburg before flying to Hoedspruit, the gateway to Kruger National Park. We stayed at Thornybush Game Lodge, where our private butler and lodge staff took five star service to new heights – it's safari heaven. "The Luxury Suites have a private terrace with views over a dried riverbed and any animals wallowing there, as well as a freestanding bath and an outdoor shower. Sunrise and sunset game drives meant that our expert rangers found the Big Five on the first day. Plus, thanks to our concierge Claire, the lodge organised a honeymoon dinner in the private library.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER OMAN The leaves are falling in the Northern Hemisphere, but it's an almost endless summer amid the golden, sun-baked dunes of Oman. Come for the diverse landscapes that range from the dramatic fjords of Musandam to the vast deserts of the Wahiba Sands; stay to discover the country's rich history and well-preserved heritage, with ancient forts, souks, and spiced cuisine adding colour to your trip. Stay in the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, where opulent interiors and an initiation into Oman's ancient culture awaits.

"We then transferred to paradise where we stayed at Constance Prince Maurice, Mauritius. While here, we took a private boat tour around the picture-perfect beaches including Flic En Flac, where talcum powder sands and watersports greeted us. Our adventurous sides loved La Vallée Des Couleurs Nature Park where we enjoyed exhilarating quad biking, luging and the longest zipline in the Indian Ocean. "Back at the hotel, we made a reservation at Le Barachois for our final evening. A candle lit pontoon led us to a floating table amongst the mangroves where we were served fine dining cuisine with locally sourced ingredients. It was the best way to end a very special holiday.”

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER PHUKET Round off the year among Thailand's sensorily stimulating gems, where unbridled natural beauty and romatic retreats are the order of the day. Marvel at the otherworldly Phi Phi Islands, visit atmospheric temples and shrines, or soothe the soul (and sore muscles) with exceptional spa experiences. Phuket delights the senses: with serene secret beaches contrasting effervescent markets overlaid with the fragrant scents of Thai cuisine. For a ultra-luxe love nest, Amanpuri – nestled among coconut groves overlooking the jade-coloured Andaman Sea – is hard to beat. 61

SWIMMING PIGS IN THE BAHAMAS “I loved my time with the pigs, however the beach was busier than it looks online. And you were not allowed to pick them up, even though IG shows influencers kissing their little snouts. Surprisingly, I preferred our encounter with nurse sharks. It was just my partner and I in the shallows feeding about 30 very friendly sharks." Lauren Godfrey, Head of Marketing 62

SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS To increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis book your tour for the first night of your trip. If it’s cancelled due to bad weather, you may be able to reschedule for another night of your holiday. AVOID INDIA'S CROWDS Did you know the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise? Set your alarm to be the first in the queue to get a snap without huge crowds.

FLOATING BREAKFASTS “I love images of floating breakfasts in private pool villas… but have you tried eating granola from a bowl or buttering a croissant when your breakfast is precariously balancing on the water? Mine started to sink in the end, so after we got some lovely pictures, we relocated to the terrace and ate off a table instead.” Claire Baker, Concierge

Have you ever tried eating granola or buttering a croissant when your breakfast is precariously balancing on the water?

COACHELLA FASHION FAUX PAS The outfits at Coachella are sometimes more impressive than the main stage, but its location in the desert means that the air is very dusty once the wind picks up after dark. Bring a stylish bandana or scarf to tie around your face. SWINGS IN BALI “The western side of Gili T is where you’ll see the sunrise and get those famous Bali sunset swing pictures. However what you don't see are the long queues. Pictures from the beach are much quieter but remember your water shoes as in low tide the walk is strewn with washed-up coral which is very sharp on your feet.” Jadeene Burrage, Snr Marketing Exec

A MOMENT IN MOROCCO Don't just visit Morocco's desert on a short tour to secure your social media content; stay overnight! Evening tours include quad biking, camel rides and a meal with performers, however an overnight stay in a luxury desert camp with infinity pools, incredible views and amazing stargazing opportunities beats a coach back to your city hotel. SANTORINI SUNSET The popular snap of Santorini's impressive sunset and Oia's rooftops is spectacular... but what isn't are the hordes of tourists all vying for the same shot. Beat the crowds by reserving a bed at Nobu Santorini's impressive pool, perfectly positioned to enjoy the sky's show from a lounger with a cocktail in hand. Plus, they offer a delicious meze menu from 7pm.

PARIS' SECRET ENTRANCE The Louvre has four entrances. Most visitors go via the main doors through the famous I. M. Pei glass pyramid, but to skip the long lines, use The Louvre Porte des Lions entrance. Note it's only open on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. MARINA BAY SANDS' RESTRICTIONS Singapore's skyline defining landmark, the suspended infinity pool at Marina Bay Sands is a must visit, but it's strictly reserved for hotel guets. To get the same experience without staying the night, reserve a table at one of three rooftop restaurants and lounges. UNINTERUPTED COLOSSEUM VIEWS Turn left on via del Fagutale, into the gates, and enjoy a quiet photoshoot with an amazing backdrop. 63

WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T

MIX BUSINESS WITH PLEASURE? We unpack the latest trend that combines work and play, ensuring business trips are never boring

A hybrid travel style where professionals incorporate leisure activities into business trips. It allows individuals to combine work obligations with personal exploration and relaxation in a single journey. In today's fast-paced business world, the lines between work and play are blurring, and with more people travelling for business again, it's hard to retain a healthy balance. A concept that has gained remarkable traction is "bleisure travel." So much so, that according to a study by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), more than 80% of business travellers have extended their work trips for leisure purposes at least once in the past year.

bleisure travel a game changer? Beyond the allure of exploring new destinations, it offers a plethora of benefits. From enhancing productivity by managing your workload more efficiently thanks to a well-needed leisure break to immersing yourself in local culture, cuisine and attractions during downtime. It also increases networking opportunities with after-meeting nights out and can improve your wellbeing by giving you the opportunity to unwind.

This innovative trend empowers solo travellers to make the most of their business trips by seamlessly blending work with leisure, transforming mundane corporate travel into a fulfilling and memorable experience. So what makes

In this era of "bleisure," business trips are no longer a tedious duty but a dual-purpose adventure, offering both professional growth and personal enrichment. Seize the world as your workplace and leisure playground.

66

Over 80% of business travellers have extended their work trips for leisure at least once in the last year

BRING ALONG YOUR LOVED ONES Now you have mastered the art of bleisure travel alone, why not bring somebody with you? Enrich your trip even more by bringing family, your partner, or close friends to transform it into a memorable experience. Business meeting in Paris? Pack your significant other for an afternoon on the Seine and evening dinner up the Eiffel Tower. Got little ones? Invite the whole gang on your work trip to Abu Dhabi where kids can enjoy the hotel facilities before spending quality evenings and days off together. And don’t forget your friends. We’re certain they will keep themselves busy in New York until it’s time for you to clock off. Sharing your business travel experiences with loved ones fosters a stronger bond and creates lasting memories. Whether it's savouring local cuisine together, discovering new cultural nuances, or embarking on sightseeing adventures during your downtime, the shared moments become cherished stories for years to come. INCORPORATE SOME 'ME' TIME Wellness has become a paramount consideration for bleisure travellers, as the blending of business and leisure offers a unique opportunity to nurture one's physical and mental health. Before departing, find ways to travel more comfortably, as this can significantly contribute to your overall wellbeing. Flying via private jet, for instance, reduces the stress associated with commercial air travel eliminating long security lines, crowded cabins, and flight delays. This luxury transport option not only saves time but also enables you to relax and rejuvenate during the journey itself. Once in destination, you have a plethora of wellness options to consider. Amid the hustle and bustle of work, taking moments to decompress is crucial. Strategies for stress relief include practising yoga, indulging in spa treatments, eating balanced meals or even considering a wellness retreat at the end of your trip. Embracing wellness while travelling for work enhances the overall quality of your stay, leaving you recharged and ready to tackle both professional and personal adventures.

BLEISURE VS LISNESS You may be wondering about the whisperings of “lisness” and how the not too dissimilar trends differ. Bleisure travel suggests that you enhance your business trip with activites and extra time in destination, while lisness is a leisure-based trip that lends time to fit in work. After a turbulent few years, we've all wanted to improve our work life balance; in a post covid world, more people than ever have opted to work from home or a hybrid model. Because of this, lots of us have used our initiative to make our home office transportable, so a long weekend away no longer requires you to eat into your holiday allowance. People are also choosing to travel for longer and work flexible hours which sees them getting the job done in their own time. It’s personal travel with the ability to work simultaneously.

Every July, the who’s-who in tech, finance, politics, media and sport descend via private jet to the Allen & Co. Sun Valley Conference. hosted and funded by private investment company Allen & Co. Informally known as the ‘summer camp for billionaires’, the four-day event combines networking and golf with talks and panels. The full line up is kept under wraps, along with the exclusive invite list, however last year, the total wealth of all attendees was reportedly more than $1 trillion. 68

WHAT DO WE KNOW? We know some of the guests. Business titans Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have all attended the conference. And for 2023, the invite list included Oprah Winfrey, NBA commissioners, the CEOs at Netflix and columnists for The New York Times. Sun Valley Resort in Idaho is the base for the annual billionaire camp and has been since conception. It has a range of deluxe accommodation plus a 20,000 square

HOW TO HOW TO PLAN YOUR OWN SUN VALLEY CONFERENCE IN THE UK Do you want to incentivise your employees with a work trip with a difference? Here are five top tips to help you plan your own secret summer camp 1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Choose a five star country estate with plenty of outdoor pursuits. We recommend Scotland’s Gleneagles that boasts a lake, three golf courses, a shooting school, spa, equestrian centre and more. 2. KEEP THE DETAILS DISCREET Promote the location but have the itinerary shrouded in mystery. And don’t forget to throw in a few surprises like private dinner entertainment, helicopter arrival or deluxe goody bags. 3. KEEP THE GUEST LIST EXCLUSIVE Plus, the targets that need to be attained to be extended an invitation should be high, but achievable. You want to give your staff something to work towards, but not so difficult that they won’t bother trying. 4. MIX WORK WITH PLAY Although it may be an incentive trip to reward employees, take a leaf out of Allen & Co's book and allocate a short amount of time for a business update too. foot spa, yoga studio and glass-enclosed outdoor pool. However, it's the outstanding things to do and scenic location that attract the world’s rich list. The mountains here come with a to do list as tall as they are. The snow-covered peaks are perfect for skiing and boarding while come summer, the postcard scenery invites you to go fly fishing, horseback riding, boating, hiking and cycling. HOW CAN I BE PART OF THE SECRET BILLIONAIRE CLUB? If you’re not within the world’s point one percent financially, fear not. You can still enjoy Sun Valley Resort for your family holiday, company incentive trip or next ski getaway. Call our expert team on 0203 816 0972 to discover more.

CHAMPNEYS: A SPA TO THE STARS We had a cuppa with Stephen Purdew, owner and director of Champneys, where we discussed wellness trends, travel, and what it takes to run a successful UK spa brand

Elevated by its roster of celebrity clientele but backed up by almost a century of experience within health, beauty, and wellbeing; Champneys defines British spas. Born in 1925, the brand’s pioneering concepts have inspired generations and lured some of pop culture’s biggest icons from politicians through to Hollywood royalty. And at the heart of it all is one man: Stephen Purdew. “Champneys has a strong heritage,” he exclaims proudly. “However, the key for us is giving customers good service, providing great value and being professional. And I believe the staff are paramount to this. 70

“If you don’t have the staff and an excellent training programme that’s true to the heritage of the brand, then it doesn’t matter how thick your carpet is or how the spa looks. That’s just furniture. If the massage is no good, then there’s no point. It’s all about the people at the end of the day.”

It doesn’t matter how thick your carpet is. If the massage is no good, then there’s no point

brand for our market so we acquired that. We then named all the resorts we had as Champneys, developed the spas and created the healthy food ranges. Champneys now employs 1,800 people and is the biggest spa brand in the UK and Europe.”

Stephen’s matter-of-fact approach to business is refreshing, and surely plays a pivotal role in the reason he and the Champneys brand is so successful. But why wellness?

SIX SUPERB STAYS With six locations around the UK; four spa resorts within stunning countryside locations and two boutique hotels, surely Stephen has to have a favourite…

“We already owned the collection of health resorts and in 2002 we believed that Champneys was the

“I have a different sentimental attachment to each one,” he said. “Henlow Grange was the first resort

I bought. We’ve had some great memories in Springs. Forest Mere is where I lived for 10 years and it was where I was brought up so that will always have a special attachment to me. And then Champneys Tring - the original health resort and our flagship - I have lived there for the last 25 years and now it will always be home.” ESTEEMED GUESTS Champneys’ guestlist is undeniably impressive. A favourite of Princess Diana’s, the resorts have seen pop stars, actors, actresses, politicians and sports stars don the spa’s signature fluffy white robes. “Staying at Champneys is an aspirational thing to do,” Stephen says. “It’s just like going to Scott’s in London. Everyone has dreams of going there so you get the whole world turn up. There aren’t many people who haven’t been to Champneys. Barbara Streisand, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Mel Gibson and Tony Blair… the list

goes on and on. Gazza and Frank Bruno were regulars during their heyday – it’s quite incredible really.” TRENDS AND TREATMENTS You don’t get to be a household name without offering a relaxing menu of signature treatments that fuse technique and skill with cutting-edge technology; and Champneys does this with its own flair. “Massages are the most popular treatments that we offer, and we have lots of specialist facials too,” Stephen explains. “We also have doctors and acupuncturists, we do colonic irrigations, and we offer cryotherapy in our unique freeze chamber.” When asked how Champneys keeps up with – or stays ahead of – the wellness trends, Stephen stated: “The basics to wellness do not change. There are trends that come and go, but the quality of a massage or a facial never changes.”

FROM FOOTBALL TO FLIGHTS Away from work, what does the owner of a string of successful health spas do for fun? “I love watching Arsenal. That takes up most of my time,” Stephen jokes. As well as travelling up and down the country visiting his spas, he also jet sets internationally as much as possible. In fact, Stephen was catching a flight to Dubai just a few hours after this interview took place. “I go away to the South of France a lot. I don’t think you can beat it. But I also love Cape Town. Before Covid, I used to travel to Miami quite a bit but I have stopped going because of the exchange rate. But when I did visit, I liked to stay at Faena Hotel Miami Beach. I’ve also been visiting India, namely Goa, Delhi and Mumbai, on and off for the past 25 years.” As a seasoned traveller, Stephen has tried a lot of hotels, but claims 71

his favourite resort in the world is in Dubai. “I’ve stayed at The Four Seasons, I’ve been to Bulgari and I’ve stayed at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, but for me Jumeirah Al Naseem is my number one hotel. It’s got great service, lovely rooms, has a nice position and the restaurants are very good. I go between two and three times each year.” Also, a big fan of The Kulm in St. Moritz and Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris, you would assume that Stephen’s almost endless list of countries visited must mean everywhere is ticked off the bucket list. But that’s not the case. “The one place I haven’t been but would like to visit is Istanbul.” WHY WINGED BOOTS? “I book all my travel – and have done for a while – through Winged Boots because I get a very good service. Whenever I have encountered problems, they 72

have always been rectified quickly. That’s why I am always happy to recommend Winged Boots to my friends and family - which I have done on many occasions. “With travel, things do not always go to plan and I think that’s how you find out if a travel company is any good. It’s how your personal travel manager responds to any disruptions that highlights their worth and David,

alongside the team at Winged Boots, have a good and very honest ethos on that." THE NEXT CHAPTER In the midst of planning a four-week trip to Bali, Thailand and Singapore, Stephen is also flirting with the idea of launching Champneys first international spa. “I can’t say too much just yet, but we’re hopeful for spring 2024,” he said. Watch this space...

STEPHEN PURDEW RECOMMENDS

EIGHT OF THE BEST

GOLF COURSES IN THE US © Joann Dost. Reproduced by permission of Pebble Beach Company.

Nine irons at the ready. Discover Winged Boots' favourite golf courses in America, handpicked by our managing director and avid golfer, David Ox

"Some of the best golf courses in the world are located in the United States; along with some of the most prestigious country clubs. From California's coastal bluffs to Las Vegas' famous desert, the sport provides a gateway to America's varied scenery. Scottsdale is becoming more and more popular for golfing getaways which is hardly surprising. The city has more than 200 courses! Plus, the warm and dry climate provides the perfect conditions for a round of 18. Of course, no USA golf listing could be complete without at least a mention of Masters' host Augusta National in Georgia. It's top-shelf, out-of-reach status only elevates its authority in the golfing world. However there are also plenty of fantastic public courses in the states, and my curated round-up." 76

Courtesy of Pebble Beach Company

PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKS™ PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA Enjoy the round of a lifetime under the Californian sun. Pebble Beach Golf Links™ is unanimously rated the number one public course in the USA. Hosting every major tournament within the sport, it has committed to a further seven dates for the Women’s Open and U.S Opens with the latter locked in until 2044. The 18-holes are complemented by the rugged coastline but don’t let the picturesque ocean views distract you. The elevated greens and challenging bunkers make for a stimulating game, and the 18th hole is considered one of the best finishing holes in the country.

TORREY PINES SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA Towering above the Pacific Ocean, Torrey Pines is the emerald of San Diego’s coast. Encompassing two championship courses designed by legendary architect William P. Bell (and completed by his son William F. Bell), each course tests a player’s skill with tight fairways, lush rough, ample bunkering and exceptional length. The South Course undertook an extensive remodelling back in 2001 by celebrated golf designer Rees Jones which was met with universal acclaim. Other facilities available include a driving range, putting greens and a delicious restaurant.

THREE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS AMERICAN COURSES

CYPRESS POINT CLUB Located in California's Pebble Beach, its exclusive locale encompasses rocky coast, sand dunes, pine woods and cypress trees.

SHADOW CREEK LAS VEGAS, NEVADA Sculpted from the Nevada desert by renowned architect Tom Fazio, this course proclaims to be a masterpiece… and we’d have to agree. It was born via complete environment manipulation, carving rolling hills and canyons from flat desert floor and pumping in plenty of water: The $47 million price tag was money well spent. Every hole has distinct characteristics which make a score of par an achievement. The manicured fairways are located 30 minutes from the strip however you can only arrive via MGM limousine and if you're a guest at one of MGM's Vegas hotels.

TPC SCOTTSDALE STADIUM COURSE SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale is most famous for its par-3, 16th hole that has earnt the nickname ‘The Colosseum’ as 20,000 spectators encircle the hole in a stadium-style setting. But it's so much more than the television theatrics. The glorious greens were purpose built to host the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open – which it has since 1987. The course plays to over 7,200 yards from the tournament tees, but the fairways are a little more forgiving than its US counterparts. After a round of 18, head to the grand clubhouse to celebrate at Toro Restaurant and Rum Bar.

RIVIERA COUNTRY CLUB A beacon for professionals and California’s elite, this course has hosted many distinguished tournaments and soon will add the 2028 Olympic Games to its list.

AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB Voted number one in the world and host to the the Masters Tournament since 1934, it’s easy to see why Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are members. 77

RYDER CUP 2025

SCOTSDALE

The Ryder Cup is returning stateside in September 2025. Heading to NYC, world-renowned Bethpage Black Course is its host. CAN I PLAY ON BETHPAGE BLACK COURSE? Yes, you can! The club operates a slick reservation system that limits bookings to one every 28 days. It allows residents to book up to one week in advance and out-of-state or international players just five days ahead of tee-off. However, the club’s first hour of tee times are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis; so you may be lucky to snag a spot just by turning up. IS BLACK COURSE EASY? Please note the course is not for beginners. It infamously sports a warning sign at the first hole which reads: “The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we only recommend for highly skilled golfers.” That explains why it regularly ranks in the top 10 lists for America’s toughest golfing greens. HOW CAN I WATCH THE RYDER CUP 2025? Winged Boots has flight and hotel packages available to book now. To discover more, contact us today on 0203 816 0972

BETHPAGE BLACK COURSE LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK One of the five 18-hole regulation golf courses in NYC's Bethpage State Park Golf Course, The Black course has graced many top rankings… usually within the single digits. It boasts 100 years of tradition, making it one of the most popular and cherished courses in the whole of the United States.

It has previously hosted the United States Open Championships as well as The PGA Championship, and in 2025 the Ryder Cup will be added to the course's list of prestigious events: marking the second time the cup has been hosted in New York. The course is tricky. Every shot and skill is put to the test throughout the 18-holes so complacency has no business here.

MANHATTAN RYDER CUP 2025 HOTEL ADVICE “I'd suggest staying in Manhattan and using the city's fantastic transport links to reach Long Island. The train is reasonably priced, takes an hour and a half, and departs from Grand Central Station. Alternatively, the ferry (departing hourly from East 90th Street) is a short, and scenic, 20-minute journey."

Now in its fifth year, The Extra Mile is the name of our customer event series. Encompassing dinners, corporate hospitality and live entertainment, our events are a way for us to meet you face-to-face, and thank you for choosing Winged Boots for your travel needs. In 2023 alone, we hosted 350 customers across 11 events which included a charity shoot day; a private dinner at Sexy Fish; a track day with Aston Martin; and watched Disney On Ice, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Micky Flanagan, and Peter Kay at The O2. Plus, we supported Haven House Children’s Hospice by taking a table at their 20th anniversary gala which raised £174,625 for the charity.

After attending an overnight trip to the home of golf, St Andrews in Scotland, Winged Boots customer Daniel Trew said: “Winged Boots never disappoints. The attention to detail and the client experience puts them above and beyond any travel firm I have ever used. The recent trip to St. Andrews was exceptional from start to finish. The accommodation exceeded expectations, and to play the Old Course in such fine company was truly memorable. Thanks again Winged Boots for the invitation and impeccable hospitality.” To register your interest to attend a The Extra Mile event, email marketing@wingedboots.co.uk

ATLANTIS THE ROYAL THE PALM, DUBAI, UAE

David Ox, Winged Boots’ Managing Director, recently stayed at Atlantis The Royal. Read his honest review about the new Palm resort

It has the highest collection of celebrity chef restaurants in the world

“I was very fortunate to stay at Atlantis The Royal for four nights, three months after it had opened. I stayed in a one-bedroom suite with butler service and amazing Palm views.

MIDDLE EAST

“Atlantis The Royal is a destination hotel: you never need to leave. It has the highest collection of celebrity chef restaurants than anywhere else in the world and all restaurants are open for hotel guests as well as non-residents. Children are only allowed to dine between 18.30 and 20.30, so my top tip for visitors with younger kids is to make your reservations in advance. “I stayed with my wife and young son, so one evening we used the fantastic babysitter service and enjoyed contemporary Asian flavours at Ling Ling. Other nights, we made use of the quick shuttle service and dined in neighbouring resort Atlantis, The Palm. My son loves the aquarium and one evening we ate in Wavehouse before a game of bowling. “There’s an adults-only rooftop pool that had house music playing but we spent most of our time around the main pool, and one day had use of a cabana which was incredible. It was air-conditioned, had a private shower and toilet, a TV, fridge and great location. “Early evening, we really enjoyed spending time in the sunken seating area overlooking the dancing fountains. I can’t wait to return to Atlantis The Royal. It’s an amazing hotel and well worth a visit!”

LONDON

TUSCANY

Whether it’s fine Italian wines or awe-inspiring artworks that have your heart, this 10-night tour beautifully balances both as it takes you from the undulating landscapes of Tuscany to the inimitable city of Venice. We begin in Val D’Orcia, a magnificent swathe of archetypal Tuscan countryside, and in the equally majestic Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco. Comprising opulent suites and sprawling private pool villas coupled with sweeping vistas and superior finishing touches, this hotel redefines classical Italian elegance. You’ll find yourself nestled amid ancient vineyards, and so it would be rude not to indulge in a little wine tasting. Following five nights in Tuscany, it’s on to the second half in Italy’s iconic floating city. Known as the City of Canals, the City of Masks, and the Queen of the Adriatic, Venice has many faces. One thing’s for certain, however: your time here will leave an indelible impression. Staying at the lavishly restored Gritti Palace, enjoy an intimate after hours tour of Saint Mark’s Basilica.
