Ayutthaya draws you into Thailand’s former capital, where UNESCO-listed temple ruins rise from the riverbanks, including Wat Mahathat’s Buddha head that can be seen entwined in tree roots.

Renowned for some of Thailand’s clearest waters, this island draws divers and snorkellers with vibrant coral reefs, while relaxed beach life and lively evenings create an easy, sociable atmosphere.

Thailand,REGION BY REGION

Thailand is not a single story but a tapestry of distinct landscapes, cultures and rituals, where each region reveals its own secret. From spiritual temples and lively cities to fragrant cuisine and postcard-worthy beaches, every stop adds depth to your journey. This destination guide offers a curated overview of the country’s most compelling areas, helping you tailor your Thailand holiday, your way.

CHIANG MAI

Chiang Mai sits at the cultural heart of northern Thailand, where temples and mountains shape the landscape. Visit Wat Phra Singh and Doi Suthep with a guide who can unpack the symbolism behind Lanna architecture and rituals. The night markets remain a draw, with sizzling street food and handmade souvenirs ideal for those back home. Beyond the city, spend time in the hills at ethical elephant sanctuaries or lesser known villages. Visit a traditional craft studio, showcasing ceramics and textiles, to add local context that most travellers often miss.

TOP TIP

Visit temples at first light to spot monks on their morning rounds.

CLAIRE'S

BANGKOK

Thailand’s capital engages your senses. Tuk tuks cut through traffic with a constant edge of noise, while street-side kitchens carry chilli, lime and smoke into the air. At the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, Thailand's culture unfolds befor you, while The Chao Phraya river offers a different contrast with boats that move past timber houses and working canals. Afternoons turn inward to art galleries, luxury shopping or maybe pampering at a spa. Then the city opens up again with markets, late tables and open-air kitchens, before shifting to precise, high-level dining above the streets. A rooftop bar is essential.

KANCHANABURI

Kanchanaburi offers a different perspective on Thailand that's grounded in history. The Bridge over the River Kwai and Death Railway remain central, best understood through nearby museums. Beyond this, Erawan’s tiered waterfalls, river journeys and floating raft stays bring you closer to the surroundings.

KOH PHANGAN

Extending beyond it's full-moon party reputation, luxury travellers can be beckoned to this paradisal isle by it's hidden beaches, jungle trails and waterfalls. Enjoy long lunches and late dinners with your toes in the sand while yoga spaces and lavish hotels create room for a total switch off. This is true island living.

KRABI

Krabi is shaped by limestone cliffs and clear water, with longtail boats linking beaches, hidden coves and islands that invite true exploration. Mangroves and viewpoints add range inland, while fresh seafood barbecues at sunset remain one of the coast’s simplest pleasures to enjoy.

CHIANG RAI

Explore Chiang Rai through its famed White and Blue Temples, then head into Mae Salong for rolling tea estates and mountain views. Trace Golden Triangle history along the Mekong, visit hill tribe communities and take unhurried river journeys through a region that rewards time, curiosity, and perspective.

Pai is a small mountain town with a laid-back, community feel. It’s a natural paradise with hot springs, waterfalls made for swimming and impressive canyon views. In the town, sip a cold bottle of Chang and eat from local food stalls, creating an atmosphere that feels like home despite being worlds away.

Koh Samui offers a more polished take on Thailand’s islands without losing character. Visit Ang Thong Marine Park by boat, explore temples like Wat Plai Laem and stop at Na Muang waterfalls. Evenings move between beach bars and low key spots where gaeng som (a spicy, sour yellow curry) is a must try.

THE JOURNEYS OF Thailand

Thailand’s most established routes cover key locations ideal for most first time travellers. Northern Thailand centres around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where temples, markets and elephant dotted landscapes shape the experience. Further south, the Andaman coast shifts the pace, with Phuket, Krabi and surrounding islands making time to kick back and relax.

These routes form the backbone of many Thai itineraries, but they are only the start. We adjust the flow with the right guides and timing, then extend the journey with national parks, quieter islands or overland stays that add variety without overcomplicating the trip.

Temples, Tribes & ELEPHANT TRAILS

BANGKOK • CHIANG MAI • CHIANG RAI SEVEN NIGHTS

Your journey through Northern Thailand begins in Bangkok at The Siam. Set on the Chao Phraya river, the hotel removes you from the busy pace while still placing you within reach. Your private guide will take you through Bangkok’s temples, including the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, followed by a longtail boat through the city’s khlongs, before dinner above the bustle at a rooftop restaurant.

Next is a stay at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai boasting suspended pavilion rooms and pool villas. Spend your morning with a local chef, sourcing ingredients before a hands on cooking session, then head into the hills with expert guides for a full day trek through hilltribe villages, offering genuine interaction rather than a staged visit.

The final stop is Chiang Rai, with two nights at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp. Here, the experience is centred on elephants; time is spent walking alongside them with resident specialists, observing their behaviour at close range. A private boat trip along the Mekong brings you to the point where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. As evening draws in, you''ll spend the night beneath the stars in a Jungle Bubble; redefining what it means to bring the outside in.

WINGED BOOTS WISDOM

"In northern Thailand, not all experiences are conducted with the level of care we expect, particularly with elephant camps and hilltribe visits. Booking through Winged Boots ensures access to vetted, ethical wildlife encounters and community-led excursions where your presence directly supports the people who host you."

ONE DAY IN AYUTTHAYA

1.5

hours from Bangkok

From Bangkok, Ayutthaya makes an easy day trip into the UNESCO-listed former capital, where you must visit Wat Mahathat, Wat Chaiwatthanaram and river temples to understand more about Thailand’s early kingdom.

TWO NIGHTS IN PAI 3-hours from Chiang Mai

For added beauty, include Pai. Mountain roads lead to hot springs, waterfalls and Pai Canyon, while the town leans into café culture and night markets. Immerse yourself and try tubing - a memorable river float.

TWO NIGHTS AT THE BUSH CAMP 1-hour from Chiang Mai

Stay two nights at The Bush Camp in Chiang Mai for a considered introduction to ethical elephant experiences. Spend time walking alongside them and learning from handlers whose role is rooted in care rather than display.

ONE DAY IN CHIANG KHONG

1.5

hours from Chiang Rai

Spend a day along the Mekong, visiting Wat Phra Kaew to see the giant catfish gathering at the river’s edge. Explore the temple grounds, take a longtail boat, then linger over lunch before returning to Chiang Rai.

SPOTLIGHT ON The River Kwai

Our Personal Travel Manager Gemma gives her insights on this unqiue location in Northern Thailand.

"The River Kwai flows through Kanchanaburi in western Thailand, around two hours from Bangkok. It’s known for its history, but what stays with you is how naturally it sits within the landscape.

"The bridge spans the river just outside town and forms part of the Thailand Burma Railway, built during the Second World War to connect Thailand and Myanmar. Referred to as the Death Railway, it stands as a reminder of the thousands of prisoners of war and labourers who lost their lives during its construction. Today, trains still cross it daily. Visit the Thailand Burma Railway Centre and nearby cemeteries for context, handled with care. Hellfire Pass then reveals the railway’s scale, carved through rock by hand.

"Back in Kanchanaburi, the tone shifts. The town sits easily along the river, with restaurants and cafés lining the waterfront. It’s a place for long lunches overlooking the water or an unplanned wander through local, trinket-filled markets.

"A short drive out, Erawan National Park changes the pace again. Its tiered waterfalls, set within dense forest, are the main draw. The water is clear, almost glass like, with pools made for swimming. Each level feels slightly different, so it’s worth walking further up.

"For something genuinely distinctive, stay at The Floathouse, an overwater retreat on the River Kwai. Villas sit directly above the water, gently swaying with the current, while lantern lit evenings and the surrounding jungle create a setting that feels completely removed from the outside world.

"Between the river, countryside and its history, Kanchanaburi and The River Kwai offers more than one reason to visit; be sure to add it to your list."

West Coast DISCOVERIES

PHUKET • PHI PHI ISLANDS • KRABI • KOH LANTA 10 NIGHTS

This west coast trip starts and ends in Phuket joining the Andaman’s most popular stops.

Begin at Rosewood Phuket, a luxury hotel renowned for it's exceptional spa facilities and farm-to-table cuising. Spend time in Phuket's Old Town, head to the Big Buddah for sunrise and soak up the sublime food scene on offer.

Koh Lanta is the final island to visit, and the slowest of the four. Pimalai Resort & Spa sits within rainforest above a long beach, with space to properly switch off. Think beach walks, sunset dinners and very little need to plan.

WINGED BOOTS WISDOM

"Did you know Thailand has its own micro-climates? A detail that makes a real difference when you’re planning around the weather. If you’re travelling during the UK summer, you’ll want to stay on the east coast for the best chance of sun. Come UK winter, it’s the west coast and north that tend to deliver far more reliable conditions."

TWO NIGHTS IN KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK

2.5-3 hours from Phuket

These protected islands are best visited as a day trip for some of Thailand’s clearest water. Snorkel over coral reefs filled with fish and turtles, swim from white sand beaches, then return to the mainland.

ONE DAY IN KOH NGAI 30-45 minutes from Koh Lanta

This car-free isle is ideal for a day trip to see Thailand’s untouched side. The water and beach are both pristine, ideal for snorkelling and sunbathing, then visit Koh Mook’s Emerald Cave, easily reached by boat.

THREE NIGHTS IN KOH YAO NOI

30-minutes - 1-hour from Krabi

Koh Yao Noi offers a slow take on Thailand, best experienced at Six Senses. Spend your time between private pool villas and quiet beaches, with boat trips through Phang Nga Bay and kayaking along the coastline.

ONE DAY IN KOH RACHA NOI

Koh Racha Noi is perfect for a day trip focused on diving. The water is exceptionally clear, with strong visibility and deeper sites. Expect reef sharks, rays and vibrant marine life, with calmer bays for surface intervals.

ONE DAY ON JAMES BOND ISLAND

45-minutes - 1-hour from Phuket

This iconic stop in Phang Nga Bay draws visitors for its appearance in 'The Man with the Golden Gun'. Arrive by traditional longtail boat to see the dramatic limestone formation rising sharply from the water.

DISCOVER THE

East Islands

"Extend your Thailand stay with a visit to the eastern islands. Take a 1-hour flight from Phuket to Koh Samui, your gateway to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, both reached in under 1 hour 30 minutes by boat.

"Koh Samui is where you lean into long lunches at Fisherman’s Village, enjoy boat trips to Ang Thong Marine Park and start and end evenings with beachside cocktails. Stay at Samujana Villas for your own private pool oasis, just outside the hubbub.

"Koh Phangan isn't just for full moon parties and drinks in buckets. At Anantara Rasananda, the mood is serious luxury.

Beyond the hotel, empty beaches beckon along with boat trips to bays that hide idyllic snorkelling spots.

"Then there is Koh Tao, still Thailand’s strongest east coast choice for diving, with a collection of coral gardens, turtles and clear water pulling you offshore.

"For something more discreet, consider adding Koh Kood, a small Thai island close to Cambodia. It's often referenced as having some of the very best beaches in Thailand thanks to its remote, unspoiled location."

THAILAND'S

Finest Stays

Thailand’s luxury hotel scene is wonderfully diverse, shaped by rich cultural heritage and a breathtakingly varied landscape. Many of the country’s most iconic stays are elegant beachfront resorts where traditional Thai design, personal pools and outstanding service make way for true relaxation.

Beyond the islands, the variety continues. There are chic city hotels in Bangkok, wellness-focused hideaways in the centre and jungle retreats in the north that offer true connection to this diverse country. Each property tells a story, making where you stay in Thailand as memorable as the journey.

Aman Nai Lert is set within a private park in central Bangkok, an address that feels improbably removed from the surrounding streets. Rooms are expansive and quietly detailed, with floor to ceiling windows framing the greenery. An impressive swimming pool anchors the hotel, while the spa draws on Thai healing traditions with precision. It is Bangkok, recalibrated.

KEEMALA PHUKET

At Keemala, swap traditional rooms for a collection of treehouse; each cottage, tent, nest or villa is suspended above the jungle with its own pool. At night, look up at a fairytale village glowing among the trees. Cuisine is refined and thoughtful, much of it grown on site, while the wellness setting brings waterfalls and calm gardens into view, with a sense of complete escape.

THE SAROJIN

If a candlelit jungle dinner beside a waterfall sounds like your kind of evening, or a private, luxury boat trip through secluded national parks your kind of day, The Sarojin delivers with ease. Residences feature private pools, watersports are varied and complimentary and staff anticipate each detail, whether planning your next outing or placing a cocktail in hand.

FOUR SEASONS TENTED CAMP GOLDEN TRIANGLE

This intimate retreat has the real wow factor. Accommodations may be described as tents, but these canvas oases showcase infinite forest views, freestanding bathtubs on open air decks and traditional décor that places you in the heart of the jungle. With elephant trails and spectacular temples on your doorstep, there's nowhere quite like it.

CHIVA-SOM

Many hotels wear the badge of a wellness retreat, but Chiva-Som really is one. Each stay begins with a consultation, shaping everything from nutrition to treatments. Programmes are structured yet flexible, combining physiotherapy, holistic therapies and fitness. Meals follow your plan without feeling restrictive. You leave with habits that last, not just a sense of rest.

ANANTARA RASANANDA

Anantara Rasananda is a world away from the lively expectations of Koh Phangan, set along a soft curve of sand facing the Gulf of Thailand. Villas are generous, each with a private plunge pool and outdoor terrazzo bath. The resort’s private speedboat transfers from the mainland sets the tone, making your James Bond-esque entrance to the island one to remember.
