TIRUPUR DISTRICT

Nilgiris district major economic activity was tourism due to the presence of hills reserve forest and pleasant climate.

The Coimbatore Region is rich in terms of forest and biodiversity constituting of National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. The share of forest area in the Nilgiris and Erode district is almost 56% and 46% respectively making this region eco sensitive.

Tirupur district witnessed high industrialization and urbanization due to the presence of textile and hosiery industries.

COIMBATORE REGION COIMBATORE DISTRICT Coimbatore is one of the four Metropolitan cities in the region and consists of second highest number of non-metropolitan cities and census towns.

TOPOGRAPHY The topography within 2 miles of Coimbatore contains only modest variations in elevation, with a maximum elevation change of 154 feet and an average elevation above sea level of 1,376 feet. Within 10 miles contains only modest variations in elevation (3,914 feet). Within 50 miles also contains extreme variations in elevation (8,583 feet).

There is a major bypass Built by L&T from Neelambur to Madukkarai on NH 47 which intersects trichy road at Chintamani Pudur near Irugur and Eachanari in Pollachi Road. The Coimbatore Corporation is undertaking the construction of six Rail-Over-Bridges in the city.

Current transport conditions Walking and cycling Coimbatore has some moderate quality footpaths on streets including T. V. Swamy Road and D. B. Road. In addition, there is a high quality walkway along the Race Course. However, footpaths are narrow or completely absent on most streets in the city. Where present, footpaths are often encroached by electrical boxes, poles, and parking. Busy market streets, such as NSR Road and the Town Hall road, as well as major public transport corridors, such as Trichy Road and Avinashi Rd, lack safe and continuous footpaths, cycling tracks, and pedestrian crossings.

Coimbatore Junction, also known as Kovai Junction, is the primary railway station serving the city of Coimbatore. It has six platforms. It is a Major Railway junction in South India and the Second busiest and revenue yielding railway station in Tamil Nadu after Chennai. Many trains from Kerala to other parts of the country pass through Coimbatore Junction apart from 18 pairs of terminating express trains. It is one of the top booking stations in India according to Indian Railway

Coimbatore International Airport (IATA: CJB, ICAO: VOCB) is a major airport mostly serving Coimbatore and its suburbs in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The Coimbatore International Airport is the second busiest airport in Tamil Nadu after Chennai International Airport, in terms of passenger traffic, cargo traffic as well as aircraft movement. The Coimbatore International Airport serves as the city's airport for both domestic and international flights.

ECO-RESTORATION OF 8 LAKES, Coimbatore Smart City

• Presently, the lakes in Coimbatore which are important component of its cultural heritage suffer in a state of neglect and disrepair. These sewage-carrying, debris-ridden lakes can be easily transformed into the city’s new ‘public realm’ and can be made to harness eco-system services to help the city become more sustainable and liveable for the future. The lake system built by the Cholas 1200 years back, was an intricate interconnected-system, where water flowing into the Noyall Valley from the surrounding hills of Western Ghats is first intercepted by these lakes and overflows of which then feed subsequent lakes, before finally connecting to the River. The Coimbatore Smart City Plan list out 8 lakes situated North of Noyall River valley, which are fed by canals from overflow weirs constructed on River Noyall and storm-water streams originating in the Western Ghats situated further north of the Noyall basin. Making connections by identifying and working on the MISSING LINKS the 8 lakes project for Coimbatore Smart city focuses on following three areas: • Water linkages • Green linkages • Walking and cycling linkages AIM

to create cross-sectoral solutions to create a unique opportunity for the city to re-align itself to protect, conserve and celebrate its rich cultural heritage and help tackle problems of sewage pollution.

In Ukkadam Periyakulam the renovation work is progressing very fast as it has to be completed by end of December, Footpaths, Site seeing points for the public, seating’s for visitors are some highlights which can be seen from the ongoing work. It’s said that an Island has been planned in the center of the pool and the Island is all set to receive birds like Pelicans, Rosy Pelicans, Sarus cranes, Painted Stork etc. As the first phase of development, the renovation work has been started in an area of 1.2 KM in the pool and the proposed amenities include Children’s play area, boat rides, Canteen, and bicycle riding lanes for the public. This pool will have only treated water and the water treatment will be done by a new treatment plant that will be constructed in the on route to the canal.
