2017 RARE & FINE WINE AUCTION FEATURED WINEMAKER: CHUCK WAGNER Chuck Wagner has spent his life in the vineyards of Rutherford, near the center of Napa Valley, steering his family’s business from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Through the years, he has lived through many changes and has been recognized for his winemaking and industry leadership – but he still holds onto a deep humility as well as appreciation for great wine, family and the connections between the two.

Chuck was just 19 when he joined his parents in 1972 to create Caymus Vineyards, taking them up on their proposal to sell the home wines they had been making from grapes they grew on their property. He and his father, Charlie, worked long days side by side, managing every part of the business. His mother, Lorna, took on many jobs including work on the bottling line. Lunches eaten together each day remain one of Chuck’s favorite memories, a tradition he has carried on with his own home-cooked breakfasts for his kids.

Both father and son believed in making wines with character, complexity and consistency. They embraced Napa’s unique climate and soil, helping to establish the region’s singular style and reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon.

One of the family’s most exciting moments came in 1989, when Wine Spectator awarded them “Wine of the Year” for their 1984 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. Five years later, the magazine conferred the award again for their 1990 vintage, the only wine in the world to receive this honor twice.

For Chuck, an even greater reward has come as his children have joined the business. Caymus is now part of the Wagner Family of Wine which includes Mer Soleil Chardonnay and the California blend Conundrum by Charlie, Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot made by Jenny, two of Chuck’s four children. While everyone has a unique point of view, they also share some common family traits – namely, a passion for hard work and trying out new ideas, as they balance tradition with pushing the boundaries to make even better wine.

They also get their hands dirty. Along with the rest of the family, Chuck can still be found in the vineyard and continues to experiment with farming techniques and other aspects of winemaking. He was honored in 2007 to be recognized with Wine Spectator’s Distinguished Service Award, presented to individuals who have made significant and long-lasting contributions to the wine industry. Yet despite his business success, Chuck remains largely a farmer at heart. He still believes that at the end of the day, wine is meant to be shared with family and friends. And he marvels at his good fortune to be living in Napa and working in the wine business.

2. Any statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date, age, provenance and condition is a statement or representation of fact. The WINE & FOOD FOUNDATION OF TEXAS reserves the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority considered by them to be reliable.

CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR THE RARE & FINE WINE AUCTION The printed catalog, as amended by addendums & announcements during the sale, constitutes the entire statement of Wine & Food Foundation of Texas relative to the wines listed herein.

The following Conditions of Sale and any glossary contained herein are the complete terms and conditions of which all wines are listed herein shall be offered for sale, sold or purchased. The wines will be offered and sold by Wine & Food Foundation of Texas.

1. All wines are sold “as is” and Wine & Food Foundation of Texas makes no warranties or representations of any kind or nature with respect to the wines, and in no event shall be responsible or liable for the correctness of the catalog or other description of, nor deemed to have made any representation of assumption of liability with respect hereto.

2. Wine & Food Foundation of Texas will provide a good faith estimate of the value of each purchase upon request. Each donor and/or purchaser should consult a tax professional if further guidance is needed.

3. Wine & Food Foundation of Texas reserves the right to withdraw any item at any time before actual sale.

4. Unless otherwise announced by the Auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the printed catalog. After the sale, Wine & Food Foundation’s sale record & invoice shall be conclusive in all respects.

5. Wine & Food Foundation of Texas reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event of doubt on the part of the Auctioneer as to the validity of any bid, the Auctioneer will have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or reoffer and resell the Lot. If any dispute arises after the sale, the auctioneer’s sale records shall be conclusive.

6. If the Auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the item offered, he may reject the bid and withdraw item from sale; and if having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is not of sufficient magnitude, he may reject the advance.

7. When Auctioneer declares an item “sold”, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered Lot in accordance with all conditions set forth herein and, there, upon

(a) Assume full risk and responsibility therefore,

(b) Will sign a confirmation therefore, and

(c) Will pay the full purchase price therefore.

All wines shall be removed from the Premises by the purchaser’s expense immediately after the Auction. The purchaser must be present, with personal identification or must be represented by proxy approved by WINE & FOOD FOUNDATION OF TEXAS. If the foregoing conditions or any other applicable conditions herein are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to WINE & FOOD FOUNDATION OF TEXAS by law, including without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, WINE & FOOD FOUNDATION OF TEXAS at its option may either:

(a) Cancel the sale retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser, or (b) Resell the property for the account of and at the risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, & in such event the purchaser shall be liable for the payment of any deficiency plus all costs of resale and incidental damages.

8. All Lots expire one year from date of this auction, unless otherwise indicated in the printed catalog or announced by the Auctioneer at the time of sale. Any Lots not redeemed by that date will be deemed expired and become obsolete therefore. WINE & FOOD FOUNDATION OF TEXAS shall not be responsible or liable for refunding or replacing obsolete Lots.

9. All checks for items purchased shall be made payable to The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas. Unless exempted by law from payment thereof, the purchaser may be required to pay Texas state and local retail taxes at the rate applicable at the time of purchase.

An unforgiving and powerfully structured wine with fabulous grilled meat and granite stone character with dried berry and flower petal. Full body, chewy and intense. Great structure and extremely long and intense. Sexy austerity. Gets the juices going. Best ever from here. Reminds me of the great Argianos of the 1970s but now!

2. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Campogiovanni San Felice, 750ml Rated 96 by James Suckling

Perfect aromas to this red with licorice, stone, peach pit, plum, leather, and iron. Full body, fine and silky tannins support a deep and rich fruit concentration that shows black fruit, Tuscan dust and oyster shell. Needs four or five years to soften but an amazing finish.

3. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Citille di Sopra, 750ml Rated 96 by James Suckling

This is dense and rich with amazing layers of ripe fruit and polished tannins. Hints of hazelnut and walnuts to the flavors.

Full-bodied, structured and very rich.

4. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Fattoria dei Barbi, 750ml Rated 96 by James Suckling

Aromas of burnt orange peel and cherry with hints of dried bark and mahogany. Full body, very tight and dense with a beautiful fruit, tannin and acid balance. Finesse and strength. Best wine from here for ages. Needs until 2018 to show its true quality.

5. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino La Fortuna, 750ml Rated 96 by James Suckling

Aromas of wet earth, meat and dried fruits. Some nuts and spices. Complex. Full body, with super fine tannins and

fabulous intensity and richness. Dried cherry and candied citrus fruit. Fabulous finish. You want to drink this now. But shows superb finesse and intensity. Why wait?

6. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino La Poderina-Del Cerro, 750ml Rated 94 by James Suckling A gorgeous red with dark-berry, blueberry and violet character.

Full body, fine, integrated tannins with dark chocolate, and a delicious finish. Lots of everything here. Very balanced.

7. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino La Serena, 750ml Rated 97 by James Suckling

Intense aromas of dried citrus and meat with hints of rose bush and fresh rosemary. This is full body, with full, velvety tannin and a decadent and rich finish. Fascinating flavors of spice, citrus and meat. Loads of fruit. From biodynamically grown grapes.

8. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Palazzo, 750ml Rated 98 by James Suckling

Wonderful aromas of salt, savory dried meat and red fruits.

Bacon too. This is full body, with chewy tannins and a long and intense finish. It’s like a tightly knit ball of cashmere thread. Superb. Made from four hectares of vineyards.

9. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli Siro Pacenti, 750ml Rated 96 by James Suckling

Aromas of dark berry, stone, dried Chinese mushroom, and flowers.

This is full bodied, with lots of ripe fruit and intense fruit. Layers of fruit and a long, long finish. Massive. Needs time to soften.

10. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso Ciacci Piccolomini, 750ml Rated 98 by James Suckling

Aromas of lilac, dark berry and sandalwood follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and an intense and savory finish. Very intense and very long. Succulent. Amazing balance and depth to this red. It’s so beautiful to taste now but it will be much better in five to ten years. A triumph.

11. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Renieri, 750ml Rated 95 by Wine Advocate

Renieri’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of infinite depth and personality. It makes a huge impact on the senses thanks to the power of its extract and the boldness of its aromas. This is no small Brunellino. It’s a wine of huge aspirations and horizons that will appeal to those who appreciate the extra meat and padding on display. Its overtly generous personality delivers tones of black fruit, shaved truffle, wet earth, prune, candied fruit, cigar box and wet tobacco.

12. 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Poggio Ronconi Citille di Sopra, 750ml Rated 97 by James Suckling

A dense and silky wine with blackberry, Chinese mushroom and berry character. Full body, chewy tannins and a long and intense finish.

3. 2011 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, 3L Rated 94 by Wine Spectator

2011 was a very challenging vintage as it was one of the coolest we have seen in a long time. This year our experience came in handy as we still managed to produce a quality wine, despite the rain‐spattered vintage… A rich, dense ruby color, hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant that carries through to the palate, interwoven with complex aromas of black licorice, anise and crème de cassis. On the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe dark fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich, yet has a velvety quality with supple density. Rich, fine‐grained tannins are balanced with ripe fruit, acidity and oak.

The utterly compelling 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage and 1,800 cases were made.

The wine is off-the-charts great, with an opaque bluish/purple color to the rim, an aroma of pen ink, graphite, blackberry and blueberry fruit, a hint of licorice, camphor and incense.

The wine is full-bodied, with extraordinary concentration, remarkable equilibrium and noticeable, but sweet, well integrated tannin. Dense garnet to violet, viscous mouth feel. Bright ripe fruit.

Beautiful floral and intense dark fruit aromas that are expansive in the mouth and evocative of sweet violets, raspberries, blackberries and some woodsy notes. The wine is rich and dense with an excellent balance of black fruit to tannins. Completely balanced.

Overall impression is of lots of fruit and lots of tannins with lots of layers and depths. Unified and seamless. Elixir like.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a striking wine that shows uncompromising varietal pureness, albeit in a most concentrated and elaborate form. This is what great Sangiovese is all about.

There’s so much happening on the nose and the wine brings you to cherry, spice, licorice, cured meat, pressed rose and grilled meat in equal measure. No one element overpowers the next.

Often one of the more open-knit, silky wines in the range, the CCS plays in an upper register of sweet perfumed aromatics, bright red fruit and super-finessed tannins.

A long, polished finish rounds things out in style.

2014 Morlet Family Vineyards La Proportion Doree, Sonoma County, 750ml Rated 100 by Robert Parker

The wine is absolutely out of this world. With a light greenish gold color and a killer nose of lanolin, caramelized citrus, honeysuckle, orange marmalade and candle wax, the wine displays great acidity, a magnificent, massive, full-bodied mouthfeel, and seems to come across like a Sonoma County version of a dry Haut Brion blanc. This is singular wine - profound, compelling, whatever!

The bouquet is very refined on the nose with black plum, violet and cold wet stone. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, a little more masculine at first, tightly wound with a nicely poised finish.

4. 2012 North Valley “Origin” Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills, 750ml Rated 92 by Robert Parker

Deep red. Broad, deeply perfumed black raspberry, cola and lavender aromas are lifted by a peppery nuance. Smooth and supple on the palate, offering gently sweet dark berry and plum flavors, plus a bracing kick of white pepper that provides cut to the back half. The clinging, gently tannic finish leaves sweet dark berry notes behind.

5. 2012 North Valley “Origin” Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton, 750ml Rated 93 by Robert Parker

Full red. Sexy spice- and mineral-accented red fruit and floral pastille scents are tweaked by a touch of blood orange. Sweet and seamless in texture, but with juicy acidity giving spine and lift to the palate-staining black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors. A suave Pinot with no rough edges, finishing with excellent focus and cling.

Viscous in concentration and mouth feel but progressive in respect to character illumination, it has presence and aristocracy but sadly requires many years to develop and emerge. Recommended cellaring for a minimum of 15 years and enjoy for 50.

2. 2006 Torbreck The Descendant Shiraz, Barossa Valley, 750ml Rated 95 by Wine Advocate

The 2006 Descendant is sourced from a single vineyard and co-fermented with 8% Viognier. It was aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it emits an expressive, sexy perfume of violets, wood smoke, black pepper, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Full-bodied, on the palate, this voluptuous effort has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, tons of spicy black fruits, enough ripe tannin to evolve for a decade, and 60-second finish.

3. 2009 Alban Vineyards Reva Estate Syrah, Edna Valley, 750ml Rated 97 by Wine Advocate

Inky purple. Deeply scented, spicy and smoky aromas of ripe cherries and cassis are lifted by notes of black pepper, Indian spices and a dusty herbal quality. Shows impressive depth and vivacity to its blueberry and blackcurrant flavors, which are sharpened by juicy acidity. Supple tannins come on late, adding focus to a sweet, impressively long finish. This sexy syrah is surprisingly approachable but clearly has the material for a positive evolution in the cellar.

4. 2010 Joseph Phelps Vineyards Syrah, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 91 by Stephen Tanzer Good bright medium ruby. Exhilarating, sweet aromas of black raspberry, bacon fat and flowers reminded me of Cote-Rotie.

Then fleshy and savory in the mouth, with lovely concentration to the dark berry and musky truffle flavors. Finishes with a serious spine of tannins but has the stuffing to balance it.

A great achievement for us in that it could easily be confused for a young Barolo or even a Burgundy from the Cote-de-Nuits, but even better than that...it’s from Oregon!

The almost electric violet-ruby colored wine has excellent aromas of marionberry and wild blackberries with some baking spices like cinnamon, vanilla, clove, nutmeg and incense. The attack is pure and driven, with bright fruit flavors and great lithe texture which is focused and mineralbased. The finish has a long juicy acid structure with fine grained tannins. This wine will be amazing after 2-3 years of ageing and will drink well into 2020+ if cellared carefully.

2. 2007 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, 750ml Rated 92 by Wine Spectator

Ripe and fleshy, with rich plum, wild berry, spice and savory herb notes that are complex, full-bodied and expansive on the palate, ending with firm tannins and a dash of espresso.

3. 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 750ml Rated 100 by Wine Advocate

One of the great vintages from this estate...delivers everything you could want from a wine. Full-bodied, intense and beautifully concentrated, with plenty of muscle and depth, it shows the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate, with sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, incense, smoked meats and Asian spices.

4. 2007 Emiliana Coyam, Colchaga Valley, 750ml Rated 90 by Wine Spectator

Coyam is intensely violet-red in color. The nose expresses a harmony of ripe dark fruit, berries, blackcurrant, and forest fruits that delicately intermingle with the oak to deliver soft mineral notes, toffee, and chocolate. The palate offers a pleasing balance of volume and balance, very good body, smooth, well-rounded tannins, and a long finish, showing its character and personality. Recommended for long aging.

A beautiful Bordeaux blend, soft and intricately detailed, with something for everyone. Fruit fans will like the array of blackberries, cherries and raspberries, and oak lovers will appreciate the sweet, caramelized smokiness. The tannins are rich and furry, and the finish lasts for a long time.

The estate’s 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is striking. Freshly cut roses, sweet spices and red cherries wrap around the palate in a sensual wine endowed with superb depth and pedigree. This is one of the more feminine, gracious wines of the year. It will be interesting to see where the 2007 Poggio al Vento goes over the coming decades.

4. 2007 Corte Pavone Brunello di Montalcino, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Enthusiast

Good deep, bright red. Lively aromas and flavors of black cherry, menthol, licorice and fresh herbs. Fairly big, rich and broad, with a slightly medicinal tarry quality and good floral lift. Finishes with chewy, rather pronounced tannins that coat the front teeth.

5. 2009 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany, 750ml Rated 93 by James Suckling

Dark red cherry, smoke, licorice, tobacco, herbs, hard candy and plum notes meld together in Altesino’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino.

The aromas and flavors are all nicely layered in the glass.

wonderful wine and thankfully you get them in abundance here. Dry mineral and brimstone also give the wine a sense of focus, sharpness and cleanliness that is very appealing.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a striking wine that shows uncompromising varietal pureness, albeit in a most concentrated and elaborate form. This is what great Sangiovese is all about. There’s so much happening on the nose and the wine brings you to cherry, spice, licorice, cured meat, pressed rose and grilled meat in equal measure. No one element overpowers the next.

The nose is very balsamic with notes of camphor, hints of mint, leather and hung game wrapped around a core of cherries in liqueur. Together it is balanced, subtle, truly elegant and classical.

6. 2006 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate

The 2006 Prado Enea is a phenomenal bottle of traditional Rioja at its best. The grapes are sourced from higher-altitude terraced plots where the climate is cooler and drier and the soils are rich in clay. This is a wine that is not automatically produced every year. The wine spends its elevage in oak containers of different size, origin and age for no less than three years. The nose is intoxicating with a superb mixture of tertiary and more primary aromas like old furniture, cloves, cracked pepper, incense and cigar ash plus cherries in liqueur (that Garnacha!). The palate is medium-bodied, with great freshness (Jorge Muga tells me the pH is stabilized with aging in barrel), acidity and balance, with a silky texture, ultra-fine tannins and great persistence and length. This wine feels younger than it is, and seems to be aging at a glacial pace.

With the stuffing and balance it has this should make very old bones, and drink greatly throughout its life. Superb!

7. 2 006 Numanthia Toro Termanthia, 750ml Rated 96+ by Wine Advocate

The 2006 Termanthia has a ripe, vivacious bouquet of blackberry, mint, lavender and a hint of iodine/violets that is attractive but takes time to open. The palate is mediumbodied with rounded, supple tannins and crisp acidity. It has a honeyed tincture towards the finish even, though the harvest was actually earlier. This is the most mellifluous of the Termanthia wines, opulent but nicely controlled.

8. 2008 Dominio Pingus, PSI, Ribera del Duero, 750ml 9. 2009 Vega Sicilia Tinto Valbuena 5, Ribera del Duero, 750ml Rated 94 by Robert Parker

Opaque ruby. Spice- and mineral-accented aromas of dark berries, cherry pit and potpourri, with a toasty topnote.

Minerally, incisive and sweet on the palate, offering smoky cherry and blackcurrant flavors complicated by vanilla, mocha and licorice.

Blackberry, cranberry, coffee, toast and herbal notes mingle in this vibrant red. Light, firm tannins and fresh, racy acidity impart balance and drive. Not a big wine, but has focus and depth.

11. 2012 Hacienda Monasterio Ribera del Duero, 750ml Rated 94 by Wine Advocate

There are no traces of the barriques and the nose took me to the Riberas of yesteryear, with some subtle rusticity; it’s ripe without excess and there’s good balance between fruit, spices and perhaps something earthy. The palate is extremely balanced, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, tasty, approachable and long. This could very well be the best crianza ever produced at Monasterio.

I tasted this wine four times from bottle, and it has blown away some tough competition.

A wealth of fruit, power, and balance, amazing purity, and a sumptuous, 65-second finish are the stuff of legends.

Dense ruby/purple-colored with an exquisite perfume of black raspberries, kirsch, ground pepper, and incense, this full-bodied, powerful, concentrated wine reveals fabulous purity as well as a finish that lasts over 45 seconds.

6. 2005 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 95 by Wine Spectator

Vieux Donjon has produced a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2005, and it has the focused, structured feel of the vintage, yet avoids the harsh tannin that’s found in a lot of cuvées.

Exhibiting impressive notes of peppered meats, tapenade, sweet spice, iron and garrigue, with a core of sweet Grenache fruit, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textured on the palate, with superb overall balance.

7. 2007 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 750ml Rated 96+ by Robert Parker

Its deep ruby color is accompanied by a superb nose of nori seaweed wrappers, licorice, pepper, tobacco leaf, and gobs of sweet black cherry and black currant fruit.

8. 2009 Delas Frères Côte-Rôtie Seigneur de Maugiron, 750ml Rated 93 by Robert Parker The 2009 Cote Rotie Seigneur de Maugiron exhibits lots of spice, raspberry, cassis, licorice, incense, Christmas fruitcake and fried bacon notes. The smokiness, seductiveness, lusciousness and medium to full-bodied, round, generous texture make for an endearing, sexy Cote Rotie to enjoy over the next 10-15 years. There is not much of the Cote Rotie La Landonne (approximately 500 cases produced), but it ranks alongside the great La Landonnes made by Marcel and Philippe Guigal.

9. 2010 Delas Frères Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate A wine of great intensity, it possesses an inky/purple color, plenty of creme de cassis, licorice, lead pencil shavings, camphor, flint and barbecue smoke characteristics.

10. 2010 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Spectator

This takes a decidedly old-school approach with its very distinctive bay leaf and juniper notes leading the way, along with roasted mesquite and alder wood. The core of steeped black currant, roasted plum and blackberry fruit waits in reserve while the long, ganache- and tar-filled finish has nice rugged grip, with a peppery echo. Should cellar wonderfully.

11. 2012 Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone, 750ml Rated 96 by Robert Parker

Opaque ruby. Potent, mineral-laced raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suave floral and spice qualities, picking up white pepper and cola accents with air. Seamless, round and sweet on the palate, offering intense red berry preserve and floral pastille flavors with a touch of allspice.

Finishes sappy and precise, with velvety tannins and a late jolt of cherry compote.

Good full ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines dark fruits, dried herbs, violet and forest floor spices. Explosively sweet and deep, with a spicy core of dark fruit flavors that fans out on the back half to saturate the palate. Finishes with strong but lush tannins and captivating violet lift. Remarkably horizontal for a cabernet-based wine from this vintage.

5. 2009 Anakota Helena Montana Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Knights Valley, 750ml Rated 95 by Robert Parker

This 2009 is built like an old style Bordeaux with lots of red and black fruits, graphite and noticeable oak.

6. 2009 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, Napa Valley, 750ml Rated 96 by Wine Advocate

The 2009 is all about promise and potential. The wine possesses stunning depth and concentration, with fabulous balance and tons of personality. The only thing it needs is time. This dark, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon is a lot to look forward to. The 2009 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petite Verdot and 10% Malbec. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.

Good full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Compellingly sweet and densely packed, with lovely vinosity giving shape to the flavors of dark berries, cedar and minerals.

2. 2002 Silver Oak Cabernet Alexander Valley, 750ml Rated 93 by Wine Advocate

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is richer and fuller bodied than the 2001, with a more muscular structural overlay. Less evolved and not displaying the pungent, spicy notes of the 2001, it offers loads of new oak, cassis, dried herb, chocolate, and fruitcake notes. Give it another 1-2 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 10-14 years.

The 2009 Red Blend emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, mint, spices, minerals and pure, crystalline, dark red fruit. This is a gorgeous wine endowed with remarkable finesse. The style is weightless, elegant and totally refined.

8. 2009 Shafer Relentless, 750ml Rated 93+ by Robert Parker

The 2009 Relentless (Syrah/Petite Sirah) wraps around the palate with serious depth. Dark cherries, grilled herbs and menthol take shape in the glass followed by sweet floral notes that add lift on the finish. A rich, round and voluptuous wine, the 2009 impresses for its overall sense of harmony. It isn’t terribly varietal, but is quite pretty if taken on its own terms.

The 2009 is 82% Syrah and 18% Petite Sirah. Personally, I prefer the subsequent vintages, where Syrah plays more of a leading role. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
