BEAT A PATH

Discover nature’s beauty in the midst of town.

Mornings are magic in the valley. The mist rises from the water, blurring the tree-lined Sammamish River Trail like a Monet painting. Overhead, geese form their wedge, and a lone eagle perches on a tree top. You can hear a rooster crowing in the distance. As the sky clears, Mount Rainier appears in the distance, beyond the green sea of farmland. Picture. Postcard. Perfect. With such natural beauty, you might think you’re in the Cascade Foothills or the Columbia Valley. Lucky you; you’re in Woodinville. by Lisa Purdy Richard Duval Images

This trail is not a secret to those who live here. Morning commuters cycle to work, parents jog along with strollers, and dogs walk their owners. The trail, not quite 11 miles long and running between our neighbors, Redmond and Bothell, is the center part of the Seattle area’s “locks-to-lake” corridor. Once an important transportation point for Woodinville’s logging industry, it is now home to outdoor enthusiasts, woodland creatures and a variety of birds and water fowl. Exploring the trail is a great way to start your day before the wineries open and your wine tasting adventure begins. You can access it in the Hollywood District, just east of Willow’s Lodge on N.E. 145th Street, or from the Downtown District via Wilmot Gateway Park on 131st Avenue N.E. Simply strolling along the river with a morning coffee is a great way to experience its natural wonders. More cardio? Rent a bike or a canoe/kayak or grab a pair of skates. Go 10 minutes or 10 miles; it’s up to you.

Want to get your heart pumping a bit more? No problem! Trek across the valley on the connecting Tolt Pipeline Trail, where you can catch a spectacular view of the valley’s farmland, and get a good workout climbing up the hill. Once there, catch your breath and look across the valley. You’ll know why ‘farm to forest’ is a Woodinville theme. Too much exercise? That’s all right. Raise your BPM by taking a hot air balloon ride above the valley instead. Just like the many varietals of wine you’ll taste as you explore Woodinville Wine Country, there are many ways to check out the valley. Whichever you choose, enjoy! Richard Duval Images

Now for the surprise: those same conditions have made Washington the largest grower of hops in the world, producing over 73 percent of the nation’s output. Which makes this not only wine country, but beer country. EMERGING ART SCENE Where to see Woodinville’s many art displays.

Take a drive through Woodinville’s Districts and spot public artworks everywhere. Pop in to a tasting room and find local, original art donning the walls as well as the wine labels. Visit the parks and discover colorful peace poles and murals. From the center of town to its edge, Woodinville celebrates and embraces visual art. Since the City’s formal public art program began in 2002, its art scene has quietly grown into the thriving hub of artistic activity it is today. Fine arts abound in Woodinville’s businesses and public spaces. Its success is a collaboration of both private and public efforts. You can see art everywhere – if you know where to look.

A BIG SPLASH OF COLOR Outdoor murals welcome visitors to Woodinville. At the entrance to the City, you’ll find dual murals, designed by Will Schlough and painted by community volunteers, under the railroad trestle. The twin murals, entitled Bales and Ales, commemorate the City’s past. Look over to your left and you’ll catch the unofficial Welcome to Woodinville mural on the corner of the Carol Edwards Center. Turn right on NE 175th Street and you’ll pass over the Sammamish River Bridge trestle. Underneath, the Sammamish River Trail underpass is home to colorful mural displays of life on the trail. In the heart of the Downtown District are DeYoung Park and its collection of peace poles. Painted by local artists, the 20 poles are wrapped with vibrant scenes denoting Woodinville’s commitment to “a culture of peace.” Another pole stands tall at City Hall, and others are planned for installation throughout town.

CRAFT COCKTAILS When the spirits move you. by Lisa Purdy

Sometimes, only a good muddle will do. After a long day, as a prelude to dinner, or to warm up a late night —there’s just something about a well-made cocktail that renders every other drink an also-ran. Naturally, fine wine and frothy microbrews get most of the attention in this valley of adult beverages, but when the sun gets low and appetites beckon, Woodinville’s bars and restaurants become the focus, muddling and mixing novel twists on the

Some people new to wine tasting feel embarrassed about asking “silly” questions, but there really are no silly questions. The tasting room staff is here to help, and we love talking about wine.” — Kevin Steffanson, Basel Cellars “Ask away. Ask all your questions. We want you to learn about our wine.” —Rochelle Shawver, Rocky Pond Winery “How do you know if the wine you are tasting is a good wine? If you like it! At the end of the day, we are sipping wine and it should be fun and stress free. If you like it, then it doesn’t matter if it has scored 99 pts or you’ve never heard of it before. So just relax and enjoy! If you want to dig a little deeper and start identifying aromas and flavors in wine, then start big and work it from there. Tonnemaker Valley Farm, www.tonnemaker.com, a fourth-generation organic farm, produces nearly 150 varieties of vegetables, herbs, squash and flowers, offering each week’s harvest at their Woodinville farm stand and at farmer’s markets throughout Seattle and the Eastside.

A FRESH SPIN At the table end of all this farm freshness are Woodinville chefs like Danilo Amato of PicNic Table and Chris Weber of The Herbfarm. Born and raised in the farm and restaurant culture of Tuscan Italy, Amato brings an Old World simplicity and tradition to his cooking that dovetails perfectly with the growing availability of local produce and herbs. In building his Mediterranean menu around what’s ripe and ready for picking, he changes his selection of appetizer, lunch, and entrée offerings every week, accommodating the season and harvest to capture fresh flavors at their peak.

“I think that’s what I like most about living and eating in northern climates: the appreciation for what’s in season.” As their name suggests, The Herbfarm takes farm-to-table dining to its ultimate conclusion with its own 3.5-acre farm dedicated solely to this premier practitioner of local cuisine. With an abundant garden right outside his kitchen door, chef Chris Weber can finalize each day’s menu just hours before the evening’s meal. “I think that’s what I like most about living and eating in northern climates: the appreciation for what’s in season,” he says. That same appreciation motivates Woodinville’s entire food and wine community—from those who till the soil to those who prepare its bounty. No matter what time of year, the fresh flavors and experiences served up by these farms, markets and chefs have a unique way of turning everyone who visits into a proud and passionate local.

FAMILY FUN So much to do for the whole family by Lisa Purdy

quiet, woodland trails, complete with a fun Story Trail for kids.

Consider options like Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia or Matthews that have great outdoor areas for kids to roam, Two Vintners with its large indoor play room to keep you and your kids happy or breweries like Triplehorn with toys and games.

That’s cool… For something different, take the kids trout fishing at Gold Creek Trout Farm. If you planned in advance, you can also take horseback riding lessons at Gold Creek Stables.

Fresh air and fun… Wilmot Gateway Park has a children’s playground and a large grassy area perfect for frisbee tossing or running around. At nearby Woodin Creek Park, you’ll find a half basketball court and a tennis court. Both parks have picnic areas and access to the Sammamish River Trail.

Woodinville is a family-friendly town, voted one of the top places in Washington to raise a family. Activities for kids abound.

Rotary Community Park also has a great playground and access

to nature trails. Its main draw is its skate/BMX park and the

Quiet time… Your little ones can enjoy story time at either the Woodinville Library or the Barnes and Noble Bookstore. Or the whole family can take in a movie at the AMC Theatre.

Fuel up… Restaurants in Woodinville tend to be casual and family friendly so satisfying kids’ appetites is easy. You’ll find lots of fast food options in the Downtown District for your hungry munchkins. Additionally, Pizza Coop has a play area, and Red Robin, Woodinville Café and Teddy’s Big Burger are always popular.

PLAN AN EVENT Celebrate in Woodinville

The greatest benefit of having nearly 120 great wineries in one community becomes obvious the moment you raise a glass: the variety of tasting experiences is nearly endless. And that critical mass attracts so many others tastes, like chefs, restaurants and cuisines to pair with all that amazing wine. But such an abundance of wineries nestled in a beautiful valley give Woodinville another major attraction that’s sometimes overlooked: a vast variety of event spaces for nearly every occasion. Just as there’s always wine pouring here, there’s almost always a celebration, function or meetup taking place. It’s rare that such a diversity of venues, rooms and experiences abound in such a small area, but there’s just something about wine country that naturally attracts and accommodates gettogethers of all kinds. From cozy, boutique tasting rooms that can host a dozen people, to larger chateaus, wineries, and destination hotels that accommodate several hundred, the variety of spaces here make ideal settings for weddings, corporate events, private parties and milestone occasions of every variety.

Need Inspiration? If you’re planning a wedding, be sure to check out www.weddingsinwoodinville.com and catch the tour of amazing wedding venues on the last Sunday in January. Favorite spots for weddings are Willows Lodge, the Woodinville Lavender Farm, JM Cellars and Chateau Lill where the scenic Sammamish River Valley provides a gorgeous backdrop for the special day.

Woodinville is also ideal for corporate gatherings of all kinds. You can tour premier event venues with Experience Corporate Woodinville, www. corporatewoodinville.com, where you’ll learn about all the options available for your next event. Prefer to manage your own party? The Sammamish Valley Grange, www.sammamishvalleygrange.org, is a popular option.

A bottle of wine and a great place to drink it have a magical way of turning any get-together into a special occasion. Little wonder then that Woodinville has become known for much more than creating exceptional wines. It’s just as popular for making memories.
