Discover The Ground to Glass Experience, where Napa Valley’s landscapes, wines, and cuisine come to life in one unforgettable day. Reserve your place and experience it for yourself.
Some Napa Valley experiences are about checking wineries off a list. Others are about collecting reservations. The Ground to Glass Experience invites guests to do something different. Slow down, settle in, and enjoy Napa Valley as it was meant to be experienced.
Created by Priest Ranch, this curated journey connects three distinctive destinations into one seamless day. From the relaxing vibes of Yountville to the rolling vineyards of Somerston Estate, guests are immersed in the people, places, and flavors that define Napa Valley. Every detail has been carefully arranged, including a private driver, so the only thing left to do is enjoy the day.
The day begins in Yountville, the heart of Napa Valley, at Priest Ranch, where small-production blends and classic varietals reflect the remarkable diversity of their source, Somerston Estate. While here, guests can choose between two signature tasting experiences. The Bacon & Wine Experience explores the surprising harmony between expertly prepared pork belly and four Priest Ranch handcrafted wines, while Taste the Terroir offers a one-of-a-kind sensory adventure that reveals how Napa Valley’s soils influence every bottle through hand-selected wines paired with artisan chocolates. Both experiences celebrate the belief that wine is meant to be shared around the table and enjoyed with food, conversation, and curiosity.
To complement the tasting, guests are then invited to relax over a selection of cheese and charcuterie before strolling next door to The Kitchen at Priest Ranch (KPR), Yountville’s only rooftop dining destination.
You’ll be treated to the Chef’s Pick lunch, showcasing the culinary team’s creativity through a casually elevated menu inspired by local cuisine. Whether you choose to eat under sunny skies on the rooftop or in the comfort of the dining room, it’s a meal designed to be slowly savored alongside Priest Ranch wines, such as their red blend, Peacemaker, and the crisp, fresh Grenache Blanc. Lunch at KPR is always highlighted by seasonal ingredients and bold flavors.
Then, after lunch, the journey heads to a majestic part of Napa Valley. Rather than driving winding back roads or arranging your next reservation, guests settle into the comfort

of a private vehicle and leave the logistics to their driver. The scenic drive into Napa Valley’s eastern hills becomes part of the experience itself, climbing through vineyards, around Lake Hennessey, and through Northern California’s natural landscape toward the secluded beauty of Somerston Estate.
Spanning nearly 1,700 acres, Somerston Estate remains one of Napa Valley’s secrets. With just a fraction of its land dedicated to vineyards, the Estate is an outstanding blend of rugged beauty, carefully stewarded farmland, and worldclass winemaking. Sweeping vistas, dramatic elevations, and an unmistakable sense of place create an experience few visitors ever have the opportunity to enjoy.
While at the Estate, guests will enjoy an Estate Tour & Tasting that offers an up-close perspective on the vineyards, the land, and the philosophy behind each wine. Accompanied by a wine specialist, guests explore the property on an all-terrain vehicle before settling in for a guided tasting of limitedproduction Priest Ranch and Somerston wines, thoughtfully paired with elevated cuisine crafted by Estate Chef Cameron Bouldin. Each pairing is designed to showcase the harmony between the wines and the seasonal flavors. This immersive experience brings to life the Estate’s commitment to land stewardship and minimally invasive winemaking — leaving guests with a lasting sense of connection to both the place and its people.
The Ground to Glass Experience is more than a tasting itinerary. It is an invitation for experiencing Napa Valley in its fullest expression from vineyard to table, from the quaint town of Yountville to the tranquil solitude of the Estate, and from the first pour to the last toast.
When visiting wine country, the most memorable days aren’t measured by how many wineries you visit, but by the stories you bring home, the people you meet, and the moments experienced around the table.
Next time you’re planning your visit, get in touch at visit@priestranchwines.com or call (707) 944-8200 to book

This isn’t the “typical” story of a grape grower or winemaker. In fact, it’s a story of a young boy growing up in Virginia and, as a 12-year-old in the late 1940s, drove a mule wagon through the family tobacco fields. Along with his grandmother and other family members, they would cure the tobacco, and Ken Laird simply fell in love with the dirt, the seasons, and farming.
There was never any thought of growing wine grapes, making wine, or anything related to wine. In Ken’s mind, there was always the thought of owning his own plot of dirt one day and continuing the family farming tradition, because farming, anything, was what Ken Laird really loved.
Ken traveled from the tobacco fields of Virginia to Georgia Tech (with the love of his life, Gail, whom he met in high school) to study mechanical engineering. After graduating, his work took him to New York, Philadelphia, and California, and finally to the City by the Bay and the Napa Valley, where he felt he could reconnect with his farming and agricultural roots.
Ken studied mechanical engineering and described himself as a “big city mechanical engineer,” moving to San Francisco’s East Bay to pursue his career. Because the East Bay is close to the Napa Valley, Ken and his wife, Gail, would take road trips to the area, as the thought of “transitioning back” to his agricultural roots was never far from his mind.
In 1970, after many trips to Napa Valley, Ken and Gail focused on a 70-acre prune orchard in Calistoga that they fell in love with and wanted to purchase, with plans to remove the

orchards and plant wine grapes. There was one problem, however: they couldn’t get a loan.
After being turned down by bank after bank, Ken took a “shot in the dark” and began cold-calling people to help finance his operation. One of those people was Mr. Robert Mondavi, who took Ken’s call, met with him, and not only guaranteed the bank loan but also gave Ken a contract to purchase grapes for twenty years. One can only assume that Mr. Mondavi saw and felt Ken’s passion for farming, for preserving the land, and for growing great wine grapes, and that it matched his own passion and vision. Mr. Mondavi was not wrong about Ken or about what the Laird’s future would be.
Perhaps it was serendipity or karma that brought Mr. Mondavi and Ken Laird together, but whatever it was, Ken’s love of and innate connection to agriculture, farming, and dirt proved successful. Ken would start buying parcels and rip out whatever was growing there to start from scratch, his way, the right way. This was more than a career for Ken and Gail; it was their passion project, one that returned him to his roots, back to the days when he would drive a mule cart through

the tobacco fields to cure the tobacco and sell it so a finished product could be made. The same was true of grapes.
As the vines took root, the grapes grew, and Laird continued to acquire acreage, the reputation of Laird’s fruit grew. Ken began selling fruit to many of the valley’s most respected wineries, including Cakebread, Duckhorn, Far Niente, Joseph Phelps, and Merryvale.
About thirty years after his original purchase, Ken Laird decided it was time to use some of his elite grapes for his own label, and in 1999, he hired Paul Hobbs as winemaker. Hobbs set the winemaking style, turning over the reins in 2015. By then, Laird not only had a reputation for growing the finest grapes but also for producing quality wine. In 2015, Brian Mox took over the winemaking position, continuing the focus on producing low-intervention wines that reflect the grape and terroir from which they are grown.
A tasting experience at Laird is a truly unique, one-of-a-kind adventure. Sitting on the deck, overlooking just a part of what has grown into Laird Family Winery’s 2,000 planted acres, is mesmerizing. With a pastoral view of the vineyards
and hearing the story of Laird Family Estate Vineyards, may well transport you back to a different time, but it also illustrates how the small family farmer is integral to American agriculture and wine. Whether sitting on the expansive deck or inside, you will experience a wide variety of wines that reflect the terroir of “the” Napa Valley. With about 40 separate vineyards, Laird has the advantage of selecting grapes for their wines from areas best suited to each variety, showcasing the best of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Bordeaux varietis, Sauvignon Blanc, Primitivo, Syrah, and more, including an enticing variety of sparkling wines.
The wines are elegant and expressive, reflecting the hills, valleys, and dirt of Napa Valley and surrounding areas, shaped by warm weather, mountain and valley-floor fruit, and coastal influences. Choose from a variety of tastings, each reflecting not only the specific terroir and climate but also the history and passion of Ken Laird, the farmer with a vision, and a family committed to showcasing what the soil can produce and the story it can tell.

Today, Laird Family Estate remains exactly what its name suggests — a true family enterprise. More than five decades after Ken and Gail planted their first vineyard, both remain actively involved with Laird Family Estate and Bayview Vineyards, the grapegrowing business they founded in 1970.
The next generation has embraced the same commitment to quality and stewardship. Daughter Rebecca serves as General Manager of Laird Family Estate, overseeing the winery’s custom crush facility, tasting room, national sales, and bulk wine sales. Son, Justin is president of Bayview Vineyards*, directing the family’s vineyard management company and contracting premium fruit to many of Napa Valley’s leading vintners.
Their leadership ensures that Ken and Gail’s original vision continues to thrive, combining generations of farming knowledge with a forward-looking approach that keeps the family deeply connected to the vineyards, the wines, and the land that inspired it all. *Serves as a custom crush facility for over 40 brands.

Guests are invited to the inaugural Laird Lobster Boil onAugust 22 at Sunrise Ranch Winery, where the golden light of a Napa Valley summer evening sets the stage for an unforgettable celebration. The event brings together the simple pleasures of fresh lobster, exceptional Laird wines, and warm hospitality in a picturesque vineyard setting. Whether gathering with longtime friends or meeting new ones among the vines, attendees will raise a glass to summer, savor the bounty of sea and land, and create lasting memories beneath the glow of a spectacular Napa Valley sunset.
When you visit Laird Family Estate, you will leave with a smile after tasting the wines, enjoying the pastoral views, and learning about how a man and his wife turned a vision and passion into a dream come true.

Where world-class cuisine, exceptional wines, and genuine hospitality meet in the heart of Calfiornia’s most underrated wine region. • •

There are restaurants that serve dinner, and there are restaurants that create memories.
Nestled among the vineyards and rolling hills of Kelseyville, Harmony has become one of Northern California’s most distinctive dining destinations. Centered around a single communal table, the intimate experience offers guests something increasingly rare: a true sense of discovery.
Founded by hospitality veteran Mara Mehlman and European Michelin Star–trained Chef Jevgenija Saromova, Harmony reflects decades of dedication to exceptional food, wine, and hospitality. Before moving to California, the couple operated an acclaimed destination restaurant in Vermont recognized by Forbes as one of the nation’s “10 Best Restaurants.”
Each evening begins with a welcome glass of sparkling wine in Harmony’s cellar before guests settle in for a seven-course tasting menu. Every dish is
thoughtfully paired with wine, creating a dining experience over several hours.
“I want every course to create a sense of curiosity,” says Saromova. “A guest may recognize an ingredient, but I want them to experience it in a completely new way.”
That philosophy guides the menu. Ingredients are harvested from Harmony’s micro-farm and orchard, sourced from local growers, and supplemented with carefully selected products from artisan producers around the world. Familiar flavors are transformed through creativity, technique, and meticulous attention to detail.
The wine program is equally thoughtful. Alongside acclaimed wines from renowned regions, Harmony highlights the exceptional wines of Lake County.
“Many visitors are surprised by what they discover here,” says Mehlman.
“Lake County has extraordinary vineyards, passionate winemakers,

and a sense of authenticity that can be difficult to find elsewhere.”
The result is more than a meal—it is an exploration of flavor, craftsmanship, and place. Every detail is designed to encourage guests to slow down, engage their senses, and savor the experience.
For travelers seeking something beyond the expected, Harmony may be one of wine country’s most rewarding discoveries.

Some wineries are built on land. Others are built on a dream. The story of Gloria Ferrer begins with both.
When José Ferrer set out to establish a winery in Sonoma Carneros, he was fulfilling a vision that had started generations earlier. His father believed that the cool-climate vineyards of Carneros held the potential to produce worldclass sparkling wine, and José was determined to bring that dream to life. But when the time came to name the winery, he made a deeply personal decision.
Rather than naming it after himself or his family, he named it after the woman who stood beside him through it all — his wife, Gloria.
It was a gesture of love, respect, and gratitude. Gloria was his partner in every sense of the word: a trusted confidante, the mother of their children, an adventurer, and a constant source of strength and support. The winery became not only the realization of a family dream, but also a lasting tribute to the woman who helped make it possible.
Nearly four decades later, visitors still see Gloria’s name on every bottle, but the meaning behind that name has become even more important to us.
Today, Gloria Ferrer is guided by a simple vision: For Her. At its heart, For Her is a reflection of the very reason the winery was named Gloria Ferrer in the first place. It celebrates the people who inspire us, support us, challenge us, and help us become our best selves. It is a recognition that behind every great achievement, there is often someone whose influence quietly shaped the journey.
For us, that person was Gloria.
The vision honors her story while inviting others to reflect on the people who have played that role in their own lives. The mentor who believed in them. The friend who showed up when it mattered. The partner who stood beside them through every challenge and triumph.
Wine has always been part of life’s celebrations, but it is rarely the reason we gather. We gather for the people around the table. We raise a glass to milestones, memories, friendships, and love. Those moments—and the people who create them— are what For Her is truly about.
That perspective continues to influence everything we do. It shapes how we welcome guests to our estate, how we tell our story, and how we approach innovation in the cellar. From traditional sparkling wines that honor our heritage to new creations inspired by the natural beauty of Sonoma, we remain committed to crafting wines that bring people together and create meaningful experiences.
The wildflowers that bloom across our estate each spring have become one symbol of that philosophy. Beautiful, resilient, and ever-changing, they serve as a reminder that growth and tradition can coexist. Much like the winery itself, they are rooted in history while constantly looking toward the future.
In many ways, the story of Gloria Ferrer has never really been about a winery.
It is a story about family. It is a story about honoring those who inspire us. And above all, it is a story about a husband who chose to celebrate his wife in the most enduring way he knew how — by placing her name on a dream and sharing it with the world.
Today, that inspiration continues to guide us.
For Her. Not simply as a name, but as a reminder of the people who make every moment worth celebrating.
GLORIA FERRER

Alexander Valley comes alive each September as vineyards buzz with harvest activity, grapes arrive at the crush pad, and winemakers begin transforming another vintage into wine. It's a fleeting season that most visitors rarely experience firsthand. During Alexander Valley Wine Week, however, guests are invited beyond the tasting room to discover the people, places, and traditions that define one of Sonoma County’s most celebrated wine regions.
Returning September 21-27, the weeklong celebration builds on the success of its inaugural year, expanding with more participating wineries, exclusive experiences, and intimate opportunities to explore the valley’s agricultural heritage. Evolving from the longtime Taste Alexander Valley event, the reimagined format encourages visitors to slow down, stay awhile, and immerse themselves in harvest season alongside the families who have farmed this remarkable landscape for generations.
Rather than focusing solely on wine tasting, Wine Week showcases the working vineyards, ranches, and wineries that shape Alexander Valley. Guests can ride through historic vineyards aboard tractor tours, hike among the vines at the height of harvest, descend into cool underground caves, blend wines alongside experienced winemakers, bottle their own creations, enjoy vineyard picnics, and even take part in lively grape stomps. It's an invitation to see the valley through the eyes of those who live and work here every day.
Each participating winery has designed an experience reflecting its own history and connection to the land. Robert Young Estate Winery offers a vineyard tractor tour
and picnic with fifth-generation grower Robert Young II, sharing stories of one of Alexander Valley's pioneering farming families. Alexander Valley Vineyards welcomes guests underground for immersive cave tours and tastings, while J. Rickards Winery provides hands-on blending and bottling sessions. Silver Oak opens its vineyards and winery for guided tours, Trione Vineyards & Winery celebrates harvest with grape stomps and seasonal festivities, Stuhlmuller Vineyards pairs scenic vineyard hikes with artisan picnics, and Mercury Wine in Geyserville adds a playful twist with an interactive wine blending competition.
Additional experiences are hosted by Bedarra Vineyards, Lampson Family Wines, and La Cienega Vineyard, giving visitors a rare opportunity to explore boutique properties that reflect the diversity and character of Alexander Valley.
The celebration also reflects the Alexander Valley Winegrowers' enduring philosophy: We Are Farmers. Behind every bottle is a community of growers whose lives revolve around the seasons, the soil, and the vines. Wine Week offers an uncommon opportunity to share in that story — not as a spectator, but as a welcomed guest.
Many experiences are intentionally small, allowing meaningful conversations with growers and winemakers while preserving the intimate atmosphere that makes Alexander Valley so special. Advance reservations are highly recommended, as many events sell out quickly during harvest. For a complete schedule and reservations, visit alexandervalley.org.

In May of 1976, California wine arrived with a resounding impact on the world stage. Ten California wineries participated in a blind tasting contest along with some of the most prestigious labels from France. The tasting was organized by wine merchant, Steven Spurrier and wine educator, Patricia Gallagher. Stunningly, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay beat out a field of top Burgundies, along with entries from Chalone, Spring Mountain, Freemark Abbey, Veedercrest and David Bruce, to take Top Chardonnay. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars bested its peers, Ridge, Heitz Cellar and Freemark Abbey, along with its French counterparts, to be declared Top Cabernet Sauvignon. California had arrived.
Each of the California participants were buoyed by the news of the results. Each winery would be forever altered by the event, as would the interest in California wines and the trajectory of its subsequent growth.

Fifty years after the tasting that stunned the wine world, the pioneering wineries behind the Judgment of Paris reflect on the competition that forever changed California wine — and the legacy that continues to shape every vintage today.
BY LAURA NESS
Half a century after California’s improbable triumph over France, the wineries that made history are still defining excellence. This final installment tells more stories of how one blind tasting transformed Napa and Sonoma from regional wine producers into internationally respected icons.
Founded in 1972, by French-American businessman John Goelet and his wife, Henrietta Goelet , Clos du Val is the result of a two-year search across four continents, looking for the best area in the world to grow and make Bordeaux varietals. Goelet had put French-born winemaker, Bernard Portet , in charge of this quest. He finally discovered it in the Stags Leap district, where the famed Hirondelle Vineyard was planted into the noble Bordeaux grapes. Three generations of the Goelet family later, this vineyard, set in a valley within the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, is still being farmed with low intervention and the long-term in mind. The winery’s very first release — the 1972 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon — was selected as one of only six California Cabernets to participate in the 1976 Judgment of Paris, and placed 8th overall.

• Part 2 – Where are They Now?
• Part 3 – Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Available in the May, June, and July issues at winecountrythisweek.com/magazines.
In the 1986 rematch, an antidote to French skepticism that New World wines were not ageworthy, Clos du Val’s 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon ultimately secured first place overall. In the hands of winemaker Carmel Greenberg, the winery’s emphasis on blending to create elegance and balance, Clos du Val remains a family-owned estate under third-generation owner Olav Goelet. The winery’s famed sauvignon blancs have been said to evoke those of Pessac-Léognan.
Book a legacy tasting at the Hirondelle House, where a curated selection of cellar treasures showcase their beautifully aged library wines.
The Clos du Val Harvest Farmers Market, with wine, food, and local vendors, will be held, Sunday, October 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $125.

In the original 1976 event, the 1971 vintage of Ridge Monte Bello came in fifth place. It might not have been even close to ready, according to winemaker Paul Draper, but it still showed well enough. Thirty years later, during the 2006 Judgment of Paris re-enactment, the original vintages were retasted, and the 1971 Monte Bello won by a landslide in the Cabernet category, beating the closest wine by 18 points.
Marketing Director, Ryan Johnson, shared a story that distills one collector’s experience with the Judgment of Paris and his love of wine. It’s a fascinating story that, in many ways, takes away the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Judgment of Paris and gets to what it is really about: an appreciation for some of the world’s great wines and enjoying them with people.

Dr. Robert Wilson, a dedicated wine collector whose appreciation for wine history and the magic of aged wine inspired him to create his own Judgment of Paris tasting. Over more than a decade, Wilson patiently assembled the original wines from the historic competition, tracking down rare bottles through auctions and private sales with no agenda beyond curiosity, passion, and a desire to experience a legendary moment in wine history for himself.
The result was an intimate blind tasting shared with family and friends. Complete with the original 20-point scoring system, historic context, and the suspense that made the 1976 tasting famous, Wilson’s recreation offered something increasingly rare in today’s wine world: a chance to experience history not as an industry insider, but as an enthusiastic and knowledgeable wine lover.
Arguably, taking last place in the Chardonnay category wasn’t the biggest of feathers, but it was still a feather. The entry might have been accidental, says Winemaker Mitri Faravashi. “That wine, the 1973 Chardonnay was botrytized and was intended as a dessert wine, so the judges didn’t know what to make of it!” postulates Faravashi.
English wine merchant, Steven Spurrier, who organized the famed tasting, flew to San Francisco with his wife to collect wines from the labels they felt best represented the pinnacle of California wine production at the time.
“They first went to Ridge, and then came to David Bruce,” says Faravashi. Apparently, they were intrigued by the dessert wine and bought that along with other David Bruce wines, then driving down to Chalone to collect the 1974 Chardonnay that would take 4th place.
David Bruce Winery, begun in 1964, had already garnered notoriety, but this drove traffic, bolstering the young brand to go well beyond its initial estatebased ambitions. As the winery grew, they added Santa Cruz Mountains vineyards, as well as ones from the Santa Lucia Highlands, San Benito and

While a select group of wineries took center stage in that fateful blind tasting, many others were deeply connected to the moment.

Sonoma counties. Dr. David, as he was fondly known, began making wines that were lean and French-like, but gradually moved toward a riper, more California style. Faravashi says the doctor often picked at 25 to 26 degrees Brix … a bit higher than average. As the climate warms, Faravashi has begun picking the estate fruit at 20 Brix instead of 24+, and is also reducing the time in oak. The result is quite dramatic.
In honor of the JOP 50th anniversary, the 2023 David Bruce Estate Chardonnay moves toward a leaner, lower alcohol style. A fitting tribute to the earlier style of David Bruce wines, the 2023 Estate Anniversary Chardonnay shows precision, linearity and purity, concentrating on fruit freshness.

Ron Fenolio of Veedercrest has a slightly different take on the whole JOP kerfluffle. “You have to remember that the wine industry, like everything else, was dramatically impacted by the events of the time. First, there was phylloxera in the 19th century, followed by World War I and II, plus the great Depression and Prohibition.” He says it’s a wonder that the industry survived all of that. There was an uptick in planting and production after the end of WWII when servicemen returned from Europe with an appreciation of wine, but then the Korean War happened, creating a temporary setback. Same for the Vietnam war.
Luxury was not top of mind. Venture capital was scarce. “For an entire 50-year period, there were no new wineries in California, or America,” says Fenolio. “In fact, 2500 wineries went out of business.”
But, by the time of the Judgment, things were on a more even keel. By 1970, there were 39 wineries in Napa. By 1989, there were 650, says Fenolio, including Veedercrest, which he co-founded in 1972. People were turning to the extracurricular pleasures of life. The wine press had begun covering California wines and consumers and collectors began paying attention to what was coming out of the Golden State as much as from Europe.
“The time was right for California wine and the perfect storm occurred,” says Fenolio. He credits the influence of European winemakers like Andre Tchelistcheff and Mike Grgich for the wins in both the red and white categories. And it was no fluke. “The wineries that participated are all still going strong today,” says Fenolio.
Veedercrest just released a 50th anniversary edition of the 1972 Chardonnay. “It’s a very French style that most Americans don’t really understand,” says Fenolio. “But it’s why the French praised it at the time for being the most French-like of the California entries.”

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars will be the setting for an immersive JOP 50th tasting with eight Napa Valley wineries taking place on October 11, 2026. During one of the two timeslots, you can experience the wines of these participants and winners in a “walkaround” style tasting. Reservations and more information are available at stagsleapwinecellars.com.

On September 8, Napa Valley will once again take center stage in the global conversation about fine wine as Judgment of Napa and Sonoma vs. France brings together acclaimed judges, celebrated wineries, and wine enthusiasts for a historic blind tasting competition at La Toque. Presented by VENÜ Magazine, the event will revisit one of the most influential moments in wine history — the 1976 Judgment of Paris — while also exploring how today’s wines from Napa and Sonoma compare with their legendary French counterparts.
The afternoon tasting will feature four carefully curated panels designed to showcase the evolution of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon over the past 50 years. Beginning with a look back at the original 1976 Paris Tasting categories, judges will blind taste Chardonnays from Napa and Sonoma against Burgundies, followed by Cabernet Sauvignons from California compared with Bordeaux selections. Later sessions will turn toward current and near-current releases, examining how modern winemaking continues to shape the future of these iconic wine regions.
The competition will be overseen by a distinguished panel of wine experts, including winemakers, sommeliers, journalists, and educators. Judges include Sally Johnson Blum, former winemaker for Pride Mountain and Robert Mondavi; Jean-Charles Boisset , owner of numerous premium wineries in France and the United States; La Toque chef and owner Ken Frank ; Jeff Morgan, founder and winemaker of Covenant Winery; Sara Preiser, longtime wine journalist and owner of Shadowbox Cellars; Shelly Rafanelli-Fehlman of A. Rafanelli Winery; Chris Sawyer, internationally recognized sommelier and wine educator; and Deborah Parker Wong , editor of the Slow Wine Guide USA and The Somm Journal
Curated by Master Sommelier Virginia Philip, journalist Monty Preiser, and winemaker Justin Preiser, the selections will be presented without outside influence, allowing the judges to evaluate each wine purely on quality, character, and expression of place.
Katie Hamilton Shaffer, owner of Rotation, is excited to present dinner and wines consisting of dishes with both French and American heritages. The cost will be $115 all inclusive. On August 15th reservations will open for a second winery representative if room allows, and then on August 25th unreserved seats will be available to the public at rotationnapa.com. After dinner, the scores and winners from the competition will be revealed, and the judges will be available for about an hour to discuss their thoughts and experiences.
With support from sponsors including Wine Country This Month, Scarlett Law Firm, Ramey & Hailey Law Firm, Rotation by Feast It Forward, and Fred Bollaci Enterprises, “Judgment of Napa and Sonoma vs. France” promises to be a memorable milestone in the ongoing story of California wine.

Few places capture the romance of California’s Sonoma Coast quite like Bodega Bay, where dramatic ocean views, fresh local seafood, and exceptional wines come together in unforgettable fashion. This summer and fall, the iconic Inn at the Tides invites guests to experience all three during its celebrated Winemaker Dinner Series, an elegant monthly event that pairs acclaimed Sonoma wineries with thoughtfully crafted seasonal cuisine.
The series continues Friday, August 21, when Hook & Ladder Winery takes center stage for an intimate evening at the Bay View Restaurant & Lounge. Guests begin with a 6:30 p.m. no-host reception before sitting down to a four-course dinner designed to showcase both the region’s agricultural bounty and the winery’s award-winning portfolio. Winemaker Jason De Loach will guide guests through each pairing, sharing stories behind the wines while offering insights into the vineyards and winemaking philosophy that have made Hook & Ladder a Russian River Valley favorite.
The menu celebrates coastal California flavors from start to finish. Seared ahi tuna is paired with the winery’s 2023 Olivet Ranch Sauvignon Blanc, followed by pan-roasted sea bass alongside the 2022 Spider Web Ranch Chardonnay. A rack of lamb with mint reduction highlights the 2022 Severson Ranch Pinot Noir before the evening concludes with Italian olive
oil cake served with Hook & Ladder’s 2024 Fortified Zinfandel from Marcucci Farms.
Beyond the exceptional food and wine, the setting itself is part of the experience. Perched above Bodega Bay, the Bay View Restaurant offers panoramic vistas of the harbor, fishing boats, rolling hills, and spectacular sunsets that have drawn visitors to the coast for generations. Guests are encouraged to extend their stay with special room rates available for dinner attendees, transforming the evening into a relaxing coastal getaway complete with ocean breezes and the Inn's renowned hospitality.
The Winemaker Dinner Series continues throughout the year with an impressive lineup of Sonoma County wineries. Following Hook & Ladder are Benziger Family Winery on September 18, Jackson Family Wines on October 16, and Rochioli Vineyards & Winery on December 4, each offering a unique menu and the opportunity to meet the people behind some of Sonoma’s most respected labels.
Whether you’re planning a weekend escape, celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking to discover Sonoma County one delicious course at a time, the Inn at the Tides Winemaker Dinner Series offers an authentic taste of Wine Country — where remarkable wines, memorable cuisine, and breathtaking coastal scenery come together around one unforgettable table.

This summer, audiences won’t need a passport to experience the charm of a sun-drenched Greek island. The global smash-hit musical Mamma Mia! arrives in Sonoma for the very first time as the grand finale of Transcendence Theatre Company’s 15th Anniversary season of Broadway Under the Stars.
This August, Transcendence Theatre Company brings the global smash hit Mamma Mia! to Sonoma for the very first time, transforming its open-air Broadway Under the Stars stage into a sun-drenched Greek island filled with laughter, love, and the timeless music of ABBA.
Running August 13-30, Mamma Mia! serves as the grand finale of Transcendence’s 15th Anniversary summer season — a joyful production that perfectly captures the carefree spirit of summer. Set against the

picturesque backdrop of Sonoma’s Field of Dreams, just steps from the historic Sonoma Plaza, the musical invites audiences to sing along to iconic hits including “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Super Trouper,” and “The Winner Takes It All.”
At the heart of the story is Sophie, a young bride preparing for her wedding who secretly invites three men from her mother’s past to a Greek island in hopes of discovering which one is her father. What follows is a heartwarming and hilarious journey celebrating family, friendship, love, and second chances — wrapped in one of the most beloved musical scores ever written.
While Mamma Mia! has captivated audiences around the world for more than two decades, seeing it beneath Sonoma’s evening sky offers an experience unlike any traditional theater. As the sun begins to set, guests gather for Transcendence Theatre Company’s signature pre-show picnic, where local wineries, restaurants, and live music create an atmosphere that is quintessentially Sonoma. It’s an evening designed to be savored — from the first

glass of wine to the final standing ovation. That combination of Broadway-caliber performances and wine country hospitality has made Transcendence Theatre Company one of Sonoma’s signature cultural attractions. Named the No. 2 Best Outdoor Theater Performance in the United States by Newsweek readers, the company has spent the past 15 years creating experiences that encourage visitors to linger a little longer and discover all that Sonoma has to offer.
“This season brings some of the biggest Broadway vibes Sonoma has ever seen — from the powerful story and music of Ain’t Too Proud to the nostalgia of Radio Recall and the joyful energy of Mamma Mia! ,” says Artistic Director Tony Gonzalez. “Each production celebrates the power of music and how it gives us life.”
Visitors planning a weekend getaway can easily turn an

evening at Mamma Mia! into a complete Sonoma experience. Spend the afternoon exploring boutique shops around Sonoma Plaza, enjoy wine tasting at nearby wineries, savor dinner from one of the region’s acclaimed restaurants, then settle in for an unforgettable night beneath the stars. Select Sonoma hotels are also partnering with Transcendence Theatre Company to offer exclusive lodging and ticket packages, making it even easier to extend the experience into a full weekend.
The production also includes special community celebrations throughout its run. An ASL-interpreted performance will take place on Friday, August 21, making the production more accessible for all audiences, while Pride Night on Saturday, August 29 celebrates inclusion, community, and the joyful spirit that has become synonymous with Transcendence Theatre Company.
Whether you’re an ABBA fan, a Broadway enthusiast, or simply searching for the perfect summer evening in wine country, Mamma Mia! offers an unforgettable night under the stars. Filled with beloved songs, spectacular performances, and the magic of live theater under the stars, it’s the kind of experience that leaves audiences dancing all the way home.
Tickets and information at BestNightEver.org
Part of what makes a Transcendence performance unique is that the experience begins long before the curtain rises. Guests are invited to arrive early for the company's signature pre-show picnic, where local food vendors, Sonoma wines, and live music create a festive atmosphere on the lawn as the sun sets over wine country. As twilight settles in, the stage comes alive beneath the stars, offering a theatrical experience unlike any traditional indoor venue.

Situated lakeside, under sparkling stars, Lake County will celebrate a milestone moment as the Lake County Wine Alliance presents its 25th Annual Lake County Wine Auction, “Silver & Stardust,” on September 19. Set at the scenic Konocti Harbor Resort, this elegant evening brings together exceptional wines, culinary artistry and community spirit for one of the region’s most anticipated philanthropic events.
The Lake County Wine Auction offers guests a rare opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality that define this emerging wine destination. Throughout the evening, attendees will sample outstanding wines from Lake County producers, enjoy thoughtfully prepared cuisine and participate in live and silent auctions featuring unique wine experiences, travel opportunities, collectibles and more.
Beyond the celebration itself, the auction represents the heart of Lake County’s wine community. Organized by the Lake County Wine Alliance, a nonprofit cooperative of wineries, winegrowers, vineyard owners, related businesses and supporters, the event raises funds for charitable programs benefiting the local community. Since its founding, the Wine Alliance has contributed millions of dollars to organizations supporting health, education and the arts throughout Lake County.
For visitors discovering Lake County for the first time,
the auction provides an unforgettable introduction to a region known for its dramatic landscapes, volcanic soils and welcoming wine culture. Located north of Napa and Sonoma, Lake County offers a relaxed alternative for travelers seeking authentic vineyard experiences, scenic beauty and a deeper connection with winemakers and growers.
The evening’s “Silver & Stardust” theme promises an atmosphere that blends sophistication with the natural elegance of Wine Country. Guests can expect an evening filled with memorable pours, lively bidding, gourmet flavors and the camaraderie that comes from supporting a shared cause.
Whether attending as longtime supporters of Lake County’s wine industry or as travelers looking for a special Wine Country getaway, guests will find that the Lake County Wine Auction is more than an evening of fine wine—it is a celebration of generosity, craftsmanship and the community that makes this region unique.
The 25th Annual Lake County Wine Auction takes place September 19, 2026, from 4:30-10pm at Konocti Harbor Resort in Kelseyville. Tickets are available through the Lake County Wine Alliance, with proceeds supporting local charitable initiatives. winealliance.org

One of Sonoma Valley’s go-to destinations for weddings, celebrations, and unforgettable gatherings.
BY BRIE BELMONTE
I should probably start with a disclaimer: I don’t have a wedding date picked out, a venue booked, or a dress hanging in my closet. I’m not even engaged. But, like many women my age, I’ve spent my fair share of time scrolling Pinterest, saving inspiration photos, curating looks, and imagining what my future celebrations might entail. While choosing a color palette, decorations, and a dress all sounds very exciting, I try and remind myself what my dad, Henry Belmonte says, “The best celebrations aren’t about the logistics. They’re about the people, the memories, and the feeling guests leave with.” Kenwood Ranch is a venue that brings to life these words. It is nestled along vineyards and rolling hills of Sonoma Valley, where timeless wine country elegance meets elevated western. It’s a hidden gem, where people dance all night long and leave with happy hearts. It’s the venue you’ve always dreamed about, for three reasons:
1. You Can Make It Totally Your Own
Some people want lavish affairs, huge ceremonies, and extravagant parties. Others value intimate celebrations surrounded by family and friends. The beauty of this venue is that it can become both.
The iconic red barn gives the property its character, and the surrounding views of the mountains make for the perfect backdrop. It’s stunning on its own, but leaves room for creativity. Imagine your first dance inside the barn, comfortable and warm, but spacious enough to feel grand at the same time. Because when you look out the doors at the vastness of the lush vineyards and rolling hills, they scream elegance and luxury.
2. The Wine Country Experience
When your loved ones travel for an event, you want them to actually enjoy themselves. Luckily, Kenwood Ranch sits right in the heart of Sonoma Valley, which means guests can turn a wedding, celebration, or gathering into a full wine country weekend. Wine tasting, visiting Sonoma Plaza,

boutique shopping, beautiful restaurants … there’s genuinely so much to do nearby. Plus, Kenwood Ranch offers local accommodations and transportation tips on its website!
3. It’s More Than A Wedding Venue
“People often come here looking for a venue,” Henry says, “What they leave with is a place that becomes a part of their family’s story.” Yes, wedding ceremonies are incredible here, but there are so many more opportunities, too. Couples can schedule private wine tastings to curate a wine menu that feels uniquely theirs. Bridal luncheons, rehearsal dinners, engagement photos, bridal showers, welcome parties, and farewell brunches all fit naturally into the experience. And if you’re not planning a wedding, that’s okay, too. Over the years, the property has hosted graduation parties, birthdays, corporate retreats, wellness events, fundraisers, celebrations of life, boutique pop-ups, and countless family milestones. There are plenty of beautiful venues. But not every one feels personal, and not every one feels like somewhere people can fully make themselves at home – Kenwood Ranch does. So, if you are a Sonoma County local, or even a visitor from out of state, stop by for a walk through. As the serenity of Kenwood Ranch seeps into your soul, your stress will melt away. And, who knows, maybe you’re next on the list to create some incredible memories here.

The small and charming town of Glen Ellen offers visitors a perfect blend of history, wine, and natural beauty. While sometimes overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, this laid-back destination provides an authentic wine country experience without the crowds. A day in Glen Ellen is best spent exploring its scenic landscapes, discovering its vibrant local businesses, and, of course, sampling world-class wines.

Enjoy this lineup of small-lot wines with names like Angler and Tight Lines
By Barbara Barrielle
Found on the southeast corner of the Sonoma Plaza, Caddis Wines is the product of a couple who adores wine and appreciate hospitality. Chris Sorensen is the owner of Caddis Wines and its winemaker. Wife Courtney takes care of the details and assures everyone who visits their Sonoma Tasting Room or their other location in Livermore has an intimate and educational experience.
But where does fly fishing come in? “A ‘caddis’ refers to caddisfly, one of the most reliable and popular aquatic insects we imitate when fly fishing,” says Chris. “Since I’m just as passionate about fly fishing as I am about winemaking, it felt like a perfect name to represent our brand.”
At about 800 cases a year, Caddis sells wine 100% direct to consumers through their tasting rooms and on-line. Their Sonoma Plaza location stays busy with its daily schedule and Chris and Courtney have brought on additional help so you may meet Dick or Victoria when you stop by.
The Livermore location is only open seven weekends a year but, with more space and lots of family nearby, this is where Caddis Wines and their supporters celebrate wine country in a big way with a Harvest Party, November 7th, and a “Holidays in the Vineyard” on December 5th and 6th.
Two tasting rooms and a lot of wine fans in both places can be a juggle and, while Chris says sharing wines with friends where he grew up, “feels like a homecoming and a great celebration of my roots,” the tasting room in Sonoma means we, “get to be right in the mix of the Plaza’s vibrant energy year-round, introducing our small-lot wines to visitors from all over the world.”
Chris and Courtney release many Bordeaux varietals and blends, including a Malbec and Cabernet Franc, annually
and feature other wines like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, sourcing grapes from areas like Knights Valley and Russian River Valley, featuring the varietals that grow best by terroir territories.
And, just as Chris sources the best grapes for his small lots of fine wines, he seeks respite from the life of a busy winemaker by looking for trout in the Sierra Nevada rivers, especially near Truckee, or sometimes closer by where striped bass can be found as close as the Napa River. Caddis Chardonnay is a classic pairing for a fresh catch!
