BEAULIEU VINEYARD
125 Years … and Just the Beginning BY LAURA NESS
With a history as deep in the Napa Valley as that of Beaulieu Vineyard, celebrating a milestone anniversary could take many forms. But investing in the future while preserving the past is the best legacy any wine country icon could leave. The most obvious and significant investment, a multimilliondollar renovation to preserve the winery’s classic architecture, featuring stalwart 2-foot-thick stone walls, is immediately visible to all who set eyes, or foot upon the place. This represents a significant preservation effort, as well as an evolution of the winery, taking it gracefully and boldly into its next chapter.
Founders Georges & Fernande de Latour
A Nod to Founders Georges & Fernande de Latour BV founders, Georges and Fernande de Latour, who arrived in Napa Valley in 1900 to find lovely orchards of walnuts and prunes, would be proud of the results. After selling his thriving cream of tartar business, George bought a four-acre ranch in Rutherford, founding Beaulieu Vineyard and planting Cabernet Sauvignon. With Georges as general manager and Fernande as director, the de Latours joined the likes of Charles Krug, Gustave Niebaum, Jacob Beringer and George Yount as Napa’s earliest winemaking pioneers. Team Effort
The Legacy of a Brilliant Hire: André Tchelistcheff The underpinning of BV’s lasting legacy, though, was the hiring of a French-trained enologist André Tchelistcheff at the Pasteur Institute in France, in 1938. Hailed as the “dean of American Winemakers,” and “the maestro,” he influenced the landscape of American wine for decades, mentoring iconic figures like including Robert Mondavi, Louis Martini, Warren Winiarski and Mike Grgich. Tchelistcheff worked as lead winemaker at BV until 197l, but at the age of 89, rejoined the winery in 1990 to collaborate on reinventing BV’s wines and processes for a new era. His impact and presence are still felt here to this day. As guests take in the grandeur of the structure, which includes wood salvaged from former wine tanks and the winery’s original construction, they are enveloped by history. It’s evident in every architectural detail, every artifact, every photograph, including handwritten wine notes from Tchelistcheff himself. Georges de Latour’s original 1925 Cadillac Imperial Touring Car and a commemorative statue of the legendary winemaker, André Tchelistcheff, greet each visitor upon arrival.
12
A host of experts in preservation and architectural innovation collaborated to create the new vision, among them Signum Architects and BAMO, responsible for interior design. Bringing their own sensibilities to showcasing the structure’s bones, the structural retrofit was executed by Degenkolb Engineers, with historic preservation carefully looked after by Page & Turnbull. The stunning landscaping was installed by Blasen Landscape Architecture. All was overseen by Wright Contracting, who served as general contractor. The end result conveys a luxury experience, meant to build a connection to the past while providing contemporary amenities. This is a place where 125 years of history come alive, combining with modern touches to create an intimate rendezvous with the past.
Commitment to Sustainability Throughout the project, which employed adaptive reuse of resources, recycling or repurposing 99% of construction materials removed, the team was guided by the winery’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality in operations by 2030. A new solar array generates more than 30 percent of the winery’s electricity needs on site, powering the new kitchens and water-heating systems. The remainder of the estate’s electricity comes from renewable energy sources.
Artistic Expressions Abound Local artists were chosen to add their touches, including Kirk Maxson of San Francicso, who sculpted the grapevine that frames the BV timeline in the building’s entrance hall. Maxson photographed Cabernet Sauvignon leaves from Beaulieu Vineyard’s BV Ranch 10, then carefully reconstructed them in painted brass wire and sheet metal, preserving the character and structure of the living vine. Alex Friedman of Sausalito brought her love of textiles to the creation of Rhythm of the Vineyards, a handwoven wool tapestry on a cotton seine warp, inspired by photographs of BV’s Ranch 1 Vineyard. The aerial view of the endless rows of vines, embued with rich, earthy colors and the visually gratifying pattern of repetition, creates a sense of timelessness.

Taste History in a Bottle In 1936, when Andre Tchelistcheff first tasted the Cabernet Sauvignon made from BV’s oldest vineyards, he insisted that it receive its own bottling, giving birth to the tradition of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($180). Over the last 90 years, Georges de Latour Private Reserve has become one of the most recognized wines in the world, celebrated for its bold, complex character and that distinctive note of “Rutherford Dust.” This wine has been enjoyed by Presidents of the United States, foreign dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip of England, astronauts, and countless celebrities. Visitors can taste the latest and library vintages of this iconic wine, still sourced from vineyards planted by Georges de Latour, as well as these iconic releases that have become part of Napa’s wine lexicon. Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP $80) Brimming with classic “sauvage” character, this tribute to western Rutherford benchland terroir is a selection from BV estate vineyards to achieve an elegant, layered fruit expression, characterized by cocoapowder tannins called Rutherford Dust. Tapestry Reserve Red Wine (SRP $65)
Flavors of the Past, Preserved But it’s what goes on inside the cellar that preserves the flavors of the winery for the generations of today and tomorrow. The winemaking team of Senior Winemaker & General Manager Nate Weis, Winemaker Megan Twitchell, and Assistant Winemaker Lindsey Mongan, carry on the lasting legacy of founding winemaker, André Tchelistcheff, to this day.
Since its inception in 1990, Tapestry Reserve has always been a tribute to BV’s French heritage and a nod to the classic Bordeaux blends and Clarets renowned worldwide. Sourced from a selection of specific vineyard blocks of top-quality grapes, Tapestry combines the attributes of terroir expression in a round, approachable tannin structure. Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP $40) Truly a “group effort,” this Cabernet Sauvignon comes from BV estate vineyards as well as quality growing partners throughout Napa Valley’s Rutherford, Calistoga, and St. Helena appellations, yielding a wine with a complex flavor profile.

CALIFORNIA VS. FRANCE: THE JUDGMENT CONTINUES Fifty years later, a blind tasting reveals some unexpected winners. Fifty years after the legendary Judgment of Paris forever changed the perception of California wine, luxury magazine VENU conceived the idea of recreating the historic tasting — with a few important twists — and invited wine journalist and industry veteran Monty Preiser to organize and conduct the event. Presented in collaboration with VENU and sponsored in part by Wine Country This Month, the ambitious event brought together historic and contemporary California and French wines for a remarkable day of blind tasting and competition. Preiser embraced the opportunity to go beyond simply repeating history. He and Master Sommelier Virginia Philip assembled the wines for four flights designed to tell two distinct stories. The first two flights recreated the spirit of the original 1976 Judgment of Paris, featuring California and French wines from the wineries whose bottles had competed in the historic tasting. The goal was to see how those legendary wines — or their successors from the same producers — would perform against one another 50 years later. For the third and fourth flights, Virginia and Monty assembled what they believed to be some of the best wines being produced. Contemporary California selections from Napa and Sonoma were matched against current French wines, creating a second competition that explored how the two great wine-producing regions compare today. Preiser also assembled an eight-member judging panel representing more than 200 years of combined experience across the wine and culinary worlds. All four flights were tasted blind at Napa’s renowned La Toque restaurant, with the identities and prices of the wines concealed from the judges. The scores were recorded before the wines were revealed, ensuring that reputation, producer and price would have no influence on the results. The results were unveiled later that evening during a gala dinner at Rotation by Feast It Forward at the Oxbow, attended by many of Napa Valley’s prominent members of the wine community. While 2026 has brought numerous celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris, this event offered something different. It revisited the historic 1976 competition while also looking forward, asking a broader question: “How do the finest California wines of today compare with their French counterparts?” The results were fascinating — and offered more than a few surprises, particularly when it came to the relationship between price and performance.

Storming the Castle
The Magic of Tuscan Medieval Castello di Amorosa and its Wines BY BARBARA BARIELLE
Just beyond Calistoga, a medieval castle rises dramatically above the Napa Valley vineyards, complete with stone towers, battlements, a drawbridge and centuries-old European building materials. Yet this is not a relic of the past — it is a working winery, created by vintner Dario Sattui and opened to the public in 2007. Step across the drawbridge into Castello di Amorosa, and the ordinary rules of wine country seem to disappear. Inside these massive walls, history, fantasy and winemaking come together in an experience unlike any other in Napa Valley.
Halloween Behind the Castle Walls We will delve into the castle and its wines a bit more later, but Castello di Amorosa has some not-to-bemissed and “unique to a castle” events coming this fall and winter. Can you imagine a better place to spend Halloween than at a castle? Imagination runs wild, and the scares are built right into the walls. Madeleine Reid, VP of Events and Hospitality, explains this year’s take on Halloween at The Castle. “Many of our longtime guests will remember the Pagan Ball, our Halloween tradition before COVID. This year, we're bringing Halloween back to the Castello with an entirely new experience: an evening of music, dancing, and revelry within the castle walls. Once the sun goes down, the Castello transforms into an unforgettable setting to dress up, raise a glass, and dance the night away.”

WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH | OCTOBER 2026
Built Like a Medieval Castle Owner and designer Sattui spent decades studying medieval European castles, focusing on the design and construction methods used during that period. Even antique bricks and tiles were brought from Europe, and ironwork was hand-forged by Italian artisans.
Beyond the Drawbridge: A Working Winery While this magnificent structure, with 141,000 square feet, 107 rooms, and eight levels, (including four underground), may initially attract visitors, the castle is, at its core, a working winery. Surrounded by vineyards and specializing in Italian varietals like Sangiovese, Barbera, and Vermentino, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay that thrive in Napa Valley, Castello di Amorosa has an array of wines to please any palate. Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and La Castellana Reserve Super Tuscan Blend offer a beautiful showcase of the winemaking team’s skill, depth and artistry. Director of Winemaking Peter Velleno, sums up the challenge. “The Castle may be what first captures your attention but our goal is for the wine to become the reason you return. The wines must live up to the experience.”
Enter If You Dare A tour of Castello di Amorosa is like no other winery … in Napa Valley, California or anywhere. From the moment you gasp upon seeing the enormity of the Medieval defensive towers, imposing brick facade, and the drawbridge lowered for entry, the magic begins. The Great Hall beckons you to proceed and explore while imposing suits of armor keep guard. Continuing down massive corridors lined with history, you descend into the inner reaches of the Castle and descend into the dungeon and torture chamber, all replicated with incredible detail.
From Dungeon to Wine Cellar Fortunately, waiting at the end of this wondrous journey are phenomenal wines from the Castle’s own vineyards and an opportunity to taste lesser known Italian varietals. You will be transported back to Medieval Italian times then treated to a tasting complete with modern stemware and a chance to exchange castle stories with your fellow guests. Now your cell phone works, and modern conveniences bring you back; castle life was a fantasy explored in the course of 90 minutes.
Old-World Spirit, New-World Thinking The castle may be new in construction yet old in spirit but Castello di Amorosa’s winemaking reflects current trends like their expanding their wine list with new styles and the recently developed line of alcohol-free wines called Libero. Castello di Amorosa’s President Georg Salzner points out, “the Castle opens the door, but the wine builds the relationship. We see guests arrive amazed by the architecture and leave talking about a Cabernet, Sangiovese or another wine they discovered during their visit. When they come back as members, that's when we know we've created something much bigger than a single visit.” Sign up for our email newsletter at WineCountryThisMonth.com

Tucked into the vineyards and rolling countryside of Kelseyville, Harmony is quickly becoming one of Northern California wine country’s most distinctive intimate dining experiences—a place where exceptional food and wine are only part of the story. Harmony welcomes just ten guests for each dinner, but reservations can be made for anywhere from one to all ten seats. Guests gather around a single communal table, where an evening unfolds over seven courses created by Michelin Star-trained Chef Jevgenija Saromova. Vegetables, herbs and fruit are harvested from Harmony’s own micro-garden and micro-orchard, supplemented by exceptional seasonal ingredients and thoughtfully selected wines.
Jevgenija Saromova and Mara Mehlman
The experience is intentionally personal. Proprietor Mara Mehlman guides guests through the wines and stories behind each course, while Chef Jevgenija’s beautifully composed dishes arrive throughout the evening. Conversation flows around the table, and people who may have arrived as strangers often find themselves sharing stories and laughter by evening’s end. Now, that table has inspired something new. TWO OPEN SEATS, a project founded by Harmony, reserves two seats each month for two people who will be invited to experience the complete Harmony evening as Harmony’s guests. The invitation begins not with an application or contest, but with an old fashion handwritten letter from someone who believes they know who should fill those Two Open Seats. It might be someone who has inspired others, spent a lifetime caring for people around them, reached an important milestone, begun a new chapter, or could simply use an unexpected and wonderful evening. There are no complicated qualifications. Harmony asks only that each letter begin: “I know who should fill these Two Open Seats…” From there, writers simply share what makes those people special to them. Each month, one letter is selected and an invitation for two is extended. Once they arrive, there is no distinction between the invited guests and anyone else around the table. As Harmony puts it, “Once you’re at the table, you’re simply our guest.” It is a fitting idea for a dining experience built around connection: one person writes a letter about someone who matters, and at Harmony in Kelseyville Lake County Wine Country, Two Open Seats are waiting for their story. Letters are mailed to: Two Open Seats, Harmony 3210 Big Valley Road, Kelseyville, CA 95451 707-730-8855 • www.harmony-ca.com

What s' New and Notable! MICRO-WINERY GUILD Small Wineries with a Brighter Tomorrow LA MAISON at Stone Edge Farm & Vineyards Sonoma’s acclaimed Enclos and Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery have unveiled La Maison, the winery’s first public tasting room and hospitality destination. Located in a reimagined estate on Sonoma’s east side, La Maison offers wine tastings, seasonal food-and-wine experiences created by Enclos chef Brian Limoges, and gardens that will help supply produce to the restaurant. The opening marks a major expansion for the family-owned winery, whose limited-production Bordeaux-style wines were previously available primarily to members. The new venue also creates a more immersive visitor experience by bringing together the winery, culinary program, and farm under one roof, further elevating Sonoma’s luxury wine and food offerings. 21200 8th St E, Sonoma | 707-935-6520
Some of Wine Country’s most distinctive wines come from small, family-run producers. The Micro-Winery Guild is bringing these independent wineries together to strengthen their voice, build new opportunities and shine a brighter spotlight on producers making fewer than 5,000 cases annually. Among its newest initiatives is the T.A.S.T.E. Verified Experience, created in response to California’s Assembly Bill 720. The program offers guests a more intimate way to experience wine country — walking vineyards with growers, exploring cellars with winemakers or participating in seasonal vineyard activities. Each experience is hosted by the people who grow the grapes and make the wine. This month, the Guild will also launch the Micro-Winery Trail, an AI-enabled wine concierge designed to help consumers discover the region’s smallest producers.
Through partnerships, research and innovative hospitality programs, the Guild is working to ensure micro-wineries have a meaningful place in the future of California wine. microwineryguild.com

BRANDLIN ESTATE VINEYARDS 100 Years of Winegrowing on Mount Veeder
High above Napa Valley, where rugged slopes rise above the morning fog and vineyards cling to the mountainside, Brandlin Estate Vineyard is celebrating a remarkable milestone: 100 years of winegrowing in 2026. The story began in 1926, when Henry Brandlin planted Zinfandel on the steep, rocky slopes of Mount Veeder. Today, the 49-acre estate is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varieties, but its heart remains a historic block of head-trained, dry-farmed Zinfandel—approximately 10 acres of vines that have survived a century of changing seasons. The Brandlin family’s connection to Mount Veeder reaches even further back. They settled on the mountain in the 1870s, establishing a homestead and becoming part of the community’s early history. The family cultivated orchard fruit, operated a local grain store and ran the Mount Veeder stagecoach, providing a vital link between the isolated mountain settlement and Napa Valley below. Nearly five decades later, Henry Brandlin added winegrowing to the family’s endeavors. During Prohibition, some of the grapes were sold for sacramental wine, while select fruit was kept for the family’s own small-scale winemaking. The original Zinfandel vines proved ideally suited to their challenging mountain home. Their deep roots reach into well-drained, decomposed granite soils, producing small quantities of intensely flavored fruit. A century later, the old vines remain a living connection to the Brandlin family and the early days of mountain viticulture. In 1998, Henry’s son, Chester Brandlin, entrusted the property and its legacy to the Schmidheiny family, longtime owners of Cuvaison. The new stewards preserved the historic Zinfandel while expanding the vineyard’s potential for Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties. Today, vines stretch across a ridgeline from approximately 900 to 1,250 feet. Twelve blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon are joined by Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Above the fog line, with cooling influences from San Pablo Bay and a long growing season, the vineyard produces wines marked by concentration, freshness, structure and unmistakable mountain character. Winemaker Rebecca Peterson and Director of Winemaking Steve Rogstad take a block-by-block approach, using small-lot fermentations to capture the nuances of the estate. Sustainable farming practices—including California Certified Sustainable and Fish Friendly Farming certifications—help ensure the vineyard remains healthy for generations to come. A century after Henry Brandlin planted his first vines, the estate’s greatest achievement may be its continuity. The old Zinfandel still grows where it always has, its roots reaching deep into Mount Veeder soil—a living reminder that great vineyards are not simply cultivated. They are passed down, cared for and allowed to tell their stories, one vintage at a time.

With no added sugar or artificial ingredients, it’s crisp, refreshing, and true to Anaba’s terroir-first winemaking. anabawines.com @anaba_wines | 707-996-4188
Drinking ‘Dry’? Know Your Labels. Before you set out to explore the growing list of alcohol alternatives in Wine Country, a little label literacy goes a long way. Terms like alcohol-free, nonalcoholic, low-alcohol, and dealcoholized can be confusing— and they don’t all mean the same thing. Start with the basics to better understand what’s in your glass: Alcoholic Fermentation is the process in which yeast converts grape sugars into alcohol, transforming grape juice into wine. ABV (Alcohol By Volume) is the percentage of alcohol in a beverage.
Korbel Aire | Russian River Valley A lighter take on bubbly, Korbel Aire offers tropical fruit, crisp apple, pear and delicate florals with lower alcohol. Finished in the traditional Méthode Champenoise, it delivers Korbel’s signature sparkle in a refreshingly lighter style. korbel.com | @korbel_1882 | 707-824-7000

Grape juice is never fermented whereas most nonalcoholic wine begins as traditional wine. Dealcoholized wine is produced through fermentation and subsequently processed to remove alcohol. A product under 0.5% ABV may be labeled “dealcoholized” or “nonalcoholic,” subject to federal labeling requirements. Low-alcohol isn’t the same as NA (no alcohol). A wine at 6-9% ABV may be considerably lighter than a typical table wine, but it still contains a meaningful amount of alcohol. Nonalcoholic wine does not necessarily mean zero alcohol. Wine from which alcohol has been removed and that contains less than 0.5% ABV is “Nonalcoholic”. Alcohol-free is a stricter term for U.S. wine labeling. “Alcohol free” may be used only when the product contains no alcohol (0.0% ABV).

Pumpkin, Corn & Yukon Gold Potato Chowder The Season, Perfectly Paired

Sweet pumpkin and corn mingle with creamy Yukon Gold potatoes and sweet potato, creating a rich, comforting chowder that is as beautiful as it is satisfying. BEAU WINE TOURS
Three Decades of Wine Country Journeys For 30 years, Beau Wine Tours & Charter Services has helped visitors experience Northern California wine country, one memorable journey at a time. What began with a passion for wine and hospitality has grown into a full-service luxury transportation company serving Napa, Sonoma, the greater Bay Area, and destinations throughout Northern California. And while wine tasting is all about slowing down, savoring the moment, and enjoying the scenery, getting from one winery to the next can be anything but relaxing — especially when someone in the group has to drive. That’s where a professional driver can make all the difference. Hiring a dedicated driver transforms a day of wine tasting from a logistical challenge into a true Wine Country experience. Rather than navigating winding vineyard roads, watching the clock, or worrying about who will be the designated driver, guests can focus on what brought them here in the first place: discovering exceptional wines, beautiful properties, and memorable experiences.
With Beau Wine Tours, the journey is part of the experience.
There’s also the freedom to enjoy the day without constantly thinking about the next turn. A professional driver handles the transportation, allowing everyone to relax between tasting appointments, take in the vineyard views, and enjoy each stop to its fullest. With three decades of experience, Beau Wine Tours understands that exceptional transportation is about more than getting from point A to point B. It’s about service, local knowledge, and creating a seamless experience from the moment the day begins. “Thirty years is an extraordinary milestone, but the relationships we’ve built along the way are what mean the most to us,” says Thomas Buck, President & CEO. “We’ve had the privilege of connecting generations of guests with the people, places, and experiences that make Northern California so special.” Those relationships are at the heart of Beau’s three-decade legacy. Over the years, the company has been part of countless celebrations, business trips, special occasions, and leisurely days spent exploring wine country. For visitors planning a Napa or Sonoma wine-tasting adventure, arranging transportation in advance is one of the smartest ways to make the most of the experience. Leave the driving to professionals and spend the day doing what Wine Country does best—tasting, exploring, relaxing, and making memories. After all, the best wine-tasting day shouldn’t end with someone worrying about the drive home.

Its relaxed, contemporary setting provides plenty of room to stroll, sip and socialize while taking in the surrounding Wine Country atmosphere. For those arriving early, VIP tickets offer an especially intimate experience. Limited to 300 guests, the VIP tasting runs from noon to 1 p.m., providing an opportunity to meet winemakers and enjoy a more leisurely start before the General Admission tasting begins from 1 to 4 p.m. Winemaker Bob Cabral, who has been involved with Healdsburg Crush for years, says the event’s appeal goes beyond the wine. It is a gathering where wine lovers, winemakers and the community come together for a shared purpose. That purpose is at the heart of the afternoon. Boys & Girls Clubs of SonomaMarin uses proceeds from Healdsburg Crush to support after-school programs, summer camps and essential resources for local children and teens. The organization has deep roots in Healdsburg, where its operations began 80 years ago. Today, its flagship Healdsburg Clubhouse is being rebuilt, with an anticipated opening in summer 2027. PALMAZ VINEYARDS
A Legacy Reimagined on Mount George Twenty-five years ago, the Palmaz Family stood on the slopes of Mount George with a vision: to bring a piece of Napa Valley history back to life. Today, that vision encompasses a 600-acre estate where history, technology and a deep respect for the land shape the Palmaz Vineyards experience. The story began with Dr. Julio Palmaz, who immigrated to the United States from Argentina in 1978 with his wife, Amalia, and their daughter, Florencia. While pursuing medical research at UC Davis, Julio and Amalia spent weekends exploring Napa Valley, where a fascination with wine grew into a dream of creating their own winery. In 1996, the family discovered Mount George and immediately recognized its historic significance. The property had once been home to Cedar Knoll Vineyard and Winery, established in 1881 by Napa wine pioneer Henry Hagen. Following Prohibition, the estate was abandoned for 86 years. Rather than seeing a forgotten property, the Palmaz Family saw an opportunity to restore it. They replanted the vineyards and began building a new chapter, with the first Palmaz Vineyards vintage released in 2001. Perhaps nowhere is the family’s innovative spirit more evident than beneath Mount George, where the estate’s 64 acres of vineyards feed into an 18-story underground cavern carved into the mountain. A pioneering gravity-flow system moves grapes naturally through the winemaking process, while the winery’s net-zero water consumption allows 100 percent of its water to be reclaimed for reuse in vineyard irrigation. Yet, the heart of Palmaz shines through in the way guests experience the winery. Through intimate tours and tastings, visitors explore the vineyards, historic Hagen House and underground cave before settling in for a seated tasting with seasonal bites. Each visit offers a closer look at the family’s approach to wine and hospitality, bringing guests into the story of the estate and the people who call it home. For CEO Florencia Palmaz, the goal has always been to create something built to endure. “When you know the work must outlive you, you build with a different sense of purpose.” After 25 years, the Palmaz story has come full circle, from weekend drives through Napa Valley to the creation of a groundbreaking winery. As Palmaz Vineyards enters its next chapter, the family continues to explore what happens when the lessons of the past meet the possibilities of the future. 4029 Hagen Road, Napa : : 707-226-5587 : : palmazvineyards.com

Petaluma Gap
WIND TO WINE FESTIVAL There is something undeniably special about a wine region shaped by the wind. On Saturday, October 17, the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance invites wine lovers to experience that distinctive character firsthand at the Petaluma Gap Wind to Wine Festival, a harvest celebration set against the rolling vineyards and historic landscape of Gambonini Family Ranch. From 1 to 4pm, the ranch will come alive with wines from more than 20 Petaluma Gap wineries, offering guests the opportunity to taste their way through one of Sonoma County’s most distinctive winegrowing regions.
PARTICIPATING WINERIES Adobe Road Winery Anaba Wines Blue Farm Brooks Note Winery Calstar Cellars Cline Family Cellars Deodora Estate Vineyard Gust Wines Keller Estate Kendric Vineyards Lombardi Wines MacRostie Winery McEvoy Ranch Montagne Russe Wines Panther Ridge Sangiacomo Family Wines Schermeister Winery Schug Winery Thirty-Seven Wines Three Sticks Toje Wines Trombetta Family Wines Vaughn Duffy Wines
The Petaluma Gap is unlike virtually any other California wine region. Its position between the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay creates a powerful maritime influence, with cool coastal winds sweeping through the Gap and dramatic temperature changes throughout the growing season. The result is a long, gradual ripening period that helps produce wines known for vibrant acidity, structure, elegance and complexity—particularly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. The festival offers a chance to explore those differences glass by glass while meeting the winemakers and growers behind the wines. Participating producers include Blue Farm, Cline Family Cellars, Keller Estate, MacRostie Winery, Sangiacomo Family Wines, Schug Winery, Three Sticks, Toje Wines and many more. And the wine is only part of the experience. Guests can enjoy artisan cheese and charcuterie, vegetarian and traditional paella prepared by Omar Cruz, and live music from Karmic Beauty while taking in expansive vineyard and ranch views. The setting is equally compelling. Gambonini Family Ranch is a historic former dairy ranch, and its beautifully restored hay barn provides an elegant backdrop for the afternoon. The location offers a fitting connection to the agricultural heritage that remains at the heart of the Petaluma Gap. For wine travelers, the festival is an opportunity to slow down, meet the people who farm and make these wines, and experience the landscape that gives them their identity. Come for the wine, stay for the scenery—and leave with a deeper appreciation for just how much the wind can influence what ends up in your glass. PETALUMA GAP WIND TO WINE FESTIVAL October 17 • 1–4pm Gambonini Family Ranch, Petaluma VIP $95 • General Admission $75 petalumagap.com/wind-to-wine-festival

■ LAKE COUNTY
Six Sigma Ranch & Winery
Harmony
‘FALL OFF THE RADAR’ IN LAKE COUNTY Take the road less traveled to exceptional wines, hidden gems and unforgettable hospitality. There are wine regions you visit because everyone else is going — and then there are places you discover because you’re ready to take the road less traveled. Lake County is the latter. With its invitation to “Fall off the Radar in Lake County,” this uncrowded corner of Northern California wine country offers something increasingly rare: room to slow down, explore and actually connect with the people and places behind the wine. Just north of Napa Valley, Lake County’s vineyards stretch across a landscape shaped by mountains, volcanic soils and the expansive waters of Clear Lake. The region is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, but the real appeal is the experience: relaxed tasting rooms, scenic back roads and winemakers who have plenty of time to share their stories. One of the best places to begin is Six Sigma Ranch & Winery, a family-owned ranch and winery near Lower Lake. Set amid oak-studded hills and expansive countryside, Six Sigma feels less like a traditional tasting-room stop and more like a destination. Estate-grown wines, including Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, are complemented by the working-ranch atmosphere and opportunities to explore the property. It’s the kind of place where visitors are encouraged to linger rather than rush on to the next appointment. For a completely different side of Lake County wine country, head to Brassfield Estate Winery in the High Valley AVA. The dramatic estate combines sweeping views, vineyards
54
and an elegant, Mediterranean-inspired setting with a leisurely tasting experience. It’s a reminder that “off the radar” doesn’t mean lacking sophistication—it simply means you may have the view, the wine and the moment mostly to yourself. Nearby, smaller producers such as Fults Family Vineyards add another layer to the Lake County experience, showcasing the independent spirit that defines the region. Here, wine tasting can feel personal and conversational, with an opportunity to discover bottles you might not encounter on the more traveled wine routes. Wine country is about more than what’s in the glass. In Middletown, Twin Pine Casino & Hotel offers an easy place to stay, dine and extend the evening. The property includes a boutique hotel, restaurants, entertainment and its Off the Vine wine tasting room, making it a convenient home base for exploring southern Lake County. Then there’s Harmony, a remarkable new culinary destination in Kelseyville. Created by proprietor Mara Mehlman and Chef Jevgenija Saromova, Harmony brings together a seven-course tasting menu, local ingredients and thoughtfully selected wines in an intimate communal-table setting. With just 10 guests, dinner becomes as much about conversation and connection as it is about food and wine. Lake County is worth discovering. Come for the wine, stay for the scenery, the hospitality and the unexpected experiences. Learn more at lakecounty.com

BURTECH FAMILY VINEYARD
A New Destination in Kenwood for Wine, Food & Family Wine, pizza and generations of family winemaking are coming together in Kenwood at Burtech Family Vineyard’s new tasting room — a destination where award-winning wines meet seriously good food in a relaxed Wine Country setting. The Burtech story is rooted in family, with third-generation winemaker Drew Damskey carrying on a tradition of California winemaking while bringing his own vision to the vineyards. Today, Burtech Family Vineyard tends vines in Kenwood, Glen Ellen and Encinitas, where the family’s vineyard surrounds its equestrian center. The new Kenwood tasting room offers an experience that goes beyond the traditional wine tasting. Guests can settle in with Burtech’s wines and a menu featuring fresh salads and handcrafted pizzas, baked to order in a beautiful, highend pizza oven. Expect crisp, beautifully charred crusts and thoughtfully selected toppings designed to pair naturally with the wines. The family’s passion for pizza is already well established. Burtech was voted Best Pizza in Vista, bringing a Southern California favorite to its new Sonoma County home. The Kenwood location reflects the family’s approach to hospitality: approachable, welcoming and centered around bringing people together. Whether stopping in for a tasting, sharing a pizza with friends or enjoying a leisurely afternoon surrounded by vineyards, guests will find plenty of reasons to stay awhile. It’s an experience that connects the dots between the family’s vineyard properties while giving Burtech a new home in the heart of Sonoma Valley.

MOON HOLLOW ESTATE WINES Just the Starting Point to Gorgoeus Mountain Wines
BY BARBARA BARRIELLE
The Moon Hollow Tasting Room has the air of a Paris bistro on the western side of the beautiful Sonoma Plaza, not far from Chateau Sonoma, a store devoted to antiques and the French lifestyle. It is an airy welcoming place with indoor and outdoor tables and the perfect way to taste the all estategrown wines while not having to travel to their vineyards high on Sonoma Mountain in the Moon Mountain District AVA. Moon Hollow organically grows 18 acres of vineyards surrounded by more than 800 acres of protected estate land. Replanted in 2012 on undulating volcanic slopes above 1200 feet, the vineyards represent new approaches in an area of some of Sonoma’s earliest grape plantings, where winemaking goes back to the 19th century. Moon Hollow’s philosophy is that everything begins in the vineyards and supporting this philosophy is renowned organic viticulturist Phil Coturri, one of the pioneers of organic winegrowing in California. Farming at 1200 feet elevation on volcanic soils with dramatic day-to-night temperature shifts is challenging, but the results are in the bottle. Warm afternoons allow the fruit to achieve full ripeness while cool evenings preserve freshness, vibrant acidity, and aromatic complexity. Low yields produce expressive wines with balance and elegance, with the structure to age beautifully.
the personality of the grape into the wine where its integrity, flavor and freshness becomes apparent in the glass. There is no signature style at Moon Hollow. The goal is to bring the best expression from the fanatically farmed vineyards into the bottle and then to hold the wines until the team believes they are ready to be enjoyed. Many will age for years to come and those who have the patience to cellar them longer are rewarded with even greater complexity and nuance. Production is intentionally small. Even in the strongest vintages, approximately 25,000 vines produce only about 2,000 cases of wine, an average of just one bottle per vine. Definitely a tasting room on the Sonoma Plaza worthy of a visit and a further exploration of an extraordinary vineyard. OPEN DAILY 1-6PM, SATURDAY & SUNDAY 11AM-6PM
481 1st Street West, Sonoma 707-744-4777 : : moonhollow.com
Certified organic by CCOF, Coturri makes sure that each vine is tended by hand at least 12 times throughout the growing season and every farming decision is made with the long-term health of the vineyards and surrounding ecosystem in mind. The same hands-on, organic and regenerative approach is carried into the winery where winemaker Mark Herold works with fruit intentionally to “preserve and enhance what the vineyard gives us each vintage.” Moon Hollow does not sell fruit nor do they purchase it. Every grape that goes into their wines is raised and treated in an organic manner to bring
