It doesn’t hurt to dream and imagine your next getaway to wine country. If you are going to start planning that getaway, Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga is the best place to start. As the warmth of summer days roll into Napa Valley, a fool-proof way to make the most of the season is a day spent in their gardens at the base of the Palisade Mountains, lauded as one of the most scenic tastings in the north valley.
One of our favorite stops, Bennett Lane, is known for its succulent Cabernets, their signature “feasting wine,” Maximus, and for one of the best visitor experiences in the valley. Founded by Randy and Lisa Lynch in 2003, Bennett Lane’s off-the-beaten-track location and friendly tasting room offers a “secret gem” to Napa visitors and a great way to learn about – and try – some of Napa’s best wines in a more intimate setting.
Bennett Lane Winery is located in an understated Mediterranean-style building at the secluded and beautiful northern end of Napa Valley, and is well worth the drive. Weekends are filling up fast, and tastings are available by appointment.
Bennett Lane’s Cabs have continuously garnered critical acclaim. In the short period that the winery has been open they have received an incredible 78 scores of 90+ points between Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Year after year, the popular blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah has won accolades from critics and visitors alike. The “red feasting wine,” as Maximus is affectionately referred to on the label, demonstrates owners Randy and Lisa Lynch’s commitment to making wine an integral part of entertaining with family and friends. The current vintage of 2020 is available at the winery –and it is one of the best deals in the valley at $60. Bennett Lane’s wines are crafted to be approachable, yet complex – or what owner Randy Lynch calls “the best of both worlds,” meaning you can drink them today, but they are structured enough to cellar for several years. “My goal is for us to make consistent wines – both in quality and taste – from year to year, so that consumers can trust Bennett Lane wines,” he says.
Bennett Lane Winery has three different flight options to choose from, with the most popular Taste of Napa Valley flight starting at just $35 per person. This includes four of Bennett Lane’s wines: Reserve Chardonnay, Maximus Red Feasting Wine, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet enthusiasts can upgrade to their Cabernet Vertical or Cabernet Exploration flight and get a chance to try three of the wineries top tier Cabernets, including the Lynch Family Vineyard Calistoga Cabernet with less than 100 cases produced. On that perfect summer day, be sure and ask about their elusive White Maximus, available exclusively at the winery.
Be sure to put Bennett Lane on your short-list of must-visit tasting rooms as the production is small and the Cabernets sell out quickly. Visiting Bennett Lane affords tasters another rarity with a small winery: a likely run-in with the winemaking team and owners.
Bennett Lane is located at 3340 CA-128, in Calistoga. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (707) 942-6684 or via Cellarpass.

Your local farmers’ market, strawberry stand, or roadside farmstand creates an excellent opportunity to know your producers and to support local farmers who employ any number of organic, regenerative, Biodynamic®, sustainable, pesticide-free growing practices. By making “local” part of your weekly routine, shopping becomes a joy rather than a chore. Your neighborhood farmers’ market is a place for the community to gather, explore new tastes, and where agricultural bounties and family stories are shared. Learn preservation techniques, recipes, and prep tips for what you just bought. Savoring produce at the peak of its season and meeting the people who grow your food is the best reason to support your local farmer.
There’s something intrinsically satisfying about hand selecting your seasonal produce, dairy, meats, and flowers directly from the grower that makes the fruit taste sweeter, the blooms more fragrant, and the meat, poultry and seafood more flavorful. This Farmers’ Market phenomenon can be distilled down to very simple principles: growing local, growing clean, and growing with the season. There’s no rocket science or tomfoolery involved; it’s all down to the small, even micro-scaled farmers who harness their passion for what they grow and how they grow it; literally funneling that energy into nurturing, tending, watering, and feeding each plant to coax out its optimum color, texture, flavor, and nutritional value.

Nothing gets us more excited here in wine country than the annual opening of our neighborhood strawberry stands. It marks the beginning of summer, and every community is fiercely loyal to their favorite stand. But with so many dotted throughout Sonoma and Napa counties, there’s plenty to visit and support. By shopping your local strawberry stand, you’ll typically find varieties that your local grocery store doesn’t stock, and they’re brimming with sweetness like ‘Chandler’ (early-season, April through June) or the ‘Albion’ variety which can tolerate more heat and are available from June to November. Most of the stands also carry a small selection of locally grown produce, jams/jellies, and other pantry goods too so bring a small box to haul it all home!
Tip: Most of the strawberry stands vary their hours, depending on how the strawberries ripen throughout the season. Follow your favorite one on social so that you’ll always receive their current schedule in your feed.

BY MELISSA VOGT
Tucked into the windswept hills of Napa Valley’s Los Carneros AVA, Hyde Vineyard is a name that resonates far beyond its quiet stretch of vine-covered land. Revered by winemakers and collectors alike, the vineyard has become synonymous with precision farming and site-driven wines that speak eloquently of their coolclimate origins. Founded by Larry Hyde in 1979, Hyde Vineyard helped define Carneros as a region capable of producing world-class Chardonnay, long before those varietals became fashionable in California.
Hyde’s vision was meticulous: to cultivate a vineyard that prioritized clonal diversity, soil health, and a profound understanding of how fog, wind, and sun converge in Carneros. Over the decades, the vineyard has become a source of fruit for some of Napa and Sonoma’s most revered labels, putting their signature on Hyde’s expressive fruit while preserving its unmistakable core.
Today, Hyde Vineyard remains a benchmark for elegance and restraint, a standard-bearer for Carneros’ unique terroir. Its undulating blocks, planted to a thoughtful mix of heritage clones and rootstocks, yield wines known for their complexity, vibrant acidity, and graceful aging potential. Chardonnay from the Hyde
Vineyard invites drinkers into a deeper conversation about place and winemaking influence. This tasting explores Hyde Vineyard’s enduring legacy of expressive Chardonnay.
Bouchaine Vineyards, 2023 Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay Lush yet structured, Bouchaine’s Hyde Chardonnay combines juicy stone fruit and florals with rich texture and power. Barrel fermented with lees aging and 75% malolactic fermentation, it leans toward opulence while preserving vibrancy. Compared to the more mineraldriven Hyde Estate and Ram’s Gate, and the leaner Miner, Bouchaine’s style is plush and generous, with 38% new French oak adding depth. It’s a standout for those who enjoy bold Carneros Chardonnay with finesse and flair.
Miner Family Winery, 2023 Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay Miner’s Hyde Chardonnay showcases bright citrus and spiced pear with mineral lift and subtle oak. Made with 100% malolactic fermentation and full barrel aging, it’s richer than the Ram’s Gate style but more restrained than Bouchaine’s. Its clean, acid-driven finish aligns it with Ramey’s elegance, though with less new oak and aging time. A crisp, polished take on Hyde’s terroir, it balances freshness and weight with a subtle nod to old-world Chardonnay.
“Our vineyard team is proud to always strive higher, to pursue a goal of excellence, and move forward
with wines
that break barriers and open new frontiers.”
– Larry Hyde founder
Crafted by the vineyard’s founder, the 2021 Larry Hyde Chardonnay offers mouthwatering aromas of ripe peach, nectarine, and vanilla, with a palate of caramelized pineapple and citrus. Aged 11 months in 25% new oak, it sits stylistically between the minerality of the Ram’s Gate expression and the richness of Bouchaine’s version. Lower yields from drought conditions result in exceptional concentration and balance, offering both ripeness and verve — an expressive, legacy-driven Chardonnay from the hands that know the vineyard best.
Ramey’s Hyde Chardonnay is the most age-worthy and traditional in structure, with 20 months in French oak (20% new) and full native yeast and malolactic fermentation. Clones include Old Wente and Calera, giving layered richness, flinty minerality, and savory complexity. It shares minerality with the Hyde Estate Chardonnay but is denser and more textured. This bottling stands apart for its depth and extended élevage — offering a cellarworthy expression of Hyde Vineyard.
Ram’s Gate Winery’s bottling is the most vineyardfocused of the group. A blend of Musqué and Robert Young clones, it balances coconut-laden aromatics with broad texture. Unique for skipping malolactic on the Musqué, the wine retains crystalline purity and energy, with notes of citrus and minerality, combined with the Robert Young clone’s depth and richness. Compared to Ramey’s long-aging style or Bouchaine’s lush ripeness, Hyde’s version is pristine and precise—a deeply mineraldriven lens on the vineyard’s quiet power.
Together, these Chardonnays reveal Hyde Vineyard’s remarkable range — proof that great terroir speaks in many voices, each one expressive, elegant, and true to place.
Hyde Designate Chardonnays
Currently Available
Hyde Designate Chardonnays are held to exceptional standards: to carry the prestigious Hyde Vineyard name on the label, the wine must be made from 100% Hyde Vineyard fruit. Each bottling is personally vetted and approved by Larry Hyde himself, undergoing a three-year review process to ensure it truly reflects the character, quality, and integrity of the vineyard. This commitment guarantees that every Hyde Designate Chardonnay is an authentic expression of this iconic Napa site.

This past March, bud break in Sonoma’s famed vineyards marked the commencement of the region’s 200th harvest and a chance to celebrate all the factors and influences that turn the valley’s beautiful grape clusters into a bottled icon of excellence to be enjoyed for years to come.
Native Americans were the first viticulturists in Sonoma Valley. But, two hundred years ago, Father José Altimira, founder of the San Francisco Mission San Francisco Solano (Sonoma Mission), and Indigenous workers planted the first official vineyard with as many as 2,000 “Old World Mission” varietal grapevines to the North and East of the Mission in Sonoma Valley, California. Those vines yielded approximately 1,000 gallons of wine. At that time, the Mission grapes were primarily used as sacramental and table wine for the missionaries. The land where these original formal grape vines were planted is now part of Agoston Haraszthy’s Buena Vista Winery, and Gundlach Bundschu Winery.
Sonoma Valley’s 200th Harvest will celebrate the bicentennial of this historical event with the de facto governing body for winemaking in the region, the Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Association (SVVGA), kicking off the second season of a three-year celebration.
This year, The Year of the Vintner honors the hard work of talented winemakers to guide each grape from vineyard to glass. From nurturing the vines to crafting the wine, their work is at the heart of every bottle.
“Sonoma Valley is the birthplace of the California wine industry. The 200th Harvest gives us the opportunity to showcase the people who carry on that two-century tradition today and continue to produce award-winning vintages that showcase their unique perspective while highlighting the exceptional quality and variety of grapes and wine that are produced in this distinctive region.”
Robyn Sebastiani, Executive Director Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Alliance
2024: The Year of the Farmer – 2024’s celebration paid tribute to the backbone of Sonoma Valley: the dedicated farmers who cultivate our fertile lands and preserve our agricultural traditions. It celebrated the vibrant tapestry of farming culture that has shaped the region for generations.
2025: The Year of the Vintner – 2025’s celebration will raise a glass to the artisans behind Sonoma Valley’s world-renowned wines. From vine to bottle, it will honor the craftsmanship, passion, and innovation of the vintners, whose dedication continues to define the region’s vinicultural excellence.
2026: The Year of Community – 2026’s celebration will honor the heart and soul of Sonoma Valley: its people. From artisans and entrepreneurs to residents and visitors alike, the celebration will spotlight the diverse voices, stories, and experiences that embody the vibrant spirit of the Sonoma Valley community.
Starting in June with the Sonoma Spritz Soiree and continuing throughout the remainder of the summer, the SVVGA will host monthly celebrations throughout Sonoma Valley leading up to the signature 200th Harvest celebration in late August. Each and every event will mark the milestone of the first Sonoma Valley vintage.

“ We wanted to build something together … I always wanted a little flower shop –I’ve dreamed of it.”
– Sue Albano with Mike Hengehold
Last month, Sonoma’s vibrant Broadway corridor welcomed a touch of Parisian floral artistry with the arrival of the brand-new French Florist location. The 1,250-square -foot shop at 1270 Broadway marks an exciting new chapter for the nationally recognized brand — and a personal dream for local owners and life partners for the last 13 years, Mike Hengehold and Sue Albano.
Hengehld has an appreciation for the level of craft that goes into making something artisanal to be enjoyed by many. In addition to his background in e-commerce, Mike continues his family legacy of 40 years growing 10 acres of Pinot Noir grapes.
Sue is a musician who plays bass and sings in a classic rock band, Scarlet Letters, as well as ’70s funk band, Groove Incident. In addition to music and vibrant floral arrangements, Sue also creates leather bags and jewelry, is a massage therapist and fitness instructor. As an artist, Sue was drawn to the aesthetics of French
Florist. “Just like music, flowers bring joy to people’s lives. They lift spirits, and we want to share that with our community.”
French Florist, a Los Angeles-based franchise, has been family owned and caring about customers since 1978. It boasts vibrant, handcrafted arrangements including fresh flowers purchased directly from jajor farms in the United States, Canada, Holland, Ecuador, Columbia, Mexico, and more.
A Store Tailored to Sonoma
More than just a standard franchise outpost, the Sonoma shop is being customized to reflect local tastes and sensibilities. Hengehold and Albano aim to curate a design-forward space where both design-savvy and casual shoppers find floral inspiration.
The shop is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. closed Sundays. frenchflorist.com

Rich Frank and John Hansen, longtime friends and business partners of the late celebrity chef Michael Chiarello, are thrilled to announce their full ownership and management of the iconic Bottega Napa Valley. Since its inception in 2008, Bottega has been a beloved destination in the heart of Yountville, celebrated for its Italian-inspired cuisine with a distinctive California twist.
Under the leadership of Executive Chef Alex Espinoza, who was mentored by the legendary Chef Chiarello, Bottega continues to thrive as one of the region’s premier dining establishments. Chef Espinoza, who joined Bottega in 2021, brings a wealth of culinary expertise and a deep appreciation for the restaurant’s legacy. His passion for food and dedication to his craft began at an early age when his grandmother taught him how to make cheese on his family farm. His journey took him from the Culinary Institute of America to Tra Vigne Restaurant in St. Helena, where he learned from other culinary notables, including Chef Anthony “Nash” Cognetti and Chef Michael Reardon.
“We are excited to work alongside Chef Alex and the talented team at Bottega, many of whom have been with us since the beginning,” says Frank. “Together, we will honor the culinary legacy established by Chiarello while introducing new and exciting menu additions that reflect our commitment to quality and innovation.”
Bottega Napa Valley is renowned for its seasonal ingredients, house-made pastas and bold, rustic flavors, offering guests a memorable dining experience that blends old-world charm with contemporary Napa elegance. Whether for a casual lunch, a family dinner, or a special celebration, Bottega promises to deliver a taste of Italy that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.
As Frank and Hansen embark on this new chapter, they invite guests to join them in celebrating the rich culinary heritage of Bottega while looking forward to the future under Chef Espinoza’s creative vision.
Frank is the former president of Disney Studios and the founder of iconic Napa Valley winery, Frank Family Vineyards. Hansen is a longtime investor and general manager in consumer businesses, including a hospitality business in Rome.
“Italy has been a second home to me for decades, and Bottega has always authentically captured the heart and soul of Italian hospitality,” says Hansen. “Great food shared with family and friends is the goal at my restaurants in Rome and at this remarkably unique place in Yountville. I’m delighted to continue supporting the culinary experience that Chiarello so passionately built.”
Both Frank and Hansen have been partners in Bottega from the start. botteganapavalley.com

Lake County boasts the largest body of water in the entire state of California. This bodes well for viticulture that takes place in the southern half of the county, mostly around the fertile Clear Lake area. Although an inland lake, it is not far from the Pacific Ocean and the combination of volcanic soils and the lake’s maritime influence make Lake County a bountiful growing region for wine grapes and other crops.
Ancient volcanoes provide Lake County with its rich terroir and are also responsible for the ridges and hills formed by ancient lava flows. The topography is sculpted through the AVA and vineyards take advantage of hillsides, troughs and pockets with a variety of different slopes and aspects to take advantage of the prevailing weather patterns.
The wide array of soils in Lake County are mostly volcanic in origin, especially those surrounding Clear Lake. Gravel, sand, tephra and even pockets of heatretaining obsidian can be found in the areas near the lake and in the south of the county.
These shallow, mountainous soils are free-draining, producing low yields and reduced vigor as the lack of water forces vines to reach for water in the ground and creates small berries with highly concentrated flavors..
The Lake County AVA covers a total of 9400 acres of vineyards and, within it, we find the smaller AVAs of High Valley, Red Hills Lake County and Big Valley District in the eastern, western and southern shores of the lake, respectively. The Kelsey Bench in the northwest part of the Clear Lake AVA.
The county also covers the little-used Benmore Valley AVA on its western border and the single-winery Guenoc Valley AVA, just 10 miles north of Calistoga. The Lake County AVA covers a total of 9400 acres of vineyards.
Lake County lies in the rain shadow of the Mayacama mountains creating a warm and dry region. In the vineyards around Clear Lake, afternoon breezes help to cool the grapes, which extends the growing
season. Vineyard altitude also helps with this as well as much of the viticultural land in Lake County sits at 1300 feet above sea level or higher.
This contributes to a significant diurnal temperature variation, where warm days are followed by much colder nights, ensuring berries have a slower ripening period during which they can develop varietal character without sacrificing acidity. This altitude also increases the exposure grapes have to ultraviolet light in comparison to those at sea level, creating thicker skins with higher phenolics.
Vineyards were first planted here in the 1870s. By the early 1900s, the wines were internationally recognized for their excellence. However, much like the rest of California, Prohibition in the 1920s saw a majority of the vines ripped out in favor of other crops. The potential of the area was rediscovered during the American wine renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s. Now, Lake County enjoys a reputation for bright, concentrated red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Zinfandel, and fresh, aromatic whites made from Sauvignon Blanc. Lake County growers sell fruit to hundreds of other wineries, from Napa to Texas, and is considered a reliable source of these varieties.
