Frank Family Philanthropy Making An Impact Beyond the Vineyard

Combine the causes you care about with your life’s work and you can make a real and lasting impact for good. When Rich and Leslie Frank of Frank Family Vineyards made their passion for wine a primary focus, after careers in entertainment and broadcast, their newly found field brought them into contact with a whole different world of equally passionate people and causes. In 2018, their innate love for philanthropy intertwined with wine to create “Frank for a Cause,” Frank Family’s philanthropic avenue to contribute to the well-being of the Napa Valley community and beyond. Rich and Leslie annually select a different national charity to support, from health research to hunger relief, animal welfare to earth conservation, and this year’s beneficiary, 4ocean.

Creating “Frank for a Cause” was a natural outgrowth of their family backgrounds, which stressed a strong work ethic and a giving nature. The wine industry naturally and organically builds a sense of family. “Our community has been integral to the success of our winery,” says Leslie Frank. “We felt it was our privilege to be able to give back.”

Rich & Leslie Frank

To date, “Frank for a Cause” has supported eight national nonprofits and numerous local organizations including Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Humane Society, Feeding America, The James Beard Foundation’s “Open for Good” campaign, K9s For Warriors, Autism Speaks, The Arbor Day Foundation, and most recently, 4ocean.

“ We consider ourselves very lucky to have a loyal fan base, whose support has been instrumental in the success of Frank for a Cause,” says Leslie. The couples’ unique position in the wine business has enabled them to cultivate memories, experiences and connections with people all over the world for the last three decades.

Helping the Ecosystem Recover from Wildfires

Witnessing the destructive wildfires in Napa Valley since 2017 inspired them to honor the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day in 2022 by pledging to plant trees where they were needed most. A reforestation project that resonated with them was in the Willamette National Forest, which spans more than 1.6 million acres of western Oregon. “In September 2020, the Holiday Farm Fire burned more than 170,000 acres of this forest within the McKenzie River Valley, leaving the area in dire need of replanting,” says Leslie. To help this vital ecosystem recover, Frank Family supported the planting of six trees per every bottle of their Blanc de Blancs sold in 2022.

Providing K9s for Warriors

Community engagement from the Frank Family fan base is key to each campaign’s success. Their partnership with K9s For Warriors, the nation’s largest provider of trained service dogs for military veterans, was so successful that they extended the program, sponsoring their very own four-legged hero in March 2024. Says Leslie, “We thought it would be fun to let Frank Family’s Instagram followers help name him: they chose Frankie. Through this sponsorship, Frankie received the veterinary care, equipment, and training needed to become a lifesaving service dog for a veteran with PTSD.”

4ocean – Creating Waves of Change

The current partnership with 4ocean began in July 2024, and proved so popular, they extended it through July 2026. Pivotal to outreach and success are the community cleanups they are sponsoring across the country. “From coastal beaches to inland waterways, we’re bringing our fans together to create a wave of change,” notes Leslie. “None of this would be possible without their support!”

The Franks believe in personally showing up to do the work. Leslie and Rich met 4ocean CEO and Co-Founder Alex Schulze, as well as Director of Cleanups, Tony Ernst, at a partner cleanup in Boca Raton, Florida in

September 2024. They and their team spent two days with the 4ocean crew as they cleaned several hundred pounds of trash from beaches and coastline to prevent debris and microplastics from entering the water and harming nearby marine life habitats.

“As vintners, Rich and I believe that caring for our land is our deepest honor and most important work,” says Leslie. “With every drop we drink, we are connected to the ocean – it regulates our climate, supplies food, creates jobs and drives economic growth. Witnessing this organization’s impact firsthand was a great reminder of the significance of our partnership and the difference it will continue to make for our planet.”

Upcoming 4ocean cleanup dates:

May 31: Chicago, Illinois

June 7: Newport, Rhode Island

August 7: Hamptons, New York

August 9: Boston, Massachusetts

August 21: Seattle, Washington

September 27: Lake Tahoe, Nevada

The Franks are conscientious about what is going on in the broader community, and are eager to respond to events like the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. That year, they partnered with The James Beard Foundation’s “Open for Good Campaign” to provide critical support and resources to help independent restaurants remain a vital part of their communities. “We recognize the significant role that sommeliers, chefs, and restaurants play in the industry we value so deeply,” says Leslie. “We felt the effect that the pandemic brought upon everyone and wanted to do our small, but impactful, part to help.”

LIKE NO ONE’S WATCHING

LEDSON WINERY & VINEYARDS

Lessons in Resilience from Fifth-Generation Steward Steve Ledson

Surveying the land his family has cultivated since 1860, Steve Ledson stands not with apprehension, but with resolve. To him, Ledson Winery is more than a vineyard – it is a living chronicle of five generations shaped by the soil, weathered by time, and strengthened by perseverance.

The winery’s striking, castle-like edifice rises from the heart of Sonoma Valley, a modern beacon with roots that run centuries deep. What began as humble toil through droughts, downturns, and shifting tides of history has become a testament to endurance. The values that built Ledson Winery –hard work, adaptability, and reverence for the land – remain its foundation today.

As the wine industry navigates yet another era of disruption, Steve reflects on legacy – not only how to sustain it, but how to pass it on with integrity.

“The wine business is changing,” Steve says, with a steady voice born of experience.

“You need to take a hard look at everything. Where is your money going? Where is it coming from? You’ve got to simplify without sacrificing quality.”

Rooted in Sonoma, Forged in Fire

The Ledson lineage is deeply entwined with Sonoma’s agricultural story. Through the Great Depression, through Prohibition – when the family legally shipped grapes across the country to clandestine winemakers – the Ledsons endured. Their history is not just survival; it’s a blueprint for how to adapt with intelligence and dignity. So, when Steve makes the difficult choice to remove 50 acres of vines, it is not a retreat – it’s a recalibration.

“Too remote, too costly, not sustainable,” he says of the vineyards they let go. “Up in Mendocino, we were losing to the bears – literally. They tore through fences, destroyed the trellises. It no longer made sense.”

With grape surpluses and a saturated market, Steve knows that success lies not in expansion for its own sake, but in strategic preservation – protecting

what holds value and pruning what does not.

Wisdom in Action

Ledson’s philosophy is shaped by pragmatism and people. The winery crafts wines from $28 everyday bottles to $250 reserve vintages – but every label shares the same intent: authenticity and excellence.

“We make a wine for every palate and every wallet,” Steve says. “Especially for younger wine drinkers – we want them to find their first wine with us and grow with us.”

At a recent estate gathering, 350 wine club members – each with over a decade of loyalty – filled the grounds. That kind of devotion is not accidental. It’s nurtured, one visit at a time, with grace and gratitude.

“When someone chooses to spend their time and money with us,” Steve says, “they deserve to be treated with dignity. Just like you’d hope to be treated on your own travels.”

With family working alongside him – and a daughter who declares she wants “to be Dad” when she grows up – the future feels personal and promising.

Unused land is never wasted. Some fields lie fallow to rest, others are seeded with hay or opened to grazing cattle. Every acre has a purpose. Every change is part of a broader, enduring rhythm.

“Sometimes,” Steve recalls his father’s wisdom, “you don’t ask, ‘Why is this happening?’ You ask, ‘What is this here to teach me?’”

Legacy in Motion

In times of upheaval, many focus on what’s slipping away. Steve Ledson chooses to focus on what holds fast. He’s not chasing trends, nor is he merely reacting. He is stewarding a legacy – refining it, strengthening it, and preparing it to outlast this moment and many more to come.

Because for Steve, the story of Ledson Winery is not just about making wine. It’s about honoring the past while preparing the soil for generations yet to come.

Live & Well
Los Agaves
Zuniga Optical

Tucked along the Napa River, just a short stroll from downtown’s tasting rooms and boutique hotels, the Riverfront Napa complex offers a sophisticated but quietly understated counterpart to the valley’s vineyard-lined mainstays. This mixed-use stretch isn’t just a stop for out-of-town browsers — it’s a curated blend of elevated retail and dining that reflects Napa’s layered identity: part wine capital, part creative hub, and part small-town Main Street.

“When my grandfather Mike DeSimoni designed this space, he drew from the classic beauty of European plazas,” says property manager Bianca Simms. “He believed Napa deserved a riverfront destination that honored both its heritage and future.” His vision holds. The architecture is restrained but thoughtful, with wide promenades, second-story terraces, and a sense of calm that invites lingering — not just shopping.

While wine may not be poured in every storefront, the influence of wine country is unmistakable. There’s attention to detail, craftsmanship, and a certain lifestyle ethos that mirrors the values of the region’s winemakers and growers. Riverfront Napa isn’t a shopping mall — it’s a cultivated experience where every element feels intentional.

Shoppers begin to notice this at Liv & Well, where wellness meets aesthetic design. The curated collection of beauty products, home goods, and clean lifestyle items feels intentionally chosen, the way a winemaker might select barrels. A few doors down, Helen Lyall is an elegant women's clothing store offering a curated collection of chic, high-quality fashion pieces. Scott Lyall is a sophisticated men’s clothing store known for its sharp, contemporary designs and impeccable tailoring.

For younger or more trend-conscious shoppers, Shoppe Twelve serves up a vibrant dose of California-casual style with a youthful Napa twist. At Zuniga Optical, precision and design meet practicality — think bespoke frames that wouldn’t look out of place at a Rutherford dinner party. Meanwhile, Sidestreet Cigar is an exclusive club, offering a sophisticated retreat for cigar enthusiasts to enjoy premium smokes, fine spirits, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Art lovers gravitate toward Arena Galleries & Gardens, a space that blends fine art with botanical styling, featuring sculpture, painting, and native flora in one flowing, gallery-style environment. It’s Napa’s creative streak in bloom.

Riverfront Napa isn’t a shopping mall — it’s a cultivated experience where every element feels intentional.

But the Riverfront isn’t just about the storefronts — it’s also a destination for serious food and wine. Morimoto Napa still anchors the complex with its ironchef pedigree and riverfront views, offering high-design Japanese plates and a well-structured wine list to match. Morimoto Asia offers a broader panAsian menu with influences from Japa, China and other Far Eastern countries.

Just steps away, Entrecot Napa is a vibrant Argentine restaurant where guests can savor traditional wood-fired steaks, empanadas, and other authentic South American dishes, all served in a cozy, rustic setting.

Los Agaves offers elevated Mexican cuisine in a polished, modern setting. The molés are layered and deep, the seafood fresh, and the wine list refreshingly local. For fans of raw bar classics and crisp white wines, Waterfront Seafood Grill is a go-to for oysters, grilled fish, and river views that feel a world away from Highway 29.

Even the coffee is thoughtful: Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company provides a caffeine fix that doesn’t cut corners, serving single-origin and local blends that fuel early risers, post-brunch wanderers, and winemakers alike.

Riverfront Napa isn’t sprawling, and it’s not trying to be. Its strength is in its curation — a place where quality retail and elevated food meet in a walkable, riverside setting. For wine country visitors seeking a quieter, more design-forward complement to the tasting trail, this is where Napa lets its sense of style and substance shine.

When You Go

Riverfront Napa is located along Main Street between Fifth and First streets. Free parking is available in the adjacent garage. Shops typically open by 10 a.m., with restaurants extending into the evening. Ideal for a walkable afternoon of wine, food, and upscale browsing.

Knives Out, Napa Valley

In an age of mass production and machine-made sameness, handcrafted anything is a welcome reprieve. And handcrafted knives, well … that’s a luxury within which form meets function in the sharpest of ways.

At New West KnifeWorks, the boutique knife retailer with a handful of outposts from Jackson Hole to California, including one in St. Helena, Napa Valley, the knife collection is as bold and beautiful as the steel and the artistry.

If you have ever used a quality blade then you know that all knives are not created equal and the team at New West KnifeWorks is passionate about helping patrons discover their craftsmanship. Your kitchen prowess, or flare, will never be the same.

“Our steel, the handle material, everything, down to the rivets, come from right in here in the U.S. We are committed to crafting the best knives, made in America.”

Established over 25 years ago by Corey Milligan, a modest, selfproclaimed “maker,” New West KnifeWorks was born as a hobby project that took shape in a workspace inside the founder’s small apartment in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The hand-crafted knives proved so popular for this artisan, who began selling his wares at the nation’s top arts and craft shows and festivals, the first retail location for the knife maker was soon founded in Jackson.

Fast forward to today, in addition to the Jackson Hole and St. Helena spots, plus an online option, New West has four other brick and mortar locations, including Big Sky, Montana; Denver, Colorado; Park City, Utah, and a small shop in Victor, Idaho which is home to the 10,000-square-foot New West production facility.

The company takes great pride in creating a product that is 100% made in the United States. It even sources 100% of its materials from within the United States.

While it now produces knives on a much larger scale to meet a need beyond grassroots fairs and festivals, New West KnifeWorks still adheres to the principles that started it all – each knife is finished by hand under the watchful workmanship of an individual maker who takes a single knife

through the entire process from beginning to end.

Whether looking for an exquisite bundle of professional grade kitchen knives or a unique gift, the retail location in St. Helena will certainly surprise and delight both expert and novice.

The recently renovated shop is well lit and organized, with the front half of the store boasting the kitchen knife collection and the back half catering to rough and rugged lifestyle with a collection for hunter and sportsman.

In the Home

For the home chef, shoppers will find an impressive array of beautifully crafted knives from paring to santoku and bread to deli, all of which feature high-grade S35VN steel. If you want to geek out, this type of particle metallurgy steel provides New West knife makers with just the right ratio of carbide distribution allowing for not only excellent strength but also incredible edge retention.

If the steel was not an attractive enough draw, certainly the gorgeously formed color handles will do the trick. Made of a laminated fiberglass composite called G10, the colorful undulating patterns on each knife handle resemble Murano glass. Who

can resist custom-building a top grade knife set that meticulously doubles as kitchen art displayed on a handmade magnetic knife block? Added bonus … all New West KnifeWorks knives come with lifetime free sharpening and can be custom engraved onsite.

In the Wild

For game hunters and outdoorsy personalities, the St. Helena establishment features a curated collection of hunting knives and gear, including custom-made pieces that feature exotic handles such as water buffalo horn and elk antler.

If cool outdoor gear wasn’t enough of a draw, shoppers can indulge in a bit of wild gaming right within the store. Tomahawks, anyone? Yup, you can try your hand at tomahawk throwing, right in the middle of downtown St. Helena. Highly patient and ultraprofessional staff will draw a steel curtain creating a safe alley within the store and guide adventurous guests in a tomahawk throwing session. Definitely the ultimate way to try it before you buy it.

The next time you visit St. Helena or – for that matter, Denver, Park City, Jackson Hole, or Big Sky – add New West KnifeWorks to your list of must-see spots. Who knew knives could so fun.

GLORIA FERRER ESTATE VINEYARDS

100%

Organic Certification Achieved

Gloria Ferrer, an icon of Sonoma Valley and the first sparkling winery in Carneros, recently announced all 338 acres of its estate vineyards and olives have received organic certification from California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).

“Achieving CCOF organic certification is a defining moment for Gloria Ferrer and a powerful affirmation of our long-term vision. It reflects not only our deep respect for the land but our commitment to leading the future of premium sparkling wine through responsible, regenerative farming,” says Melanie Schafer, General Manager at Gloria Ferrer. “This milestone is the result of years of dedication from our vineyard team and a continued investment in innovation that ensures we protect what matters most – our environment, our community, and the integrity of our wines.”

In the Vineyards

The farming efforts at Gloria Ferrer focus on biodiversity with natural systems in mind. This includes utilizing sheep grazing, chemical-free pest and disease control, native species habitat improvement, and water smart irrigation techniques. This shift in farming mentality allows the team to better manage and treat the vines individually to produce the highest quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

To further support the organic vision for the estate, Gloria Ferrer is in the process of diligently replanting the estate vineyards. The current replanting plan is

based on matching soil types with ideal clones and rootstocks, as well as improving vineyard design to facilitate organic management practices. Throughout this process, the team has utilized research conducted onsite pertaining to the Gloria Ferrer champagne clones in partnership with UC Davis.

Gloria Ferrer’s dedication to sustainability and environmental protection was refocused in 2017 with its certification from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) for both the estate vineyards and winery based on efforts in water conservation, energy efficiency, waste management and soil health. Most recently in 2024, Gloria Ferrer’s work in the vineyards and commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 was recognized by the CSWA with a Green Medal.

“It is incredibly important to all of us at Gloria Ferrer to receive this certification” says Brad Kurtz, Vineyard Director at Gloria Ferrer. “This certification is the culmination of five years of hard work and dedication and demonstrates our commitment to the highest standard of farming. Gloria Ferrer is now the largest certified organic vineyard within Sonoma County and the only sparkling winery in California with 100% certified organic estate vineyards. We remain focused on producing the best possible sparkling wines and continuously improving our estate vineyards.”

The estate’s pioneering history – founded in 1982 by the Ferrer family of Catalonia, Spain – has made Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards a leader in California sparkling wine for over 40 years.

Auction Napa Valley 2025

A Celebration of Wine, Food and Philanthropy

Celebrating 45 Years of Giving Back to the Community

Auction Napa Valley 2025 will take place June 6-7, celebrating 45 years of giving back to Napa Valley’s community. This iconic event is one of the most sought-after gatherings for wine enthusiasts and philanthropists worldwide and takes place in one of the most stunning destinations in the world. The auction offers rare opportunities to taste and purchase extraordinary wines and experiences while supporting the health and well-being of Napa’s youth.

Auction Napa Valley’s honorary chairs, Robin and Michelle Baggett, who are deeply committed to Napa Valley philanthropy, shared, “We are excited to celebrate 45 years of giving back to our community through this world-renowned wine event, which supports the health, wellness and education of children and teens in Napa Valley. Our goal is not only to build a strong foundation for youth to succeed, but also to support the next generation of leaders in agriculture, tourism and other fields vital to Napa Valley’s future.”

Guests can choose from two ticket packages: the Napa Valley Barrel Auction ticket, granting access to the highly anticipated barrel auction, or the ultimate all-access weekend experience, which unlocks the full spectrum of events, including the barrel auction, intimate winemaker dinners and unique winery visits leading up to the grand dinner and live auction celebration.

Napa Valley Barrel Auction, Friday, June 6

The weekend kicks off with the Napa Valley Barrel Auction, where guests will be among the first to taste and purchase wines from the highly praised 2023 vintage — being called the “vintage of a lifetime.”

Tasting with winemakers straight from the barrel is a unique and exciting experience and provides guests with firsthand knowledge of the wine’s story and craftsmanship. Barrel tastings are not widely available to the public, making this event a rare opportunity to taste wines that aren’t yet on the market, even before they become available to collectors and connoisseurs.

With more than 100 top Napa Valley wineries represented, the auction offers an unrivaled opportunity to secure Napa Valley’s sought-after 2023 vintage wines. The iconic Louis M. Martini Winery will host this year’s barrel auction, providing a beautiful backdrop as guests bid on and collect incredible wines. The barrel auction is also a chance to support Napa’s children and teens, making participation that much more meaningful.

Following the barrel auction, guests will be treated to an intimate Vintner-Hosted Dinner, featuring exquisite meals paired with exceptional, cellar-worthy wines. These exclusive dinners, available only through the all-access ticket package, offer an unforgettable evening with Napa’s renowned winemakers at estates such as Cathiard Vineyard, Colgin Cellars, Diamond Creek Vineyards, Dana Estates, Momento Mori, Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery, Darioush, Grgich Hills Estate, Kenzo Estate, Mayacamas Vineyards, Neal Family Vineyards, Opus One and St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery.

Dinner and Live Auction, Saturday, June 7

The following day, guests will take part in Napa Valley Your Way, offering tailor-made winery experiences that showcase the region’s unique wine culture. From classic cars paired with Cabernet at Boeschen Vineyards to a special tour of Napa Valley’s first regenerative organic vineyard with Neal Family Vineyards, these exclusive visits offer an insider’s look into Napa Valley’s wine culture and heritage.

The weekend culminates with the grand Dinner & Live Auction Celebration, held at the newly reimagined and stunningly renovated Chandon winery. This highly anticipated event brings together guests for an evening of exceptional gourmet cuisine, rare wines and live auction excitement. Michelin three-starred chef Christopher Kostow of The Charter Oak will prepare the Saturday night dinner, delivering a culinary experience that perfectly complements Napa Valley’s renowned winemaking excellence.

As the evening progresses, guests will have the chance to bid on incredible experiences in the thrilling live auction, with the focus on giving back to Napa Valley’s youth. Auction lots will include rare wines, curated Napa Valley experiences, international travel and special access to Napa Valley's winemaking community.

Tickets for Auction Napa Valley can be purchased at collectivenapavalley.org.

Those unable to attend in person can still participate in the barrel and live auctions from anywhere in the world through Sothebys.com.

Jumping into Summer in Lake County

Known for its gorgeous Clear Lake and adorable small villages, once you get there, it is best to spend some time, maybe a couple days.

Wineries abound without the Napa crowds … and prices. Check out Six Sigma Ranch and Winery and their Stage Coach Stop tasting room – a cozy cabin that was

once a true stagecoach stop. Not only is the Six Sigma Ranch traversed by hiking and mountain biking trails, but they have both picnic areas and a spot for “ranch stays” if you bring your RV or trailer.

But, knocking it out of the park is the cutting edge Huttopia glamping park at Six Sigma. Based on a European concept and built around a pool and cafe for a full resort experience, Huttopia is so popular, it is expanding this year to accommodate even more vacationers who drink wine.

Another popular wine stop is The Mercantile by Shannon Ranch in Kelseyville. Longtime growers and winemakers in Lake County, the Shannons introduced The Mercantile concept as a place to sample their wines, listen to live music, purchase food and goodies while also enjoying an array of food offerings from popular food trucks. This place is happening!

Other popular wine stops include Langtry Farms , started by a silent film star named Lily Langtry, Fults Family Vineyards where a 4x4 takes you high up into the vineyards to sample gorgeous wines with a view to match. Wild Diamond Wines in Hidden Valley Lake touts crafting “premium wines with a touch of wild” in the natural and organic winemaking.

Down the road from Wild Diamond, stop for a pizza or burger at the Greenview Bar and Grill where pizza dough is made fresh daily and the kitchen strives to use only the freshest local ingredients. The food here is outstanding as is the ambiance.

Have a group that needs a retreat or possibly a family reunion where everyone could use a bit of wellness and quiet? Mandala Springs and Wellness Retreat is a place to reset. From forest bathing to yoga, healthy, fresh meals and a place to jump in some hot springs … then do it all again, maybe with a glass of local wine, before heading back to reality. Mandala organizes retreat and events throughout the year but will gladly help you organize your own custom wellness experience.

When in Kelseyville, you have to eat at Saw Shop Public House! Their motto is “Welcome to our house—everyone is local, and locals are family.” The food here will blow you away. It’s good, fun, tasty and friendly. On The Waterfront Restaurant in Lakeport is a modern eatery with a globally inspired, progressive menu of original dishes meant to be shared. The fresh and ever-changing seasonal menu is designed to tantalize your senses with a fusion of flavors, complemented by wine, to deliver an unforgettable experience. At the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake, the atmosphere exudes a warm, inviting charm that makes it a local favorite. The rustic wooden interiors, adorned with vintage photographs and eclectic memorabilia, create a nostalgic ambiance that perfectly complements the hearty comfort food on the menu. Another local favorite is Red's at the Skyroom in Lakeport. Relax and watch the small planes fly in and out while enjoying traditional comfort food like fish and chips, specialty burgers, fried chicken sandwich or Uncle Gary’s Pot Roast Sandwich. But the twist? Oysters and sushi! Greenview Restaurant is another delicious option, located on the Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course.
