HUNTER WINES TAKE ON THE WORLD

If you’ve always known that Hunter Valley wine varieties stack up to those from other Australian regions and indeed the rest of the world, here’s your chance to put your taste buds (and our wines!) to the test and find out if you’re right.

Visit First Creek Wines throughout May for a relaxed and informative introduction to the wider world of wine.

Focusing on the varieties the Hunter does best, your instructor will put them into context with some other excellent Australian and French examples.

BEANIE FESTIVAL Gives way to major exhibi on

Come and enjoy Australia’s most popular collec on of beanies from the Alice Springs Beanie Fes val in Colours of the Country II, at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery un l 12th May. This colourful exhibi on from Artback NT encapsulates the whimsical essence of the Beanie Fes val. The collec on also highlights the works produced by Indigenous ar sts from the Central Desert region who are regular collaborators in this cross‐cultural event.

Colours of the Country II demonstrates the growth of the beanie as an art form over the years and the imagina on, crea vity and fine cra smanship involved in each piece.

From 16th May the gallery will present Familiar/Unfamiliar, an exhibi on of ‘one‐off’ prints by 45 of Australia’s most influen al printmakers.

These ar sts were especially commissioned by the Print Council of Australia to produce works in celebra on of the Coucil’s 45th anniversary.

The resul ng exhibi on is a stunning display of what would seem to be every mechanical and digital prin ng technique known to mankind. There are etchings, aqua nts, mezo nts and monotypes; woodblocks, lithographs and linocuts, drypoint and collographs, screenprints and inkjets.

The list seems endless but the variety of ideas explored even exceeds the techniques employed.

This is an exhibi on by masters of their cra and con nues the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery’s presenta on of first class exhibi ons to our regional audience that rarely are seen outside the major metropolitan ci es.

THE LOVEDALE LONG LUNCH Gourmands take note that on the 18th and 19th of May, Lovedale will once again be con nuing the tradi on of bringing endless delight to lovers of wine and food by hos ng the annual, award‐ winning Lovedale Long Lunch.

The Lovedale Long Lunch is celebra ng its 20th Anniversary in May, 2013 and no doubt there are fun and exci ng mes ahead.

Held amongst the picturesque vineyards of Lovedale, this annual event was started in 1994 to promote Lovedale as a premium wine producing area and tourist a rac on. Now in its 20th year, the Lovedale Long Lunch has done just that, a rac ng large and enthusias c crowds eager to savour the excellent food and wine from the area.

This years event on May 18 and 19 is expected to a ract more than 20,000 people to seven Lovedale wineries that include Allandale Winery, Tatler Wines, Gartelmann Hunter Valley, Wandin Hunter Valley, Sal re Wines, Sandalyn Estate and Emmas Co age Vineyard.

The concept is as simple as it is pleasurable, the Lovedale Long Lunch is a progressive‐type lunch involving seven bou que wineries and a selec on of the regions finest restaurants and live entertainment. Long Lunch‐goers then get to wine and dine their way around the par cipa ng wineries over the weekend enjoying a glass of wine, gourmet food and fabulous music and art which add to the total indulgence of the senses.

Event organisers are predic ng this year’s event to be the finest yet, combining excitement with a fresh emphasis on being a sophis cated and stylish day out for the genuine food and wine lover.

FACTS about  

LONG LUNCHING...

 It is unlikely that you will be able to see all seven wineries

in one day. The organisers suggest you check out what each of the wineries have to offer and pick your favourite 3 or 4.

Then you can ‘hop’ from one to the next sampling fantas c food and wine along the way.

Due to strict licensing regula ons every person must purchase a package to gain entry to the event.

Bus groups larger than 20 people must pre‐book. This helps the organisers to minimise queues and make sure there is enough space for everyone to park.

Small groups or individuals may purchase entry packages on the day at their first stop. Addi onal meal, dessert and wine tas ng tokens will be available for purchase on the day.

ng glass at the entry gate to any winery on Sunday to be issued with a Sunday wristband at no extra cost, allowing you entry to all seven venues.

The Lovedale Long Lunch is recommended for mature audiences, however anyone is welcome to a end. Strict RSA guidelines will be in place and no alcohol will be served to persons under the age of 18 years.

No BYO food will be permi ed to the event. Each venue will have a gluten free and vegetarian op on. If you have any other specific dietary requirements or are bringing young children, contact the organisers prior to the event to make arrangements.

What should I bring? Camera, an empty water bo le that you can fill inside, sun protec on, raincoat, your ckets, photo ID, money, comfortable shoes that are suitable for grass and dirt and a safe way home at the end of the day.

Remember anything that you do bring is your responsibility!

What shouldn’t I bring? Inappropriate clothing and uniforms designa ng emergency services, bare feet, pets, food, drinks, weapons or illicit drugs.

Bag checks will be performed at the entry to each venue and confiscated items will not be returned.

As usual, it doesn’t ma er where you start or finish as ''Long Lunchers'' can design their own progressive lunch according to their tastes in food, wine, music and views.

Tickets for the Lovedale Long Lunch start from $65. Packages are available for Saturday and Sunday which include entry, ckets for main meals, dessert or cheese plates, a tas ng glass and wine tas ng tokens.

Packages can also be purchased from any of the par cipa ng wineries on the day. As an added bonus for Long Lunchers this year ‐ the Saturday entry packages will include re‐admission on Sunday, so patrons can gear up for an en re weekend of fine wine, gourmet food and live entertainment.

What’s bubbling….

IN THE BREWERY With well over 100 microbreweries do ng the landscape from coast to coast with more opening every month and with specialty beer bars and bo le shops on the rise with some offering as many as 1,000 different varie es from all over the world ‐ there is li le doubt that Australia’s beer scene is one of the most exci ng in the world...

Australia’s beer industry is going through a renaissance experienced by the wine industry just over 20 years ago ‐ with an increasing number of microbreweries fast emerging to sa sfy the beer drinker's thirst for new, innova ve and interes ng beers. Many of these microbreweries have also opened in popular tourist areas, such as the wine regions, providing an alterna ve to wineries and supplying to niche local markets.

This India Pale Ale (IPA) style has an English heritage steeped in tradi on and much myth as well as an added new world twist:

In the 18th century the English were the colonial masters of the world and the original IPA was shipped from England to quench the thirst of a hot and sweaty army serving in India. The sea voyage, las ng many months, wreaked havoc on ordinary beers, but a brewer called George Hodgson The Hunter Beer Company is one such brewery. As the Hunter Valley's solved this problem by brewing a more alcoholic brew and adding extra first established microbrewery, it is a true beer haven ‐ situated right here hops to the beer. The alcohol and the hops acted as preserva ves to keep in Wine Country and with a reputa on for brewing really exci ng beers as the beer in be er shape. MASTERPIECE Setsuko Ogishi , owner and resident artist at Ogishi Craft Centre, is one of very few women glassblowers in Australia and her work continues to grow in demand as it gains national and international recognition.

Born in Japan, Setsuko’s glass career started after her arrival in Australia, where she trained in the glass workshop of the renowned Jam Factory Craft Centre in Adelaide from 1982 to 1985.

Setsuko then opened her first studio in 1987 in Wollombi, New South Wales, before moving to Wilderness Rd in Lovedale in 1999 which is now one of only a few glassblowing studios in Australia, and the only one in the Hunter Valley which is open to the public.

Visitors are welcome to visit and see a real glass artist's studio and browse through the gallery. Moscato

Moscato is a light, spritzig wine style which enjoys a significant following and is capturing imagina ons and palates around the world amongst both novice wine drinkers and seasoned wine enthusiasts who enjoy a lighter‐styled wine with brunch, dessert or on its own as an aperi f. This style of wine, originally from Italy, has become increasingly popular in Australia over the last couple of years and is a perfect accompaniment to many dessert dishes and cheese pla ers. The appeal of these wines is that they are very refreshing. The natural acidity of the wine is offset by the sweetness, but they are not overwhelmingly sweet.

Moscato is the Italian word for 'Muscat', which refers to both the wine style and range of muscat flavoured grapes used to make the highly flavoured wines which can be produced as s ll or sparkling Moscato wines. Moscato can be made with any of the several varie es of Muscat grapes, especially Muscat a Pe t Grains. The grapes range in colour from white to almost black and have a definite sweet and floral aroma with a musky and sweet flavour.

Zibibbo is the pink version of Moscato.

This unique wine is o en labeled simply as 'Moscato' (or 'Moscato d'As ' if it originates from Italy's Northwest region of Piedemont) and is known for its surprising perfume‐like fragrance, low alcohol content, light‐bodied, semi‐ sparkling, frizzante character and fruit filled profile. The aromas are stunning ‐ with hints of orange blossom, honeysuckle, almonds, ginger and fruit dominated by citrus tones and ripe peach. The flavours of Moscato wine are extraordinarily fruit‐filled and the delicate cascade of bubbles and sweet surprise come together to win over many unsuspec ng palates.

Moscato wines are intended to be consumed when young and vibrant (within two years of the vintage), so when it comes to food pairings a well chilled Moscato goes well with apple desserts, fresh berries, summer salads, meringue pies, hazelnut desserts and lemon‐poppy cakes. Cheese pla ers, charcuterie or an pasto plates are also perfect pairings for Moscato wines.

Due to its versa lity, coupled with its defini ve balance of sweet and acidity, and lower alcohol, Moscato wines are also the perfect and fashionable accompaniment to a brunch‐ me meal.

Served alone, it is one of the most refreshing wines in the world, and one would be hard pressed to find something be er on a warm day. With it's unique palate full of flavour and a style that is popular all over the world, Moscato wines are perfectly suited to that fun and fes ve occasion. Cellar Door May is typically the beginning of pruning ‐ when each vineyard is pruned to establish the right amount and quality of wood for the coming year.

Pruning removes the woody growth of the past season and sets the vine up for the coming cycle to begin. Even at this stage the yield is being established as the number of shoots are set in the pruning phase. Here are some of the latest happenings on the local Wine Scene.

A pleasing 2013 Vintage: Hunter Valley vignerons are reportedly excited about the 2103 Vintage ‐ with many describing 2013 as a standout vintage with the dry lead up to harvest affec ng yields, but not quality. The white wines are expected to be of an especially high standard this vintage as they were harvested before the rains set in.

Krinklewood's 7th Annual Biodynamic Workshop to be held at Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard in Broke on 25 May 2013 focuses on how to bring fer lity and balance to the soil, grow healthier plants and healthier produce. Sharing a wealth of knowledge and experience on biodynamics, the event will be led by Hamish Mackay who has 35 years experience and John Priestley who is 3rd genera on organic farmer and 50 years experience in Biodynamics. Top Drop: China has become increasingly important to producers, who can generate higher profit from sales there than in tradi onal and larger markets in the United Kingdom and the United States. As a result more wine exporters are targe ng the top end of the Chinese market as its demand for lower‐quality product drops away. The number of wine exporters in Australia increased by 10 per cent to 1395, with more than 900 ac ve in China. Importantly, the value of wine sold to China con nues to strengthen, gaining 18 per cent to $5.85 per litre. This compares with $3.14 per litre in 2011, reflec ng higher sales of cheaper bulk wine, which were o en used in Chinese wine labels.

South African Scholarship winner to par cipate in the vintage programme of leading Australian wine producer ‐ Brokenwood. Salvester van Rooyen won South Africa’s Dombeya Scholarship in February 2013 ‐ an award established in 2007 to foster the wine careers of candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds. Salvester is a member of the winemaking team at Haskell Vineyards in Stellenbosch and is midway through a two‐ year part‐ me diploma course at Elsenberg Agricultural College. A er receiving his diploma he will join the Brokenwood team for six weeks during the 2014 Hunter vintage.

FOR MEZE DINING With her new Autumn Cypriot Meze menu, Donna Hollis, the Head Chef at the popular 'RidgeView Restaurant' in Pokolbin puts a contemporary spin on middle eastern food ‐ introducing diners to new and sophis cated dishes and a different way of ea ng while maintaining the fresh and vibrant flavours of the region. All matched with wines from RidgeView's own vineyards.

Meze (or mezze), is a word with its roots steeped in an quity, and originates from Turkey. Meze ‐ pronounced mez‐ah, are a selec on of small dishes, served hot or cold, spicy or savoury and are very common in Greece, Cyprus, the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. For many, the easiest comparison is tapas. Meze dishes vary by region, but in Lebanon and Cyprus, meze is a meal in its own right with olives, dips, pastes and yoghurt served first, followed by dishes with vegetables and eggs, then small meat or fish dishes and finally more substan al dishes such as whole fish or meat stews and grills.

RidgeView's Autumn Cypriot Meze menu is a 4 course banquet designed to be shared by 2 or more people with the first course serving up a selec on of Cypriot dips and house made breads accompanied by sauteed marinated olives.

This is followed by the second course consis ng of Hervey Bay Scallops with fresh green prawns deliciously sauteed in chilli, garlic and fresh lemon. Pork Ke edes (Greek meatballs) ‐ a classic Greek dish, is also served in a roasted tomato and aubergine puree and Greek Haloumi cheese topped with caramalised pears, pistachios and fresh oregano, garnished with finely sliced chiffonadde radicchio. This is accompanied by Greek style marinated and crumbed mushrooms served on a bed of grilled capsicum, wilted baby English spinach and labna drizzled with RidgeView chilli malt balsamic.

The third course is a tender 2 inch cut lamb loin chop and chicken souvla served on a tomato caraway puree with baked humara doused in a cinnamon bu er and accompanied with Greek salad and tzatziki. All meat is cooked on Cypriot grills with tradi onal Cypriot spices and fresh lemon.

The fourth course ‐ also known as ''Karythopita'' is a Greek walnut cake infused with cinnamon syrup and accompanied by honey roasted pineapple and Greek yoghurt. Just perfect with a 2011 RidgeView ''sweet tooth'' Late Harvest Viognier. “Kopiaste” – come, eat, enjoy!

Mark Benne recently joined award winning restaurant, Esca Bimbadgen as Head Chef and is already earning a reputa on for delivering tantalising new dishes with his new Autumn menu.

Mark joined Esca Bimbadgen from C Restaurant (at Caves Beachside) where he worked alongside talented Chef Jamie Ryan. It was also at C Restaurant that Mark developed his affec on for classical French cuisine with a modern twist.

Prior to this, Mark gained his interna onal culinary experience at the majes c Fairmont Chateau in Whistler, Canada. With 550 rooms, 80 kitchen staff, five food outlets and numerous func on rooms, The Fairmont Chateau, Whistler captured the essence of the ski resort’s vibrant lifestyle and food culture. It was at this stage of his career that Mark felt inspired to run his own successful kitchen.

“Mark is an incredibly talented chef, one that Esca Bimbadgen is extremely pleased to have onboard and his Autumn menu is certainly a knock out,” said General Manager, Rebecca Poynter.

Mark brings with him a clear promise of a gastronomic experience that guests won’t want to miss. His Autumn menu includes mouth watering crea ons such as roasted figs, smooth duck liver mousse with bacon jam, crisp skinned salmon with truffle polenta chips, and braised beef rump with pomme puree, brussels sprout hearts with horseradish braisage “This is a very exci ng opportunity for me as it’s my passion to explore unique ingredient matches, which Esca Bimbadgen has built its reputa on on,” says Mark.

When asked what his plans are for Esca Bimbadgen, Mark replies, “I plan on taking full advantage of the fresh vegetables and herbs that will be grown in the Esca garden and set to simply delight our guest’s senses. I am also chasing the coveted Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide chefs’ hat.

“Esca Bimbadgen shows a great deal of promise. The talented kitchen staff inspire me on a daily basis. I am extremely ambi ous and I intend to shake things up in the Hunter Valley.”
