A WORD FROM THE EDITORS

June–July

Welcome to the 200th issue of the Hunter Valley Magazine! When we first moved from Sydney to Wine Country 16 years ago, packing up our family and leaving our big corporate roles behind to embark on a tree change (literally – we bought an olive farm – but that’s a whole other story!), little did we know that we would go on to create a magazine that has become as much a part of life in Wine Country as the vines! Over the years we’ve worked with pretty much every winery and restaurant in the area, dedicated to helping local businesses connect with over 2 million visitors to the region each and every year. We’ve worked in some pretty strange places (including a site office in a horse paddock) and met some pretty tight deadlines. We’ve grown a magazine, a website, a subscriber newsletter and some pretty cool social media pages. But most importantly of all, we’ve made some amazing friendships within the Wine Country community and built a loyal readership along the way. We want to thank each and every one of you for being part of this journey and hope you will continue alongside us for the next 200 issues! The big chill has hit – and that can mean only one thing…. it’s Snow Time in the Garden! Also celebrating the significant milestone of 10

years, this event has become the Hunter’s most anticipated School Holidays event – so there’s plenty to get excited about. With a snow machine working overtime to pump out finer, more realistic snow in greater amounts than ever before, who needs an expensive trip to the snowfields when we’ve got heaps of the real thing right here in the Hunter Valley. Did we mention the bit where Mum and Dad can slot in a spot of fireside wine tasting while you’re here? Sounds like a definite win-win to us! Read more on page 12. This month in wine we look at two trends that have stemmed from healthy lifestyle choices to genuine changes in consumer drinking habits. Ahead of their time, Tamburlaine has been producing organic wines since well before it was trendy to do so (read more on page 20), while McGuigan and Tempus Two are leading the way in the NOLO market. And if you want to know what that is – you’ll need to turn to page 26 to find out! With Winter Warmers top of mind – in this issue (and indeed throughout winter) we highlight some of the best spots to enjoy a soul-warming dining experience designed to turn up the heat on your time in Wine Country. Rug up and...

Hi Jan! Can you please introduce yourselves and tell us what your association has been with the Handmade in the Hunter Markets? My wife Anna and I have been with Handmade in the Hunter Markets for nearly four years – running our stall - Beenatree Creations. My background has been in sales for the last 20 years, and Anna is a nurse/ midwife, which she’s done for over 25 years. We’ve lived and worked in the Hunter region during this time and absolutely love the area and the lifestyle. Can you tell us a little about the markets and what makes them unique? Since we started running our stall, we've done many markets, but we’ve only done Handmade in the Hunter full time for the last two years. It’s a special market because everything is handmade by the stall holders, and we don’t have several stall holders selling the same thing. It’s a ‘one off’ market. This means we are smaller than the others, but there is a great community feel to it that is sometimes lost in a larger market. All of the stall holders get along and know each other – it’s like a market family!

MEET THE MAKER

Meet The Makers (And New Owners!) The local community was saddened earlier this year by the passing of Handmade in the Hunter Markets founder Karen Rowe, who had dedicated more than ten years to creating and growing a local market that was not only unique but a firm favourite of both locals and visitors to the area. Determined to continue the legacy that Karen created, new market owners Jan and Anna Mikula bring years of stallholder experience and a can-do attitude to the table.

What made you decide to take the plunge from stallholders to market owners? Unfortunately, the previous owner Karen passed away in March this year, and the thought was that the markets would finish even though they have been running for over ten years. So we put our hand up to purchase the markets and take over running them. The purchase has just been finalised, and we are now the new owners. The market is so unique, and the stallholders are such a wonderful group that we wanted to make sure that something this special wasn’t lost. What are your plans for the markets going forward? Like most things, change can be a scary thing, but with hard work and the support of our amazing stall holders, we know that we can continue the work done by Karen and take steps to make it grow and the partnership with our hosts, Sobels Wines, is an integral part of that. They have provided a perfect place for visitors to come and see what our stallholders make. We look forward to the future and the challenges that will come.

Frosty Fun for Everyone SNOW TIME IN THE GARDEN

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

Winter has come! And for families all across the Hunter, this means just one thing - it’s Snow Time in the Garden. Every year since 2012 (excluding 2020), Hunter Valley Gardens has created the coolest family event, bringing the snow to our region and all the fun activities associated with this freezing, powdery delight. There’s no need to travel all the way to the NSW snowfields when Snow Time in the Garden is available on our doorstep, and nothing could be more beautiful than playing in the snow on one of our wintery sunny days with the children in your life. This year also marks the 10th Anniversary of what has become the Hunter’s most anticipated School Holidays event – so there’s plenty to get excited about.

yhv 12 | JUN-JUL 2022

Last year saw the introduction of a brand-new snowmaking machine that pumped out finer, more realistic snow in greater amounts than ever before. The snow was made by shaving ice for the Snow Play Zone in the past, but now the snow is as good as the real thing. And there will be heaps of it! The event runs from Saturday 25 June until Sunday 24 July and is a wonderful way to use your Dine and Discover vouchers (valid until 30 June 2022 – so get in quick!) Vouchers can be redeemed online (both Discover and Parent vouchers) and some of the food vendors will be accepting the Dine vouchers. Hunter Valley Gardens will be transformed into a magical ice adventure playground full of fun and frosty adventures for children of all ages. A perfect destination to celebrate Christmas in July with a snowy theme and frosty fun for all the family.

SNOW TIME ENTRY INCLUDES: ICE-SKATING RINK Spin round the ice on the Snow Time Ice Skating Rink. The extended Ice Rink with an allocated junior section gives skaters lots of room to glide around like a pro. With sessions lasting for 20 minutes and opening at 9:30am every day, the rink can hold more than 200 skaters at a time. Skating sessions can only be reserved on the day at the ticket booth outside the Ice-Skating marquee. If you don’t want to miss out, get there early and book in – get your skates on! Skating aids (Bobby Seals) will be available for hire for $5 each and ONLY for children six years and under. An adult must accompany children under five on the ice. ICE TOBOGGAN Experience the super-fast Ice Toboggan – once won’t be enough! So grab a tube and glide down the 45-metre ice slide; it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping. A firm family favourite, the Ice Toboggan is superfast and crazy fun. You have been warned! Children under four must be accompanied by an adult. SNOW PLAY ZONE Have some icy fun in the fantastic snow play area. Man-made snow makes this a must for kids who want to build snowmen, make a snow angel, or just get their fingers a little chilly. Perfect for everyone in the family, this specially designed space has been created to provide a realistic snow experience that is ideal for people who have never seen snow before. It’s recommended to wear weatherproof/waterproof clothing, including gloves, jackets, pants and shoes, especially for smaller children who will be sitting in the Snow Play Zone. It’s advisable to bring along an extra set of clothing and a towel.

In addition to Snow Time activities, there will be roaming entertainment, and a range of winter beverages and hearty winter food on sale to help keep you toasty and warm. As if that’s not enough, the Hunter Valley Gardens’ popular amusement rides will also be open and guaranteed to excite the kids – young and old. In addition to the all-time favourite Superslide (designed especially for thrill-seekers), other rides* include: FERRIS WHEEL This beautiful 25 metre high Ferris Wheel provides spectacular views of the surrounding gardens, wineries, mountains and countryside, something the whole family can enjoy on a sunny winter’s day. Children below 120cm in height must ride with an adult. SWING CHAIR The speedy Swing Chair will spin you around 11 metres off the ground. Feel the wind in your hair and revel in the carnival atmosphere. The Swing Chair will get your heart racing and is a favourite with the older kids. Please note: Children between 110cm-120cm must ride with an adult; those children 120cm in height and above may ride alone. VENETIAN CAROUSEL This beautiful traditional Venetian Carousel was built in Italy to the design of the Hunter Valley Gardens staff. It’s a firm family favourite harking back to a bygone era and the perfect backdrop for budding photographers. Please note: this ride is for children only. Children below 105cm in height must ride with an adult (who must stand next to the child). TWISTY TEACUPS The newest ride at the Gardens, the twisty, twirly Teacups, will have the kids spinning around in giant colourful teacups and squealing with delight. Join the tea party! Please note: not suitable for children younger than two years and under 95cm. Children between 95cm-120cm in height must ride with an adult; 120 cm and above may ride alone.

SNOW CAVE Don’t miss the giant Snow Cave filled with animatronic Arctic animals such as polar bears and penguins. The little ones in your life will be absolutely delighted by this magical winter wonderland.

Heights are checked at each individual ride, and access will be approved by the operator. Individual ride tokens are available for $5 each and bonus 6 pack for $25 in the event area at the Gardens. All of this energetic and icy fun will have everyone in the family craving yummy hot foods and drinks, and Hunter Valley Gardens does not disappoint in this regard. The Garden Terrace Café will be open, as well as several food stalls providing a hearty range of delicious food and beverage options to choose from. Or visit one of the well-established dining establishments in the nearby village, such as the Cellar Restaurant, Eden Grounds, Taste of the Country, éléments bar & dining or Gigi & Chix Bonbon. If pub fare is more your style, pop on over to Harrigan’s Bistro. Same day re-entry to Snow Time is allowed, so keep your tickets to show on re-entry. Hunter Valley Gardens Event Manager Amanda Andrews is expecting unprecedented numbers this year. “A lot of families return to this event every year. One of our most popular options is the annual family passes that are available for $259 for a family of four. This enables families to visit yearround and enjoy all our major events, including the Christmas Lights Spectacular,” said Amanda. “The Mega Creatures event last school holidays was a huge success, so we expect Snow Time to be bigger than ever this year.” In addition to Snow Time, amusement rides and delicious food options, there are also 14 hectares of gardens with ten individually themed gardens to explore. The Shopping Village offers bespoke shops with everything from collectables, jewellery, glassware, clothing, deli and gourmet foods to crystals and Christmas decorations. There really is something for every member of the family or group. It’s a fun day out with all the benefits and enjoyable moments that a trip to the snowfields brings without the expense and travel time. (Continued next page) F

Organic Wines – A Trail Blazed

WORDS LIANE MORRIS Crafting organic wines is nothing new to Mark Davidson, Managing Director and Head of Grape and Wine Production at Tamburlaine Organic Wines. After all, he's been doing precisely that for too many years to count (without giving away his age!). Mark's commitment to and passion for sustainability practices has led to Tamburlaine becoming Australia's largest producer of award-winning organic wines. Mark is understandably proud to have vineyards in both the Hunter Valley and Orange certified organic under the Southern Cross Certification. For Mark, sustainability and organics are not a gimmick they just make sense. "There's plenty of evidence to prove the harmful effects of modern agricultural practices that aren't organic in nature. We've proven that organic winemaking can be done and works, and I'm excited that consumers are now asking for it," said Mark. "Historically, before the development and use of agricultural chemicals, all winemaking was, in effect, organic. Tamburlaine is now producing a Petillant Naturel range, going back to the roots of true, old fashioned, organic winemaking." In 1985, when Mark and a small group of friends and family purchased Tamburlaine, few winemakers advocated organics, and they were considered 'odd bods' or 'hippies'. As a result, they didn't have access to the technology or substitutes available to organic farmers today. When Tamburlaine started its journey toward organic practices, it did so cautiously and quietly because Mark didn't want the brand to be negatively affected. He was told that it was impossible to do and that there was no prestige in the practice within Australia (unlike in Europe, where some of the world's most prestigious and expensive wines are unashamedly organic). Through a lengthy research and development process, Tamburlaine gradually moved into certified organic status.

yhv 20 | JUN-JUL 2022

Nowadays, Tamburlaine's production has grown to be five times what it was in the 90s, and the market for their wines has also evolved, with consumers now wanting to know the provenance of their food and wine and details of the supply chain from which it comes. There is a growing demand for ethical, organic, and sustainable products that consumers can trust. To cater to this growing demand, Tamburlaine has a well-developed Organic Rewards program that allows customers to buy wine, earn points, and redeem for cash off purchases. It is a highly successful e-commerce business model that rewards brand loyalty. In addition to this, their customers can now offset the carbon emissions from their orders by selecting to contribute 5c per bottle with any purchase. This contribution will then be invested in accredited carbon abatement projects, which further contribute to Tamburlaine's sustainable legacy. Tamburlaine's Case for a Cause is another perfect example of sophisticated brand marketing meeting Mark's beliefs in positive action for the world. If consumers purchase a case of wine, $50 from the sale will be donated to the cause of their choice, with several options available to choose from. "We want to affiliate our brand with community groups, people and causes that add positivity to the world. We want to work with people who are motivated toward positive action, and we actively seek them out to support them and affiliate our brand." "Looking to the future, I see many opportunities to find new audiences and innovate like this." Mark's passion for the health and wellbeing of the environment and his fellow humans is a driving force behind the successful organic wineries, which he hopes to leave in the best possible condition for the generations to come. It's an award-winning wine and a positive experience for all. Visit www.tamburlaineorganicwines.com.au for more information.

Morpeth is a historical village that was founded in 1821. As Australia's second-largest river port only to Sydney, it was once a thriving hub in NSW, and the spot James Campbell chose to build his general store in 1835. From his first-floor lounge room window, he could watch the steamships unload his stock into his riverside warehouse from one of Morpeth's twelve wharves. Goods were then carted up the hill and into Campbell's General Store. Settlers came from as far away as the Queensland border to shop at Morpeth, purchasing everything they required, from food to haberdashery, clothing, kitchen gear and building materials. Today not much has changed! James' servant Elizabeth, who was murdered by a jealous lover, still roams the upper floor rooms, and Campbell's Store now houses the Morpeth Antique Centre with 25 dealers showcasing all things ancient, antique, vintage, deco to retro and bric-a-brac. It's like walking through history or your great grandma's house. Jewellery, chintz and china, depression glass, militaria, nautical and industrial, tools, coins, silver, kitchen gear, bakelite, Olympic, plush toys and tin toys and games… there's something of interest for everyone, young and old. In the back garden area, you'll find an old Brake Van and Slab Hut Cottage, which has been transformed into the most fabulous 'Man Cave' by Robinson Ordinance. Militaria, hunting, sport, garage and transport gear is popular with everyone, but especially men. Traditionally tricky to buy for, we guarantee you'll find something of interest for the men in your life here. The former Servant's Quarters has been converted into a tearoom, which serves a fabulous Devonshire Tea with real cream and fresh strawberry jam and leaf tea in a pot. The Morpeth Antique Centre is open Thursday through to Sunday, and on public holiday Mondays from 10am – 5pm.

INNOVATIVE DINING ENSCONCED IN THE VINES WORDS DI VON ESSEN Hunters Quarter owner and chef Brian Duncan knows his way around a kitchen – and so he should. He has worked in some of the best. Describing his style as 'Modern European', Brian brings a wealth of well-travelled experience to the Hunter's dining scene, having worked at the Dorchester Hotel (three Michelin stars) and Claridge's Hotel (one Michelin Star) in Mayfair in London. Brian was also the executive chef at Level 41 and The Establishment - two of Sydney's most iconic dining venues. Attracted by the region's lifestyle, wine, and food, Brian, his wife Jen, and their two children decided on a "tree change" to the Hunter Valley in January 2016, where they opened Hunters Quarter at Cockfighters Ghost vineyard in Pokolbin. And they haven't looked back. The restaurant itself is elegant and stylishly furnished with floor to ceiling windows providing loads of natural light and a wonderful view of the dam and vineyards located just a few metres away. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming, and the dining space has an almost rustic look to it, with a polished cement floor, timber tables, high ceilings and large drop pendant lighting. For Brian, it's all about the food and the experience, and he tends to shun the limelight, preferring instead to let his food do the talking – letting it define who he is.

Inspired by his international culinary experiences, chef Brian Duncan's menu combines first-class ingredients, bright, balanced flavours and expert technique. HQ's innovative menu is created with the area's local and seasonal produce, and its dishes deliver balanced, innovative originals with texture in the most extraordinary country setting. "Hunters Quarter isn't about fine dining. We feel that the Hunter Valley has sufficient fine dining options. Instead, we are about smartcasual food. We want people to come here to catch up for a glass of wine and choose from the bar menu or sit down for a meal," says Brian. "We are proud that the Australian Good Food Guide has commended Hunters Quarter with a Chef's Hat over the last two years and included us in the Sydney Morning Herald with Australia's best. This year, Hunters Quarter has been voted Contemporary Restaurant of the Year by the Australian Prestige Awards, which is really exciting." Hunters Quarter is up there with the best in contemporary regional dining. Here you will find something for everyone - whatever the occasion. Best of all, it's all bundled up in a relaxed, elegant dining experience with welcoming service in a beautiful and unique vineyard setting.

Going NOLO A Growing Trend WORDS DI VON ESSEN If you’ve noticed a trend toward drinkers reducing their alcohol consumption by drinking low or no alcohol options – you’re not wrong. With many consumers looking to moderate their alcohol intake, the no and low alcohol (NOLO) market is growing in strength. It’s apparent already that this is more than just a passing trend and is a genuine change in consumer drinking habits. Aiming to grab onto the coat-tails of this upwardly mobile trend, local brands Tempus Two and McGuigan have released a range of low and noalcohol wine products.

Tempus Two Lighten Up Tempus Two Lighten Up is a lower alcohol and reduced-calorie wine range. With a Prosecco, Pinot Grigio, Rosé and Pinot Noir, all 750ml with an ABV of 6.8% and light in alcohol content, these wines are not to be taken lightly. Tempus Two Lighten Up doesn’t compromise quality or flavour; using the latest spinning cone technology to remove the alcohol at a lower temperature that is ‘gentler’ on the wine. This allows it to retain more varietal fruit character, aromatics and taste without needing to harvest the grapes before they are ripened to ensure low alcohol.

f o b u H The the Hunter yhv 26 | JUN-JUL 2022

“Lighten Up is perfect for those who are looking to lighten their alcohol intake and reduce calories but still want to participate in the occasion. Enjoy a bottle at an afternoon picnic, long lunch, sporting event, birthday dinner or work function,” says Tempus Two winemaker Andrew Duff. “It’s often perceived that lower alcohol wines lack depth; however, that’s not the case with Lighten Up. We’ve got over 20 years of experience developing this style of wine so consumers can feel confident they are getting a premium quality wine that’s full of flavour.” For the environmentally focused, Lighten Up is produced with 100% of winery energy sourced from solar and wind power as well as 100% biodegradable paper stock used for the labels and recycled cartons.

McGuigan Zero In 2019, McGuigan launched a range of alcohol-free wines responding to the global acceleration and market shift in consumer behaviour toward moderation of alcohol. Owning and operating Australia’s most modern spinning cone column (SCC) technology, McGuigan has developed a signature method to control the process from vine to glass, gently extracting alcohol from wines explicitly crafted for its Zero range, thereby retaining the flavour and mouth feel of the world’s most popular wine varieties. McGuigan Zero is a contemporary alcohol-free selection of Australia’s favourite wine varieties, just without the alcohol. With 0 standard drinks and less than 0.05% residual alcohol remaining in the wine, it is the perfect glass to reach when you want to go alcohol-free. Of course, there are other benefits to be enjoyed: • Lower calories – alcohol has calories in it; a 250ml glass of 12% alcohol wine can be around 210 calories, while a 250ml glass of McGuigan Zero Rosé Alcohol-Free is less than 55 calories; • Lower sugar – Zero Rosé has 38 grams per litre; significantly less than orange juice (88g/L) or Coke (106g/L). Zero refined sugar – the only sugars contained in Zero wines comes from the grapes - no refined sugar is added; and • Gluten-free – for those with an intolerance, no gluten products are used to make Zero wines. Removing alcohol reduces the wine’s capacity to age, so to ensure it tastes exactly how the winemaker intended, it’s recommended that you drink it on or before the best before date specified on the label. The Zero range caters to wine lovers that choose to take a break from alcohol, for whatever reason, but still want to enjoy their wine moment, offering full flavoured Sparkling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, Shiraz, and Red Blend. To find out more, visit www.mcguiganwines.com.au/our-table/ zero-zone.
