What If She Didn't Die?

When & Juliet arrives at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre this June, it brings with it the glittering credentials of a global phenomenon. Since its 2019 premiere, this irreverent reimagining of Shakespeare's most famous tragedy has conquered the West End, Broadway, and stages across the globe, winning three Olivier Awards and earning nine Tony nominations along the way.
The premise of & Juliet is deceptively simple: what if Juliet didn’t die?
Instead of tragedy, the story offers possibility, giving Shakespeare’s heroine the chance to
choose her own future. It’s a clever twist, but also a meaningful one, reframing a centuriesold narrative through a contemporary lens of independence and self-determination.
“It completely reimagines a story we all think we know and flips it into something modern, empowering, and incredibly entertaining,” says Associate Producer Hayley Stoddart.
Stoddart first encountered the show in London’s West End in 2022 on what she describes as “a date with myself.”
“By the end of the night, I was dancing with a perfect stranger,” she says. “It showed me the true meaning of a collective experience.”
That sense of shared joy, of theatre as something you feel together rather than watch, is exactly what The Very Popular Theatre
Company is aiming to recreate for Newcastle audiences.
Powering that story is a soundtrack of global pop hits, songs made famous by artists including Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson. But unlike many jukebox musicals, & Juliet wasn’t built around nostalgia alone.
The concept originated with Swedish superproducer Max Martin, whose catalogue of chart-topping hits spans decades. Rather than focusing on a single artist, the creative team set out to craft an original story that could draw from the full emotional range of his music.
To shape that vision, Emmy Award-winning writer David West Read, who is best known for his work on Schitt’s Creek, was brought in to develop the book. As he worked through

Rachel Parish as Anne Hathaway, Anaiya Mahony as Juliet and Bree Bennett as Angelique
Martin’s songs, he found recurring themes of love, heartbreak, resilience and reinvention.
The answer, it turned out, was hiding in plain sight.
“It’s bold, it’s funny, and it’s packed with music people genuinely know and love.”
By flipping the ending of Romeo and Juliet and introducing a meta-theatrical device in which William Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, rewrite the story in real time, Read created a musical that is as self-aware as it is entertaining, balancing humour, romance and emotional depth with a distinctly modern voice.
“It’s bold, it’s funny, and it’s packed with music people genuinely know and love,” Stoddart says. “You don’t have to convince people to lean in, they’re already there.”
That immediacy, combined with a story that feels both familiar and fresh, has helped the show reach audiences well beyond traditional theatre circles.
“It absolutely feels like a concert. That’s part of what makes it so exciting.”
For The Very Popular Theatre Company, bringing & Juliet to Newcastle is a natural extension of its mission.
“For us, it’s about bringing world-class productions to regional audiences. You don’t have to be in a capital city to experience theatre at the highest level.”
It’s a philosophy the company has been steadily building on, with previous productions including Mamma Mia!, Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins and Jersey Boys, each raising the bar in terms of scale and ambition. Of course, mounting a production of this size comes with its challenges.
“There are so many moving parts. From the set to the crew coordination, it takes a lot of people to make it happen. But that’s also what makes it exciting. It’s about bringing all those elements together to create something really special.”
Her role as Associate Producer spans both creative and logistical worlds, overseeing everything from casting and scheduling through to ensuring the final production meets the company’s high standards.
At the heart of the production is a cast that blends local performers with national
experience, many of whom share longstanding connections to Newcastle’s creative community.
Leading the company as Juliet is Anaiya Mahony, whose journey began with Hunter Drama as a teenager.
“I started when I was in Year 7,” she says. “And I stayed there for six years. It’s where I made some of my best friends and where I really learned what it means to be professional.”
That early training laid the groundwork for her later studies at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), and for a career that now spans both musical theatre and her work as a singer-songwriter. Recent performances include Nine for NIDA, directed by Dean Drieberg, Girls Like That for The Very Popular Theatre Company and Songs for a New World at Qtopia Sydney.
“I used to think I had to choose between musical theatre and being a singer-songwriter. But I’ve found a balance, and that’s been really exciting.”
It’s a balance that makes her ideally suited to & Juliet, a show that sits at the intersection of pop music and theatre.
“Vocally, it’s such a great mix, and I love that this version of Juliet feels so relevant. She doesn’t have to choose between love and herself; she gets both.”
The wider cast brings a similarly rich mix of experience, with performers drawn from across the region and beyond. Rachel Parish takes on the role of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife and the character who champions Juliet's right to a different ending. Parish's recent credits include Scaramouche in Will Rock You and Fantine in Misérables.
The role of William Shakespeare, Juliet's original creator, now forced to watch his heroine rebel against the fate he wrote for her, goes to Marty Worrall. A well-known local performer and vocal coach, Worrall served as backing vocalist and vocal coach for the first six seasons of Nine's The Voice Australia.
Musical theatre performer Bree Bennett, whose CONDA Award for Excellence recognised her standout performance as Veronica Sawyer in Heathers, plays the witty maternal nurse Angélique. Jules Hawson, a NIDA graduate, portrays May, while seasoned
performer Danny Folpp, recently seen in Newcastle's Mamma Mia!, takes on Lance.
Will Sanson, who performed for nine years in the Hunter's STARSTRUCK as a dancer, choir member, and actor, plays shy Frenchman François. And the iconic role of Romeo goes to Tyler Chapman, who brings both stage and screen experience to the production. Beyond his theatre credits, Chapman recently appeared on Season 10 of Australian Idol (2025) and toured Europe and the UK with Australian pop artist BEKS as dancer, backing vocalist, and choreographer.
The principal cast is supported by a dynamic ensemble of more than twenty performers, including an exceptional pool of dancers drawn from across the region.
“It’s been amazing walking into the rehearsal room,” Mahony says. “Everyone is so talented and so generous.”
Director Lauren Harvey was drawn to the show not just for its spectacle, but for its
“I first fell for the music and dance elements,” she says. “But then I fell in love with the idea that we can write, or rewrite, our own stories.”
That idea sits at the centre of her approach to the production.
“This is a story people think they know,” she says. “So the challenge is getting them to look past that and open themselves up to something new.”
Working alongside musical director Dan Wilson and choreographer Vanessa Ambrose, Harvey has built a creative team focused on energy, connection and storytelling.
“There’s an incredible vibe in the rehearsal room,” she says. “The cast is having so much fun, and that energy will absolutely translate to the audience.”
The audition process itself reflected the demands of the show, requiring performers who could balance strong vocals, dance ability and emotional authenticity.
“We had an open call back where we swapped performers in and out to find the ultimate pairings. The whole audition process had a wonderful, supportive environment and gave the creative team a sense of the fun, energetic cast we were about to immerse ourselves in.
“These characters are larger than life. But they also need a realness that makes the audience feel connected to them.”
The result, she says, is a production that feels both polished and deeply human.
“It’s a nostalgic musical party, but there’s real heart underneath it.”
Rehearsals have been moving at speed, with the company already deep into the show. But despite the pace, there’s a strong sense of camaraderie within the cast.
“One of my best friends from NIDA is in the show,” says Mahony. “So that’s been really special.”
At its heart, the show is about identity, independence and the courage to rewrite your own story. It also naturally embraces inclusivity, with LGBTQI+ representation woven into the story and characters who challenge traditional roles and expectations. Critics and audiences consistently describe it as joyful, uplifting, and celebratory.
“I love the glitter,” Mahony says with a laugh. “But the heart of this show is so big. The
is making sure that truth and vulnerability come through.”
For Stoddart, those themes resonate both on and off stage.
“I’m very proud to be a woman building a career in this industry,” she says. “Being part of a female-led creative team, telling a story about independence and rewriting the rules feels incredibly aligned.”
It’s also part of what makes the show feel so contemporary.
“There’s something really powerful about it,” she says. “Audiences connect to that sense of possibility.”
When & Juliet opens at the Civic Theatre, audiences can expect more than just a night at the theatre.
“Audiences will laugh, they’ll cry, and they’ll hear songs they know and love,” says Mahony. “It’s engaging, heartfelt, and so much fun.”
And if Stoddart’s experience in London is anything to go by, they may find themselves part of something bigger than they expected.
“It’s that collective experience,” she says. “That moment where everyone is in it together.”
This June, & Juliet arrives in Newcastle not just as a global success story, but as a production shaped by local talent, creative ambition and a shared love of storytelling.
It’s bold, it’s joyful, and it’s ready to rewrite the ending one audience at a time.
& Juliet plays at Civic Theatre Newcastle from 19-28 June 2026.

It's Time to Cut Loose, Newcastle
IMAGES SOURCE FOOTLOOSE: THE MUSICAL
Get ready to kick off your Sunday shoes — one of the most beloved musicals of the '80s is heading to Civic Theatre Newcastle this May, and it's bigger, bolder, and more electric than ever.
Footloose: The Musical arrives in Newcastle from 14 to 24 May 2026 as part of a national Australian tour that follows a completely soldout season in Melbourne. Better still, this is the first time Australia has seen a professional production of Footloose in over 20 years, making it a genuinely special occasion for musical theatre fans.
Based on the iconic 1984 film, the story follows Ren McCormack, a city kid who moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned. What unfolds is a joyful, emotionally rich journey about youth, freedom, and the courage to stand up for what you believe in. It's the kind of show that brings generations together — whether you danced along to the film the first time around, or you're discovering the story fresh.
The fully remastered production is packed with the hits that made the original a cultural phenomenon: the anthemic title track, Footloose; the soaring Holding Out for a Hero; the sweet Almost Paradise; and the irresistible Let's Hear It for the Boy. Add to that electrifying choreography and standout performances from a cast of sizzling Australian talent, and you've got a night out that's near impossible not to enjoy.
From high-energy ensemble numbers to quieter, heartfelt moments, the show strikes a careful balance between fun and genuine feeling. There's real heart underneath the neon and the nostalgia, a story about a community finding its way back to joy, and a reminder of why music and movement matter.
This is live theatre at its most crowd-pleasing; the kind of production that has audiences on their feet and leaving the theatre with a smile that lingers long after the curtain falls. Whether you're planning a night out with friends, a family outing, or simply after a brilliant live show, Footloose: The Musical delivers pure entertainment with a whole lot of heart.

Newcastle Just Got EVEN MORE Rock and Roll
Source: www.gunsnroses.com
Newcastle has well and truly cemented its reputation as Australia's premier regional live music destination, with Guns N' Roses officially announced to play McDonald Jones Stadium on December 8, 2026.
The iconic rock band joins an already extraordinary summer concert season, following hot on the heels of the Foo Fighters, who are also set to perform at McDonald Jones Stadium — marking the first concerts at the venue since the Newcastle Earthquake Relief shows over three decades ago.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, Guns N' Roses is one of the best-selling musical acts of all time. Formed in Los Angeles in 1985, the band's timeless anthems — Sweet Child O' Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, November Rain and more — have transcended generations and continue to fill stadiums around the world.
It's the fifth international act announced to perform at McDonald Jones Stadium in the past three years, following Elton John, Paul McCartney, P!NK and the Foo Fighters.
"To locals, Newcastle is already paradise, and I am thrilled that soon we'll officially throw open the gates to Paradise City. Newcastle is a world-class city, and the fact that Guns N' Roses are knocking on our door proves major international acts know this is a city worth playing for," said Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley.
"Guns N' Roses are rock and roll royalty, and to have them take centre stage in Newcastle is a huge coup for the region. We can't wait to see Guns N' Roses knockin' on Newcastle's door
this December, just weeks after the Foo Fighters take over the city. Guns N' Roses tour landing in Newcastle reinforces the Hunter's rapid rise as one of Australia's premier regional event destinations, with major global acts choosing the harbour city for headline shows alongside major international capitals," said Minister for Sport and Tourism Steve Kamper.
"Guns N' Roses wrote 'Take me down to the Paradise City' almost 40 years ago, and now that dream is coming to life with a trip to Newcastle. Last month, we announced the Foo Fighters would be taking on McDonald Jones Stadium, and to follow that up with Guns N' Roses is every rocker's dream. Forget coal — Newcastle's biggest export in 2026 is a different kind of rock. Rock 'n' roll!" said Local Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp.
"Securing Guns N' Roses on the back of the Foo Fighters is not just a win for Newcastle music fans; it's a win for local businesses and the Hunter region. Promoters now know, based on sales from recent concerts for P!NK, Sir Elton John, Paul McCartney and the Foo Fighters, that Novocastrians can be relied upon to pack out McDonald Jones Stadium. It's going to be a very big summer for Newcastle — and the good news is we are in talks with promoters about more international acts to come to our city in 2026! Watch this space!" said Councillor Peta Winney-Baartz, City of Newcastle's representative on the Venues NSW Hunter Advisory Committee.
Combined with the recent opening of Newcastle International Airport and its growing global aviation links, the Hunter region is fast
transforming into a powerhouse for the regional visitor economy — creating jobs, backing local businesses and putting Newcastle on the world stage.
Guns N' Roses perform at McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle — Tuesday, December 8, 2026, with special guests Airbourne.
Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. An artist presale opens Wednesday, 11 March at 1pm. Register at www.gunsnroses.com by Sunday, 8 March at 11:59pm AEDT to participate. General tickets go on sale Friday, 13 March at 1pm. All tickets are digital only and accessible via the Ticketmaster App (no printed tickets will be issued). A free My Ticketmaster account is required.

Bold Flavours, New Beginnings at Oaks Cypress Lakes and Elysia
WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGES SOURCE OAKS CYPRESS LAKES RESORT
There’s something shifting in the heart of Pokolbin, and if you’ve visited Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort before, you might think you already know it. The sweeping golf course, the villas tucked into the hills, the long views across vines to the Brokenback Range, it’s always been one of the Hunter Valley’s most recognisable destinations.
But look a little closer right now, and you’ll find a quiet reinvention underway. Not loud, not showy, but thoughtful, ambitious, and led from the kitchen.
Part of that evolution has been shaped by Executive Chef and Director of Food & Beverage, Vinura “Vinnie” de Silva, whose experience and culinary direction have helped refine key dining experiences across the precinct.
Vinnie’s story begins in Colombo, where he entered the hospitality world at just 17, undertaking a work placement at Hilton Colombo while studying at the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management. What followed was a decade spent honing his craft across some of the world’s most demanding kitchens, from the heritage-rich Mount Lavinia Hotel in Sri Lanka to the luxury resorts of Bahrain and the Maldives, before landing in Australia at Bannisters in Port Stephens under the guidance of Rick Stein.
By the time he arrived at Cypress Lakes in 2019, he brought with him not just technical precision, but a deeply personal understanding of flavour - one rooted in Sri Lankan cuisine and refined through classical European technique.
Back then, he was stepping into the role of sous chef. Today, he leads the entire food and beverage vision across the resort.
And it shows.
Source: Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort
For many, Cypress Lakes has long been a place to stay - a base for wine tasting or a weekend escape. But under Vinnie’s leadership, it’s becoming something else entirely: a destination in its own right, defined as much by what’s on the plate as what’s in the glass.
Across the property, three distinct dining experiences now tell that story.
At the refined end sits Oak & Vine, the resort’s signature restaurant and arguably one of the Hunter Valley’s best-kept culinary secrets.
Then there’s the approachable, family-friendly Cypress Lakes Bistro & Bar - a space that has quietly evolved into something far more polished than your typical resort dining.
And soon, a new chapter begins at Elysia Wellness Retreat Dining (Fusion), where wellness and indulgence will meet on a plate, open to the public for the very first time.
Together they create a more rounded dining offering across the precinct, giving guests and locals a variety of ways to experience the property.
If there’s one space that truly defines Vinnie’s vision, it’s Oak & Vine.
Established just three years ago, the restaurant has already carved out a reputation as something entirely unique in the Hunter Valley - a Sri Lankan-inspired dining experience layered with classical French technique.
It’s not fusion for the sake of it. It’s personal.
“When COVID hit, we had to close for two and a half years,” Vinnie recalls. “But that gave me time. I developed curries, pastes, and I really focused on how to take guests on a culinary journey to Sri Lanka.”
That journey is now plated with intention. Each dish is built around bold, expressive flavours with spices that are vibrant rather than overpowering, carefully balanced to carry diners from the first bite to the last.
“Spice doesn’t just mean heat,” he says. “It’s about flavour. It’s about layers.”
What makes Oak & Vine even more distinctive is its approach to wine. Traditionally, heavily spiced cuisines haven’t been natural partners for wine pairing, but Vinnie saw opportunity where others saw limitation.
“We’ve created some unorthodox pairings,” he explains. “And they work. It’s something different, and it enhances the whole experience.”
That commitment to innovation hasn’t gone unnoticed. The restaurant and Vinnie himself have been recognised across multiple industry awards, including the Australian Accommodation Awards and national AHA accolades.
But for Vinnie, the most meaningful moment wasn’t the trophy; it was the experience.
“In 2024, I was a finalist in the AHA national awards for Chef of the Year and standing on that stage with all the big players in the industrythat was one of the best days of my career.”
While Oak & Vine captures the imagination, the transformation of the Bistro & Bar speaks to something equally important: consistency, accessibility, and the ability to elevate the everyday.
The menu here has been quietly refined, still relaxed, still welcoming, but with a sharper edge. It’s a space where families, locals, and guests can gather without ceremony, but still expect quality.
Monthly rotating specials keep things fresh, while the kitchen continues to experiment with flavours and ideas, often drawing on the diverse backgrounds of the team behind the scenes.
Because for Vinnie, the kitchen isn’t a one-person show.
“I can’t do all this by myself,” he says.
Behind him is a strong leadership team, including Executive Sous Chef Jamie Hartcher at Elysia and Executive Sous Chef Renee Burness at Cypress Lakes, who are both instrumental in bringing his vision to life.
Beyond that, the broader kitchen is young, multicultural, and deeply collaborative.
“We have chefs from Australia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Nepal,” Vinnie explains. “We encourage them to create what they’re good at, and we run specials, we test ideas. It’s how we grow.”
That openness has become one of the resort’s defining strengths. It’s not just about delivering a menu, it’s about building a culture of creativity, ownership, and pride.
“The team gives 200 per cent,” he says. “That, along with consistency and service, is what makes the difference.”
Perhaps the most anticipated development is the upcoming public opening of Elysia’s restaurant in a move that signals a broader shift in how the resort engages with visitors.
Previously reserved for guests of Elysia Wellness Retreat, the restaurant, now launching as Fusion, will welcome the public from 18 May. F

It’s a significant change, and one that reflects a growing appetite for dining experiences that balance enjoyment with wellbeing. The menu itself is where things really come to life - thoughtful without being preachy, and flavour-led in a way that feels generous rather than restrained.
Dishes are built around whole, seasonal ingredients, but there’s nothing austere about them. Instead, it’s colour, texture and balance doing the heavy lifting. A rare tuna dish brings together delicate Japaneseinspired flavours with the crunch of tempura crumbs, while the aptly named Purple Bowl layers crisp salmon with grains, vegetables and a turmeric dressing that delivers both warmth and brightness in equal measure.
Even dessert leans into this philosophy - an avocado and dark chocolate mousse paired with red berry compote that feels rich and satisfying, without tipping into excess.
There’s also a full drinks offering to match, including a considered wine list alongside non-alcoholic options, reinforcing the idea that this is a space where guests can choose their own version of balance.
Importantly, the experience remains approachable. Lunch will be served daily from 12pm to 3pm, making it an easy addition to a day in the valley, whether you’re coming in after a morning wine tasting or building a slower, more intentional afternoon around it.
And to mark the opening, there’s a simple but compelling invitation to try it for yourself: throughout May and June, guests who order any entrée and main will receive dessert on the house - a small gesture that perfectly captures the spirit of Fusion, where nourishment and enjoyment go hand in hand.
“It’s about creating a positive relationship with food,” Vinnie says. “Wellness and enjoyment can exist together.”
And with panoramic views across the valley, it’s an experience that extends far beyond the plate. P

Tucked into 55 hectares of lush vines and olive groves at Adina Vineyard & Olive Grove, Estancia Adina blends relaxed elegance with bold, seasonal flavours. Sweeping vineyard views set the stage for a dining experience that's both inviting and memorable.
The restaurant is the vision of chef James Orlowski, who brings a unique culinary perspective shaped by growing up on a New Zealand farm and honing his craft through Peruvian fire cooking. That combination — a deep respect for honest, ingredient-led food and a love of live-fire technique — is at the heart of everything that comes out of the kitchen. Working with Hunter Valley and NSW producers, Orlowski keeps things as local as possible, letting the land around him set the menu's direction. The result is cooking that feels both grounded and exciting, rooted in place but reaching across cultures.
The menu celebrates fire, freshness, and generosity of spirit. Signature dishes like the
Sunday Parilla, a Latin-style mixed grill cooked over open flames, mingled with fresh, citrusy ceviche, handmade pastas tossed with slowcooked ragù, and seasonal Modern Australian creations featuring locally grown herbs and vegetables.
Beyond the headline dishes, there's an all-day tapas menu that rewards curious eaters — think burrata a la caprese, Hokkaido scallops, and pork nduja arancini. Premium Australian Wagyu and seasonal seafood also feature regularly, while Thursday evenings bring a dedicated pasta night, with a weekly-changing menu that might include three-cheese ravioli with spinach and basil pesto, or linguine arrabbiata with semi-dried tomato, chilli and garden herbs. It's the kind of spread that encourages the table to order widely and share freely — which is, of course, entirely the point.
Pair your meal with a classic Peruvian Pisco Sour or a smoky, zesty Smoked Jalapeño Margarita - cocktails designed to complement the bold flavours of the kitchen.
And while the food more than holds its own, the setting adds something extra. Dining
here feels like a full afternoon well spent. Olive groves stretching to one side, rows of vines to the other, and the gentle, unhurried rhythm that the Hunter Valley does so well. For those who want to extend the experience, wine tastings and olive oil experiences at the adjoining Adina Vineyard & Olive Grove round out what becomes much more than a meal.
Open five days a week for lunch, and dinners on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with themed evenings Thursday to Saturday. Estancia Adina is family and dog-friendly, perfect for long lunches, leisurely afternoons, or a special evening in the heart of the Hunter Valley.
Hunter Valley Resort + Farm
The Hunter Valley, Your Way
IMAGES SOURCE HUNTER VALLEY RESORT + FARM
There are places you visit, and places you keep coming back to. Hunter Valley Resort + Farm, on the corner of Hermitage Road and Mistletoe Lane in the heart of Pokolbin, has a way of becoming the latter. Spread across 100 spectacular acres, this is a destination that genuinely does it all - and does it well. Whether you're after a lazy weekend in a spa cottage, a family adventure, a deep dive into wine education, or simply a long lunch with views that don't quit, it's all here under one very big sky.
The story behind the resort is as warm as the welcome. What started in 1991 as a modest 30-room motel has been carefully, lovingly grown by Philip Helé and his family into one of the Hunter Valley's most complete destinations. Two generations work side by side every day, and it shows - in the personal touches, the attention to detail, and the pride that runs through everything. Hunter Valley Resort + Farm holds a distinction that matters: it is the last family-owned and operated resort in the Hunter Valley. That's not just a stat. It's a whole different feeling when you arrive.
The accommodation has evolved considerably, with renovations producing a 36-room lodge that suits everyone from couples to large groups. Hunter Rooms and King Rooms sit near the heated pool and tennis court — ideal for families — while Spa Cottages bring romance to the mix, complete with two-person spas. The Two Bedroom Cottage comfortably sleeps up to six. Book direct for daily breakfast vouchers and free Wi-Fi, and check the Hot Deals page for regularly updated packages.
Speaking of breakfast: the 4 Pines Bistro is a very good start to any day. The barista's coffee is legitimately excellent, and the menu covers everything from eggs Benedict and smashed avocado to simpler options for smaller appetites.
The Farm is the heart of the property's family appeal, home to a cast of characters including pigs, sheep, deer, a llama, ducks, chickens, horses, a donkey, and an ostrich named Bruce. Walk-through paddocks let kids get hands-on, with pony rides a perennial favourite. Older kids and teens can graduate to horse-riding tours across the property, including magical sunrise and sunset options.
For those who want to keep moving, the Adventure Centre delivers. Segway tours cover the 100 acres in style, while electric bikes let you pedal through the vineyards at your own pace. Archery, axe-throwing, and laser clay shooting add a competitive edge, and the
Cooking School, Pizza Making Classes, and Big Kids Candy workshops — where adults make boozy-infused treats including peanut brittle and rocky road — keep everyone occupied. Wine, of course, is central to the experience. The Hunter Farm Wines Cellar Door offers tastings of the property's own wines alongside respected Hunter Valley producers, including Margan, Lisa McGuigan, and Tranquil Vale. The Hunter Valley Wine School runs expertled sessions, while the Hunter Wine Theatre condenses a full year of winemaking into a 15-minute visual presentation — an easy, engaging way to understand exactly what goes into your glass.
Come lunchtime, the 4 Pines Bistro shifts to crowd-pleasing favourites — pizzas, burgers, schnitzels, steaks, a Korean chicken rice bowl — with the alfresco courtyard and 360-degree panoramic views making it a perfect spot to linger.
Evening brings the Taproom and Barrel Bistro to life, with a dinner menu that punches well above its weight. Starters range from southern-fried calamari to lamb skewers with house pickles and tzatziki. Mains span crispy pork belly with cider jus, miso-glazed eggplant, and prawn mee goreng, through to grill selections like a 300g T-bone or MB2+ sirloin. Save room for the truffle fries, and don't skip the affogato with hazelnut liqueur.
With this much on offer, it makes sense to stay. Some destinations do one thing brilliantly – this one does everything well and makes it look effortless. That's the magic of Hunter Valley Resort + Farm: it's the whole experience, wrapped up in 100 acres of beautiful Wine Country, run by a family who genuinely love what they do. Isn't that exactly what a perfect weekend away should feel like?

Soft, Warm and Wonderfully Local
There's something special about pulling on a piece of clothing that tells a complete story - from paddock to product - and that's exactly what you'll find at Australian Alpaca Barn. This beloved family-owned business has been welcoming visitors to the Hunter Valley for almost 30 years, and the passion behind every piece is as evident today as it was when owners Marion and Michael Jack first started out.
The Jacks raise their own alpaca herd at Jacamar Alpacas, their farm in Torryburn. What began with just ten alpacas back in 1997 has since grown into a flourishing herd of almost 100, producing the soft, fine fibre that lies at the heart of everything Australian Alpaca Barn creates. Originally established to champion locally grown alpaca products, the range has since expanded to include a carefully curated global selection sourced from premium producers in Australia, New Zealand, and Perueach chosen for quality and sustainability.
And the appeal of alpaca wool? It really does speak for itself. Exceptionally soft against the skin, warm yet lightweight, naturally
hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, and eco-friendly — it's a fibre that ticks every box. Visitors to the boutique often find themselves genuinely surprised by how different it feels from conventional wool. Once you've experienced it, it's hard to go back.
In the Hunter Valley, you'll find Australian Alpaca Barn at two gorgeous locations - Hunter Valley Gardens and Peppers Creek Village. Each boutique is open seven days a week and stocks a beautiful range of coats, throws, sweaters, scarves, socks, and homewares, all wrapped in that signature alpaca softness. Whether you're treating yourself or searching for a truly special gift to take home, you'll find something worth lingering over.
With boutiques also in Leura in the Blue Mountains and Berrima in the Southern Highlands, along with an online store, Australian Alpaca Barn makes natural luxury accessible wherever you are. But there's nothing quite like visiting in person - seeing the story behind the fibre makes every purchase feel that little bit more meaningful. BimbadgenMore Than Just a View
WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER
IMAGES SOURCE BIMBADGEN
In a region defined by choice, few Hunter Valley estates offer the sheer breadth of experience that Bimbadgen does. Wine of pedigree, multiple dining styles, an on-site distillery, premium accommodation, concerts, weddings and vineyard experiences - all anchored by two of the region’s oldest vineyards and one of its most recognisable hilltop sites, framed by century-old fig trees and sweeping views to the Brokenback Range.
Appropriately, the name Bimbadgen comes from the local Indigenous language and translates to “Place of Good View.” Established in 1968, Bimbadgen has evolved from a quiet vineyard at the end of a dirt road into one of the Hunter’s most complete wine country destinations. It is a place where heritage vines and modern hospitality coexist with ease, and
where visitors can shape their day or their weekend entirely to their own pace.
“There’s something for everyone,” says Jordan Rodgers, General Manager of Hunter Valley Operations.
“We’ve got an expansive footprint with lots of tendrils. People can come for an hour or stay for days.”
From the contemporary cellar door entrance which overlooks a working winery, to long lunches at Esca, wood-fired pizzas in the courtyard, sunset cocktails, vineyard picnics or a stay at The Lane Retreat, Bimbadgen’s appeal lies not just in what it produces, but in how generously it shares it.
Bimbadgen’s story begins on Palmers Lane, where the original vineyard was planted in 1968. Alongside the Palmers Lane site, the McDonalds Road vineyard was planted shortly after, giving the estate two distinct vineyard expressions, both now more than 50 years old.
Those vineyards remain the beating heart of the business. Palmers Lane, with its ancient sandy loam soils on the valley floor, has become synonymous with elegant, perfumed Semillon and refined Chardonnay. McDonalds Road, positioned higher along the valley crest with red volcanic soils, produces earlier-ripening, dry-grown fruit, powerful, structured Shiraz and concentrated reds with depth and drive.
“These are very different sites,” says Chief Winemaker and Head of Sales & Distribution, Michael Hatcher. “Palmers Lane is all finesse and delicacy. McDonalds Road has boldness and structure. Having both gives us enormous blending options, but also the confidence to let each vineyard speak on its own.”
At Bimbadgen, winemaking starts and stays in the vineyard. Each block is treated as if it could become a Signature wine, with parcels vinified separately and handled with equal care. It’s a philosophy that allows the team to blend
with intention, selecting only the best parcels for the Single Vineyard and Signature ranges.
“We’ve got the luxury of really knowing our blocks,” says Hatcher. “You’re looking for an even canopy, consistency in ripening and when it’s right, you can see it straight away.
“We’ve just finished the 2026 vintage, and it’s a real win. When we needed rain, it rained; when we needed it to be hot, it was hot. Hunter Valley growing conditions can be brutal, but I’m very pleased with the fruit this year. It looks sensational.”
The estate’s focus remains firmly on Hunter Valley classics: Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz, supported by a Grower’s range that offers more approachable, early-drinking styles and a popular sparkling selection. While innovation is always on the radar, varieties like Fiano and Sangiovese are being explored for the right sites, with the priority on refinement rather than reinvention.
One wine that quietly encapsulates that approach is the Palmers Lane Chardonnay. Sitting outside the entry-level range in the Single Vineyard bracket, it has become one of Bimbadgen’s most reliable performers.
“It’s not heavily awarded, but it consistently overdelivers,” says Hatcher. “People who enjoy Chardonnay are often pleasantly surprised by it. It wins people over quietly, and we’re starting to see a bit of a reputation build around it.”
That understated success mirrors Bimbadgen’s broader winemaking ethos: letting site and season do the talking.
“Globally, there’s a glut of wine and fruit, and drinking habits are changing,” Rodgers notes. “One category that’s really held up is Single Vineyard wines and classic Hunter styles. That’s where our focus is - producing less, but at an even higher quality.”
The results speak clearly. Recent years have delivered an impressive run of trophies and gold medals across regional, national and international wine shows, including top honours for Palmers Lane and McDonalds Road Semillons and Shiraz. The 2014 Signature Palmers Lane Semillon has been recognised multiple times as
one of Australia’s finest, while newer releases continue to build momentum.
For Hatcher, one milestone stood out. “Our Single Vineyard Semillon being picked up by Malaysian Airlines for Business Class was huge,” he says. “Seeing your wine landing in different destinations like that is incredibly rewarding.”
Behind the wines is a tight-knit team balancing experience with fresh energy. Hatcher joined Bimbadgen last year, bringing with him a background spanning winemaking and sales, a combination well-suited to an estate where the audience comes directly to the source.

Working alongside him is Winemaker and Compliance Manager Sam Boyd, a long-time member of the Bimbadgen team whose career continues to gain international traction. Recently selected as one of just four Australians for the Australia–China Winemaker Immersion Program, Boyd spent four weeks working across Ningxia’s wine region and representing Australian winemaking on a global stage.
“It really reinforced the importance of crosscultural knowledge exchange,” Boyd says.
“Quality, sustainability and collaboration are universal, and that perspective feeds straight back into how we think about our own vineyards and wines here.”
That commitment has also been formally recognised, with Bimbadgen earning Sustainable Winemaking Australia accreditation, a reflection of practices already deeply embedded in daily operations.
The Bimbadgen cellar door sits in a commanding position, offering sweeping views across vineyards to the Barrington and Brokenback ranges. Contemporary in design yet
deeply connected to the working winery below, it offers multiple tasting experiences catering to different levels of curiosity, from Sparkling and Grower’s flights through to Signature and Single Vineyard tastings. A new Vineyard to Table experience is taking that connection even further, combining guided vineyard walks with tastings at each varietal block, followed by a four-course lunch at Esca with matched wines.
“We go well beyond the cellar door,” says Rodgers. “This new Vineyard to Table experience is a great example of how we provide a truly immersive taste of the Hunter Valley. We’re a destination.”
It’s a philosophy that doesn’t stop at the vineyard gate. Dining at Bimbadgen spans multiple moods, united by a shared focus on quality and ease.
At the top end, the long-running and highly respected Esca Bimbadgen Restaurant remains one of the Hunter Valley’s most celebrated dining rooms. Suspended above the winery, it offers a sense of arrival that never quite loses its impact. Weekend dining has recently been extended with the restaurant now open for Sunday lunches.
“Many other operators have set price menus for three or four courses, but we’ve made the

decision to offer a full à la carte, providing our diners with flexibility and choice,” says Rodgers. “It provides our guests with greater freedom to drop in for a glass of wine on the balcony or settle in for a long, leisurely meal.”
Friday sunset sessions with live music, a $10 Martini menu, half-price cocktails, $5 scallops, and other tasty bar snacks add a relaxed counterpoint to Esca’s refined reputation, while locals’ nights and special events keep the calendar dynamic.
For something more casual and familyfriendly, the wood-fired pizzeria set in a Tuscan-inspired courtyard is a firm favourite for families and groups, with live music, happy hour and even pawcuterie boards for four-legged visitors, reinforcing the sense that Bimbadgen is a place to linger.
Gourmet picnic hampers offer a slower pace again, allowing guests to settle into private vineyard spaces with regional produce and a bottle of estate wine, a simple but deeply satisfying way to experience the property.
And adding yet another layer to the Bimbadgen experience is the Night Merchant Distillery, which produces small-batch gins, vodkas, rums, and agave spirits on-site. While still a niche part of the business, it continues to gain traction, with tasting flights available at the cellar door and a recent Silver Medal win at the Australian Gin Awards for its Cask Gin.
With so much to do on the estate, accommodation has become a significant part of Bimbadgen’s evolution. The Lane Retreat, now two years young, has quickly established itself as one of the Hunter Valley’s most sought-after places to stay, with 60 premium studio retreats overlooking vineyards and mountains.
“The guest sentiment has been incredible,” says Rodgers. “People love the sunsets, relaxing with a glass of wine, enjoying their private view, watching the kangaroos, and the sense of space and calm. As the landscape matures, the guest experience will keep getting better and better.”
Additional options at McDonalds Road and Emma’s Cottage cater to families, groups and wedding guests, completing the estate’s impressive accommodation offering.
From world-class Day on the Green concerts at its iconic amphitheatre for 11,000 people to intimate weddings, corporate retreats and milestone celebrations, Bimbadgen continues to expand the ways people connect with the property without losing sight of what matters most.
“It’s about balance,” says Rodgers. “Premium wine production alongside accessible hospitality. Honouring the past while creating something exciting and relevant today.”
More than five decades on, Bimbadgen remains true to its name. The views are still spectacular, but it’s the depth of experience, the care in the vineyard, and the warmth of the
welcome that keeps people coming back. In a region rich with choice, Bimbadgen doesn’t ask visitors to choose just one thing. It invites them to stay, explore, and discover it all. P

Fall into flavour… Autumn in a glass
There's something undeniably special about the Hunter Valley as the season turns. The vines shift from deep green to fiery shades of amber, copper and gold, the air carries a welcome crispness, and cellar doors take on a warmth that makes you want to linger just a little longer. Autumn in the Hunter is a sensory experience - and what's in your glass should match the mood perfectly.
As the days shorten and the temperature eases, our wine preferences naturally shift too. The chilled, zingy whites of the warmer months start to give way to wines with more body, texture and complexity - and the lighter reds we enjoyed cool now come into their own at room temperature, pairing beautifully with heartier, more indulgent food. It's a season that invites you to explore, experiment and savour every sip.
Don't Ditch the Rosé Just Yet
Before you relegate your rosé to the back of the rack, hear us out. This supremely versatile wine is one of the great unsung heroes of the cooler months, holding its own alongside the bold, spice-forward flavours of Middle Eastern, Mexican and Thai cuisines. Dry, textural rosés in particular are a brilliant bridge between the seasons - light enough to feel fresh, complex enough to feel considered.
Reds Worth Reaching For
Autumn is the moment Hunter Valley Shiraz truly earns its reputation. The region's signature red is typically elegant and medium-bodied in its youth, brimming with red and dark berry fruit, warm spice and a firm but rewarding tannic backbone. As it ages, it develops
remarkable depth and smoothness - making it a natural partner for everything from a Sunday roast to a slow-braised lamb shoulder.
Pinot Noir is arguably the quintessential cool-change red, and it's easy to see why.
Lighter in colour with a perfumed, inviting nose, it delivers cherry, raspberry and plum flavours balanced by silky tannins. Think of it alongside roasted chicken, duck, salmon or a warming mushroom risotto - it's a food-friendly variety that rarely puts a foot wrong.
Grenache deserves a place in your rotation this season, too. Deceptively light in colour, it's packed with aromas of raspberry, red plum and a hint of tobacco, with a soft, approachable palate that suits braised meats, slow-cooked veal and earthy autumn vegetables particularly well. Sangiovese rounds out the reds beautifully - its savoury, cherry-driven character is tailor-made for richer autumn, cooking. Try it alongside hearty pasta, slow-roasted pork or a generously aged cheese board.
Whites That Belong on the Table Autumn is no time to abandon white wine - it's simply time to reach for a different style. Fullerbodied whites with texture and concentration are the order of the season, and the Hunter Valley delivers in spades.
Chardonnay is the white wine of the moment in the Hunter, and the contemporary Australian style is a revelation for anyone who dismissed it years ago. Fruit-forward and finely crafted, with oak playing a supporting rather than starring role, it's a natural match for roast chicken, buttery pasta, creamy risottos and anything with a generous béchamel. Look for examples
that show stone fruit and citrus on the nose with a silky, rounded finish.
Hunter Valley Semillon is, of course, the region's most distinctive white - and one of Australia's great wine treasures. Young Semillon is bright and zesty with lemon curd and fresh herb characters; with a few years in the cellar, it transforms into something altogether more complex - honeyed, toasty and magnificently layered. Either style works beautifully with autumn seafood, roast chicken and creamy dips. If you haven't explored the Semillon cellar at your favourite Hunter winery, now is very much the time.
Viognier is worth seeking out, too, particularly if you enjoy whites with a little more personality. Aromatic and lush, with stone fruit, florals and a rich, textured palate, it's a natural companion for mildly spiced dishes and roasted root vegetables.
The Season on a Plate… and in your Glass What makes autumn drinking in the Hunter Valley so enjoyable is the sense of abundance it brings. The harvest has just been completed, the wines from previous vintages are at their drinking best, and every cellar door in the region is worth a visit. Whether you're a devoted Semillon loyalist, a Shiraz devotee or someone who's just starting to discover the joys of Tempranillo, there's a Hunter wine perfectly suited to this season - and a friendly face at a cellar door who'll help you find it.
So pull on a jacket, pour something wonderful, and let the Hunter Valley do what it does best.
