Course Full? Add your name to a wait-list so we can contact you if space becomes available or classes are added.

Cancellations: Classes may be cancelled due to low registration numbers. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Classes Missed due to illness, weather, power failures or other events beyond our control will not be refunded or credited.

Change of Plans? Unless advised otherwise: 1. If you withdraw or transfer before, on or after the course start date, a full refund or credit will be issued.

2. If you withdraw or transfer on or after course start date, or to the end of the 3rd class, a pro-rated refund or credit for the remainder of classes will be issued.

3. Pro-rated refunds or credits after the 3rd class will only be considered for special circumstances only.

4. Private swimming lesson refunds or credits will be considered for special circumstances only.

Low Cost/No Cost Recreation

At Oliver Parks and Recreation, we don’t want to see anyone left out. To assist with being able to participate in programs, there are a few financial assistance options available.

Anyone Can Join Anyone Can Join is a subsidy program supported by local organizations such as the Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #97 and the Oliver Elks, to provide financial assistance to Oliver/Area “C” children, youth and adults towards membership and registration into recreation programs of their choice, up to $150 per person per calendar year. Families or individuals in need of assistance are asked to complete and submit an application form at the Oliver Community Centre. Each form is reviewed in confidence by the Recreation Supervisor and approved applicants are registered directly into the program.

JumpStart

Who we fund is simple: Kids. Kids who want to get active. Kids who want to learn a new sport or activity. Kids who want to keep up with a sport or activity they already enjoy. These kids just need a little extra financial help to get their name on the roster. Kids aged 4 to 18 from families in financial need can receive funding to help with registration fees, equipment and/or transportation. www.jumpstart.canadiantire.ca

Spirit of the Game

The Spirit of the Game Society was established to help families in Oliver and Osoyoos. A non-profit organization with a volunteer board, the Spirit of the Game Society is structured to deliver 100% of all donations to providing league fees and covering equipment costs. BlastBall provides an ideal entry level of play for the youngster who will go on to play the game of softball or baseball. It is a great way to have fun and learn basic skills in a recreational setting.

This program is designed to introduce participants to canoeing in a group setting. The self-discipline that develops as a result of learning and practicing the techniques performed in Taekwondo carries over into other areas of the student’s life. School grades often improve as you learn to focus on objectives and to work toward achievement. The self-discipline and self-respect which TKD develops can provide you with skills and the courage to speak up against bullies. Ethos Parkour takes a “structured playtime” approach to parkour training for kids that incorporate conditioning into games and creative physical activities. The Oliver EELS Swim Club is an excellent opportunity for younger swimmers to work on their strokes, improve their speed and build confidence in a non-competitive environment.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Jiu Jitsu is founded on the idea that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique and leverage to defeat the opponent. Jiu Jitsu training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defence situations. Wrestling (rolling) and live drilling play a huge role in training and the practitioner’s development. It’s considered a martial art, a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness and building character, and a way of life.

Outdoor Adventure Camps Oliver Parks and Recreation believes in connecting people to nature and is excited to launch a new summer camp option for kids and families who love being in the great outdoors. Thanks to a new partnership with Scouts Canada, all of our 2020 summer camp programs will have access to Camp Seacrest, a characteristic grassland and Ponderosa forest near White Lake Observatory.

The camp is ideally suited to group camping and outdoor learning activities. Read on to find out how your child can experience the joys of a true camping experience this summer while still being close to home…

Youth Adventure Camp

While learning outdoor skills and experiencing new adventures, your child will build confidence and memories that last a lifetime. Campers will spend 2 days at the Community Centre preparing for adventure camp by learning about tents and other camping equipment, how to menu plan, pack and protect the environment in addition to swimming and other camp activities. The last 3 days of the week will be spent up at Camp Seacrest for overnight adventure camp where kids can just be kids, make new friends, explore and try new things. We will play wide games like capture the flag, camouflage and mission impossible, learn about survival skills, hike and even create our own journey sticks and other nature-based crafts. When at Camp Seacrest, participants will sleep in groups in the tents provided and all meals and snacks are included in the registration fee. Campers will be supervised at all times by our qualified and caring camp counsellors. A list of recommended supplies and equipment will be provided prior to camp start date.

Survive Outside

Augment your basic outdoor survival knowledge by taking the “Survive Outside – A Guide to Outdoor Safety” program offered

by AdventureSmart. This brief presenterled classroom program is targeted toward novice outdoor enthusiasts, youth groups, and everyone – young and old – interested in learning introductory outdoor survival practices from highly-experienced SAR volunteers and AdventureSmart team members.

In the Survive Outside program, you will learn about SAR in your region, trip planning, training and taking the essentials, and other outdoor travel tips. Our seasoned, knowledgeable instructors help you tie everything together with scenarios and analyses of real-life SAR experiences. Program is funded by the following partners: Government of Canada, Emergency Management BC, BC Search and Rescue Association.

Emergency First Aid CPR-C

This 8-hour First Aid course will cover the skills needed to recognize and respond to potential and immediate dangers and safely approach any emergency. Learn how to respond to cardiovascular emergencies for children & adults (CPR Level C) with Automated External Defibrillation (AED) training. Other topics that will be covered include: choking, breathing & bleeding emergencies and how to treat for shock.

Oliver 3K and 10K Run

This is Road Race #3 in the Interior Running Association series. This flat and scenic 10K loop on the Oliver Hike and Bike Trail is a popular race for runners of all abilities and experience.

Grab your baskets and come on down to the Oliver Community Park to hunt for colourful Easter Eggs that have been scattered all over the fields. Hunts will be staggered based on age. August 14th to 16th, 2020 Oliver’s annual, Roots and Fruits Expo is a fun-for-all-ages celebration of our town, it’s agriculture, history and rich arts community.

The Expo will start Friday, August 14 with our third annual Rock and Roll Picnic. On top of the party atmosphere hyped by great rock and roll music, come for the food! Once again, we’ll have top local chefs transforming humble hotdogs into works of culinary art in our “Top Dog” People’s Choice cooking competition. To enter this level babies must be able to hold their head up. The goals are to help babies experience floating and movement through songs and play.

Swim Kids 1

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Sea Turtle 2 - 5 yrs (Parented)

For toddlers and their caregivers, learn how to perform basic floats, glides, and kicks. Can also be taught unparented if child is ready.

Swim Kids 2

Swimmers work on the 5m front swim and learn about deep water activity and proper use of a PFD. Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Sea Otter 3 - 5 yrs

This is a transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of an instructor.

Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides.

Swim Kids 3

This level provides an intro to diving and teaches swimmers to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Fitness activities include flutter kick and 15m endurance swim.

Swim Kids 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support in deep water and a 25m endurance swim.

Salamander 3 - 5 yrs

Swimmers learn to swim 2m, develop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glide. Learn water safety skills such as how to jump into chest deep water and use a PFD.

Sun Fish 3 -6 yrs

Swimmers learn to swim 5m, front and back glide with kick, rollover glide, side glide and front swim. Learn about deep water skills and the use of a PFD.

Crocodile 3 -6 yrs

Swimmers learn to swim 5m on their front and back. Perform a dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing, progress with kicking drills.

Whale 3 -6 yrs

Swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10m, work on developing flutter kick, perform a distance swim of 15m.

Safe swimming skills including deep water and surface support.

This level introduces the back craw (15m), sculling, whip kick, stride dives and treading water. Front craw increases to 15m and endurance increases to 50m. Safety skills include introduction to safe boating.

Swim Kids 6

Focus on front and back crawl (25m) and introduces elementary back stroke, safety on ice, and rescue of others using throwing assists. Front dive, treading water for 1.5 mins, dolphin kick and a 75m endurance swim.

Swim Kids 7

This level focuses on front and back crawl (50m), elementary back stroke (25m), and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway obstruction, reach assists, stride entry and endurance increases to 150m.

Swim Kids 8

This level introduces breast stroke and feet first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the danger of open water, hypothermia, chocking rescues and shallow dives. Endurance increases to 300m swim.

Swim Kids 9

This level refines the front and back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m). Swimmers work on head first surface dives and self rescue from ice.

Endurance increases to 400m.

Swim Kids 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m, side stroke 25m).

Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head first and feet first surface dives. Endurance increases to a 500m swim.

Oliver Pool Programs Bronze Star

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts.

Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport. Pre-requisite is completion of Swim Kids 10.

Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water.

Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. The new edition of the Lifesaving Manual is required for this course and participation in the full 20 hours is mandatory.

Bronze Cross

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. Must have completed Bronze Medallion and participation in all 20 hours is mandatory.

Oliver Pool Rules & Regulations Lightning Policy All the rules and regulations are clearly posted at the pool in various locations. For everyone’s comfort and safety, please obey all the rules at all times.

Rules Worth Repeating: • children seven (7) years and under and any child unable to competently swim one width of the pool MUST be within arm’s reach of a responsible guardian 16 years or older AT ALL TIMES • shower before entering the pool • public showers are available during public swim times only • disposable diapers are not allowed in the pool without snug-fitting plastic pants worn over top (available for sale at the pool office) • patrons with infectious or contagious conditions such as pink-eye, chicken pox, open sores, etc., will not be allowed into the pool • please listen to the direction of our lifeguards at all times for your own safety and for the safety of others. Those who do not will be asked to leave the pool area.

Because of the unpredictable nature of lightning and its often disastrous consequences, the Oliver Community Pool will always adhere to the following safety guidelines as set out by the NATIONAL LIGHTNING SAFETY INSTITUTE. 1. When thunder is heard 30 seconds or less after a flash of lightning is observed, the pool will be cleared. Staff strongly recommends that all patrons remain inside the pool building until the storm subsides.

2. Pool activities shall remain suspended until 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard.

There will be no exceptions. It should be noted that storms are erratic and even though it may appear “safe” to resume activity, it is not.

3. Red Cross lessons are also subject to cancellation due to lightning. There will be no reimbursement or rescheduling of the classes that are cancelled due to weather.

Taichi & Qigong Class

This course is a gentle, zero-impact exercise, suitable for persons of all ages and fitness levels. Emphasis is on the whole body, including muscle control, core strength, joint motion, and flexibility. It is also useful therapy for persons having difficulty with balance, flexibility and mobility, such as those suffering from joint replacements, Parkinson’s disease and arthritis.

The beginner’s class covers Qigong exercises, techniques for relaxation and meditation, and the Tai Chi introductory set. Instruction is also available for continuing students in the Short Set and the Long Form. Registration closes two weeks after the first lesson or when fifteen beginners have registered, whichever occurs first. Experienced Taichi students welcome any time.

Adult Programs 16+ years Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate is a non-contact sport played with a Frisbee (disc) by two seven-player teams. The object of the game is to score goals. The disc may only be moved by passing - the thrower is not allowed to run with the disc. Whenever a pass is incomplete, intercepted, knocked down or contacts an out of bounds area, a turn-over occurs, resulting in an immediate change in possession. A goal is scored when a player successfully passes the disc to a teammate in the end zone. It’s a great workout and a lot of fun. Please bring water and wear running shoes or cleats, all other equipment is provided. No experience necessary.

Jiu Jitsu is founded on the idea that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique and leverage to defeat the opponent. Jiu Jitsu training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defence situations. Wrestling (rolling) and live drilling play a huge role in training and the practitioner’s development. It’s the second time in two years that BOATING BC has generously supported our town, and the gift allowed us to double our fleet of canoes to 8! Community Hall gaining accessibility

The Oliver Parks and Recreation Administration Office and Community Hall are becoming more accessible for those with hearing difficulties, thanks to a grant from the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Grant. Our reception counter now offers a hearing induction loop, and we have available hearing assist belt packs and T-coil-linked neck-loops available to borrow for use in the Community Hall. Weight Room 14+ years Fitness Room Orientations

New to the fitness room or trying to get in to a more active lifestyle? Attend a one-time intro session to our fitness room to get familiar with the different cardio and weight equipment options, and learn how to use them safely and effectively. Please sign up for the session of your choice in advance. Participants must be 14 years or older and hold a current membership or pay a drop-in fee to attend. To schedule your session, please contact the Community Centre office. $20/session

Group/Corporate Membership Rates Oliver Parks and Recreation believes that healthier workplaces are the most productive. It is also true that people who commit to exercise together and keep each other accountable are more motivated and successful in their fitness goals. When 6 or more adults from the same place of business or organization purchase three or six month memberships to the Oliver Community Weight Room, they will receive a 25% discount as well as a free group weight room orientation session with a certified fitness instructor.

As a member/user of this facility I agree to comply with the following guidelines or risk the suspension or termination of my membership privileges: 1. I will carry my membership card when I use the facility.

2. I will ensure that my membership is always in good standing.

4. I will respect the equipment in the weight room by using equipment properly, putting things back in their place, wiping down equipment after use and informing staff or volunteers when something is not working properly.

5. I will sign the daily waiver upon entry each time I use the facility.

6. I will remove outside footwear and put on a pair of clean shoes.

7. I will be respectful of staff, volunteers and other weight room users.

8. I will respect the 20-minute time limit on cardio machines during peak/busy times.

9. I will strive to always use the weight room space and equipment in a safe, appropriate way that will further my physical fitness.
