Pool Policies & Procedures

COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the way we live, play and work. Swimming and other related activated are excellent ways to get the physical activity needed for a healthy lifestyle. The use of swimming pools is considered a low risk activity as long as the pool is operated and maintained properly and everyone does their part to keep others safe.

There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through pool water. Proper maintenance, operation and disinfection (i.e. with chlorine) of pools and hot tubs should inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19. Appropriate care should be taken both in and outside the pool, to protect yourself and others.

Policies and procedures for the Oliver Pool have been developed to minimize the risk COVID-19 poses to the health of its employees and to the public. It is imperative that all posted guidelines and directions from the Lifeguards are followed at all times.

Here are some things to consider before you come and during your visit: • Do not come to the pool if you are sick or feel unwell, or if you have been told to self-isolate • Everyone must wash/sanitize their hands when entering the pool area using soap and water or hand-sanitizer • Shower before using the pool and when you get home • Do not spit of blow your nose in the water • Practice physical distancing by keeping 2 meters between family units • Do not bring valuables or extra belongings to the pool as lockers will not be in use, bags of personal belongings can be hung on the fence or left on the deck • Our maximum bather load at all swim times is forty (40) persons including the pool, hot tub and on deck. The maximum bather load for the hot tub is five (5) persons.

• Due to the reduced number of people that can be in the pool area at one time, please limit spectating of swim lessons to 1 parent/guardian.

• All Aquafit classes will have limited spaces and we strongly encourage participants to book their spot in advance.

All groups wishing to rent the Oliver Pool must provide proof of liability insurance and adhere to the guidelines in the Pool Safety Plan.

Oliver Pool Rules & Regulations Lightning Policy All the rules and regulations are clearly posted at the pool in various locations. For everyone’s comfort and safety, please obey all the rules at all times.

Rules Worth Repeating: • children seven (7) years and under and any child unable to competently swim one width of the pool MUST be within arm’s reach of a responsible guardian 16 years or older AT ALL TIMES • shower before entering the pool • shower-only access available during leisure swim & lane swim times when physical distance can be maintained • disposable diapers are not allowed in the pool without snug-fitting plastic pants worn over top (available for sale at the pool office) • patrons with infectious or contagious conditions such as pink-eye, chicken pox, open sores, etc., will not be allowed into the pool • please listen to the direction of our lifeguards at all times for your own safety and for the safety of others. Those who do not will be asked to leave the pool area.

Because of the unpredictable nature of lightning and its often disastrous consequences, the Oliver Community Pool will always adhere to the following safety guidelines as set out by the NATIONAL LIGHTNING SAFETY INSTITUTE. 1. When thunder is heard 30 seconds or less after a flash of lightning is observed, the pool will be cleared. Staff strongly recommends that all patrons remain inside the pool building until the storm subsides.

2. Pool activities shall remain suspended until 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard.

There will be no exceptions. It should be noted that storms are erratic and even though it may appear “safe” to resume activity, it is not.

3. Red Cross lessons are also subject to cancellation due to lightning. There will be no reimbursement or rescheduling of the classes that are cancelled due to weather.

During all lane swim times, Oliver Pool lifeguards are available for stroke correction and help with technique.

Mats, basketball hoop, and balls are available for use.

Youth welcome for full pool access including diving board and hot tub plus games and music.

Aquafit

Splash your way to toned muscles, increased calorie burn and fitness with this fun, safe aerobics class in water! Using the resistance of water combined with movement, Aquafit provides a full body workout while the weightless environment makes it easy on your joints. Morning and evening classes at the Oliver Pool will both provide options to accommodate every fitness level. Participants should be comfortable in water.

Private Swimming Lessons

30 minute Red Cross lessons one-on-one with an instructor. Great alternative to group lessons, and ideal for adult lessons. Lessons will be offered in blocks of 5 or 10 sessions and the first 15min of the first class will be used to evaluate swimmer ability. Semiprivate (additional swimmers) requests will be approved by aquatic staff based on compatible swimmer abilities.

Water Babies 4 mo - 2 yrs (Parented)

To enter this level babies must be able to hold their head up. The goals are to help babies experience floating and movement through songs and play.

Swim Kids 1

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Sea Turtle 2 - 5 yrs (Parented)

For toddlers and their caregivers, learn how to perform basic floats, glides, and kicks. Can also be taught unparented if child is ready.

Swim Kids 2

Swimmers work on the 5m front swim and learn about deep water activity and proper use of a PFD. Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Sea Otter 3 - 5 yrs

This is a transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of an instructor.

Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides.

Swim Kids 3

This level provides an intro to diving and teaches swimmers to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Fitness activities include flutter kick and 15m endurance swim.

Swim Kids 4

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support in deep water and a 25m endurance swim.

Salamander 3 - 5 yrs

Swimmers learn to swim 2m, develop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glide. Learn water safety skills such as how to jump into chest deep water and use a PFD.

Sun Fish 3 -6 yrs

Swimmers learn to swim 5m, front and back glide with kick, rollover glide, side glide and front swim. Learn about deep water skills and the use of a PFD.

Crocodile 3 -6 yrs

Swimmers learn to swim 5m on their front and back. Perform a dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing, progress with kicking drills.

Whale 3 -6 yrs

Swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10m, work on developing flutter kick, perform a distance swim of 15m.

Safe swimming skills including deep water and surface support.

Adult Red Cross Basics 1 & 2

It is NEVER too late to learn how to swim! Whether you are a little bit afraid or just never got around to it, our friendly qualified instructors can help you.

This two-level learn-to-swim program for adults and teens will help increase your comfort in the water through floats, glides, kicking and swimming. Work with your instructor to set your own swimming skill development goals.

Please leave puddle jumpers and water wings at home! When lifejackets/PFD’s are needed during lessons, our staff will provide them.

Registered swim lesson participants are to wait on deck until under the direct supervision of the instructor.

Swim Kids Levels 5-10 (6 years and up) 10 sessions $46.95 | 9 sessions $41.95 Swim Kids 5

This level introduces the back craw (15m), sculling, whip kick, stride dives and treading water. Front craw increases to 15m and endurance increases to 50m. Safety skills include introduction to safe boating.

Swim Kids 6

Focus on front and back crawl (25m) and introduces elementary back stroke, safety on ice, and rescue of others using throwing assists. Front dive, treading water for 1.5 mins, dolphin kick and a 75m endurance swim.

Swim Kids 7

This level focuses on front and back crawl (50m), elementary back stroke (25m), and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway obstruction, reach assists, stride entry and endurance increases to 150m.

Swim Kids 8

This level introduces breast stroke and feet first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the danger of open water, hypothermia, chocking rescues and shallow dives. Endurance increases to 300m swim.

Swim Kids 9

This level refines the front and back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m). Swimmers work on head first surface dives and self rescue from ice.

Endurance increases to 400m.

Swim Kids 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m, side stroke 25m).

Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head first and feet first surface dives. Endurance increases to a 500m swim.

Oliver Pool Programs Bronze Star

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts.

Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport. Pre-requisite is completion of Swim Kids 10.

Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water.

Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. The new edition of the Lifesaving Manual is required for this course and participation in the full 20 hours is mandatory.

Bronze Cross

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. Must have completed Bronze Medallion and participation in all 20 hours is mandatory.

Oliver Eels Swim Club

The Oliver EELS Swim Club is an excellent opportunity for younger swimmers to work on their strokes, improve their speed and build confidence in an non-competitive environment.

Participants must have completed Swim Kids Level 5.
