4 Stunning Seasons in the Wine Capital of Canada Do you have a taste for adventure? A desire to breath in the crisp, vibrant bouquet of an award-winning wine? Or long to relax with your toes in the sand, fingers wrapped around a freshly-picked apple? Oliver has all of these flavours and more to whet your travel appetite. Plan to stay for a day-long bike ride, or a season of harvesting the fruits of our land. We have hours of sunshine. Trails that stretch to the horizon or lead to the top of a mountain. The perfect recipe to cultivate a moment in the Wine Capital of Canada. Mix with any season, and add a twist or two - and enjoy. Work up an appetite in the winter with a mountain-top hike, a day of skiing at Baldy Mountain Resort, a leisurely walk along the Okanagan
river, perhaps even a “fat tire” bike ride in fresh snow. We celebrate the season in style with a Rosé Revolution deep in the heart of BC wine country. The snow may be falling outside, but inside we’re toasty, and toasting a worldwide “drink pink” mantra. The lengthy harvest season is coming to a close, and it’s time to celebrate. Speaking of pink, as the days grow longer and the sun glows brighter, spring brings a vista of blossoms reaching skyward, inspiring artists to capture the season, or drawing you out to walk amongst the buds, with birdsong as your soundtrack. Bring binoculars, you never know who you might see in the trees...a resident owl or the first buds of a favourite grape varietal, starting its journey to the glass.
Summer turns golden, and it’s Oliver’s season to shine under a hot sun, then relax under cool, desert nights. Marathoners have their choice of races, golfers dot the greens, bikes whirl down trails. Break a sweat, then reward yourself with a tasting or two at a local winery, a gourmet dinner on a patio, or a picnic in a park as the notes from a concert sail through the warm evening air. Autumn? That’s harvest time, from crushing grapes to baking apple pies, it’s farm to table (or wine glass) season. From vintage to vintage, taste to taste, you’ll be back for seconds. It’s time to pick your adventure in the Wine Capital of Canada.

Summer A visit to Oliver is not complete without a sun-soaked drive – by car or bike – along the Golden Mile, our signature winery trail...a warm glow falls over the vineyards and mountains, creating a perfect backdrop for a summer day. Along the way you might stop into a fruit stand, gaze at wildlife observing you from the hills, or grab a bite at the growing number of food trucks.

Soak up some vitamin D and get some exercise here in triathlon country. Choose from races - amateur to pro to running through vineyards drinking wine - held in the Oliver area as a participant, or volunteer and cheer on competitors from around the world. Biking from winery to winery at a relaxed pace is an option, but for the more dedicated, a short trail ride along a gentle path, or a long one up a mountain, may be more up to speed. More than two dozen wineries will help you hydrate during these hot, dry weeks. Take a break on a winery patio with some local charcuterie or a gourmet dinner as the sun sets. Our chefs are artists and love to show off their creations, with ingredients sourced from farms and producers nearby, but you too can cultivate your chef skills with a cooking class, or become a winemaker for a short time at a grape stomp - costumes often encouraged - or blending seminar where you will learn the art and science that goes into a glass. Take a break at a museum or art gallery and learn about Oliver’s colourful history. Finish the day with Music in the Park, with your toes embracing the cool grass and your ears enjoying some cool tunes, or grab a partner and dance the night away as the stars come out.

A Vintage for every taste
Nestled in the beautiful south Okanagan, Oliver can proudly call itself the Wine Capital of Canada. Vineyards dot the landscape and provide the necessary ingredients to produce some of the finest vintages in the country, and we’re home to more than two dozen of the province’s licensed, internationally recognized wineries. The “Golden Mile” on the west bench is recognized as a distinctive viticultural area that is rich with glacial deposits formed from the ice age. Wineries located on the “Black Sage” east bench have equally unique growing climates with deep sandy deposits. Winemakers assert that different soil conditions, known as terroir, have an identifiable impact on the flavour of the wines.

Craft breweries offer cold ones, many with seasonally-inspired flavours, and award-winning distilleries produce gin, with botanicals sourced nearby, crystal clear vodka, and even a whisky or two. Autumn The glorious bounty of autumn. The culmination of a hot summer extends into a warm, golden season of harvesting all that Oliver offers, from fruit to wine to spectacular moments in nature. This is our season to show off, you’ll fall in love with it…warm days and cool nights ahead. While the temperature starts to cool, some days it’s still t-shirt weather, perhaps with a hoodie tucked under a bike helmet.

To really get back to nature and explore the area, visit a local stable and opt to explore by hoof. Relive the history of ranching in the area by trotting down a trail on horseback with an experienced guide, or take the quiet backroads surrounded by vineyards. Book an extended stay for the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival, and browse dozens of events throughout the region. Blend your own Bordeaux-style bottle; be a winemaker, if only for a few hours. Form a team, get some costumes, and stomp some grapes at the Festival of the Grape. Book winemaker dinners for a couple of evenings and savour not having to cook. Carefully climb a ladder and reach the fruits of our labour. The harvest season is long and varied, and nothing tastes better than your own, handpicked and hand-made “farm to table” creation. Explore fruit stands dotted along highways and country roads, gathering all the fresh ingredients any chef could possibly desire. Once you’re done picking the best of our harvest, head outdoors to watch the salmon run, or hike up McIntyre Bluff in search of wildlife and truly get back to the land, capturing a moment with a family of Bighorn sheep. As the night air begins to cool, you’ll know...you’ve fallen for Oliver in autumn.

Enjoy our Local Eateries After a day of exploring, take some time to sit back and relax in the easy-going atmosphere of one of our downtown bistros, cafés, family restaurants, golf courses or ethnic eateries. Fine dining is also available at several the local wineries, and an abundance of local produce is featured in Oliver menus along with extensive selections of Okanagan wines, often including labels not available in stores. Chefs from culinary hot spots elsewhere are making
their way to the Okanagan to set tables on farms, between rows of vines, under a canopy of stars... right next to the produce growing in this agricultural haven. Get fresh with a farmer
With more than 400 farms cultivating the land to grow fresh produce, agriculture has been at the heart of Oliver since town namesake Sir John brought irrigation to the community in the early 1900s. From ground crops to fruit trees, farmers have tilled these soils for generations. This is where ‘freshly picked’ means knocking the dirt off a bunch of carrots from the farmers’ stand, or climbing a ladder in the u-pick cherry orchard. Springtime brings weeks of blooming fields, like a fragrant wave flowing through the valley. Starting in mid-April (cherries) and ending in early May (apples), Oliver orchards literally burst into life. By summer it’s harvest time, beginning late in June and stretching well into October.

It’s a patchwork quilt of colours, with golden Bartlett pears, deep red Bing cherries and bright green Granny Smith apples stitched together by rows of vineyards. Because of our warm climate, Oliver and Area C blooms & harvests fruit approximately 2 weeks ahead of other areas in the Central/North Okanagan. In 1990, cherries got Oliver into the Guinness Book of Records with the largest pie ever made: all 37,740 pounds of it. It fed 1500 people and tasted great.

Grab your board or bike, a helmet and a bottle or two of water, and head to the skateboard park and BMX track, both in Lions Park, near a walking path and play area. On a hot day, the Oliver Kinsmen Spray Park will cool anyone down, or dip your toes in the outdoor Oliver community pool, open from mid May to mid September. The adjacent community centre has activities throughout the year, for all ages and anyone seeking a bit of adventure or education. Wind down with a walk to the beach at Tuc-el-Nuit Lake; its non-motorized mantra means hours of uninterrupted floating for those seeking quiet relaxation while the younger set splashes and builds sandcastles. things in the gold rush days at the local jail – it’s not used for anything now but photo-ops and tall tales. Oliver’s history is intricately tied to the heady boom-and-bust days of six shooters and dreams of striking it rich, even if those days didn’t last very long. The museum offers a snapshot of early settler life, and is entirely run by volunteers so there’s likely a good story or two waiting for you. Sun worshipper or snow lover, history buff or adventure seeker, your next tall tale is closer than you think, and the kids will have memories for years to come. Gleaners Give Back A true reflection of our bounty and our community spirit, Oliver is home to an organization that helps feed the less fortunate around the world. You can participate in this unique experience that brings together volunteers and is a one-of-a-kind experience. Gleaning is the collection of leftover crops after fields have been harvested, with a goal of reducing agricultural and food waste. Founded in the autumn of 1994, the
Okanagan Gleaners produce dried soup-mix consisting of a plethora of produce. Housed in a converted 1920s tobacco-drying barn, now a fully-renovated food processing plant, since 1996 more than 45 million servings have been shipped and distributed around the globe to those in need, averaging 6 million servings annually. It’s a modest facility surrounded by farms and orchards. But it is big in
heart and soul, as volunteers gather produce that didn’t make the grade for store shelves, then work together in a coordinated production line to sort, chop, and peel, often outside in the Oliver sunshine with newfound friends. Some “volun-tourists” come each year to help, and can sometimes grab a camping spot to be close to the action. It’s a great harvest activity with plenty of feel-good moments. okanagangleaners.ca

Winter The hustle and bustle of harvest is now a warm memory, and the landscape becomes tranquil around Oliver…but it merely covers layers of activity beneath it. The cool silence is broken by the sounds of a concert or play down the street, friends gathered at an art show or a local theatre - the Frank Venables Theatre is a gem with artistic performances and special events.

The South Okanagan Concert Series, the Oliver Movie Theatre and troupes of actors walking the planks of a stage make for a perfect entertaining end to a winter’s day of exploration. Truly, a winter visit to Oliver must include a day or two at Baldy Mountain Resort, the nearby ski hill that is perfect for families of snow buffs. Baldy is set on a vast and rugged landscape of hills and grasslands that invite hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing if you’re not into winter sports and visit during another season. But it shines in winter. Rent your equipment, sign up for ski school, and hit the slopes. They even have ski and snowboard camps for the whole family. Cold enough for you? Grab a thermos full of java from a local coffee shop, your favourite tackle, and wait for the big one to come along. Wave a friendly hello to your fellow ice-fishers on Vaseux Lake. Take your skates and stick out for a game on natural ice, during the bracing cold when it’s safe to venture out. First Nations The Okanagan First Nations people have been in the Oliver region for hundreds of years, and their culture and influence on the region are a critical part of the area’s history, and its future. Steeped in the bounty of the land and water, the First Nations depended upon and protected the rich agricultural resources in the South Okanagan, depending on nature to provide for their community, from food to medicine to shelter. Spring Spring is a season of sights in Oliver: birds and blossoms abound. It’s picture perfect; be prepared to capture it. No filter required. Numerous species of birds await the avid or amateur ornithologist. Whether you’ve got binoculars, a telephoto camera or a smartphone in your pocket, you’ll be reaching for it to grab an image of our feathered friends, perhaps even a “who’s who” of the local owl population if you’re lucky.

It’s a great season to breathe in the blossoms that almost overwhelm the views. A sign of the cultivation to come, Oliver’s area orchards and vineyards become a kaleidoscope palate worthy of a masterful painting, as trees and vines and flowering pants welcome the return of the warm sun. Don’t be surprised to find artists capturing the season, or an art faire where you can pick up a new treasure as a vivid and arty memory of your visit. Hiking boots or golf shoes? It’s time to get into the swing of spring. Our trails beckon for exploration, after all, that’s where the birds congregate and nature tempts you to take a moment to listen to the music of birdsong and the quiet buzz of nature and streams. Hit a trail by foot or bike Whether it’s ascending McIntyre Bluff, trekking the backcountry to Ripley and Madden Lakes, or strolling the boardwalk at Vaseux Lake to glimpse a golden eagle, there’s a trail to get you out of (and around) town. Desert-like conditions mean Oliver is home to a variety of unique flora and fauna, and new trails to explore the area evolve every few years. Bring your bicycle - the International Hike and Bike Trail allows for two-wheeled adventures, and you may want to stop to catch the salmon run. Be sure to ride and hike with care, because the natural beauty includes prickly pear cactus - also known as ‘jumping cactus’. You might not want to find out why, so it’s best to stay on the trails.
Geocachers: you’re in luck. At present, we maintain many geocaches in the area, in some pretty unusual places. Don’t know what geocaching is? Think of it doing a scavenger hunt, but around the world. Our ‘travel bugs’ have gone tens of thousands of kilometers, around British Columbia, Alberta, Europe, even the South Pacific. If you find a cache, be sure to log it. Take a hike. You’ll be rewarded with some remarkable things: like 100-year-old antelope brush, the savoury aroma of wild grey sage, towering Ponderosa pines, highwaymarked turtle crossings, and even a herd of California Bighorn Sheep. Have your camera or smartphone ready for some great pics.
