Lessons from Mademoiselle celebrates the 100th anniversary of Boulanger’s first visit from Paris to the United States and her Lectures on Modern Music, delivered in January 1925 at the Rice Institute (predecessor to the modern-day Rice University).
The repertoire represents music in the United States growing out of the 20th century, an era when European art music took on a distinctly American accent, guided in large part by Boulanger. Music by Elliott Carter, Philip Glass, and Quincy Jones highlights the wide range of musicians who were drawn to study with Boulanger and the unique styles she supported.
