When you walk into Windsor Park Stud, you walk into history A history of champion sires and racehorses bred to a winning formula for over four decades by a committed and passionate team. A team whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts; forming an extended family whose unique combination of experience and knowledge forms the DNA of Windsor Park Stud and its ongoing success.

Owned by the Schick family, Windsor Park has experienced exponential growth from a modest 108 acres in 1971 to 1,300 acres of diversely contoured, highly fertile land over four farms in the famed thoroughbred district of Cambridge, Waikato. Initially purchased and developed by Nelson and Sue Schick, Windsor Park is now part-owned and managed by their eldest son Rodney and his wife Gina.

Rod has been an integral part of Windsor Park’s success for the last 20 years, enhancing past achievements, including the prestige of three New Zealand Breeder Of The Year titles and numerous Champion Sire awards. The operation benefits enormously from Rod’s experience gained on studs and in racing stables worldwide together with the expert tutelage received when living with Kentucky-based Dr Ric Redden; widely acknowledged as the leading global authority on laminitis.

Gina, a very accomplished horsewoman in her own right, not only looks after their four children but also manages her own business EventStars, which retrains and rehomes off-the-track thoroughbreds providing them with exciting and productive futures at the completion of their racing careers.

Windsor Park’s international reputation for producing champion racehorses such as Australian great Might And Power, international champion So You Think, and Hong Kong superstar Aerovelocity, is an undeniably important part of their history.

Equally vital is their promising future, boldly evidenced in their current youthful stallion roster.

From the inception of Windsor Park, the stud’s shared mission and underlying philosophy has been to stand premium stallions which create the opportunity to breed the best racehorses possible. Previous champion sires Star Way, Kaapstad, Montjeu, Volksraad, High Chaparral, Thorn Park and Mastercraftsman illuminate the value of their rigorous selection process.

Since 2014, Windsor Park’s stallion roster has been enriched by six immensely talented new recruits, joining two proven sires, each demonstrating a significant investment in genetics and their strong commitment to the thoroughbred breeding and racing industry.

A 2YO winner at his second start, Turn Me Loose progressed to become a Gr.1, classic winning 3YO in just six starts.

As a Spring 3YO Turn Me Loose won the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas before proving totally dominant over his 3YO contemporaries with an emphatic 3 length win in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas. Taken to Australia to compete against their best, Turn Me Loose contracted travel sickness to such an extent he had to be rested and put aside until his 4YO season.

Returning to racing as a Spring 4YO in Melbourne, Turn Me Loose quickly recaptured Gr.1 winning form, stringing together successive wins in the Listed Seymour Cup, Gr.2 MVRC Schweppes Crystal Mile and $1 million Gr.1 VRC Emirates Stakes.

Turn Me Loose franked his highclass Australian form the following Autumn with a powerful winning effort against Australia’s best WFA sprinter/milers in the Gr.1 MRC Futurity Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield. Turn Me Loose repelled all challengers in the Futurity Stakes to record a resounding victory against a field containing eight other Gr.1 winners whose combined earnings exceeded $16.5 million, Turn Me Loose was a leading Australasian 3 & 4YO and was crowned Champion Sprinter & Middle Distance Horse in NZ in 2015/16.

Rageese was the fourth-equal highest rated 2YO in Australia by Timeform in 2014/15, in a crop headed by Gr.1 winners Vancouver, Exosphere and Pride Of Dubai.

Rageese confirmed his connections high regard at his second start at two when finishing an unlucky second in the Gr.2 ATC Pago Pago Stakes prior to filling the runnerup position behind Street Cry’s multiple Gr.1 winning 2YO Pride Of Dubai in the Gr.1 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Following his maiden victory over 1350m as an early Spring 3YO, Rageese displayed highclass form to finish fourth in the Gr.1 ATC Golden Rose Stakes, third in the Gr.2 ATC Stan Fox Stakes and a meritorious fifth in the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas. Rageese added further to his classic season resume in the Autumn, winning over 1300m in Melbourne before a runaway stakes win over 1400m in the H C Nitschke Stakes at Morphettville.

As a 4YO Rageese continued his improvement to score a decisive victory over Great Britain’s 2015 champion older miler Arod in the Gr.3 VRC L’Oreal Paris Stakes over 1400m at Flemington during Melbourne’s Spring Carnival.

Following this success Rageese was installed favourite for the Gr.1 Railway Stakes in Perth only to be scratched on race morning due to a stone bruise.

Vanbrugh was a winner on debut as a 2YO over 1200m at Randwick. He endorsed this impressive performance at his next start when finishing fifth in the Gr.2 ATC Pago Pago Stakes.

Vanbrugh quickly added a dominant Gr.1 victory to his resume when proving the best Spring 3YO in Sydney. He scored three consecutive wins culminating with victories in the Gr.3 ATC Gloaming Stakes over 1800m and Gr.1 ATC Spring Championship Stakes over 2000m.

The manner in which Vanbrugh dominated his rivals was impressive. Positioned off the pace he produced both a telling ‘turn of foot’ and his trademark determination to win these races in striking fashion. The following Autumn against his 3YO contemporaries Vanbrugh confirmed his quality with a strong finishing fourth in the Gr.1 ATC Rosehill Guineas.

Resuming racing in Sydney as a Spring 4YO, Vanbrugh finished fourth (to champion Winx) in the Gr.1 ATC George Main Stakes before travelling to Melbourne for their Spring Racing Carnival where he won the Gr.3 MRC Coongy Handicap, with subsequent Gr.1 Doncaster Handicap winner It’s Somewhat finishing in third position.

A high-class, tough and genuine racehorse with a magnificent attitude to racing, Vanbrugh recorded a top five finish in 13 of his 21 starts and retires to stud a Gr.1 winner of A$742,375 from 1200m to 2000m with all his wins coming on his preferred good going.

Mongolian Khan was a debut winner as an early Spring 3YO and progressed to win six of his first seven races.

Blessed with a high cruising speed and a brilliant turn of foot, Mongolian Khan followed a Listed win at his fourth start with Gr.2 wins in the Waikato and Avondale Guineas prior to Gr.1 success in the New Zealand Derby.

Mongolian Khan then crossed the Tasman to dominate his Australian contempories, closing out his 3YO season with victory in the Gr.1 Australian Derby.

Mongolian Khan is the first horse since Bonecrusher 29 years earlier, to win both the Australian and New Zealand Derbies, his classic success securing him the New Zealand Horse Of The Year, Champion 3YO and Champion Stayer titles for 2015.

Resuming racing as a 4YO, Mongolian Khan’s four Spring Gr.1 races culminated with history-making success in the time honoured Caulfield Cup. He is the first horse ever to win the Australian Derby, New Zealand Derby and Caulfield Cup which secured him back to back Horse Of The Year and Champion Stayer titles in 2016.

Mongolian Khan raced sound throughout his history-making career and retired the winner of 8 races – 6 in Group or Listed company - from 1400m to 2400m and in excess of NZ$4 million. A triple Gr.1 winner as a 3 & 4YO in Australia, Mongolian Khan achieved a Timeform Rating of 126 to be the highest rated colt in the 4YO category in 2016 with only the freakish racemare Winx rated above him.

Charm Spirit was among the leading 2YO colts of his generation displaying his natural talent in three Summer/ Autumn starts, winning over 1400m at Longchamp in Paris before finishing third in the Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagadere at his final start for the season.

Charm Spirit progressed to win five of his six starts as a 3YO, developing into a world class miler with three Group One victories at 1600m at his last three starts.

Charm Spirit commenced his 3YO season with a debut win in the Gr.3 Prix Djebel before finishing fifth (to Night Of Thunder, Kingman and Australia) in an outstanding renewal of the English Two Thousand Guineas.

He then remained unbeaten in his final four starts culminating in three Group One wins at 1600m – the Prix Jean Prat, Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and Ascot Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes.

Charm Spirit retired to stud at the completion of his 3YO season and rated second only to his paternal half brother and champion racehorse Kingman over 1600m on turf on the World Thoroughbred Rankings.

Charm Spirit was described by Timeform as ‘highclass…tough and genuine’ and was their highest rated French 3YO of 2014 with an annual rating of 127.

ShamExpress showcased his natural talent in three starts as a 2YO, breaking 33 seconds for his final 600m when winning brilliantly on debut at Flemington over 1200m. Notably, ShamExpress confirmed his ability to run outstanding sectionals throughout his racing career.

ShamExpress resumed racing as a Spring 3YO, placing in the Gr.1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes at the Melbourne racing carnival prior to winning over 1000m at Moonee Valley carrying 60kg’s in a time of 57.95 seconds.

ShamExpress then won Australia’s premier sprint race, the Gr.1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200m, against older horses in a time of 1.08.16. In doing so, ShamExpress joined the honour roll of Australia’s best sprinters that more recently includes leading sires General Nediym and Exceed And Excel as well as the invincible Black Caviar.

Training on to race again as a 4YO, ShamExpress started twice at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival where he finished powerfully to fill the runnerup position in the Gr.1 VRC Sprint Classic. He closed out his racing career with five more Autumn Gr.1 race starts which included finishing second in the Gr.1 VRC Lightning Stakes as well and finishing fourth in the Gr.1 VRC Newmarket H. and Gr.1 ATC All Aged Stakes.

ShamExpress retired to stud with a Timeform rating of 124 and racetrack career earnings in excess of $A1.15 million.
